Anne Elizabeth (Peters) Lewis
HOBART — Anne Elizabeth (Peters) Lewis, 75, of Sara's Senior Care Residence in South Kortright for the past several years, passed away Thursday, April 8, 1999.

She was the daughter of John W. and Nellie (Jaquish) Peters. She was born March 13, 1924, in Stamford.

She was a graduate of South Kortright Central School and Albany College of Beauticians. She worked prior to her marriage for her mother at Nellie Peters Beauty Shop in Hobart.

She was a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church and was a devout Christian.

Anne is survived by two sons, George and Wayne Lewis of Gilboa; two daughters, Carla Reinhart of Flippin, Ariz., and Debbie Lewis of Port Orange, Fla.; three grandchildren and a brother, John W. Peters of Westfield Center, Ohio.

Calling hours will take place Friday, April 16, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. The funeral will be Saturday, April 17, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Hobart United Methodist Church, with Pastor Richard Elder officiating. Interment will follow in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Murl N. Reed
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Murl N. Reed, 71, of Old School Court in Cooperstown, died Saturday afternoon, April 10, 1999, at her home.

She was born on Aug. 19, 1927, in Garrattsville, a daughter of Ray and Dorothy (Spoor) Nearing.

She married Donald C. Reed Jr. on Aug. 21, 1948, in Cooperstown.

Murl was raised in the Garratsville area and graduated from the Morris Central School in 1945. Following her graduation from the Powlson Institute, she began a 36-year career with the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, where she worked in the field of Nuclear Medicine. Upon retirement, Murl became an active volunteer at the Susquehanna SPCA.

A very dedicated member of Christ Church in Cooperstown, Murl taught Sunday School for 30 years and served on the Vestry. She was also a former member of the Otsego County Republican Committee serving the Town of Otsego, was past president of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 Women's Auxiliary in Cooperstown, and at one time served as a Cub Scout Den Mother as well as on the PTA.

Murl was extremely devoted to her church and family and will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Murl is survived by her husband of 50 years, Don; two daughters and one son-in-law, Donabeth Reed of Cooperstown and Jacqueline and James McCartney of Richmond Hill, Ga.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kirk and Jane Reed of Denver,  Colo., Scott and Bonnie Reed of Birmingham, Ala., and Alan R. Reed of Laguna Beach,  Calif.; seven grandchildren, Kelcy and Richard Kimmerer, Kenny and A.J. McCartney, and Megan C. Reed, Dana Reed and Ashley Reed; one sister, Lois N. Nearing of  Washington, D.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Kay Nearing of Hancock; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service, with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist, will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at Christ Church in Cooperstown, with the Very Rev. Douglas C. Smith, Rector, officiating. Committal and interment services will follow in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to The Christ Church All Souls Fund, care of Christ Church, 69 Fair St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or The Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Carmen M. Payeur
HOUGHTON — Carmen M. Payeur, "loving mother and grandmother."

Carmen M. Payeur of the College Park Health Care Center passed away Friday, April 9, 1999, in the Olean General Hospital.

She was born June 28, 1921, in Quebec, Canada. She was the daughter of Emil and Cecile La Flamme St. Pierre.

On July 4, 1941, in West Dearborn, Mich., she married Paul E. Payeur, who survives.

Mrs. Payeur was a giving woman who loved taking care of her husband and family. She also loved singing, sewing and doing crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Payeur lived in many parts of the world including Alaska, while her husband was in the United States Air Force. Even after her husband retired from the Air Force they continued to live in Chugiak, Alaska, because they loved the area. In the fall of 1998, they moved to Houghton to live with their daughter.

Mrs. Payeur was a member and past president of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary and V.F.W. and the Eagle River Elks Club in Alaska.

She was a longtime supporter of the Iditarod Dog Sled Race and the annual Fur Rendezvous. She was also committed to the preservation of the Alaskan wilderness.

Mrs. Payeur is survived by her devoted husband; four daughters, Yvonne M. (Frank) Bellis of Houghton, Lee (Bob) Curtis of Republic, Miss., Elaine (Ray) Ulm of Sidney and Madelyn (Jack) Boyd of Hayword,  Calif.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene Sullivan of Taylor, Mich.; and her beloved dog, Sintar.

Mrs. Payeur was predeceased by two brothers, Al St. Pierre and Joe St. Pierre, and one sister, Annette Martinez.

There will be no public visitation or funeral.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Western New York Chapter, 315 Alberta Dr., Amherst, N.Y. 14226.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., No. 646 E. State St., Olean.

Robert Engstrom-Heg
NORTH FRANKLIN — Robert T. Engstrom-Heg, 75, of North Franklin, died unexpectedly in his sleep, Thursday, April 8, 1999, while on a cross-country skiing trip with his wife in the Chic-Choc Mountains of northeastern Quebec. His body arrived at the hospital 13 hours later after being brought out of the mountains by snowmobile.

He was born in Seattle, Wash., on March 19, 1924, the son of Hans and Jessie Heg.

He married Verna Engstrom on May 23, 1954.

He lived in North Franklin since 1966.

He was a fisheries biologist. He retired from New York State Department of Envrionmental Conservation, where he worked for 24 years.

He was an avid poet, cross-country skier, story teller, writer and orienteer. He was the meet director for many local orienteering and ski-orienteering meets.

He was a longtime member of the Oneonta Unitarian Universalist Church and was active in the issues class at the First United Methodist Church. He represented the UU Church on the Oneonta Interfaith Committee and is the former chair of the committee.

In World War II, he served in the Navy in the Pacific.

He is survived by his wife, Verna; sons, Leif and Martin; and close family friend, Neil Clarke.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 18, 1999, in the Unitarian Universalist Church, Ford Avenue, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Bob to The Jerusalem Princess Basma Centre for Disabled Children, P.O. Box 19764, Jerusalem, 91197, Israel.

Mervin Ferguson
ONEONTA — Mr. Mervin Leo Ferguson, 36, of Oneonta, passed away on Sunday, April 11, 1999.

He was born on April 11, 1963, in New Berlin, the son of Arthur and Delores (Hoffman) Ferguson.

On March 25, 1991, he married Diana Lynn (Mondore) Ferguson in Richfield Springs.

He is survived by his wife, Diana L. Ferguson of Springfield Center; two sons, Michael and Dustin Ferguson; two daughters, Marlena and DeLiza Ferguson; and one stepson, David Jeffers II, all of Springfield Center; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, David and Angel (Clapper) Ferguson of Oneonta, Tim and Ethel (Kleingardner) Ferguson of Franklin and Rodney Ferguson of Oneonta; one sister and a brother-in-law, Brenda and Kevin (Ferguson) Roe of Davenport; six nephews and a niece, Luke, Joshua, David, Nathan and Logan Ferguson,  Taylor Roe and Alice Alger.

Merv was predeceased by his father, Arthur Ferguson, and a brother, Mark Ferguson.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen L. Reese, of the Columbus Community Church, officiating. Burial will be at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Mary Natale Bobnick
ROTTERDAM — Mary E. Natale Bobnick, 86, of Palma Avenue, Rotterdam, died Sunday, April 11, 1999,
She was born in Kodasha. She lived in Rotterdam for more than 33 years. She died in St. Clare's Hospital, Schenectady.

She worked for five years at New York Telephone, and General Electric, Schenectady, for five years.

She attended Albany Business School.

She was the beloved wife of 45 years of Victor P. Bobnick Sr. of Rotterdam, mother of Victor P. Bobnick of Singerlands, sister of Comelia Lozier of Delmar, Nicholas Natale of Orange City, Fla., and Dominic Natale of Los Angeles,  Calif. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Worcester for a Mass of Christian Burial.

Calling hours will be at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam, Tuesday evening, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made in Mary's memory to St. Clare's Hospital Foundation, 600 McClellan St., Schenectady, N.Y. 12304-9980 and St. Joseph's Church in Worcester.

Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Worcester at a later date.

Gladys Hitt Burdick
BLOOMVILLE — Gladys Mary Hitt Burdick, 92, of Bloomville, died Tuesday, April 13, 1999.

She was born Jan. 30, 1907, in Davenport, the daughter of George and Maibel (Shelly) Hitt.

She married Frank L. Burdick on June 2, 1923. He predeceased her on March 1, 1979.

Mrs. Burdick worked at Greendell Packing in Prattsville for 15 years before retiring. She was a member of the Bloomville Grange for 50 years and a lifetime member of the National Grange.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and enjoyed the gospel and served many callings in the church.

A wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, she loved to spend time with her family, especially watching the children play. She loved to serve others and was always willing to help anyone she could. Gladys had a love for food and was a terrific baker and also enjoyed playing cards with her Card Club.

She is survived by her children, Leonard and MaryEllen Burdick of Oneonta, Mildred and Thomas Camb of Bovina, Alden and Janice Burdick of Bloomville and Ford Burdick of Bloomville; a son-in-law, Lyle Wilson of Delhi; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Earl Hitt of Sherburne and Ford Hitt of Norwich, and two sisters, Harriet Gesell of Delhi and Evelyn Quackenbush of Bloomville.

Two daughters, Elsie B. Wilson and Edna Frances Burdick; a son, Marion Burdick; a daughter-in-law, Belle Burdick; two sisters, Bertha Truax and Mildred Decker; and a brother, Gerald Hitt, predeceased her.

Calling hours will take place Thursday, April 15, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. The funeral will be Friday, April 16, 1999, at 10 a.m. with President Baldauf officiating at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Bovina Emergency Squad or the Bloomville Emergency Squad.

Harold Markert Sr.
DAVENPORT CENTER — Harold E. Markert Sr., 95, of Davenport Center, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

Arrangements are pending at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Richard J. Reed
HOBART — Richard J. Reed, 78, retired athletic director at South Kortright Central School, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Holy Cross Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

He was born Dec. 10, 1920, in Roxbury. He married Constance Formichella Reed on July 11, 1949.

Dick was educated in Roxbury High School, Roxbury, and Ithaca College, Ithaca, where he earned his bachelor's of science and master's of science degrees.

He was a veteran of the United States Army as a technical sergeant W/246th Chemical Services Platoon, from January 1942-December 1945. He served in the South Pacific including the Philippines and Guadal Canal and was a member of VFW Post 6292, Stamford.

Coach Reed retired as athletic director from South Kortright Central School, where he coached soccer, basketball, baseball, track and golf. He was elected to the N.Y.S.P.H.S. Section 4 Hall of Fame. He was a former member and director of the Stamford Golf Club; charter member and first vice president of the Stamford Kiwanis Club; member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Stamford, and Saint Sebastian Catholic Church, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Dick is survived by his wife, Constance Reed of Hobart; a son, Michael Reed of Florida; a sister, Alice Kasmer of Roxbury; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass was held March 29, 1999, at Saint Sebastian Catholic Church, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Stamford, Saturday, April 17, 1999, at 11 a.m., with Fr. John Burns officiating.

There will be no visiting hours.

Donations in his memory may be sent to Palliative Care, Holy Cross Hospital, 4725 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 33308.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
