Maurice M. `Rusty' Roe
DAVENPORT CENTER — Mr. Maurice M. "Rusty" Roe, 89, of Davenport Center died Friday evening, March 19, 1999, with his family at his bedside, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Nov. 6, 1909, in Davenport, the son of Melvin and Margaret (McCulley) Roe.

He married Emma Roe on Feb. 18, 1935, in Davenport.

Mr. Roe was in charge of the Maintenance Department and was also a mail courier at Hartwick College for several years.

Maurice was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta. He enjoyed playing the mouth organ, his 1930 Model A, and being in the outdoors taking care of his garden and roses.

Maurice was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be greatly missed by all.

Maurice is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Emma Roe of Davenport Center; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marjorie Toombs of Davenport Center and Patricia and Charles Mills of California; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Robin and Thomas Mole of Davenport Center, Melanie and Jeffrey Cuddy of Davenport Center, Jeffrey and Donna Toombs of Davenport Center, Deborah and Jay Gula of Grand Gorge, Gregory Mills of California, Todd and Crystal Mills of California and Stacey Mills of California; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Maurice was predeceased by his parents and a son-in-law, Merritt Toombs.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Marie E. King, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta, officiating. Burial will be in the spring at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester. The family will be present tonight from 7 to 9 at the Bookhout Funeral Home, when those who wish may call.

George J. Schiffner
FRANKLIN — George J. Schiffner, 76, of Franklin, died on Friday, March 19, 1999, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

He was born on Nov. 2, 1922, in Manhattan, the son of Gustave and Antonia (Kuttner) Schiffner.

He married Helen Kutnohowrsky in Manhattan. She died on Dec. 2, 1976.

George served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II.

In 1985, he retired from the Lithographers Union in New York City. George and his son, Gary, moved to Franklin, following his retirement.

He is survived by his three sons and their spouses, George J. and Martha Schiffner Jr. of Elmhurst, Steven J. and Debbie Schiffner of Mississagua, Ontario, and Gary Lee Schiffner of Franklin; one brother, William H. Schiffner of Long Island; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

George was predeceased by his brother, Gus, and a sister, Adele.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at 8 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin. Burial will be in the Wappingers Falls Rural Cemetery, Wappingers Falls. Friends may call Wednesday evening, from 6 p.m. until service time, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Schiffner family, Franklin Emergency Squad or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Margaret Eldridge
EMPORIA, Kan. — Margaret Eldridge, 90, of Emporia Presbyterian Manor in Emporia, Kan., formerly of Fly Creek, N.Y., died Friday, March 19, 1999, in Newman Memorial County Hospital, Emporia, Kan.

She was born Aug. 30, 1908, in New Hartford, N.Y., the daughter of Charles Milburn and Edna Hoyt Milburn.

She married William Eldridge in New Hartford, on July 4, 1936. He died Aug. 28, 1986.

She was a graduate of Potsdam Normal in Potsdam, N.Y.

She was a teacher in New Hartford, Marilla, N.Y., and Richfield Springs, N.Y., for 20 years. She retired in 1965.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown, N.Y., the Fellowship Guild in Cooperstown, the Bridge Club in Cooperstown, the New York State Teachers Association and the Fly Creek Historical Society in Fly Creek.

Margaret is survived by three sons, David Eldridge of Emporia, Kan., John W. Eldridge of Ballston Spa, N.Y., and Thomas C. Eldridge of Cobden, Ontario, Canada; a sister-in-law, Betty Boylan of Emporia, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Russell Milburn, Charles Milburn Jr. and Jack Milburn; and a sister, Beatrice Durkee.

A private memorial service will be at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor, Emporia, Kan. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in Fly Creek, N.Y.

Memorial donations may be made to Emporia Presbyterian Manor in Emporia, Kan.

George Allan Sheffer
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — George Allan Sheffer, 67, of Richfield Springs, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center.

He was born July 29, 1931, in Brooklyn, the son of Glen W. Sheffer and A. Gertrude Swenson Sheffer.

He married Bertha M. Tegen on June 6, 1954, in Kennan, Wis.

He was an instructional programmer for UNIVAC from 1956 until his retirement due to disability in 1976.

He grew up in Rice Lake, Wis. He served in the United States Navy from 1949 to 1951.

George is survived by his wife, Bertha; son, Karl, his wife, Monica, and daughter, Courtney, of Pottstown, Pa.; son, Ken, his wife, Joanna, and children, Chris and Nicole, of Spring City, Pa.; daughter, Karen of Rockville, Md.; daughter, Sue Boest, her husband, Gary, and children, Erin and Danny, of Morris; and daughter, Kimberly of Richfield Springs. He is also survived by his brother, Rodney Sheffer of Aitkin, Minn.; sisters, Ellen Sheffer and Lucy Hoff of Eau Claire, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a private memorial at a later date.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center for the care given to George during his stay.

Donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Irene B. Mottram
HARTWICK — Mrs. Irene B. Mottram, 74, of Wells Avenue, in Hartwick, died early Tuesday morning, March 23, 1999, at The Meadows.

She was born on Feb. 12, 1925, in Los Angeles,  Calif., a daughter of William and Myrtle (Pulver) Bannaham.

She married Thomas W. Mottram on Sept. 15, 1946, in Glens Falls.

At the age of 2, Irene and her family moved to Millerton and later to Glens Falls, where she graduated from the South Glens Falls High School, with the Class of 1940. In June of 1954, she and her husband moved from South Glens Falls to Hartwick.

For most of her life she worked as a secretary, her last position being with Gordon Roberts at Hartwick College.

She was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown and was a Past President of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 Women's Auxiliary in Cooperstown.

She greatly enjoyed craft work.

Irene is survived by her husband of 52 years, Tom of Hartwick; one daughter and son-in-law, Gloria Jean and Jesse Lawton of Valley Head, Ala.; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Thomas W. and Susan Mottram Jr. of Lakeland, Fla., Stephen G. Mottram of Hartwick, Kevin D. and Jodie Mottram of Elyria, Ohio, and Chris and Cathy Mottram of Bradenton, Fla.; six grandsons, Loren, Shane, Troy, Bradley and Michael Mottram and Adam Putnam; one granddaughter, Amber Mottram; two sisters, Louise Selkirk of South Hadley, Mass., and Patricia  Jones of Glens Falls; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Rose Winch of South Glens Falls; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 1999, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Coopersotwn, with the Rev. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in June in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 26, 1999, when Irene's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to The Meadows Activities Department, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

John R. Byard
FULTON — John R. Byard, 80, of Towpath Towers, 100 Rochester St., Fulton, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital, Fulton.

He was the son of trial attorney, Mr. and Mrs. James J. Byard Jr.

A native of Cooperstown. He resided in Oneonta, and had also resided in Rochester, Liverpool and Pennellville before moving to Fulton in 1983.

He was a graduate of Oneonta State Teachers College at Oneonta, where he received his teaching certificate in 1940.

Mr. Byard was a member of State Street United Methodist Church, Fulton. He was a life member of VFW Post 569, Fulton and the American Legion Post in Oneonta. He was a membr of Elks Lodge 830 and Moose Lodge 1280, both in Fulton; the SUNY at Oneonta Alumni Association; Fulton Historical Society and served on the board of directors of the Oswego County Historical Association. He was a social member of the Polish Home and the Italian American Club, both in Fulton. He had served as town of Granby historian for more than 10 years.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 3rd Army in the European Theater of Operations, where he received the Silver Star medal for valor by destroying a German tank single-handedly.

John is survived by his wife, Dorothy I. Byard of Fulton; six children, all graduates of Cornell University: four sisters, Gertrude Lebouf and Panny Hill, both of Lakeland, Fla., Harriet Van Woert of Oneonta and Mary B. Ness of Spiceland, Ind.; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Norman F. Carr Sr.
ONEONTA — Mr. Norman F. Carr Sr., 82, of Oneonta, passed away Monday evening, March 22, 1999, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born July 4, 1916, in Oneonta, the son of Emmett and Ada (Benedict) Carr.

He married Theda Torrey on June 30, 1938, in Oneonta.

Norm worked in the maintenance department at the Homer Folks Hospital from 1948 until its close in 1980.

Norman is survived by his wife, Theda Carr of Oneonta; a daughter, Evelyn Lower of Milford; a daughter-in-law, Norma Carr of Oneonta; a granddaughter and her husband, Colleen and Nicholas Aufmuth of Fly Creek; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Kara Aufmuth of Fly Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

Norman was predeceased by a son, Norman F. Carr Jr.; five sisters, Isabelle Turk, Grace Crandall, Dorothy Alger, Ruth Yager and Bessie Woolheater; and three brothers, Devillo Carr, Raymond Carr and Earl Carr.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Norman F. Carr Jr. Scholarship Fund in care of Duncan Davie, Town of Oneonta, P.O. Box, West Oneonta, N.Y. 13861, in loving memory of Norman F. Carr Sr.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Charles E. Northrop
FRANKLIN — Charles E. Northrop, 72, of Franklin, died unexpectedly on Monday, March 22, 1999, in the emergency room of The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born April 1, 1926, in Delhi, the son of Charles R. and Bessie (Ward) Northrop.

He married Christina P. Ruling on Aug. 31, 1946, in Unadilla.

Charlie was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II. For more than 30 years, he owned and operated an auto wrecking business in Franklin.

He was a member of the Franklin American Legion Post. Charlie was an avid sportsman, and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Christina P. Northrop of Franklin; his children, Judy  Jones of Sidney, Norman Northrop and his wife, Elizabeth, of Unadilla, Linda Northrop and Peggy Archer of Sidney and Elizabeth Cobb of Dansville; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Edwin Youngs of Unadilla; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service to celebrate his life will be held later, with a time to be announced.

There will be no calling hours, and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wells Bridge or Unadilla Emergency Squads.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Francis R. Woods
COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Francis R. Woods, 73, of Cooperstown, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

August T. Geisler
UNADILLA — August T. Geisler, 84, of Unadilla, passed away Sunday, March 21, 1999, in Unadilla.

He was born Aug. 12, 1914, to the late Frank and Valerie Geisler in Newark, N.J.

He was a Fagan Flyer in Fagan Airport in Sidney, and attended Sacred Heart Church in Sidney. He was a retired machinist.

His wife, Madalyn, predeceased him in 1994.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kathleen Geisler of Lakehurst, N.J.; a daughter, Valerie Geisler of New York City; and three grandchildren.

He is predeceased by a brother, Edward Geisler.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 26, 1999, at Sacred Heart Church in Sidney at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, officiating.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.
