Harry J. Wilbur
WALTON — Dr. Harry J. "Doc" Wilbur, 82, a prominent physician and lifelong resident of Walton, died Saturday evening, April 17, 1999, at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Covington, Ky.

He was residing with his daughter, Kathleen, and her family for the past months in Union, Ky.

He was born on Nov. 21, 1916, to Harry A. and Flora (Paine) Wilbur in the family home on Holley Street in Walton.

He married the former Veronica Behr on Dec. 22, 1943, in Englewood, N.J., who predeceased him in 1984.

He was a member of First Congregational Church of Walton.

"Doc Wilbur" as he was known to many, was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the Seabees as a lieutenant commander.

He was a member of the Frank Mead Eells Post 270 VFW; the Truman C. Tobey Post 32 American Legion in Walton; the Club Royale and was a 50-year member of the Walton F&A.M. Lodge.

Dr. Wilbur retired from his general practice as a physician and was the Walton School District physician for many years. In September of 1998, Dr. Wilbur retired and was presented the "Longest Standing Medical Examiner Award" in New York state. He served the entire Delaware County as medical examiner from 1968-1998.

He was a 1934 graduate of Walton High School, a 1940 graduate of Syracuse University and did his medical training at New York Medical and New York University Medical schools.

Dr. Wilbur opened his office on Nov. 15, 1947, here in Walton.

Dr. Wilbur is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Harry J. and Connie Wilbur of Glenmont; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila M. and Richard Witkowski of Fairport and Kathleen and Joseph Carpenter of Union, Ky.; six grandchildren, Amy and Andrew Wilbur, Catherine and Michael Witkowski and Joseph and Matthew Carpenter; a sister, Pauline Salerno of Goodyear, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 22, 1999, at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church, corner of North and Mead streets, Walton, with the Rev. Paul J. Cronin, pastor of his church, officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded.

The family will receive friends at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets on Wednesday, April 21, 1999, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to St. Elizabeth Medical Center Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Helen R. Campbell
MCCONNELLSVILLE — Helen R. Campbell, 69, a longtime resident of McConnellsville, was born June 25, 1929, and passed away Monday, April 19, 1999, after a brief illness.

She was born at her family home in Middlefield, to the late Lee and Frances Bostwick Roberts.

She graduated as salutatorian from Cherry Valley High School in 1947, and married Jason Y. Campbell in 1948.

She was previously employed by the F.S. Harden Company. In 1978, after serving 12 years with the United States Postal Service, she was appointed as postmaster of the McConnellsville Post Office. She served in that capacity until her retirement in 1992.

She was an active bowler for many years, and was a charter member of the SBWBA. She was a past treasurer of the McConnellsville Fire Department and secretary/treasurer of the McConnellsville Fire District Commissioners.

In her retirement, she enjoyed her family, friends, pets, special projects and her home in McConnellsville.

She will be truly missed by those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her four daughters and sons-in-law and one son and daughter-in-law, Valerie and Loren Lovenguth of Williamstown, Verna and Donald Weeden of Camden, Michele Campbell and fiancee, Bob Wetherbee, of Kent, Wash., Susan and John Congden Jr. and Gregory and Maureen Campbell, all of McConnellsville.

She also leaves behind 11 loving grandchildren, Chuck and B.J. Lovenguth, Amy Weeden Gordon and Donna and Jeffrey Weeden, Jackie Campbell and John Congden III, Jason and Kirah Stevens, Michael and Maggie Campbell. Helen is also survived by three sisters, Mary Roberts of Roseboom, Pearl Pollette of Middlefield and Beulah Waid of Sharon Springs; one brother, Lee Roberts Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one son, Richard Allen (at birth), two brothers, one sister and one nephew.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 1999, from the Sanborn-McDaniels & LaRobardiere Funeral Home, Camden. Interment will be in McConnellsville Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, 109 Main St.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the McConnellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Heather Kemme
DELTONA, Fla. — Heather Marie MacDonald Kemme, 24, formerly of Sidney, passed away Sunday, April 18, 1999, in Deltona, Fla.

She was born Feb. 20, 1975, to Alvin and Deborah (Soroka) MacDonald in Sidney, N.Y.

Heather was a graduate from Bainbridge-Guilford High School, N.Y., and attended Herkimer Community College.

She assisted in homes for the mentally handicapped and was a contestant in local beauty contests.

For two years she has resided in Florida, where she enjoyed to scuba dive.

Heather was employed by Euro-2000, Hotel Bunta in Deltona, Fla.; she was formerly employed by Gosling ICF Residence in Boonville, N.Y.

Heather is survived by her mother, Deborah MacDonald and Dale Durand of Narrowsburg, N.Y.; husband, William Kemme of Rome, N.Y.; maternal grandmother, Barbara Soroka of Unadilla, N.Y.; paternal grandparents, Harold and Marie Washburn of Unadilla, N.Y.; aunts and uncles, William Soroka and Danielle Martin of Sidney, N.Y., Jennifer Soroka of Binghamton, N.Y., Monica and Terry Strickland of Jacksonville, Fla., Nancy and Eric Hendrickson of Oneonta, N.Y., David and Carolyn Soroka of Sidney, N.Y., Daniel and Debra Soroka of Vero Beach, Fla., Gordon and Lorie Soroka of Mount Upton, N.Y., Michael and Jody Soroka of Freeville, N.Y., and Zadane Soroka of Unadilla, N.Y.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Heather was predeceased by her father, Alvin MacDonald, and her maternal grandfather, William Soroka.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 23, 1999, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, N.Y., at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Dwayne Durand officiating.

Friends may call Thursday, April 22; the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Upstate Home for Children, state Route 28, Milford, N.Y. 13807 or Gosling ICF Residence, 4033 State Route 12 D., Boonville, N.Y. 13309.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney, N.Y.

Stephen J. Yager
CORTLAND — Stephen J. Yager, 51, of 13 York St., Cortland, died suddenly Saturday, April 10, 1999, in the Cortland Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born June 14, 1947, in Oneonta, the son of James H. and Kathryn Camp Yager.

He was a graduate of Gilbertsville Central School, Class of 1965, and a graduate of Buffalo State Teachers College, Class of 1969, and received his administrative certification from the State University College at Cortland.

He was a teacher at Cincinnatus Central School from 1969 to 1990, Governeur Central from 1991 to 1994, Hinsdale Central School from 1994 to 1998, and was currently employed as secondary principal at DeRuyter Central School.

He was a member of the Cuba United Methodist Church, a former member of the Cincinnatus Presbyterian Church, and a life member of the Cincinnatus Emergency Squad, and was affiliated with several professional associations.

On July 3, 1971, in Cincinnatus, he married the former Robin Brown, who survives.

Also surviving are his parents, James and Kathryn Yager of Gilbertsville; two daughters, Mrs. Jill (Russel) Currier Jr. of Governeur, and Ms. Sandra Yager of Governeur; one brother, Kevin (Virginia) Yager of Brattleboro, Vt.; and one granddaughter, Kylie Currier; mother-in-law, Mrs. Virginia Brown of Cincinnatus; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the United Presbyterian Church, Cincinnatus, with the Rev. Jerry Halbert, of Binghamton Methodist Church, the Rev. Ronald Reichman, of the Cuba Methodist Church, and the Rev. Bryan Powell, pastor of the Cincinnatus Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment was at the  Taylor Cemetery.

Contributions in Mr. Yager's memory may be made to the Cincinnatus Emergency Squad or the United Presbyterian Church of Cincinnatus.

Michael Carey
BRISTOL, Conn. — Michael Joseph Carey, 33, of Bristol, Conn., passed away on Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at home.

He was the husband of Joan (Blanchard) Carey.

He was born in Cooperstown, N.Y., on April 14, 1966, the son of Jeanne (Wilmarth) and the late Edward Carey Sr.

He was a 1984 graduate of Cooperstown Central High School, and attended Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute, where he, in 1988, earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, in 1998 earned his master's degree in metallurgy and was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity.

Michael also enjoyed sailing, mountain biking and woodworking. He was a member of St. Matthew Church in Forestville, Conn.

Besides his wife and mother, he leaves his son, Theodore John Carey of Bristol, Conn.; a brother, Edward Carey Jr. of Pittsford, Vt.; a sister, Jill Erickson of Norwich, Vt.; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. John T. Wilmarth of Silver Springs, Md.; two aunts, Susan Travers of Bristol, N.H., and Helen Wilmarth of Silver Springs, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, John Thomas Carey.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 23, 1999, at 8:30 a.m. from Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., Plainville, Conn., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Church, Forestville, Conn. Calling hours will be held on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Fly Creek Cemetery, Fly Creek, N.Y., at a time to be announced.

Memorial donations in Michael's name, can be made to the National Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Foundation, 21021 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills,  Calif. 91364.

LeRoy Mansheffer
MARGARETVILLE — LeRoy W. Mansheffer, 77, of Margaretville, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 10, 1921, in Cobleskill, the son of Charles Mansheffer Sr. and Mabel Pierce.

He married Joyce Gabriel at the St. James Episcopal Church, Lake Delaware, on March 21, 1947.

He was in World War II, he served in the Army, 1941-1945.

He was a manager for Victory and the Great American Store in Margaretville, where he worked for 25 years. He later worked for Dalrymple's Variety Store and Agway in Margaretville.

He was a member of the St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, and the Delhi American Legion Post.

Roy spent many hours reading, which he enjoyed.

Roy is survived by his wife, Joyce Mansheffer of Margaretville; his son, Robert, and his wife, Deborah, of Margaretville; three brothers, David, Charles and Harold; one sister, Delia Kipp; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 22, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. R.L. Donahue officiating. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, where military honors will be conducted.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made in memory of Roy Mansheffer to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Arthur J. Aikens
HAMDEN — Arthur J. Aikens, 90, of Hamden, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at the Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton.

He was born Sept. 20, 1908, in the town of Hamden, the son of Joseph and Mary McKee Aikens.

He married Helen M. Wilson on May 28, 1936, in Bovina Center.

He was an auctioneer and appraiser for many years and also worked for various other businesses.

He lived in Hamden for 63 years.

He was a 50-year member of DeLancey United Presbyterian Church, a 50-year member of Delhi Masonic Lodge, Democrat committeeman for town of Hamden for 50 years and honored twice as Democrat Man of the Year. He was town supervisor of Hamden for 16 years and past councilman, former member of the town Planning Board, member of the Delhi Rotary Club and many other clubs and organizations.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Helen (Tillie) Aikens of Hamden; a daughter and son-in-law, L. Ann and Richard Liddle of Andes; one sister, Madalin Lockwood of Unadilla; and two grandsons, Roger and Daniel Liddle.

Graveside service will be held Thursday, April 22, 1999, at 1 p.m., at the Andes Cemetery, Andes, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister and the Rev. H. Leigh Holder-Bolso officiating. Burial will be in the Andes Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to Delhi Emergency or Andes or DeLancey Presbyterian Churches.

Arrangements are by the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home, Andes.

Beryl A. Reif
SIDNEY — Beryl A. Reif, 78, of Sidney, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at her home.

She was born Nov. 15, 1920, to the late Wyman and Ruth (McLaughlin) Denison in Arcade.

She married Elmer Cyril Reif on Aug. 12, 1939, in Arcade. He predeceased her in 1986.

Beryl is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Michael Lisafeld; two sons and daughters-in-law, Philip and Dee Reif of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Michael D. and Dorothy Reif of Sidney; grandchildren, Michaleen, Michael C., John, Casie and Angie; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Danielle, Katie and Nathan.

She was predeceased by a son, Richard Reif.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 24, 1999, at the Jehovahs Witness Kingdom Hall of Sidney at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc. 21 Main St., Sidney.
