Pheobe V. Palmer
LANCASTER, Ohio — Pheobe V. Palmer, 91, formerly of Meridale, died Friday, May 14, 1999 in Rockmill Rehabilitation Center, Lancaster, Ohio.

She was a retired school teacher in the Oneonta Public Schools.

She is survived by sons, Bruce (Bunny) Palmer of Canal Winchester, Ohio and Ivan Jerimiah (Linda) Palmer of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, William (Patricia) Palmer of New York, Robert Palmer of Columbus, Ohio, Corrie Palmer, Ryan Palmer and Sean Palmer, all of Raleigh, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Rachel Palmer of Columbus, Ohio and a sister, Mildred Seeley of Arizona.

Memorial funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Lithopolis United Methodist Church, 80 N. Market St., Lithopolis, Ohio with Pastor Clark Hess officiating.

Interment will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Meridale at a later date.

Friends who wish may contribute to Lithopolis United Methodist Church in Pheobe's memory.

Arrangements are by the Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home and Crematory, Canal Winchester, Ohio.

Frank E. Valentine
WORCESTER — Frank E. Valentine, 95, of Worcester died Friday, May 14, 1999 at his residence after a lengthy illness.

He was born Nov. 29, 1903 in Ossining, the son of Frank Eli and Josephine (Enzinger) Valentine.

He married Dorothy Morrow on June 5, 1928 in Tarrytown. She predeceased him Nov. 29, 1995.

Frank was formerly of Ossining, moving to Worcester in 1971.

He was proficient as a stone mason and in all masonry work. His family business, Frank E. Valentine and Sons, was one of the major contractors in the building of Sing Sing Prison. He was also employed by Petroleum Heat and Power Co. Inc. in Tarrytown for more than 25 years, delivering oil.

Frank was a member of the Independent Hose Company in Ossining, joining in 1920 and drove the first motorized fire truck for the company. He was also a member of the Antique Automobile Club of Westchester County, the Teamsters Local 456 of Elmsford, the Radium Masonic Lodge in Ossining, the Ossining Boat and Canoe club for many years, the Worcester Fire Department, Worcester Historical Society and the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 138.

He is survived by two sons, Frank M. Valentine of Worcester and Thomas and his wife Mary Valentine of Copperas Cove,  Texas; two daughters, Marjorie and her husband George Partelow and Isabella and her husband Rocco Bonadies, all of Worcester; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; two nieces, Myrtle Weldman of Worcester and Jean Fowler of Jackson, Tenn. and a great-niece, Kelda Huntington of Westford.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, 1999 at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

The Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

Calling hours will be today from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral chapel. There will be a firemen's service at 8 p.m.

Contributions may be made in memory of Frank to the Worcester Fire Department, P.O. Box 24, Worcester, the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197 or the Independent Hose Co., Ossining.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Zuella B. Winne
ONEONTA — Zuella Butler Winne, 91, of Green Manor Nursing Home, Route 66, Ghent and formerly of Oneonta died May 15, 1999 at her residence after a short illness.

Born Sept. 10, 1907 at Glen, McKean County,  Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Henry James Butler and Theresa Imogene Weed.

She was a graduate of Olean High School in 1923 and Albany State Teachers College in 1927. She taught history and Latin at Milford High School from 1927 to 1942. Subsequently she taught at Hartwick College during World War II and served as substitute teacher at various area schools, after the war.

She resided in Oneonta from 1947-1998 at various locations. She was an active member of the Oneonta Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, since 1945. She served at various times as regent, treasurer, assistant treasurer, registrar, recording secretary and chairman of the Lineage Committee. She served numerous times as a delegate to the annual National Convention. She was National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution District VI director from 1971-72.

She copied/typed many source genealogy records for local libraries. An example of this was her copying/typing of Ezra Stevens' "History of Milford" to which she added an index. As indicated by genealogical study, Mrs. Winne was both a distant relative to the Marquis of Ormonde and Vice President Al Gore.

She has belonged to the Oneonta Branch of the American Association of University Women since 1940. She was likewise a member of the Oneonta Women's Club and served for a number of years as a volunteer at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta gift shop. She was for many years a parishioner and an altar server at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta. Her hobbies were cards, reading and landscape painting. The painting was done with art groups at Cooperstown and Gilbertsville.

She is the wife of the late Russell A. Winne. They married Aug. 20, 1930 at the St. Mary's rectory, Portville. He died Sept. 3, 1972. Mr. Winne was a descendant of Peter Winne, who settled the greater Albany area in the 1650's. She was the mother of Richard H. Winne of Colonie, Peter R. Winne of Hacienda Heights,  Calif.; grandmother of Richard H. Winne II, Faith Joy Winne and Lisa M. Winne, all of Colonie; sister of Doris Ronolder of Olean; aunt to William Ronolder of Olean and Howard Ronolder of Cuba and Mary Roemer of Elma; and great-aunt to several great-nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 20, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Paul Roman officiating.

Interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

Roland G. Young
COOPERSTOWN — Roland G. Young, of Cooperstown, died at Bassett Healthcare, Sunday, May 16, 1999.

Roland was born Aug. 26, 1934, in Cooperstown, a son of George and Anna (Kobosius) Young.

He moved to Cleveland, Ohio, as a child with his father.

Roland graduated from Collinwood High School in Cleveland, after which he attended Ohio State University and Hiram College.

He married Patricia Wisokay on April 6, 1957, in Cleveland.

He was a 3M stocking distributor for industrial parking division as well as working as a projectionist for the Motion Picture Operating Union.

Roland and his family moved to Cooperstown in 1985 and purchased Smalley's Theatre which he operated for several years. He also operated RolAir Charter Service.

Roland enjoyed flying, history, classic movies and was a big fan of Big Stan Kenton Jazz.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patricia Young of Cooperstown; a son, Peter Young of Cooperstown; his stepmother, Emily Young of Euclid, Ohio; a sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Steve Tumbry of Plano,  Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Dianne Young of Euclid, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Margaret Young of Mount Vision; four nephews, Jonathon, Michael and David Tumbry of  Texas and Michael Young of Laurens; four nieces, Becky Tumbry of  Texas, Amanda and Ashley Young of Euclid, Ohio, and Ann Margaret Young of Laurens.

He was predecased by an infant son, Christopher Young, and a brother, Everett Young.

A memorial service will be Monday, May 24, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor, officiating.

Calling hours will be Sunday, May 23, 1999, from 6-8 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Coopertown at 19 Elm St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326; the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center at 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown; or the Susquehanna SPCA at 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Marjorie Winters
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mrs. Marjorie Beckingham Winters, 95, passed away Sunday, May 16, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born Oct. 8, 1903, in Frankfort, the daughter of Malcolm and Maude (Clemens) Cameron.

She married Edwin J. Beckingham in Christ Church, Herkimer, on June 9, 1928. He predeceased her in 1956. In 1974, she married Coral Winters in the Federated Church of Christ, Jordanville. He predeceased her in Zephyrhills, Fla., on May 28, 1894.

Mrs. Winters was employed by the State Technological College at Morrisville and later by the Thanksgiving Home, Cooperstown, as a cook. She was an active member of the Home Bureau, a 67-year member of Violet Rebekah Lodge of Ilion, a 40-year member of the Warren Grange No. 810 and Herkimer Pomona Grange and the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lee (Beverly) Fickbohm of Cranberry Lake; a son, Theodore Beckingham of East Springfield; a stepson, Gordon Winters of Zephyrhills, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Winters was predeceased by two brothers, James Cameron and Maynard Cameron.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

Committal services and burial will be held Saturday, May 22, 1999, in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Wilde, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, officiating.

A memorial service will be held on July 24, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the East Springfield Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Wilde, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, officiating.

Contributions in Mrs. Winters' memory may be made to the East Springfield First Responders or the Richfield Emergency Squad.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Robert H. Neisch Sr.
SIDNEY CENTER — Robert H. Neisch Sr., 77, of Sidney Center, passed away Sunday, May 16, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Aug. 21, 1921, to the late Harvey James and Ethel (Mayo) Neisch in Montgomery.

Robert married Elizabeth Peake on Jan. 23, 1942 in Franklin.

He served his country in the United States Navy from 1942-1945. Robert was aboard the USS Corry which was sunk on D-Day. Robert was employed by ECD of Bendix, Sidney, until his retirment in 1984.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 277, Sidney, the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post No. 183 in Sidney, the VFWRH Arrandale Post No. 7914 in Sidney, the Sidney Center Rod and Gun Club and the Sidney Center Historic Society.

Robert is survived by his wife Elizabeth Neisch of Sidney Center; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert H. and Veda Neisch Jr. of Phoenix and Eric and Pat Neisch of Chittenango; one daughter and son-in-law, Junal and Arnold Jump of Mount Upton; one sister, Natalie Radeker of Bend, Ore.; one stepsister, Delhia Case of Newburgh; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert is predeceased by a son, Danny Bruce Neisch, on July 25, 1994.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 20, at 10 a.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, of the United Methodist Church of Sidney Center, officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday, May 19. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center, at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sidney Center Emergency Squad or the American Heart Association, Delaware County Branch, P.O. Box 315, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Ellen E. Welch
SIDNEY — Ellen E. Welch, 85, of 23 Concord St., Sidney, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, May 15, 1999, at The Hosptial, Sidney.

Ellen was born March 7, 1914, in New Berlin, the daughter of the late Herbert and Mina Chase Stafford.

On Sept. 22, 1945, she married William E. Welch in New Berlin. He predeceased her Nov. 13, 1997.

Mrs. Welch attended Syracuse University, Syracuse. For several years, she taught piano from her home. Ellen was church organist for the Bainbridge United Methodist Church and was a longtim organist for the Sidney United Methodist Church.

She was a longtime member of the Sidney United Methodist Church, The Hospital Guild, Sidney, Sidney Garden Club and the Sidney Chapter No. 255, OES. She was a past matron of the Eastern Star and served as the grand musician of the Grand Lodge.

She is survived by two nephews, Eugene Stafford of Caledonia and Richard Stafford of Ilion; two nieces, Janet Hofacre of Tustin,  Calif., and Marileen Tewksberry of Merritt Island, Fla.; a close friend, Whit Whitaker, and his family of Sidney. She is also survived by several great and great-great nieces and nephews. She is survived by her cousin, Margorie Rose of Venice, Fla.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20, from the Sidney United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Masland, pastor, will officiate. Burial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Andrew's Cemetery, New Berlin.

Friends are invited to call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The Sidney Eastern Stars will conduct services at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney United Methodist Church or to The Hospital Foundation, Sidney.

Luther Otis Card Sr.
MORRIS — Luther Otis Card Sr., 81, of Morris, died at The Meadows in Middlefield on May 16, 1999.

He was born Sept. 3, 1917, in Morris, the son of Russell W. and Hazel Beth (Holbrook) Card.

He was married to Ruth Hackenburg in Auburn. She died in March of 1988.

He was a retired foreman for the New York State Department of Transportation and had formerly worked at the Raymend Corp. and the Stewart Ice Co.

He was a charter member of the Morris Emergency Squad and had served as a first aid instructor for many years. He was also a member of the Otsego County Peace Officers Association as well as the West Oneonta Baptist Church and also attended the Morris Baptist Church.

Luther is survived by a daughter, Patricia Sinclair, and her husband, Donald, of Dunnellon, Fla.; three sons, Darwin Card, and his wife, Sally, of Pittsfield, Russell W. Card, and his wife, Debra, of Morris and Luther O. Card Jr., and his wife, Janet, of Oneonta; two brothers, Gerald Card and his wife, Gertrude, of West Oneonta and Garieth Card of Gilbertsville; a sister, Joyce Ploutz of Otego; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Hilda Stilwell.

Funeral services will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris on Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. J. Mark Norlund officiating.

Committal services and burial will follow in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Those who wish, may donate to the Morris Emergency Squad in his memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
