Emma Irish
ONEONTA — Emma Irish, 91, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born on March 19, 1907, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Agostino and Celestina (Rosasco) Gardella.

She married Arthur Irish on Oct. 2, 1943. He died on Nov. 15, 1947.

Emma was a member of St. Mary's Church.

She is survived by her sisters and brothers, Della Biggio of Otego, August Gardella of Oneonta, Edward Gardella of Shingle Springs,  Calif., and Evelyn Manzer of Oneonta. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Frank Gardella, and one sister, Loretta Johnson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, March 20, 1999, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Lena E. Morton
WALTON — Lena E. Morton, 84, of 48 Mead St., Walton, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was predeceased by her husband, David Morton in 1965.

Lena was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, Walton. She was a retired employee of the Delaware County Infirmary, former employee of the Round-up Ranch and Royal Restaurant. Upon her retirement, she returned to Walton after 13 years.

She spent most of her life in the Walton area. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Walton VFW and American
Legion.

She is survived by three children, Betty (James) Doig of LaGrange, Ill., Leslie McNaughton of  Texas and John McNaughton of Delhi; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Smith of  Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 22, at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Gardiner Place, Walton. The Rev. Shaw Mudge Jr., rector of his church, will officiate. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. on Sunday, March 21, from 7-9 p.m.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 41 Gardiner Place, Walton, N.Y. 13856.

Jeanette Northrup
ONEONTA — Mrs. Jeanette Mae Northrup, 84, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, following a recurrence of breast cancer.

Mrs. Northrup was born May 11, 1914, in Inkerman-Pittston, Pa., to Robert and Mabel (Walker) Eustice.

In 1931 she married Donald C. Northrup in Hallstead, Pa. They were married for 52 years until his death on May 27, 1983.

She attended Oneonta schools, but left school during the Depression.

After her three sons were grown, she graduated from State University College at Oneonta, completing the four-year course in three years. Mrs. Northrup taught elementary students of the Milford School District for 20 years, retiring to care for her ill husband in 1980. Mrs. Northrup loved to golf and bowl until her disease no longer permitted her to do so.

She continued to enjoy reading, music and pets until a few days before her death. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta.

She is survived by her two sons, the Rev. Dr. Ronald Northrup of Wilsonville, Ore., and Shaun Northrup of 41 Belmont Circle, Oneonta, who cared for her during her final illness; her third son, Ralph Northrup died in 1993. Grandchildren include Peter Northrup and Sarah N. Stafford of Lake Oswego, Ore., David Northrup of Louisville, Ky., Diane N. Miranda of Girard, Ohio, Karin N. Paoletta of Hilton Head, S.C., Renee Northrup of Tampa, Fla., Kevin Northrup of Oak Creek, Wis., and seven great-grandchildren. Survivors also include her sister, Mabel Kristofik of Laurens, and four brothers, Merle Eustice of Oneonta, Robert Eustice of Franklin Square, Harold Eustice of Syracuse and Willard Eustice of Henderson, Nev.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 26, 1999, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Northrup will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 14, 1999, at First United Methodist Church, Oneonta. The Rev. William Bouton, pastor of her church, will officiate.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Esther Whitaker
TOLEDO, Ohio — Esther Hubbard Whitaker died Feb. 9, 1999, at Swan Creek Retirement Village, Toledo, Ohio, at age 86.

She was born at Orchard Grove Farm, Ovid, Mich., the daughter of Ivah and Jerry Hubbard.

She was the widow of Ellis H. Whitaker.

She graduated from Ovid Public School, held a bachelor's of science degree from Central Michigan University in 1936, an master's of arts degree from Teachers College, Nashville, Tenn., and had other advanced study at Denver University and Sacramento ( Calif.) State College.

She was a vocal student of J. Harold Powers at CMU and of Carl Gutekunst and Percy Rector Stephens of New York City. Her work included supervisor of music at Ionia Public Schools, Ionia, Mich., and for many years she taught music education at the State University College at Oneonta.

The joy of music ran throughout her life. She was soloist and choir director at the First Presbyterian Church in Ionia, Mich., First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta and in Fairhaven Unitarian Church, Fairhaven, Mass. She directed both women's and men's choral groups at SUCO and other communities where she resided.

Survivors include nieces, Dorothy Coats of Ohio and Ivah M. Hurst of Michigan; nephews, Robert Hubbard and Daniel Schlenker of Michigan and Arnold Prissing of Nevada; half-brother, Jerry J. Hubbard of Michigan; and numerous grand-nieces and nephews and great-grand-nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at Fairhaven Unitarian Church, 102 Green St., Fairhaven, Mass., Monday, March 29, 1999, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of floral tributes, the family suggests contributions to the Esther Hubbard Whitaker Faculty Award with checks payable to the College at Oneonta Foundation, Office of College Advancement, State University College at Oneonta, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820; Fairhaven Unitarian Church Student Assistance Fund, P.O. Box 107, Fairhaven, Mass. 02719; New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 2053, New Bedford, Mass. 02741; or a charity of one's choice.

Theodora Cook
MILFORD — Mrs. Theodora "Teddy" Cook, 74, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at the Meadows.

Teddy was born in Westford on Oct. 12, 1924, a daughter of Henry and Theodora (Lamers) Peeters.

Theodora graduated from Schenevus High School.

She married C. (Jim) Cook on May 14, 1959, in Afton. Teddy was a devoted mother and wife. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed growing vegetables in her garden. Teddy was a member of the United Methodist Church of Milford.

She is survived by her husband of 39 years, C. James Cook of Milford; three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Keith Ackerman of Milford, Debbie and Mike Van Dusen of Otego and Martha and Donald Tambasco of Wappingers Falls; a son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Joyce Empie of Rochester; a sister, Minnie Burton of Westford; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Ann Yale, and two brothers, Martin Peeters and Herbert Peeters.

A memorial service will be held at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford on Tuesday, March 23, at noon with the Rev. Nancy Kozlowski, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Milford, officiating.

Calling hours will be at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford on Tuesday, March 23, 1999, from 11 a.m. to noon when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, for those who choose, donations can be made in Teddy's name to the United Methodist Church of Milford.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Marian Goss
MERIDALE — Marian Eleanor Gemmel Goss, 75, of Meridale, died March 18, 1999.

She was born in Delhi on Nov. 15, 1923, to Russell and Sarah Gemmel.

She married Almerion C. Goss on April 12, 1944. He passed away April 10, 1998.

A lifelong area resident, she graduated from Delaware Academy. Her occupation was caring for her home and family.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Rodger and Linda Goss, and their children, Jason and Gerald; a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and John Miller, and their children, Wendy and Neil, and his wife, Shannone; a daughter-in-law, Judy, and twins, Austin and Jerid; six sisters, Sa"-rah Rubyor, Beatrice Staerker, Louise Sitts, Terry Gemmel, Marge  Johnson and Katherine Knapp; four brothers, Russell Gemmel, John Gemmel, Donald Gemmel and Francis Gemmel; as well as more than 70 nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Goss was predeceased by two sons, Gerald and David, and three siblings, Jean Davidson, Robert Gemmel and Gerald Gemmel.

There will be a graveside service in the spring at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Donations in her memory may be made to Meridale Fire Department or Emergency Squad, the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are with MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Ruth Babcock
NORWICH — Ruth E. Babcock, 88, formerly of Golden Age Apartments in Norwich, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 1999, in the Residential Health Care Facility of Chenango Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Hillburn on March 1, 1999, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Herbert) Du Vall. She was raised in Hillburn and on Sept. 18, 1937, she married W. Vere Babcock, who predeceased her. Following her marriage she moved to Exeter Center. She had also lived in the towns of Hartwick and Burlington Flats in Otsego County. She moved to Norwich in 1975, where she resided in the Golden Age Apartments.

During her leisure time she enjoyed walking, sewing and cooking.

She was a member of the Burlington Flats Baptist Church and while in Norwich had attended the Bible Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, Ward Babcock and his wife, Sally of Sherburne; a stepdaughter, Nellie Benjamin of Herkimer; a stepdaughter-in-law, Alice Babcock of Clintondale; three grandchildren, Christopher Babcock of Blossvale, Gloria Parsons of Dallas, and Esther Babcock of Clintondale; three great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sarah Feringa of Norwich.

She was predeceased by five sisters, Grace Wagonhoffer, Minnie May, Florence Gurney, Gertrude Winter and Hazel Randall; and two brothers, Roy and Francis Du Vall.

Funeral and committal services for Mrs. Babcock will be held on Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home in Norwich, with the Rev. John Blackburn, pastor of the Faith Baptist Tabernacle in Sherburn, officiating. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will take place in the spring in Exeter Cemetery, Exeter Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Memorial Fund of the Chenango Memorial Hospital RHCF, the Friendship Club at Perry Browne School or to the Faith Baptist Tabernacle in Sherburne.

Dorothy R. Goodrich
FRANKLIN — Dorothy R. Goodrich, 85, of Franklin went to be with her Lord on Friday, March 19, 1999, at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

She was bon June 4, 1913, in Sidney, the daughter of Mahlon W. and Myrtle (Clark) Rowell.

She married Louis Goodrich on Sept. 16, 1933. He died on Jan. 19, 1983.

Dorothy was a lifelong area resident, being raised in Northfield. Considered as a professional mom, she was a member of the Franklin Community Bible Church (formerly the Congregational Baptist Church), and its women's federation. She also was a member of the Franklin Senior Citizens.

She is survived by three sons, Thomas Goodrich of West Henrietta, Paul Goodrich of Campo,  Calif. and Donald Goodrich of Franklin; two daughters, Lynda Elderkin and Sonja Johns of Franklin; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; her stepmother, Anna Mullineaux of Walton; a brother, William Rowell of Walton; three sisters, Helen Dag of Delhi, Thelma McCoy of Walton and Marjorie Banks of Schenectady. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Junius Rowell; a grandson, Danny Goodrich; and a great-granddaughter, Chloe Goodrich.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Thomas Peck, a family friend, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call this evening at the funeral home from 7 to 9, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Maria Heffernan
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Maria Elizabeth Heinbokel, Weigel, Kramer, Stucin, Heffernan died Friday, March 19, 1999, at The Meadows.

Maria was born Feb. 20, 1906, the daughter of Henry and Meta (Leeborg) Heinbokel in Basbeck, Germany.

Maria came to America in 1922, working as domestic help, and married Emil Weigel in 1929. She moved to a small farm outside Roseboom in 1943, where she farmed with her son until 1954. Maria married Herman Kramer in 1958, Stanley Stucin in 1977, and Frank Heffernan in 1983. They are all deceased.

She has worked in Schenectady and different communities as well as the Thanksgiving Home. Maria volunteered at Bassett Healthcare. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown.

Maria is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Gunther and Lee Weigel of Florida and Werner and Beverly Weigel of Cooperstown R.R.; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several stepchildren, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the First Presbyterian Church in Cherry Valley.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Ronald G. Jacobs
SCHUYLER — Mr. Ronald G. Jacobs, 76, of 139 Bono Boulevard, passed away Friday, March 19, 1999, in the Masonic Home with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Oaksville, on Oct. 11, 1922, the son of the late George and Susan Dickenson Jacobs and attended Hartwick Schools.

He was married to Anna Mae Rifanburg on July 3, 1950, in Garrattsville.

Mr. Jacobs was employed by Elliot's Potato Farm, Garrattsville from 1940 until 1971; Sundben Farm, New Berlin from 1971 until 1977 and was lastly employed by Mannino's Dairy Dell, Frankfort from 1977 until his retirement in 1995.

Mr. Jacobs is survived by beloved wife, Anna Mae; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Mary Jacobs of Frankfort and Barry and Tina Jacobs of South New Berlin; four daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Robert C. Allen of Hobart, Betsy and Mark Wheeler of Arlington,  Texas, Debbie and Donald Fuller of New Berlin and Pamela and Ric Benhoff of Whitesboro; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Irene Skubitz of Richfield Springs, Marie Harrington of Mount Vision and Shirley and Fred Miller of Mount Vision; 18 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; several nieces, nephews, cousins and his many friends at Marie's Grocery Store, West Schuyler, where he found much enjoyment visiting daily.

He was predeceased by one son, Samuel Jacobs on May 28, 1966; two brothers, Carl Jacobs and Donald Jacobs; and one sister, Dorothy Linberg.

His funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc., 203 Second Ave., Frankfort, with the Rev. David Kirkpatrick, chaplain of the Masonic Home, officiating. Spring interment will be in West Schuyler Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc.

The Jacobs family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of the Masonic Home for all the care given to Ronald.
