Virginia E. Mattice
HONOLULU — Virginia E. (Kelley) Mattice, 77, of Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away Thursday, March 11, 1999, at her home.

She was born Feb. 8, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She was a longtime Stamford, N.Y. resident and an LPN at the former Stamford Community Hospital.

She is survived by her five children, four daughters, Ellen Lucas and her husband, Steve, of Cape Coral, Fla., Edith Mattice of Honolulu, Hawaii, Rosemary Mattice of Tucson, Ariz., and Susan Bassani and her husband, John, of West Sand Lake, N.Y.; and her son, Burton Mattice and his wife, Patty, of Vandala, Ohio. She also leaves nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Virginia was predeceased by her husband, Orson G. Mattice, on Jan. 3, 1984.

Funeral services will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii. Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Florence Ainslie
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Florence Anna Ainslie, 65, of Cooperstown and formerly of East Springfield, died Friday morning, March 12, 1999, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born June 28, 1933, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Ellis and Gladys (Ellis) Drake.

She first married Rowan Bresee who died May 22, 1959. She then married Alton C. Ainslie on Oct. 17, 1959, in Hartwick. Mr. Ainslie died Feb. 12, 1997.

Florence was raised in Springfield and graduated from the Springfield High School. Following her marriage to Alton, they moved to their home on Addie Van Alstyne Road where she lived for almost 40 years. For many years, she had been employed as a housekeeper for several area families and most recently she had been a personal nursing assistant, employed by Personal Nursing of Cooperstown.

She was a member of the Salt Springville United Methodist Church and recently had been a faithful attendee at the Fly Creek United Methodist Church. Florence loved to write poetry, often writing of local interests and people. Several of her poems have been published.

Florence is survived by her four daughters and three sons-in-law, Valerie and Bernard Mead and Joanne and Roger LaValley, all of Cherry Valley, Deborah and Gerald Noseworthy of Canajoharie and Linda Duncan of Edmeston; her sister, Ruth Ainslie of Norwich; eight grandchildren, Melinda Rockwell and her husband, Mahlon, of Cherry Valley, Michael Moore of Canajoharie, Gerald Noseworthy of Canajoharie, Jeremy Gage of Edmeston, Sarah Duncan or Canajoharie and Kyle and Benjamin Mead, both of Cherry Valley; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by one son, David A. Ainslie, who died on Dec. 22, 1989.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 15, 1999, at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Eileen Kellogg Cornwell, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the Springfield Center Cemetary.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m.-service time on Monday, March 15, when Florence's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Ludwig A. Kerzick
CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Ludwig A. Kerzick, 88, passed away peacefully at his residence on March 11, 1999.

Ludwig was born Aug. 8, 1910, in Little Falls, the son of Anton and Johanna (Gabrosek) Kerzick. At the age of 4, he moved with his family to the Kerzick homestead in the town of Middlefield.

On Nov. 6, 1938, he married Anna Korosec in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cooperstown. At this time, they moved to the Kerzick farm, purchasing it soon after. Ludwig and Anna will always be remembered for the wonderful farm they kept, the loving care of all their animals, the prosperous crops and wonderful vegetable garden.

Ludwig was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Cherry Valley.

He is survived by one son and his wife, Andrew and Eileen Kerzick of Cherry Valley; one daughter, Marie Knoetgen of Cooperstown; four devoted grandchildren, Sabrina and Aaron Kerzick and Jennifer and John Michael Knoetgen; one sister, Mary Kerzick of Yuma, Ariz.; two brothers, Joseph Kerzick of Westford and Anthony Kerzick of Kingston; and several close nieces and nephews.

Ludwig was predeceased by his wife, Anna, in May 1998, and two sisters, Bertha McNulty and Mildred Watson.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 15, 1999, at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas Catholic Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Santino Titta officiating.

Burial will take place in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hyde Park.

Calling hours will take place on Sunday, March 14, 1999, from 2-6 p.m. (only), with prayers at 5 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Mr. Kerzick's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the Friends of Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Viggo Larsen
ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Viggo Larsen died March 9 at Heartland in Zephyrhills, Fla., at the age of 96.

He was born in Hinsdale, Mass., on Oct. 26, 1902, son of Peter and Christine (Peterson) Larsen. The family moved to Minnesota and then returned to Mount Vision where he grew up.

He married Bessie (Card) on Aug. 16, 1924, and spent most of his life in the Mount Vision area farming. During World War II, he worked at Scintilla in Sidney.

Selling his farm, he moved to Fly Creek and later to Oaksville, opening a grocery store. He then worked for the town of Otsego.

When he and his wife retired, they moved to Zephyrhills, Fla., where they built their home.

He is survived by two daughters, Marguerite (Dally) Moris and Ida Mae and husband, Herman Bridger, of Cooperstown and Zephyrhills; two daughters-in-law, Jean Larsen of Oneonta and Joan Larsen of Cooperstown; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one brother-in-law, Vivan and wife, Marian Card, of Delhi and Arcadia, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Alice Card of Oneonta; and a special niece, Christine  White of Romulus; along with several nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by his wife, Bessie; two sons, Kenneth and Carl; two grandsons, John Morris and Charles Bridger; his brother, Walter; and sister, Martha Peet.

Memorial donations to go to charities of one's choice.

Arrangements by the National Cremation Society of Tampa, Fla., Memorial service will be held in the spring at the Fly Creek Cemetery.

Jeannette B. Loucks
VESTAL — Jeannette B. Loucks of Vestal, formerly of Oneonta and Binghamton, went to be with her Lord on March 11, 1999, at Willow Point Nursing Home, where she had resided for the past two years.

She was born June 19, 1912, to Burt and Etta (Montgomery) Brown.

On her birthday in 1937, she married Ward B. Loucks, Sr., in Oneonta. She spent most of her life in Oneonta, working at the dress factory and at Bendix in Sidney, retiring in 1974. She was a volunteer at Binghamton General Hospital, member of Park Avenue Baptist Church and enjoyed her family, who will miss her very much.

She is predeceased by her husband, parents, brothers, Russell and Lawrence, sisters, Edith Cullen and Iva Mae Crumb, and stepson, Ward B. Loucks, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Minetta Sue (David) Beckwith of Binghamton; sisters, Harriette McGowan of Chenango Forks and Georgianna Tracy of Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren, Kevin Davies, Sarah Beckwith and Joanna Beckwith all of Binghamton, and Carol Daffan of Oviedo, Fla.; several great-grandchildren; special great-granddaughter Chelsea Davies; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 19, 1999, at Park Avenue Baptist Church, 1135 Vestal Avenue, Binghamton.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Montrose Bible Conference, Montrose, Pa., where Jeannette spent many summers or to the charity of one's choice.

Donald Lee Burgess
COOPERSTOWN — Donald (Duck) Lee Burgess, 57, of Cooperstown died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at his home in Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 13, 1942, in Hartwick, a son of William and Rowena Burgess.

Duck was raised in Hartwick and graduated from Cooperstown Central School.

He served four years in the United States Navy and was a member of the Hartwick American Legion and Vets Club.

He married his former wife, Hilda Kane, in 1967.

He was employed for 32 years, as a mechanic, in the Cooperstown area.

Duck will be remembered as an excellent mechanic and for his interest in pitching horseshoes, auto racing, golfing and bowling. He was a caring friend and father.

He is survived by his two daughters and granddaughter, Holly and Hope Gengenbach of Mount Vision, and Heather Lee Burgess from Cooperstown; his mother, Rowena Burgess, and grandmother, Minnie Mead, of Hartwick; three brothers, William and family of North Carolina, Dennis and family of California, and Bruce and family of Japan; several nieces and nephews, and a close friend, Leigh Field Woeppel of Cooperstown.

Duck will be cremated. There will be a service held at the Christian Church in Hartwick on Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Lavern Saxer officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hartwick American Legion.

"You will be protected from the lash of the tongue, and need not fear when destruction comes." Job 5:21.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Marion E. Clapper
WATERVLIET — Marion E. Clapper, 83, of Watervliet died Friday, March 5, 1999, at Samaritan Hospital, Troy.

She was born in Stamford, the daughter of Harry and Viola Reed McMorris.

Mrs. Clapper was raised in Stamford and was a member of the graduating Class of 1935 from the former Stamford Seminary. She moved to Watervliet in 1940, and resided there since that time.

Mrs. Clapper was employed by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance for about 20 years, and retired in 1974.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Watervliet, the Watervliet Senior Citizens and Capital City Court No. 15 Order of the Amaranth.

She was the widow of Raymond Clapper, who died in 1985. She was also predeceased by a brother, Kenneth S. McMorris of Tribes Hill, in 1974.

She is survived by two sisters, Winifred Moseman of Grand Gorge and Helen Marzinsky of Watervliet; four nephews, James Moseman of Grand Gorge, Donald Moseman of Stamford and Stephen and William Marzinsky of Watervliet.

Funeral servics were Monday, March 8, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Parker Bros. Memorial, Broadway, Watervliet, where the Rev. Robert J. Peters, pastor of United Methodist Church of Watervliet, and the Rev. John Sherman, pastor of the Pilgrim Holiness Church of Green Grove, Pa., officiated. Interment was in the Albany Rural Cemetery.

Joseph E. Kranitz
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Joseph E. Kranitz, 95, formerly of 37 West Main St., died on Saturday, March 13, 1999, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

He was born on Jan. 28, 1904, in Hungary, a son of the late Joseph and Mary Tones Kranitz.

Joseph came to this country as a young boy and was educated in New York City Public Schools.

He was a mechanic and welder first in his own business and later for the Greyhound Bus Corporation, retiring in 1957.

A resident of both Sloansville and Woodside, Long Island, he came to Richfield Springs in 1993.

He was an honorably discharged United States Army veteran, serving in England, France and Germany in World War II.

Surviving him are two brothers, Eugene K. Kranitz and Frank and his wife, Geraldine Kranitz, all of Richfield Springs; three nephews, Alex Gombar, Phillip Collins and Frank Kranitz; four nieces, Cassandra, Cheryl and Linda Collins and Geraldine Krull.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Gombar.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at 3 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Dixon Bartle, rector of Saint Johns' Episcopal Church in Richfield Springs, officiating. Mr. Kranitz will then be placed in the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home private receiving vault to await interment in Springfield Center Cemetery later this spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Melvin S. Muckel
DELHI — Melvin S. Muckel, 86, of Delhi died Friday, March 12, 1999, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born Aug. 13, 1912, in Millcreek, Pa., the son of Emory and Verna (Hawn) Muckel.

Mr. Muckel married Margaret I. Miller on Dec. 25, 1936, in Mapleton, Pa.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army.

A carpenter by occupation, he worked for many years for the Reynolds Construction Company in Huntingdon, Pa.

Melvin was a member of the Millcreek Methodist Chruch, attended the Valley View Alliance Church on Piney Ridge, and since moving to Delhi in 1997, attended the Delhi Alliance Church.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret Muckel of Delhi; a sister, Ina Emery of Millcreek, Pa.; a daughter, Thelma Heffner of Largo, Md.; sons and their wives, the Rev. Wayne and Jean Muckel of Delhi and Gerald and Allison Muckel of Greenbelt, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Norman; and a sister, Irma Madden.

Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi, with the Rev. Kenneth Lindsey of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Owego officiating. Calling hours will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring at Mountainview Cemetery, Millcreek, Pa.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Phyllis M. Ostrander
EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mrs. Phyllis M. Ostrander, 94, passed away Saturday, March 13, 1999, at The Meadows, Phoenix Mills.

She was born in Harpersfield on May 15, 1904, the daughter of Edgar I. and Marguerite J. (Snyder) Hand.

On Sept. 27, 1921, she married Burrell Root; he predeceased her in 1934. On July 25, 1936, she married Glenn C. Ostrander; he predeceased her in 1963.

She was a homemaker, and enjoyed her family.

Mrs. Ostrander is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Hannah Cory of Schuyler Lake; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Irene Root of Silver Springs, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three daughters, Janet Root, Frieda Charmin and Ida Richards, and a son, Robert Root.

There will be a graveside memorial service (to be announced in the spring) in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center, with Mr. Lyman  Johnson officiating.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc. in Cherry Valley.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
