Wilma A. Sloat
DELHI — Wilma A. Sloat, 86, of Delhi, died Monday, March 15, 1999, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born June 4, 1912, the daughter of Boman and Frances (Aldrich) Sloat.

A resident of Delhi all her life, she was employed in domestic service in the Delhi area. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.

Burial will take place in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Arrangements are with MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Jessie M. Miller
MILFORD — Mrs. Jessie M. Miller, 79, died Tuesday morning, March 16, 1999, at The Meadows.

Jessie was born Aug. 19, 1919, in Oneonta, the daughter of Arnold and Gladys (Deming) Van Bumble.

She married Howard Miller on Aug. 8, 1937, in Portlandville.

Jessie was a retired employee of Astrocom Electronics in Colliersville.

Her father died in World War II, while serving with the United States Army and she was raised by her grandparents, Richard and Maude Deming in the Gifford Hill area of Oneonta.

She was a former member of the Milford Presbyterian Church.

Jessis was a devoted mother and grandmother and is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Catherine Miller; two granddaughters, Casandra and Elizabeth Miller of Milford; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie and Charles Husted of Syracuse and Maude and James Cobbett of  Pennsylvania; a sister, Dorothy Simons of Denver,  Colo.; one brother-in-law, Perry Miller and his wife, Dee, of Stamford; a sister-in-law, Alberta Miller of Schenectady; and a niece and two nephews.

Jessie was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Howard Miller on Oct. 15, 1986.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Milford Cemetery, Milford. Jessie will be placed in the Bookhout private burial vault to await burial in the spring.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Milford Fire Department and Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Ada E. Simmons
PORTLANDVILLE — Ada E. Simmons, 76, of Portlandville, died Monday, March 15, 1999, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. She had been a resident of The Meadows for the last two years.

She was born Jan. 16, 1923, in Edmeston, the daughter of Jesse and Nora (Thiem) Card.

She married Roger D. Simmons on Oct. 22, 1939, in Edmeston.

Ada was a homemaker who truly enjoyed making large meals and playing cards with her friends.

She is survived by her husband, Roger of Portlandville; her children and their spouses, Donald and Rosa Simmons of Portlandville and Glenda and Donald of Walton; her sisters, Emma Meyers of New Berlin and Estella Lindburg of Smithville Flats; her brother, Leon Card of South New Berlin; her sister-in-law, Beatrice Card of Chase Nursing Home; her grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her brother, Lowell Card.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 19, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. William Highfield officiating. Calling hours are Thursday, March 18, 1999, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the spring at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ada's memory to The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33 W., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Francis G. Utter
DELHI — Francis G. Utter, 77, of Delhi, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Sept. 2, 1921, on Bagley Brook, Hamden, the son of Raymond and Lillian Utter.

He married Ethel Marion Peters on May 17, 1943.

A master mechanic by occupation, he worked for the Delaware County Highway Department for 20 years.

He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy as a veteran of World War II in October 1945.

Mr. Utter was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a very active member of the building committee, which he co-chaired with John Nault.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ethel; two sons and their wives, David and Linda Utter and Stephen and Beverly Utter; two grandchildren, Renee and Stephanie Utter; and a brother, Harold Utter, all of Delhi.

A daughter, Patricia, and a son, Francis Utter Jr., predeceased him.

Memorial contributions may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars "VFW" Post 10550, P.O. Box 145, Delhi, N.Y. 13753.

A graveside memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Leroy A. Wright
MORRIS — Leroy A. Wright, 74, died Monday, March 15, 1999, at his home in Morris.

He was born Sept. 12, 1924, in Unadilla, the son of Claude D. and Rachael (VerValin) Wright.

He was married to Gladys VanDewerker on June 19, 1957, in Sidney.

He was a well-known cattle dealer and dairy farmer in the area for many years.

He served his country in the United States Air Force during the World War II and was a member of the VFW of Otego.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys of Morris; a son, John Wright and his friend, Cathy, and the children, John, Leah and Crystal; a brother, Clyde Wright of South New Berlin; four sisters, Gladys Young of Oneonta, Doris Jester of Otego, Peggy Richards of Florida and Viola Babcock of Albany.

It was Roy's request that no calling hours be held and memorial services will be private at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Thomas R. Hawkins
BAINBRIDGE — Thomas R. Hawkins, 20, of Bainbridge died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, due to an accident at home.

He was born Jan. 29, 1979, in Sidney.

Thomas attended and graduated from Bainbridge-Guilford High School.

He married Amy Munro on June 14, 1997, in Unadilla.

Thomas entered the United States Army Reserves in January of 1996, and was based out of 33RD General Hospital in Utica. He was trained as a medic.

Thomas had been employed by many local businesses, but had recently been employed by Elmers, in Bainbridge.

He was in the bowling league in Bainbridge as well as Sidney. Thomas attended the First Baptist Church, Bainbridge.

He is survived by his loving wife, Amy Hawkins of Bainbridge, and son, Dylan Hawkins of Bainbridge; his mother and father, David and Cynthia Hawkins of Bainbridge and Sidney; brother, Jerry Hawkins of Sidney; sister, Marcey Hawkins of Sidney; paternal grandfather, George Hawkins of St. Cloud, Fla.; maternal grandparents, Minnie and Ray Whispell of Unadilla; and aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many special friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 20, 1999, at the First Baptist Church, Bainbridge, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Sundar Samuel officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 19, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund for Dylan Hawkins.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Ivalee M. Behrens
SUN CITY, Ariz. — Ivalee M. Behrens, 97, passed away Feb. 17, 1999.

She was born in Corning, Kan., on Dec. 23, 1901, the daughter of Irvin D. and Dora Mae Followell-Atkins.

She graduated from Corning High School in May 1920, as valedictorian of her class. She taught in the elementary schools in Corning and Goff, Kan. She attended Emporia State Teachers College (then Emporia Normal School).

As a teen-ager, she taught piano lessons in her home. Upon receiving her music teaching certificate in 1924, she taught music in  Washington and Kansas.

She married Herman D. Behrens in May 1926, and both taught in the Pratt, Kansas, high school. In 1929, they enrolled at Ohio State University, where Ivalee received her degree in music. She was elected to Pi Lambda Theta, women's honorary sorority in education.

In 1931, the Behrens moved to Minot, N.D., where Ivalee served as counselor for the Campus YWCA, while her husband served as college professor. In 1935, she moved to Geneseo, N.Y., where Ivalee directed a junior choir for 11 years while her husband served as professor and later as director of education at Oneonta, N.Y. While in Oneonta, Ivalee directed a faculty wives chorus and a church youth choir, and served as president of AAUW. In 1961, the Behrens moved to Ohio Northern University, Ada, Ohio.

In 1970, the Behrens retired to Sun City, Ariz., where Ivalee directed the Katydids, a community women's chours, and served as a volunteer at Boswell Hospital. She was a member of the United Church of Sun City, where she served on the music board.

She is survived by three sisters, Hazel Brannan of Manhattan, Kan., Naomi Hodgson of Columbia, Mo., and Wanda Culbertson of Bartlesville, Okla.; one brother, Richard Atkins and his wife, Helen, of Ames, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Behrens was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Milburn Atkins of Hereford,  Texas, and Donald Atkins of Arvado,  Colo.

A memorial service was held for Ivalee Mae Atkins-Behrens on Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at the United Church of Sun City, Ariz.

Memorials may be sent to the Herman and Ivalee Behrens Scholarship Fund at Emporia State University, 1500 Highland St., Emporia, Kan. 66801.

Edward R. Vatovec
HARTWICK — Edward R. Vatovec, 56, of Hartwick, died early Wednesday morning, March 17, 1999, at his home, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on May 5, 1942, in Cooperstown, son of Rudy and Susan (Schultz) Vatovec.

He married Rebecca Truex on Sept. 23, 1970, in Cooperstown.

Ed was raised and educated in Cooperstown and was a graduate of the Cooperstown Central School Class of 1960. Continuing his education, he graduated from the Greer Technical Institute of Chicago in 1960. In 1968, he assumed ownership of his parent's farm, proudly operating it as an organic dairy farm.

He was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, the Slovanian Benefits Society and enjoyed collecting antique tractors.

Ed is survived by his wife of 28 years, Rebecca of Hartwick; two daughters, Jennifer and Christine Vatovec, both of Hartwick; two sisters, Pauline Vatovec of Hartwick and Mary Ann Willoughby of Schuyler Lake; one brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Geri Vatovec of Hartwick; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 22, 1999, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John R. Roos officiating. Burial will be at a later date at St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, 1999, when Ed's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to Butternut Valley Farms Organic Co-op, care of Paris Reidhead, P.O. Box 295, Hartwick, N.Y. 13348 or to the charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Hilda G. Shaver
OTEGO — Mrs. Hilda G. Shaver, 86, died Monday evening, March 15, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

She was born June 6, 1912, in Milford, the daughter of Frank Dudley Brown Morgan and Grace Jane Houghton.

Hilda married Everett Shaver on Feb. 24, 1930, at the Wells Bridge Parsonage, Wells Bridge.

Hilda was a lifelong resident of the Wells Bridge-Otego area.

She was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church, Home Bureau of Otsego County, Women's Christian Temperance Union, Otego Valley Grange, American Legion and was a Gold Star Mother. Helen served as a den mother and associate Girl Scout leader in Otego.

Helen is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sherry Shaver of West Haven, Conn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Robert Hunt of Sidney and Arlene and Richard Hoag of Wilson, N.C.; a daughter, Mary Kimble of Binghamton; one brother, Dudley Morgan of Otego; two sisters, Irene Chapman of Baldwin Park,  Calif., and Blanche  Johnson of New Berlin; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Everett Shaver, on Aug. 24, 1997, a son, Gerald Shaver, who died in the Korean War, and three brothers, Kenneth, Glenn and Stewart Morgan.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 1999, at her church, the Otego United Methodist Church. Her pastor, the Rev. Fred Albrecht, will officiate. Hilda will be placed in the Bookhout private vault to await burial in the spring at Otego Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, Friday, from 7 p.m. till 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Hilda's memory to the Otego United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Gerald R. Barkley
DUANESBURG — Mr. Gerald R. Barkley, 83, of Duanesburg, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at St. Clare's Hospital.

He was born July 3, 1915, in South Mountain, Ontario, Canada, the son of Andrew Barkley and Lydia Merkley.

He lived in Duanesburg since 1939. He moved from the Oneonta area.

He attended Davenport High School.

He worked for General Electric as a crane operator for 32 years, retiring in 1971.

He married Evelyn (Wickham) Barkley on Jan. 22, 1939.

He was a member of the General Electric 1/4 Century Club, Bellevue Reformed Church.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Wickham) Barkley of Duanesburg; three children, Karen B. Sylvia of Amsterdam, Eileen B. Monte of Duanesburg and Clifton L. Barkley of Granite Falls, N.C.; special nieces, Wanda Masick and Marian Smith, both of Schenectady; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-nephew; one great-niece; and several other nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Saturday, March 20, 1999, which are private.

Funeral services are Saturday, March 20, 1999, at 11 a.m., at the Princetown Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 3662 Giffords Church Rd., Duanesburg, with the Rev. Gary Westra, of Princetown Evangelical Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Schenectady Memorial Park, Rotterdam.

Memorials may be made in Gerald's name to the Princetown Evangelical Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund, 3662 Giffords Church Rd., Duanesburg, N.Y. 12056 or Bellevue Reformed Church, 2000 Broadway, Schenectady, N.Y. 12306.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bond Funeral Home, Schenectady.
