Elsie Louise Coffyn
NEW BERLIN — Elsie Louise Coffyn, 77, died Friday, June 4, 1999, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home.

She was born Sept. 23, 1921, in New Lisbon, the daughter of Albert D. Joy and Clara L. Martin Joy.

She married Harold W. Card. He died in 1979.

She spent her childhood in New Lisbon. She worked at Simmons/GLA in Norwich for many years. Since retirement she has been a senior companion at Broome Developmental Disabilities Service Office in New Berlin.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Elsie is survived by her son, Gary Coffyn of New Berlin; daughters, Dorothy Coffyn of Syracuse, Betty (Joseph) Masotto of Auburn and Diane (Stephen) Riddell of Henderson Harbor; sisters, Emma Halter of Jacksonville, Fla. and Melissa (Raymond) Lester of Oneonta; sister-in-law, Lois Joy of New Berlin; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin today at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Beverly Butler, pastor of the United Methodist Church in New Berlin, officiating. Interment will be at the All Saints Memorial Chapel in Morris.

Calling hours were held at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin on Sunday, June 6, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Arrangements are with the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Dorothy W. Miller
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Dorothy W. Miller, 81, of Pioneer Street in Cooperstown died late Friday afternoon, June 4, 1999, at her home.

She was born on Dec. 9, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pa., a daughter of William and Clara (Feinstein) Wiener.

She married William Miller in 1959, in Hawaii. Mr. Miller died in 1975.

Mrs. Miller was raised in Philadelphia and later moved to New York City, where she graduated from high school. She then pursued her career in nursing and graduated from the Hahnemann Hospital Nursing School in Philadelphia. As a registered nurse, she spent most of her career as a surgical nurse in operating rooms, first at Columbia Presbyterian and then at Memorial Sloan Kettering, both in Manhattan. Her last position before retiring was managing the office of Dr. John Lewis, a head and neck specialist in Manhattan.

Following their marriage in 1959, Mr. and Mrs. Miller moved to Palm Springs,  Calif., and then to El Cajon. They later moved to the suburbs of Philadelphia, returned to the West Coast and approximately eight years ago, Mrs. Miller settled in Cooperstown.

She was of the Jewish faith and loved animals.

Mrs. Miller is survived by two sisters, Nell Reback and Jean Freed; and several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Harriet Zuckerman of Riverside Drive in New York City.

A private service of committal and burial will be held in the Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 state Highway 28, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Thurza Jane Miller
ONEONTA — Thurza Jane Miller, 78, of Oneonta died early Saturday, June 5, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare of Schoharie County.

She was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Oneonta, the daughter of Howard and Violet Ackart.

She was married to Luther E. Miller on Dec. 30, 1951, in Oneonta and resided in Oneonta her whole life. Mr. Miller died in 1988.

Thurza owned and operated her own beauty shop for 25 years. She was a member and three-time past Matron of the Martha Chapter of the Eastern Star. She was a volunteer at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for 15 years. More recently, she was employed by Price Chopper of Oneonta.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta and in her younger years was a very active participant in many church functions.

Mrs. Miller was predeceased by her son, the Rev. Howard E. Miller in 1994, and her husband, Luther E. Miller in 1988.

Mrs. Miller is survived by her daughter, Diana M. DuBois, and son-in-law, Rondald P. DuBois; also surviving are two granddaughters, Tamara DuBois and Lisa DuBois; and a great-granddaughter, Brianna.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Marie King, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home. The family will be receiving friends immediately following services at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Robert H. Nissen
DAVENPORT CENTER — Robert H. Nissen, 81, of Davenport Center died Sunday morning, June 6, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born July 31, 1917, in Davenport, town of Kortright, the son of Walter and Christine (Sorensen) Nissen.

He married Betty Fink.

Robert graduated from Davenport High School in 1935. He had retired after many years from Agway in Stamford as a refrigerator technician.

He was a member of the Danish Brotherhood.

Robert is survived by his wife, Betty, of Davenport Center; three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Herman Riese of Davenport Center; Roberta Ann Nissen and Dennis Becker of Bennington, Vt. and Mary and Nicholas Demos of Waterford; five grandchildren, Herman and Cali Riese, Andrew Becker, Stephen and Seth Demos; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, Mr. Carl (Margaret) Kuehnel and Mrs. Paul (Eleanor) Lauer and two brothers, John and Ralph Nissen.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at 1:30 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta with the Rev. Henry Gerken, pastor of the West Davenport Freewill Baptist Church of West Davenport, officiating. Burial will be in the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 9.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the East Meredith Fire Department or to the Stamford Baptist Church Bus Fund in loving memory of Robert H. Nissen.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Isabelle Layton Powers
JEFFERSON — Isabelle Layton Powers, 79, of 10817 S.E. 51st Ave., Belleview, Fla. and formerly of  Jefferson died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at her residence.

She was born June 27, 1919, in New York City, the daughter of Winburn and Josephine (Robinson) Layton.

She was married to George F. Powers, who died on Nov. 24, 1993.

Isabelle graduated from Stamford Seminary in 1937. She was a registered nurse. She lived in Syracuse, Florida and had a  Jefferson connection through the Layton family.

There are no known survivors.

Graveside committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at the Layton family plot in the Evergreen Cemetery at  Jefferson with the Rev. Charles Gockel, pastor of the  Jefferson United Methodist Church, officiating.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Isabelle's memory to the American Heart Association, Delaware County Branch, P.O. Box 315, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Elsie M. Smith
CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Elsie M. Smith, 96, passed away Saturday, June 5, 1999, at The Meadows, where she had resided for the past 13 years.

She was born Aug. 31, 1902, in Buel, town of Canajoharie, the daughter of Frederick and Grace (Moore) Porath.

Mrs. Smith worked as an L.P.N. at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown and at the Masonic Home in Utica for 30 years until retiring in 1972.

Her family wishes to extend a sincere thanks to the staff at The Meadows for the wonderful care and concern they have given her for the past 13 years.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Evelyn M. Hull of Cherry Valley; two sisters, Charlotte Flint of Cooperstown and Bertha Baldwin of Cherry Valley; two brothers, Donald Porath of Middlefield and Robert Porath of Cherry Valley; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Richard F. Smith, a son-in-law, James F. Hull, a grandson, James R. Hull, two brothers, Clarence Porath and Frederick Porath, and her parents.

A memorial funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley with Mr. Lyman Johsnon, officiating. Burial will follow in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

There will be no public calling hours.

Contributions in Mrs. Smith's memory may be made to the Activity Fund at The Meadows, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Lois Schaeffer
COOPERSTOWN — This world lost one of its brighter souls on Saturday, June 5, 1999, when Mrs. Lois Schaeffer, 83, died at Fox Hospital Nursing Home in Oneonta.

Formerly of Long Island, Mrs. Schaeffer had lived in Cooperstown since the loss of her beloved husband, Richard, in 1985.

Mrs. Schaeffer was born Lois Mildred Corwin on Long Island on July 22, 1915. Her parents were Daniel and Edna Corwin of Riverhead.

She spent her youth in Valley Stream, where she graduated from Central High School in 1931. She then attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and the Art Students' League in Manhattan, where she studied painting and sculpture.

She was married to Richard D. Schaeffer of New York City in September 1941, and they remained happily married until his death.

After successfully raising her four children, Lois returned to her education, earning her B.A. in 1973, and an M.A. in foreign languages in 1975, both from the State University at Stony Brook. Lois' special fields were French and Italian language and culture. She never abandoned her lifelong interest in oil painting, drawing and sculpture. She was also an avid and skillful gardener.

Lois will be remembered for her ready, cheerful smile and unceasingly positive outlook on life. She tried to find something good in everyone, no matter the circumstances. She had a penetrating intelligence and a great sense of humor.

Her use of language was always precise, and her children have all inherited her love of fine music, literature and laughter. While outwardly docile and polite, Lois had a powerful will and an unconventional outlook on life. Even her own children sometimes underestimated her ability to adapt to and endure the greatest of losses.

Lois was predeceased by her parents, and her brother, Daniel.

Lois is survived by her children, Richard of Sparta, Mo., Peter of Brooklyn, William of Fly Creek and Lisa Blais of Rumford, R.I.; as well as her dearly loved nephews, David, Chia, Andre, and Michael (of Fly Creek); and nieces, Molly, Kate, and Lucy Schaefer (of Fly Creek). She also leaves behind her lifelong friend, Mrs. Gretchen Olson of Bellmore; and her loving friend, Elma Mitchell of Oneonta.

Service will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St., Cooperstown, with the Rev. Eileen Kellogg-Cornwell, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating. Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. before the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Activities Department of Fox Hospital Nursing Home, 1 Norton Ave., Oneonta, or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are with the Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Bernice Patton
PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Bernice Edgar Patton, 88, died Saturday afternoon, June 5, 1999, at the Reformed Presbyterian Home in Pittsburgh, Pa.

She was born on Nov. 27, 1910, in Hopkinton, Iowa, the daughter of J.C. and Mary (Barr) Edgar.

She married Andrew J. Patton on April 10, 1936, in Hopkinton, Iowa.

Mrs. Patton spent her early years in both Anadarko, Okla., and Hopkinton, Iowa. She graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1928, and Lenox College in 1930. She taught school in Elkport, Iowa, and after her marriage lived on a farm in Hopkinton. During World War II they moved to Tampa, Fla., where her husband worked in a shipyard building landing craft for the Normandy invasion. They returned to Iowa in 1945, where she taught kindergarten in Maynard, Iowa, for two years, and first grade in Gladbrook, Iowa, from 1948-1961.

Mrs. Patton taught first grade in Vero Beach, Fla., from 1961 until her retirement in 1975. She loved teaching her students to read.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and was a member of the charter graduating class of the University of South Florida in Tampa. She was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Walton, N.Y. where she and her husband lived for many summers.

Besides her parents, Bernice was predeceased by her husband, Andrew; a brother, Bobby; and a sister, Loretta Joseph.

Mrs. Patton is survived by her brother, Albert C. Edgar of  Oklahoma City and his wife, Clarine. She is survived by her children, Jackie Spear and son-in-law, Wendell, and Loretta Hulbert and son-in-law, Robert, all of Walton; six grandchildren, Kathy S. Gray of Fort Collins,  Colo., Suzanne S. Kiehl of Glen Mills, Pa., Linda S. Neice of Montgomery, Ala., James Hulbert of Charlotte, N.C., Jean H. Blowers of Montgomery, Ill., and Jerry Hulbert of Aurora,  Colo. She had 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at the chapel of the Reformed Presbyterian Home in Pittsburgh, Pa., 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 8, 1999. A graveside service will be held in the Walton Cemetery, Walton, N.Y. at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 1999.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Reformed Presbyterian Home, 2344 Perrysville Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15214.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Simon Funeral Home in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets in Walton, N.Y.

Elizabeth Dann
SIDNEY — Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Dann, 85, of 46B Union St., Sidney, passed away peacefully Friday, June 4, 1999, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

Betty was born Aug. 5, 1913, in Mount Upton. She was the daughter of the late Merle and Lila Bagg Waterman.

On Nov. 26, 1936, she married Charles C. Dann in Mount Upton.

Mrs. Dann graduated from the Mount Upton Schools, Class of 1930. She attended Buffalo State and graduated from 5th Avenue School of Nursing, New York City.

Betty was a nurse for the office of Dr. Ernest Burian, Sidney. Later she worked for The Hospital, Sidney, until her retirement in 1979. After retirement, Betty worked for Dr. Samuels at the Gelder Medical Group, Sidney.

In 1954, Mr. and Mrs. Dann began growing and hybridizing gladiolas. They became well-known in the growers' circle throughout the country. In 1972, they received the honor of winning the World Grand Champion Award in Toronto, Canada. They hybridized the Empire State Glad.

For several years, Betty owned and operated Danns Flower Market in the Tri-Town area.

She was an active member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church, Sidney.

Mrs. Dann is survived by her husband of 63 years, Charles C. Dann of Oxford; two sons, Robert J. Dann of Oneonta and Willard C. Dann of Sidney; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and David Leidy of Sidney; brother, Carl A. Waterman of Schenectady; two sisters-in-law, Martha Dann of Si"dney and Doris Waterman of South Kortright; six grandchildren, Lisa L. Dann of Cornwall, Conn., Michelle E. Stewart of Industry, Pa., Melinda C. Livingston of Sidney, Julia L. Dann of Greenwich, Conn., Michael D. Leidy of Sidney and Elizabeth H. Leidy of Sidney; four great-grandchildren, Carly Livingston, Andrew Stewart, Jilleen Livingston and Jeffrey D. Stewart; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her daughter Margaret Dann; and a brother, Paul Waterman.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 1999, from St. Lukes Lutheran Church, West Main Street, Sidney, with the Rev. Allison Leitzel, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at the family's convenience in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in her name may be directed to St. Lukes Lutheran Church, Sidney, or to the Sidney Emergency Squad, if desired.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Lynn Olmsted
SIDNEY CENTER — Lynn Olmsted, 98, of R.D. No. 1, town of Masonville, Sidney Center, passed away unexpectedly Friday evening, June 4, 1999, in the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born May 21, 1901, in East Masonville. Lynn was the son of the late Walter J. and Lola Austin Olmsted.

On June 24, 1939, he married Mary F. Neale in Deposit. She predeceased him on March 15, 1996.

For several years Mr. and Mrs. Olmsted operated a dairy farm in the town of Masonville. From 1967 until his retirement in 1972, he was employed by Baileys, Walton.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sidney Center.

Lynn is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Winnie and Mitch Wlasiuk of Sidney Center; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Austin Olmsted of Apulia Station, Neal and Nancy Olmsted of San Antonia,  Texas, and Ray Olmsted of Queens; one sister, Cheile Olmsted of Binghamton; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one niece.

He was predeceased by three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 11, 1999, from C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Sidney Center, and the Rev. Ned Lintern, of Otego, officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Thursday at the funeral chapel. His family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Trout Creek Emergency Squad, if desired.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Nina F. Ruland
JEFFERSON — Nina F. Ruland entered into eternal rest at her home in  Jefferson on Monday, June 7, 1999.

She was born in Summit, the daughter of Austin and Lorissa (Mead) Foote.

Nina was a housewife all of her life, but found time to participate in many community events. She was a member of the  Jefferson United Methodist Church, which she served as treasurer for many years. She also was a member of the United Methodist Women and served as president of this group. She was a member of the  Jefferson Ramona Grange for more than 50 years. Nina was a member of the Eastern Star and held offices in this group. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Nina was employed for many years at the  Jefferson Central School cafeteria and supervised many church dinners with her expert ability. The community and church will certainly miss her and her many talents. God Bless You Nina!

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold B. Ruland, who she married in 1937; a brother, Winthrop Foote; and two sisters, Laura Burnett and Nellie Cole.

A sister, Olma Burnett, and a sister-in-law, Esther Foote, survive her. She is also survived by four stepchildren, Dorothy Anderson and Virginia Patterson of Stamford and William and Walter Ruland of  Jefferson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at the  Jefferson United Methodist Church on Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Gockel and the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery,  Jefferson.

There will be no viewing hours.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
