Valentino Castronuovo
BLOOMVILLE — Valentino Castronuovo, 77, of Bloomville passed away Saturday, April 17, 1999.

He was born Sept. 20, 1921, in Bayonne, N.J., the son of Carmelo and Agatha (Certo) Castronuovo.

He married Antoinette Carulli in 1943, in New York City.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army.

Mr. Castronuovo was a clinical engineer at Middlesex General Hospital in New Jersey.

His memberships included: Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus in South Kortright; the Donald W. Gleason American Legion, Delhi; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Delhi.

Valentino is survived by his wife at home in Bloomville; two sons, Carmelo M. Castronuovo and Frank Castronuovo of New Jersey; a daughter, Agatha Papugolis of New Jersey; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson; and two brothers, John Castronuovo of Florida and Frank Castronuovo of Long Island.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at 10 a.m. in the Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, South Kortright, with Father John Burns, officiating. Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will be following the service in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, N.Y. 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Agnes A. Gardella
ONEONTA — Agnes A. Gardella, 89, of Oneonta died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born March 14, 1910, in New Holstein, Wis., the daughter of Edward and Erna ( Schmidt) Laures.

She married Stephen Haney in 1932, and he died in 1951. In 1960, she married Frank Gardella, who died in 1992.

Agnes has been an area resident since 1922. After her graduation from the Oneonta High School, she was employed at Kresge's. After the death of ther first husband, she worked for a period of time for Woolworth's. Her last position was with Ancillary Services at the State University College of Oneonta, from which she retired.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church.

Agnes is survived by two sons, Robert Haney of Aurora,  Colo. and Gary Haney of Center Moriches; and a stepson, Ronald Gardella of Schenectady; two daughters, Joan Mattice of Bay Shore and Donna Shaver of Laurens; and a stepdaughter, Mona Kaskall of Clinton; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lydia Sager of Ormond Beach, Fla. She is also survived by two nieces and one nephew.

She was predeceased by two brothers and a sister, Harvey and Lester Laures, and Helen Sager.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call tonight from 7 to 8 at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Donald G. Wilmot
ALBANY, Ga. — CWO Donald G. Wilmot, United States Air Force, (retired) passed away Saturday, April 3, 1999, in Albany, Ga.

He was born in Cherry Valley on May 29, 1907, the son of George H. and Jennie (Kane) Wilmot.

He attended Albany Business College and was employed by Tebbutt's Funeral Home in Albany, N.Y. In 1942, he joined the Air Force. He served in World War II and the Korean War. He was chief instructor of the Finance School, Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, and was an agent finance officer to NATO in Denmark.

He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Kiwanis Club, Retired Officers Association, YMCA and Walter Burt American Post No. 30.

In 1943, he married Eleanor (Duwe) Adams. She predeceased him on Dec. 26, 1992. In 1993, he married Kathleen Beck, who survives.

He is also survived by a nephew, Gerald Wilmot of Cherry Valley; a niece, Susan Haris of Seattle; and six great-nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, G. Hubert Wilmot and a sister, Lois Brunjes.

A memorial service was held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, April 6, 1999, in Albany, Ga., he was cremated and his cremains will be interned in the family plot in Cherry Valley.

On April 21, 1999, at 5:30 p.m. there will be a committal service at the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating.

Local arrangements are by the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Francis Pullis
HARTWICK — Francis Edward Pullis, 98, formerly of South Street in Hartwick, died Thursday morning, April 15, 1999, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born on Oct. 26, 1900, in Easton, Pa., the son of Oscar B. and Mae (Robbins) Pullis.

He first married Wilma Rosamond Olmstead on July 11, 1931, at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Owego. She died on June 22, 1980. He then married Dr. Steffie Baker, on Nov. 24, 1982, in the St. Agnes Chapel of Christ Church in Cooperstown with the Rev. Canon George F. French officiating. Dr. Baker died on Feb. 2, 1999.

Following his graduation from high school, Fran went to work for IBM and received a college degree four years later. He later became manager of the Commercial Art and Graphic Design Department of the IBM Federal Systems Division facility at Owego, retiring in 1965. During his tenure with IBM, Fran taught Technical Illustrating at the IBM School in Endicott for 3½ years, as well as drawing and sketching for two years at the IBM Country Club.

He had resided in Binghamton for 49 years before moving to Hartwick.

Fran was a member of the Otseningo Lodge No. 435 Free and Accepted Masons in Binghamton; the Otseningo Bodies, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Binghamton; Kalurah Shrine, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in Binghamton; and the Otsego County Shrine Club in Schenevus.

He was a charter member of the Arnold Lake Cottager's Association, and shortly after its inception was appointed chairman of the Fish and Game Committee. He also served on its historical committee. He was a member of the Hartwick Rod and Gun Club and the Endicott, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association.

An avid and accomplished marksman, Fran was a member of the National Rifle Association and was a competition and trick shooter from 1920 until 1930. He gave many demonstrations at sportsmen's shows and club meetings.

A United States Army veteran, he served in the 13th Regiment of the  Pennsylvania National Guard (later the 109th United States Army Infantry) and qualified every year as Expert Rifleman and Expert Pistol Shooter. He was a member of the  Pennsylvania National Shooting Team that entered the National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio, in 1923, won the state of  Pennsylvania National Guard Pistol Championship in 1924, and the Military and Police National Pistol Championship at Seagirt the same year.

Fran is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Lou and Bart Peak Jr. of Greenback, Tenn.; one son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Reita Pullis of Binghamton; three grandsons, Garry Pullis and his wife, Jessica, and Kevin and John Pullis; two granddaughters, Gretchen (Mrs. Dale) Waltemire of Yonges Island, S.C., and Hilary Holz (Mrs. Scott Holz-Bodarky) of Potomac, Md.; one great-grandson, Russell Holz; two great-granddaughters, Emily Pullis and Willow Waltemire; two nieces, Nancy Snyders and her husband, Gill, of Newport News, Va., and Diane Hirt and her husband, Art, of Cazenovia, and their families.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mrs. Arthur (Alice) W. Anderson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

Inurnment will take place in the Christ Church Cemetery Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Christ Church All Souls Fund, care of Christ Church, 69 Fair St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326; the Hartwick Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 208, Hartwick, N.Y. 13348-0208; The Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326; or to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Wilkie T. Maddox Jr.
MUNCIE, Ind. — Wilkie T. "Wil" Maddox Jr., 69, Muncie, Ind., died Saturday morning, April 17, 1999, at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, Ind., after an extended illness.

He was born in Baltimore, Md., attended schools in Long Island, N.Y., and Cherry Valley, N.Y., where he graduated from high school, and graduated from credit management training school.

Mr. Maddox was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, moved to Indiana in 1965, and lived in several communities before moving to Muncie, Ind., in 1992.

He worked as a credit manager for several companies, including Stewart Carey Glass, Modern Photo and Gas Tech in Speedway, where he was on the board of directors in 1997, and retired in September of 1998.

He was a statistician for the Indiana Pacers for 13 years, starting with them at the beginning of ABA. He was a member of Hazelwood Christian Church, where he was a trustee, Credit Men's Association, and the Masonic Lodge in Ellenville, N.Y.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Mary Hanlon Maddox; a daughter, Anne Voiles of Coatesville, Ind.; a granddaughter, Mari Courtney Voiles of Coatesville, Ind.; a sister, Jean Belt of Atlanta, Ga.; a niece; and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilkie T. Maddox Sr. and Nettie Stiles Maddox, and a stepson, John Roberts Maddox.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Hazelwood Christian Church, Muncie, Ind. Cremation will follow with burial of cremains in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood, Ind. Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, and after 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Hazelwood Christian Church, Muncie, Ind.

J.H. William Tietjen
DELHI — J.H. William Tietjen, 91, of Delhi, passed away Monday, April 19, 1999, at O'Connor Hospital.

He was born Sept. 11, 1907, in Brooklyn, the son of John and Catherine (Muhlhawsen) Tietjen.

Oct. 11, 1931, he married the late Ethel (Fran) Uhlig and they were married for 63 years.

Mr. Tietjen owned and operated Blue Bird Company, a food distribution business on Long Island, before moving to Delhi in 1960, at which time he owned and operated a dairy farm. Before his retirement he was manager of the dairy store at the college farm for the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

A daughter, Gail Morgan of Delhi; grandchildren, Kara and Garett Morgan of Delhi, Laurie Aitken of Delhi, Wendy Waldlee of Delhi and Cindy Lynn of East Meredith; and six great-grandchildren survive.

His wife and a son, William Tietjen, predeceased him in 1994.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, April 21, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, April 22, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating. Burial will follow the service at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Marjorie Christensen
FRANKLIN — Marjorie E. Christensen, 68, of Franklin, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born May 10, 1930, in Needham, Mass., the daughter of John and Marjorie (Peak) Christensen.

She received her undergraduate degree in Boston, and her master's in tourism from Columbia University in New York.

An area resident for the past 1½, moving here from Garrison, Marjorie was self-employed, and operated Talisman Tours, a custom travel agency.

Marjorie is survived by a sister, Rosamond Syme of Franklin; two nephews, Scott Syme of Katonah and Joseph Hirko of Portland, Ore.; four nieces, Christine Bonner of Binghamton, Judy Wiese of Las Vegas, Nev., Teresa Towle of Beverly, Mass., and Mary Fryer of Spokane, Wash. She is also survived by several grandnieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 22, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Unadilla Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Helen Havlik, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Humane Society of Delaware County.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Robert D. Shea
ONEONTA — Robert D. Shea of Oneonta died Monday, April 19, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
Shea

He was born in Syracuse, the son of Harold and Arlene (McNett) Shea.

He married Jean Mangin on June 7, 1951, in Syracuse.

Bob graduated from Valley High School in Syracuse. He attended St. Bonaventure University and graduated from Syracuse University.

From 1946 to 1948, he served with the United States Marine Corps.

Bob retired in 1988 from NYNEX, where he was employed for 35 years. While with the company, he held management positions in Binghamton, Utica, Oneonta and Syracuse. For the past 10 years, following his retirement, he worked for Picketts/Oneonta Block Company.

He loved to watch his grandchildren play and grow. He especially enjoyed summers with his family and friends at his camp on Lake Ontario, while losing many a game of horseshoes.

Bob's interests varied. He bowled, traveled and frequently raised cain with his brothers of Ralph's Sunoco. He loved to play cards, drive cars as long as a city block and take walks with his lovely wife.

Bob was loved and cherished by his wife, Jean, and his children and grandchildren, Scott of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Bob and Jeanne, Matthew, Kristen and Jillian of Oneonta, Lori and Pat, Cassie and Tim McDonough of Tully, Bill of San Francisco,  Calif., Tim and Sue, and Aidan of Commack, Pete and Joanne, and Cyrus of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and his brother, Jack Shea of Kissimee, Fla.; along with two sisters-in-law; and two brothers-in-law; and nieces.

A service to celebrate the life of Bob Shea, to which friends are invited, will be held on Friday evening at 6 p.m. at the Oneonta Elks Club, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, (casual attire). Personal reflections of Bob's life will be shared by his family and friends, and the officers of BPOE 1312 who will conduct a Lodge of Sorrow. Following the service, the life celebration will continue with a reception and a time of fellowship.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Family Services Association, 277 Chestnut St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
