Marie Kowal
MORGANTON, N.C. — Marie Hein Kowal, 88, of Ponderosa Road, Morganton, N.C., and formerly of Franklin, N.Y., died unexpectedly Friday night, April 23, 1999, at Grace Hospital, N.C.

She was born May 4, 1910, in Branitz, Germany. She was a daughter of the late Johann Hein and Marie Seltzer Hein. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Josef Kowal; a brother, Josef Hein; and sisters, Martha Hein and Hedwig Hein.

She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

Marie is survived by two daughters, Johanna Koopmann of Delhi, N.Y., and Hildegard Derke of Morganton, N.C.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 26, 1999, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ken Whittington officiating. Burial followed at Burke Memorial Park, N.C.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Building Fund, 728 W. Union St., Morganton, N.C. 28655.

Margaret Bannwarth
COOPERSTOWN — Committal services and burial for Mrs. Margaret Bannwarth, 79, of Murphy Hill in the town of Middlefield, who died April 6, 1999, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 30, 1999, at the Westville Cemetery, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor of the Middlefield Parish Churches, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Leona Kipp
WALTON — Leona Kipp, 96, of Walton, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

Leona was born April 20, 1903, in Rock Royal, the daughter of George and Jennie V. Walley.

She was married to Ivan J. Kipp, who predeceased her in 1986.

Leona was a lifelong Walton area resident. She enjoyed writing poems and songs.

Leona is survived by her daughter, Jane Bell of Walton; sister, Ruth Seymour of Delhi; granddaughter, Dawn McDowell and husband, Jack, of Michigan; and great-grandson, Theodore McDowell. Also surviving is her niece, Bernice Cook, who lived with her for 61 years.

Funeral service will be on Saturday, May 1, 1999, at 11 a.m., at Clark & Winter Funeral Home, Walton, with the Rev. Lawrence Dunlap, pastor of Walton United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery immediately following.

Calling hours on Friday, April 30, 1999, at the funeral home with the family in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials to the Walton Emergency Squad in her name appreciated.

Ellen Medansky
COOPERSTOWN — A graveside service for Ellen Medansky, who died March 25, 1999, will be Saturday, May 1, 1999, at 10 a.m. in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Ellen was born on Sept. 17, 1922, in Connecticut. She has been a resident at The Meadows since 1983, and has enjoyed the Adult Enrichment Center as well as attending Girl Scouts twice a month.

Committal service will be conducted by the Rev. John C. Young.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Marion E. Miller
ONEONTA — Marion E. Miller, 67, died unexpectedly and went home to be with the Lord, Friday, April 16, 1999, at the University Community Hospital in Tampa, Fla., near Thonotosassa, Fla., where she had been a seasonal resident since 1984.

Marion was born in New Lisbon, on March 31, 1932, daughter of Floyd and Eva (Chase) Fenton.

In 1950, she married Frederick Miller of Oneonta.

She was the owner of Marion's Beauty Shop of West Oneonta, a former member of the Oneonta Woman's Business Association and the Ladies Auxiliary for the West Oneonta Fire Department.

Marion found joy in playing with her grandchildren, traveling with her motorcycle partner and best friend, Fred (her beloved husband), and the many friends she made throughout her life.

Marion is survived by her husband, Frederick L. Miller; two sons, Frederick L. Miller of Syracuse and Douglas L. Miller of Bohemia; two daughters, Diana L. Goble of Oneonta and Ronda L. Monington of Cumberland, Md.; her mother, Eva Fenton of Norwich; three brothers, Stanley Fenton of Parrish, Fla., Ralph Fenton of New Berlin and Donald Fenton of Summerville, S.C.; a sister, Marjorie Boise of South New Berlin; and seven grandchildren.

Friends and family are invited to an open house to celebrate her life on Saturday, May 8, 1999, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Elm Park Church in Oneonta.

Irene R. Hoyt
BINGHAMTON — Irene R. Hoyt, 93, and a life resident of Bainbridge passed away Friday, April 30, at the Good Shepherd, Fairview Home in Binghamton.

She was born April 27, 1906, to the late Fred and Maude Rosencrantz Robbins in Bainbridge.

Irene married Ernest Hoyt on Aug. 18, 1926, in Bainbridge.

She was a librarian for the Bainbridge Free Library. Irene also played the organ for churches in Bainbridge for many years. She was also a member of the DAR of Bainbridge, the Women's Club of Bainbridge and the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge.

Irene is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Ernest L. Hoyt at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Charles  White of Ithaca; a sister, Barbara Felske of Bainbridge; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Irene was predeceased by a daughter, Lois Hoyt.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 4, at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge. The Rev. Sundar Samuels, pastor, will officiate.

Friends may call Monday, May 3. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Hiram M. Tiffany
COOPERSTOWN — Hiram M. Tiffany, 78, of The Meadows and formerly of Oneonta, died April 28, 1999, at The Meadows after a lengthy illness.

He was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Oneonta, the son of Hiram and Agnes (Reynolds) Tiffany. He was never married.

Mr. Tiffany was a World War II veteran having served with the United States Army Air Corp. in the Asiatic Theater of Operations.

He was a life long area resident and a graduate of Oneonta High School.

He is survived by his brother, Samuel Tiffany of Buffalo; one nephew, Donald S. Tiffany of Buffalo; and a friend, Leta C. Loucks.

Funeral services will be held later at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Harlon R. Briscoe
COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Harlon R. Briscoe, 86, of Cooperstown, formerly of Maryland, died Jan. 1, 1999.

An interment service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

The family will receive friends at the home of Millie Robbins, Goodyear Lake, following the burial.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Jane C. Cummings
ONEONTA — Mrs. Jane C. Cummings, 94, of Oneonta died Sunday morning, May 2, 1999, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

She was born Jan. 31, 1905, in Binghamton, the daughter of Charles H. and Jane (Carson) Buck.

Jane married Thomas J. Cummings on July 15, 1924, in Oneonta. Mr. Cummings died Feb. 21, 1978.

She owned and operated the Klipnockey Bar and Grill, Oneonta with her husband, Tom, for several years and had also been employed by the Homer Folks Hospital for 25 years, prior to her retirement.

A graduate of Oneonta High School, Jane also had attended Albany Business College.

She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, and the Oneonta Golden Age Club.

Jane is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Gerald A. (Jane C.) Fisher of Oneonta; eight grandchildren, Thomas G. Fisher of  Jefferson, John F. Fisher of Otego, Michael D. Fisher of DeLand, Fla., Marsha A. Fisher of Oneonta, Kathleen F. DuBois of Queensbury, Jane C. Messier of Oneonta, William Paparteys of Manahawkin, N.J. and Jane C. Hartmann of Old Bridge, N.J.; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Lou Paparteys, a sister, Helen Buck, a brother, Charles Buck Jr., and two great-grandchildren, Krista Renee Friis and Brian Thomas Fisher.

Funeral prayers will be offered 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, thence to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church at 2 p.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Edith T. Holland
DELHI — Edith T. Holland, 86, of Avondale, Ariz., passed away April 27, 1999.

She was born May 21, 1912, in Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of Amil and Selma Thompson.

She married William T. Holland on April 14, 1936, in Haworth, N.J. He died March 10, 1972.

Mrs. Holland was educated at Englewood Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1933. Following graduation she worked as a public health nurse in Jersey City. After moving to Delhi in 1951, she was employed as a nurse at Delhi Hospital from 1952. She served as director of nursing at the hospital during the late 1960s and retired in 1977.

She was a member of United Ministry of Delhi. Her hobbies included knitting and playing cards.

In 1994, Mrs. Holland moved to Litchfield Park, Ariz., to live with her daughter. In April 1998, she entered Royal Sun West Care Center, Avondale, Ariz., where she resided until her death.

Edith is survived by a son, William T. Holland Jr. and his wife, Joyce of Meridale; a daughter, Margaret Gibson and her husband, Richard of Litchfield Park, Ariz.; and four grandchildren, Matthew Gibson of California, Marianne Gibson of Litchfield Park, Ariz., Johanna Holland of New York City, and Allison Holland of Meridale.

She was predeceased by her husband, William, and two brothers, Arthur and Norman.

Graveside services will take place at the convenience of the family at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Dean F. Thorn
FISHKILL — Dean F. Thorn, 58, of the town of Fishkill died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at Vassar Brothers Hospital, Poughkeepsie.

Dean was born in Cooperstown on March 10, 1941, the son of the late Kent M. and Carolyn Roberts Thorn.

He was a graduate of Morrisville Ag and Tech (SUNY Morrisville).

He was a Fishkill resident since 1973. He moved here from Albany.

Dean was owner of Valley Optical in Wappingers and employed by Lens Crafters in the Poughkeepsie Galleria. He furnished the safety glasses at IBM for many years.

Dean was a member of St. Columba Church in Hopewell Junction, the Contact Lens Society and The National Guild Opticians Society.

On Sept. 8, 1990, in Fishkill he married Rosemary McReynolds, who survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Colleen Thorn of Albany and Carolyn Thorn at home; a stepdaughter, Tricia Kennedy of Waltham, Mass.; and a stepson, Thomas Kennedy of Columbia, S.C.; three brothers, S. Richard Thorn of Oneonta, Donald Thorn of Manchester and David Thorn of Milford; a sister, Joyce Hurley of Oneonta; and four nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, May 1, 1999, at 9 a.m. in the Church of St. Columba, Route 82, Hopewell Junction. Burial was held in Fishkill Rural Cemetery.

For those who desire, a memorial doantion to honor Dean's memory may be sent to the American Heart Association Kandr Building, 22 IBM Rd., Suite 108, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Sopris Funeral Home, Inc., Route 9-W, Coxsackie.

Gordon VanDeusen
ONEONTA — Gordon VanDeusen, 74, of Oneonta died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 24, 1924, in Oneonta, the son of Thering and Edna Philips VanDeusen.

He was a veteran of World War II, and a member of the American Legion in Oneonta. His employment was with the D&H Railroad and as a custodial engineer for the State University College at Oneonta.

Survivors include four sons, Edward of Oneonta, Gary of Florida, Phillip of Oneonta and Gordon T. of Mount Vision; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Leonard VanDeusen of Oneonta.

There will be a graveside service at the convenience of the family at Davenport Cemetery.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.
