Stuart L. Cowen
HAMILTON — Stuart L. Cowen, 74, of Frog Park Road, passed away Friday, May 21, 1999, at Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton.

He was born July 23, 1924, in Waterville, the son of the late Norman and Jeanette Dugan Cowen. He was educated in Waterville schools.

In Oriskany Falls, he married Rose Carney. She passed away in 1994.

For many years, Mr. Cowen was a self-employed dairy farmer, retiring in 1985. He was a U.S. Marine during World War II and was wounded during the Battle of Tawara, after which he received the Purple Heart. He was a former member of the Clifford J. Fulmer American Legion Post No. 92, Sangerfield.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Francis and Julee Cowen of Bainbridge; a sister, Clementine Burkert of Bouckville; five brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Dorothy Cowen of Waterville, Clement and Pat Cowen of Wilmington, Del., Charles and Audrey Cowen of Stockwell, Norman and Margaret Cowen of Chicago, Ill., and Francis and Elaine Cowen of Stockwell; three grandchildren, Seth Francis, Brett Charles and Ethan Lee Cowen, all of Bainbridge; his in-laws, Alice Snow of Brookfield, Lee and Elma Carney of Oriskany Falls, Bob and Lillian Drumm of Ilion, Katherine Carney of Bouckville and Joe Carney of Florida; and many nieces, nephews and friends in the holstein business, as well as three special friends, Gary, Sue and J.R.

He was predeceased by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Patricia Cowen and Emily and Oscar Henrickson; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Frances Cowen; and a brother-in-law, Elmer Burkert.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Kloster-Northrop and Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville, with the Rev. Richard J. Kapral officiating.

Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Oriskany Falls.

Calling hours are Sunday from noon-2 p.m. prior to the service.

Carmine J. Marino
ONEONTA — Carmine J. Marino, 74, of Oneonta, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, as a result of an automobile accident.
He was born Jan. 16, 1925, in Futani, Italy, the son of Michael and Grazia (Zaino) Marino.

He married Betty Miller, who died Feb. 21, 1997.

Carmine was a World War II veteran having served with the United States Navy where he received a purple heart.

Carmine worked for the New York City Transit Authority as an engine repairman. He retired Feb. 1, 1990.

He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, and also a member of the Oneonta VFW. Carmine was also a volunteer at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary A. and James Frankson of Stony Creek and Jean and Al Maio of Franklin Square; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph and Robin Marino of Richmond Hills, Jerry Marino of Woodhaven and Michael Marino of Oneonta; 10 grandchildren, James Frankson Jr., Carmine Frankson, Kimberly Frankson, Nikki Frankson, Jennie Frankson, Anthony Maio, Michael Maio, Jeannie Maio, Margaret Gina and Sean Gina; six great-grandchildren, Marie Frankson, William Frankson, Carmine Frankson Jr., Chelsie Whitehead, Kasey Burns and Ashleigh Gina; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Carmine was predeceased by two brothers, Michael and Mario Marino.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, May 24, 1999, at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco officiating.

Burial will be Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at 1 p.m. at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Monday, May 24, 1999, from noon until service time for those who wish to call.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the A.O. Fox Memorial Hosptial, c/o of Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, 1 Norton Ave., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, in loving memory of Carmine J. Marino.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Rufus J. Thayer
SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Rufus J. Thayer, 81, of Springfield Center, died Friday, May 21, 1999 at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born April 8, 1918 in Springfield Center, a son of Grover C. and Martha (Whipple) Thayer.

Raised on the family dairy farm, Rufus graduated from Springfield Center High School in 1935. Following graduation he continued a family tradtion by joining his father and brother in business, thus becoming the third generation to operate Lakeside Farm. During the 1980's, the farming operation, which had been established in the late 1800's by his grandfather, William J. Thayer, was gradually phased out.

Rufus was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Springfield and he especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. In 1987 he established the Thayer Family Scholarship Trust at Cooperstown Central School. In 1993, Rufus was honored by the Otsego County Conservation Association as Conservationist of the Year.

He is survived by several cousins, Dr. Janice M. Whipple, Elsie W. Schiffner and Jessie Amanda Flax, all of the Capital District and William H. Reed of Port Orange, Fla.

Rufus was predeceased by his brother, William O. Thayer on Oct. 8, 1984.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family, on Monday, May 24, 1999 at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Persis P. Williams, pastor of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Springfield Center, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Springfield Center Cemetery.

Friends may call at their convenience after 2 p.m., Sunday, May 23 at the funeral home in Cooperstown. Rufus' family will be in attendance from 2-4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of me"morial donations may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church or Springfield Cemetery Association, both at Springfield Center, N.Y. 13460.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

William G. Stalter
DELHI — William G. Stalter, of Delhi and Cedar Key, Fla., died Sunday, May 16, at his home in Cedar Key. He was 68.

He was born Dec. 9, 1930, in Sloatsburg to Edith and Kenneth Stalter Sr.

He married Lorraine Ann Judson in Hollis on Aug. 6, 1960.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Hartwick College and a masters of history from SUNY Albany. He began his career at Suffern High School teaching English from 1960-1966. He was a professor of English at SUNY Delhi from 1969 to January 1986 when he retired.

He served as an ordained deacon in the Roman Catholic Church and was a member of St. Peter's Church in Delhi for many years, as well as a member of the Christ Church in Cedar Key.

Mr. Stalter was a founding member of the Cedar Key Poets Group and took great pleasure in publishing these authors through his "Spiritsail Press." His own poetry has appeared in "Poem," "Artisan," "Lilluput Review," "The Climbing Art," "Gestalten" and "The Beloit Poetry Journal." Besides writing, he enjoyed painting, gardening, hiking, boat building and spending time with his family.

Mr. Stalter is survived by his wife, Lorrie; his sons, Thomas Stalter of Albany and Michael Stalter of Greenwich; his daughter, Susan Ackerly of Delhi; his brothers, Kenneth Stalter Jr. of Franklin and James Stalter of Sloatsburg; his sister, Barbara Smith of Walden; his grandchildren, Mikella Ackerly and Judson, Hayden and Erik Stalter; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Mass will be held at St. Peter's Church in Delhi, Friday, May 28, at 11 a.m. with Father Edward Ryan celebrating.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Delhi or the American Heart Association.

Marie V. Barbieri
JEFFERSON — Marie V. Barbieri, 68, died unexpectedly May 19, 1999, in Hackensack, N.J.

She was born Aug. 6, 1930, in Manhattan, the daughter of Salvatore and Angelina (Valentino) Jermino.

She married Albert Barbieri on Sept. 26, 1953, in Manhattan. He died Sept. 20, 1985.

Mrs. Barbieri was employed as a secretary at the Charlotte Valley Central School from 1972 until her retirement in 1995.

She was a graduate of  Washington Irving High School in New York City.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church of Stamford.

She is survived by one son, Nicholas Barbieri of Westminster, Md.; one daughter, Sally Ann McCarty of Garfield, N.J.; two brothers, Michael Jermino of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and John Jermino of Staten Island; two sisters, Agnes Ansaldi and Rose Ann Venditte, both of Staten Island; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Jermino.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, 1999, with the Rev. Joseph Cebula, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the Barbieri Cemetery, Harpersfield.

Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, from 7-9 p.m. Monday when the family will be in attendance.

Nancy L. Gaeta
WEST ISLIP — Nancy L. Gaeta, 56, of West Islip, died May 19, 1999. She was the daughter of Evelyn (Williamson) and Clyde Rogers.

She was the beloved wife of Bill, loving mother Vito "Tony," Gino and Gina Bruno, the fond sister of Barbara Firsching and cherished grandmother of Angelo.

A religious service will be held on Sunday at 8 p.m. at the Moloney's Bohemia Funeral Home, 1320 Lakeland Ave., Bohemia, with visiting hours from 1-3 and 7-9 p.m. that day.

Burial will take place Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Harpersfield Cemetery with the Rev. Walter Hillis officiating.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Local arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Sierra Sky Moriarty Greene
JEFFERSON — Sierra Sky Moriarty Greene died peacefully on May 20, 1999, at Albany Medical Center.

She was born on May 15, 1999.

She is survived by her birth mother, Rita Green of Hobart; and by her adoptive mother, Meagan Moriarty of  Jefferson, both of whom were with her at the time of her death.

She is also survived by her grandparents, Guy Truesdell and Kathleen Lavigne of  Jefferson and Joseph Moriarty of Montclair, N.J.

Friends of the family and relatives are invited to a service, which will be held at the West  Jefferson Cemetery in  Jefferson on Sunday, May 23, at 2 p.m.

Domenick DiScala
ONEONTA — Dom DiScala died peacefully early Saturday morning, May 22, 1999, after a brief illness at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sept. 9, 1924. Dom was a World War II veteran and independent businessman before moving to West Oneonta in 1962.

A longtime area real estate broker and appraiser, Dom was a member of the Magistrates Association and served as an Otsego County legislator, representative of the 3rd District for 12 years.

Dom also belonged to the West Laurens Grange and the West End Baptist Church.

Dom is survived by his wife, Mary; a sister, Mary D'Angelo; three children; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Friends and neighbors are invited to attend a funeral service by Pastor Keith Van Dewerker, Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at 3 p.m. at the West End Baptist Church on Winney Hill Road.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, those who are so inclined may offer contributions to the West End Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Merlyn M. Allen
DELHI — Merlyn M. Allen, 69, a Delaware County native and former Delhi resident died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton.

He was born Aug. 8, 1929, in Hancock, the son of Millard E. and Sadie L. (Jacobs) Allen.

He grew up on the farm, which his family operated on Elk Creek, Delhi, and received his education at Delaware Academy.

Merlyn never married and had been a resident of Binghamton for the past 50 years.

Surviving are two sisters, Shirley Frandsen and Alice MacIntyre, both of Delhi; a brother, Jack D. Allen of Florence, S.C.; one aunt and one uncle; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to call this evening, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance, from 7 to 8 p.m., and funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 25. The Rev. Mitchell Bush of Walton will officiate and burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Elizabeth (Beta) Vitek Bukovsan
SIDNEY — Elizabeth (Beta) Vitek Bukovsan, 99, of Sidney, died Saturday morning, May 22, 1999, at The Skilled Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Oct. 31, 1899, in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. The daughter of Stefan and Anna Vitek.

Elizabeth came to the United States and settled in Chicago in 1922. She married John Bukovcan in 1924. He died in 1933. She moved to Oneonta in 1989, and to The Skilled Nursing Care Facility in 1992.

Elizabeth is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William and Laura Bukovsan of Otego; one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and William Hudnut of Spartanburg, S.C.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Dan and Mary Hudnut of Macedon, Joanne and Richard Mearns of Chicago, Ill. , Nancy and Tim Gergan of Spartanburg, S.C., William Hunter and Rebecca Burnhard Bukovsan of Piedmont,  Calif., and James Richard Bukovsan of Otego; and two great-grandchildren, Lisa Hudnut stationed in Norfolk, Va. and Lynn Hudnut of Macedon.

She was predeceased by one son, John Bukovsan in 1989.

At the request of Elizabeth she was cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
