RICHARD W. PHILLIPS

Richard W. Phillips, 79, of Cherry Street, Lake Placid, NY, died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. He was born in Potsdam, NY on July 17, 1924, the son of Glenn A. and Mary Jane (Crouder) Phillips.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife of fifty-one years: Charlyne "Cheri" (Campbell) Phillips; two sons: Richard R. Phillips and his wife Pat of Cheshire, MA, and Thomas R. Phillips and his wife Judy of Bartlett Carry, Tupper Lake, NY; a daughter: Kristol Marialyce Phillips and her companion Donald DeMacy of Wilmington, NY; one brother: Glenn Phillips of Massena, NY; two sisters: Eleanor Waite of Potsdam and Martha Hoff of Denver, CO; a sister-in-law: Irene Phillips of Dover, NH; a granddaughter: Dove Phillips / Infantino and her husband Dan of rouses Point, NY, and a very special friend: Holly Stretch of Lake Placid.

He was predeceased by his parents, one brother: Paul Phillips and one sister: Alice Kirby.

At his request, there are no calling hours. Follow cremation, a Memorial Service will be held at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made to the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service in his memory. The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements.

LORETTA BRIGGS

Loretta Briggs, age 87, of Cold Brook Road, Bloomingdale, died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the Adirondack Medical Center at Saranac Lake.

Born April 25, 1916 in Crogan, NY, she was the daughter of Peter and Lola (Wolf) Yousey.

She is survived by her brother: Kenneth Yousey of Bloomingdale and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband: Leland Briggs in 1989 in Venice, Florida; her brothers: Robert Yousey, Leroy "Ted" Yousey, James Yousey and Donald Yousey; her sisters: Althea Belknap and Virginia Nof sier.

There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday at 2pm at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home with Sister Janet Peters officiating.

Friends wishing to remember Mrs. Briggs may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.

DOROTHY M. HOYT

Dorothy M. Hoyt, 77, of Forest Home Road, Lake Clear, NY, died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at her home with her family at her side.

Born in Saranac Lake on May 25, 1926, she was the daughter of Myron and Ethel (Walsh) Richardson. She married Allen Hoyt on April 2, 1945 at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake.

She is survived by her husband, Allen, of 58 years; her five daughters: Donna Magee and Dennis Mullen of Lake Clear, Susan Phelan and her husband Thomas of Lake Clear, Holly Strack and her husband Eugene of Lake Clear, Lynn Hoyt and Jeff Armer of Gansevoort, NY, Tammy McCormick and her husband Bernard of Lake Clear, NY, 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two sisters: Charlotte Spaulding and Imogene Lavigne.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A Bible Vigil Service will take place Thursday at 8:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:15am on Friday at St. John's Church in Lake Clear with Reverend Kevin McEwan officiating.

Friends wishing to remember Dorothy may make memorial contributions to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad or High Peaks Hospice in care of the funeral home.

BARBARA K. SOCHIA

Barbara K. Sochia, age 65, of 8 Dorms Road Ext., Scotia, NY, died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at her home.

Born in Saranac Lake, NY on November 7, 1938, she was the daughter of Robert and Erma (Grindell) Kimpton. she married Everett Sochia on June 16, 1962 at St. John's Church in Lake Clear, NY. He predeceased her on March 16, 1994.

She is survived by her father: Robert "Joe" Kimpton of Scotia; three daughters and sons-in-law: Janet and Mark Collier of Vermontville, Carol and Mark Taussig of Scotia, and Sandra and David Quickenton of Galway; grandchildren: Jonathan Collier, Erica and Emma Taussig, and Jordan and Avery Quickenton; her beloved friend: Ray Davis of Burnt Hills; her sister and brother-in-law: LeEsta "Tessie" and Art Smith of Charlton; her brother and sister-in-law: Tom and Pat Kimpton of Saranac Lake, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Everett on March 16, 1994. The were married on June 16, 1962 at St. John's Church in Lake Clear.

A Memorial Celebration of Barbara's life will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 185 Swaggertown Road, Scotia, NY (399-8782) on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 2pm. A second celebration will take place at the Adirondack Presbyterian Church at Lake Clear in the spring on a date and time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Schenectady Community Hospice, 1411 Union, Schenectady, NY or High Peaks Community Hospice in Saranac Lake, or Tri-Lakes Humane Society. Local funeral arrangements are with the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake, NY.

RETA ELIZABETH WELLS

Reta Elizabeth Wells, 80, of 124 Underwood Road, Tupper Lake, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at the St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, NY. Born on March 1, 1923 in Piercefield, NY, she was the daughter of Henry and Sofrona Ayotte (Manor).

On February 15, 1941, she married Kenneth P. Wells at the Holy Name Church.

She is survived by 11 children: Barbara Duprat of Tupper Lake, NY, Mr. and Mrs. Jim (Linda) Herman of Victor, NY, Carolyn Perkins of Cary, IL, Mr. and Mrs. John (Suzanne) McCarthy of Malone, NY, Mr. and Mrs. Ron (Nancy) Miller of Otter Lake, NY, Katherine Wells of Penfield, NY, Kenneth Wells of Ballona, NY, Steven Wells of Pittsford, NY, Mr. and Mrs. Michael (Laura) Wells of Ballston Spa, NY, Gail Poirier of Tupper Lake, NY, and Jeff Wells of Tupper Lake, NY; and 26 grandchildren: Pamela, Rebecca, David, Joy, Michael, Lisa, James, Andrea, Richard, Patrice, Patrick, David, Christine, Joseph, Erin, Brian, Kevin, Nicholas, Kenny, Michelle, Melissa, Robbie, Kayla, Matthew, Sarah, Lindsey; 21 great-grandchildren: Ashley, Zachary, Christopher, Brad, Curt, Shawn, Jacob, Claire, Ryan, Berlyn, Tyler, Katie, Ricky, Kristen, Robert, Joseph, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Stephanie, Tesa and Justin; 2 sisters: Mr. and Mrs. Gerald (Gertrude) Black of Piercefield, NY, Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Joanne) Jackson; one brother: Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Shirley) Ayotte; one brother-in-law: Perry Wells. She was predeceased by her husband: Kenneth Wells; two sisters: Irene Campbell and Florence LaFave; two brothers: Ronald Ayotte and Fred Ayotte; one infant brother and infant sister.

Calling hours will be at the Richer Funeral Home on Friday, January 16, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9pm.

Church Services will be on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 11am at Holy Name Church. Burial will be held in May at Holy Name Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choosing.

BARBARA B. MAINZER

Barbara B. Mainzer of Jay, NY, died peacefully in the Nursing Facility of Champlain Valley Physician's Hospital in Plattsburgh, NY on January 15, 2004 at the age of 76.

She was born on November 14, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA to William and Helen (Walker) Bauer.

She married Thomas R. Mainzer on July 2, 1955 in Ardmore, PA.

She is survived by her husband and four children: Thomas of Syracuse, NY, Susan Mitchell of Richmond, VA, Nancy of Somerset, NJ, and Gary of Harrisburg, PA. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Thomas III of Easton, Pa, Michael and Erin of Syracuse, Brenna, Shelley and Christina of Richmond.

Friends may call at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid on Sunday, January 18, 2004 at 11am at the St. Eustace Episcopal Church in Lake Placid. Reverend Judson Pealer, Rector, will officiate. Cremation will follow and burial will take place at the Jay Central Cemetery at a later date.

ANNE TRACHTENBURG

An Upper Jay woman, critically injured in a one-car crash in Wilmington on Sunday, has died of her injuries.

49 year-old Anne Trachtenburg suffered severe head trauma when her 2002 Volvo slid off a snowy Springfield Road and crashed into a tree.

She was first taken to AMC-Saranac Lake but later transferred to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, where she died on Monday afternoon.

According to a report in the Plattsburgh Press-Republican, Trachtenburg had worked as a fundraising consultant for several environmental organizations – the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks, Open Space Institute and Wildlife Conservation Society, among others.

She also worked for the Adirondack Council for eight years as director of development and membership.

Additionally, Trachtenburg had been involved in many other organizations – including High Peaks Hospice and the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks.

SISTER HELEN RICE

Sister Helen Rice, R.S.M. of St. Margaret's Convent, Lake Placid, NY, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 204 at the Uihlein Mercy Center, Lake Placid.

Sr. was born in Long Lake, NY on April 13, 1917, the daughter of Arthur and Elizabeth (Clement) Rice.

Sister entered St. Margaret's Convent in Lake Placid in 1997 and was a resident of Uihlein Mercy Center since June 2000.

She is survived by one sister: Mrs. Betty Sylvester of Long Lake; and two nieces: Helen Kentile and her husband Robert of Long Lake and Mary Beth Harris and her husband Terry of Hinesburgh, VT.

Friends may call Thursday, January 22, from 2-4 and 7-9pm at St. Margaret's Convent at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 23, at 12 noon at the Reiss Memorial Chapel at Uihlein Mercy Center. Reverend Patrick O' Reilly will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be at the Long Lake Cemetery at 2pm on Saturday, January 24, 2004. The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements.

ANNE L. HUTTLINGER

Anne L. Huttlinger passed away on January 19, 2004 at the Lake Placid residence that had been her home for 51 years.

Mrs. Huttlinger was born in Waterbury, VT, the daughter of Agnes McGrath Lewis and Henry Lewis.

She married John E. (Jerry) Huttlinger on October 7, 1950 at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid.

In addition to her husband of 53 years, Mrs. Huttlinger is survived by two sons: John B. Huttlinger, Jr. of Lake Placid and James M. Huttlinger of Baltimore, MD; and by two daughters: Retta Huttlinger of Winooski, VT and Tierney Beck of Bennington, VT. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Katie and Lauren Beck of Bennington, VT, and John B. Huttlinger III of Lake Placid, NY.

Calling hours will be held at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid on Thursday, January 22, from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 23, and will be celebrated by St. Agnes Church Pastor Reverend J. Michael Gaffney and concelebrated by Reverend Philip T. Allen of Holy Name Church in Ausable Forks.

The family suggests friends wishing to remember Anne make donations in her memory to High Peaks Hospice, P.O. Box 840, Saranac Lake, NY 12983-0840 or Carmelite Monastery, 139 DePuyster Avenue, Beacon, NY 12508-3540.

KATHRYN CALLAGHAN CUMMINGS

Kathryn Callaghan Cummings, 83, of Forest Home Road, died Tuesday, January 20, in Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, where she had been for three weeks.

She was born December 27, 1920 in Lake Clear, the daughter of Matthew and Florence Buchanan Otis. She married George Vincent Callaghan on September 30, 1940 in Lake Clear. He died April 28, 1969. She married Leo Cummings February 12, 1983 in Lake Clear. He died April 12, 2002.

She is survived by five sons: Harold Callaghan and Robert Callaghan both of Lake Clear, Stephen Callaghan of Port Leyden, Bryan Callaghan of Albany and James Callaghan of Tupper Lake; two daughters: Mrs. Dan (Anita) Boliver of Clovis, New Mexico and Mrs. Peter (Ruth) Dreschler of Scotia, NY; 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister: Ruth Norton of Englewood, Florida. One brother: Harold Otis and three sisters: Mildred Otis, Marie Heath and Madeline Jacques predeceased her.

Friends may call at the Cummings home on the Forest Home Road in Lake Clear from 2pm to 7pm on Friday. The Funeral will be held at 10am on Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Lake Clear with Father Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Cremation will be in Brookside Cemetery, Watertown and burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Lake Clear.

Donations may be made to High Peaks Hospice, Saranac Lake, or to the Patient Activity Fund at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid.

DOROTHY A. MCARTHUR

Dorothy A. McArthur, 82, of River Street, Lake Placid, NY, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

She was born in Chateaugay, NY on March 20, 1921, the daughter of John and Eva LaPiere. She was the widow of James P. McArthur who died October 26, 2001.

Dorothy is survived by a sister: Olive  Jones of Ohio, and several nieces and nephews: Gerald Sherman of West Chazy, Ralph Sherman of Morrisonville, Ronald Sherman of New Hampshire, Irene Megliore of Mt. Morris, Margaret Schnidl of Mt. Morris and Dorothy Owens of Morrisonville.

Friends may call Friday, January 23, from 5-8pm at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A Funeral Service will follow at the Funeral Home at 8pm. Reverend Patrick O'Reilly will officiate. Burial will be in North Elba Cemetery in May.

ROBERT E. RYAN

Robert E. Ryan "Poker", age 87, of 175 Lake Street, Saranac Lake, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at Meadow Brook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh, NY.

Born in Franklin Falls, NY on May 4, 1916, he was the son of William and Mary (Keese) Ryan.

Mr. Ryan married Catherine O'Leary on January 16, 1951 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She predeceased him in 1959.

He is survived by two sons: David and Danny Ryan, both of Saranac Lake, NY; two daughters: Theresa Rottner of Saratoga Springs, NY and Mary Ann Stevens of Hudson Falls, NY; two brothers: Ray Ryan of Hollywood, FL, and Francis Ryan of Storrs, CT; one sister: Theresa Murray of Rochester, NY and a granddaughter: Andrea Ryan of Saranac Lake, NY. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Bernard, Paul, John and Joseph Ryan.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Sunday. A Bible Vigil Service will take place on Sunday at 7:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:15am on Monday at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake with Reverend Dan Callahan officiating. Burial will be at St. Paul's Cemetery in Bloomingdale in May.

ROY O. JOHNSON

Roy O. Johnson, 79, of 1 Main Street, passed away at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake on January 25, 2004. He was born in Bronx, NY on December 17, 1924, the son of Oscar and Esther (Johansson) Johnson.

Roy is survived by his wife Mildred (Peterson)  Johnson of Lake Placid; a daughter: Loraine Flandreau and her husband Ted of Danbury, CT; two sons: Kenneth  Johnson and his wife Tracey of Lake Placid, and Keith  Johnson and his wife Deborah of Greeley, CO. He is also survived by two stepbrothers: Walter Sorensen of Denton, TX and Ed Sorensen of Charleston, SC. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Nicole, Kristen, Breckin, Kolton, Haley, Kara and Lars  Johnson and Ted and Grace Flandreau. A daughter: Ruthann Johnson, and a brother: Donald  Johnson died earlier.

Friends may call at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid on Wednesday, January 28, from 7-9pm. A Masonic Service will be held Wednesday at 8:30pm. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 29, at 11am at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity at St. Luke's Church in Saranac Lake. Pastor John Matern will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Memorial Park in Kew Gardens, NY on Friday, January 30, at 2pm.

DOROTHY THERESA CORNEAU

Dorothy Theresa Corneau, 91, of Don Smiths Apartments, Tupper Lake, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter in Saranac Lake on Thursday, January 22, 2004, with care from High Peaks Hospice.

She was born January 11, 1913, in Tupper Lake, the daughter of Frank and Rose (Ladue) LaBarge.

On May 17, 1937, she married Francis Corneau, who predeceased her on May 27, 1975.

She is survived by two sons: Thomas and his wife Sharon of Madrid, NY, Robert of Abilene, TX; two daughters: June and her husband Dick Sarazen of Hudson Falls, and Susan and her husband Tom Clement. She has one surviving sister: Theresa LaRocque of Green, NY; eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband; one son: John on May 21, 2004; three brothers: Francis LaBarge, Harold (Joe) LaBarge, and Harry LaBarge; six sisters: Mildred Oldfield, Lillian David, Antoinette Brown, Clara Cotton, Ruth Smith, and Lorraine (Corrinne) Corneau.

Calling hours were held Sunday at the Richer Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, January 26, at 11am at St. Alphonsus Church.

Donations in Mrs. Corneau's memory may be made to High Peaks Hospice or North Country Home Services of Tupper Lake.

GEORGE J. MEYER

George J. Meyer died December 29, 2003 at the age of 85 after a short illness in Naples, FL. George was the Beloved Husband of the late Nancy Archie Meyer. He is survived by his son: Michael of Los Angeles, CA; his daughter: Kathleen of Naples, FL; his grandson: Stephen LoTempio of Oceanside, CA; his granddaughter: Maria LoTempio of Long Beach, CA; and four great-grandchildren: Guisseppe, Stephen, Isabella and Stephana LoTempio. He is also survived by Nancy's two daughters: Katherine Archie of Syosset, NY and Jeanne Archie and her two daughters: McKenzie and Kaela Dickerson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

A Memorial Service is planned for this summer at a time and place to be announced. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory.
