Sigmund Imbierowicz
JEFFERSON — Sigmund Edward Imbierowicz, 49, of  Jefferson, died suddenly Thursday, June 10, 1999, at the Albany Medical Center, Albany.

He was born Jan. 17, 1950, in Elblag, Poland, the son of the late Edward and Olga Imbierowicz.

He married Ania Krasinski in 1981, in Brookville, Long Island. She survives.

He was a self-employed international trader.

Sigmund is survived by his wife, Ania; his children, Arthur and Alexandra of  Jefferson and Michael Gobi of Warsaw, Poland; his half brother, Andzej of Brussels; and a half sister, Kisha Byrnes of New York City.

A memorial Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 1999, at St. Anns on Route 10 in Summit. Afterward friends and family are invited to the house on Shew Hollow Road in  Jefferson.

His body was donated to the Anatomical Gift Program, Albany Medical Center.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Jude's Childrens Hospital.

Evelyn D. Nielsen
ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for the cremated remains of Evelyn D. Nielsen, 80, who passed away Dec. 14, 1997, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 18, 1999, Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

James H. Lockwood
HIGHLANDS RANCH,  Colo. — Graveside committal services for the cremated remains of James H. Lockwood, 53, of Highlands Ranch,  Colo., and formerly of Oneonta, who passed away June 18, 1998, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 18, 1999, at Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Mr. Lockwood is the son of Evelyn D. Nielsen, whose services will also be held in Glenwood Cemtery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home.

Martha Pfleger
DELHI — Martha Pfleger, 89, of Delhi, died Sunday, June 13, 1999, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

She was born Feb. 2, 1910, in Dampfack, Germany, the daughter of George and Dorothy Gunzel Schneider.

Her husband was the late Otto Pfleger. He passed away in 1989.

At Mrs. Pfleger's request cremation will take place.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

John Sumner Tobey
AFTON — John Sumner Tobey, 91, of 158 Afton Lake Road, Afton, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at the Sidney Skilled Nursing Facility.

He was born Sept. 18, 1907, in Smyrna, the son of Edmund Pope Tobey and Lucy Conley Tobey.

After graduating from Smyrna High School in 1925, and the Norwich Teacher Training Class in 1926, he taught in the Guilford Center one-room school until he went to work for the Briggs Lumber Company, March 13, 1927.

He married Mary Christle on June 21, 1930, in Norwich.

Mr. Tobey was appointed manager of the Afton branch of the Briggs Lumber Company in December 1931; he later became vice president of the company and retired Dec. 31, 1974. He was a trustee of the Afton Methodist Church and served several terms on the board of the Sky Lake Methodist Camp. As a member of the Afton Central School Board of Education from 1938 to 1953, he served as both president and clerk. He was a director of the First National Bank of Afton and later served on the advisory board of the Afton branch of the National Bank and Trust Company. He was also a member of the Afton Water Board.

Mr. Tobey is survived by his wife, Mary Christle Tobey; daughters, Ann Tobey of Aurora, Alice Morell of Oneonta and Irene Zablocki of Afton; special son-in-law, Ronald Zablocki; grandchildren, Karen Zablocki Richards and Theresa Zablocki, both of Norfolk, Va., and David (Susan) Morell of Oneonta; great-grandchildren, Mary and Laura Richards of Norfolk, Va.; sisters, Mable Dilworth of Norwich and Ruth Doing of  Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Zablocki; a brother, Joseph; and sisters, Harriet Spicer, Marian Tobey and Maude Rice.

There will be no calling hours.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family, with a memorial service to be held later.

Contributions may be made to the Afton Emergency Squad, Afton, N.Y. 13730 or to the charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Dorothy Memorial Homes of Afton and Bainbridge.

Marie E. Tracy
ONEONTA — Marie E. Tracy, 78, of Oneonta, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born Oct. 6, 1920, in College Point, the daughter of Bryant and Elizabeth (Froehlich) Tracy.

Miss Tracy was a manager of the stock and mail department with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in Lake Success, retiring in September 1983, then moving to the area.

She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

Miss Tracy is survived by her brother-in-law, Ralph Bidwell of Worcester; a nephew, Joseph Bidwell of Australia; cousins, Delores Homardo of Long Island and Jane Thompson of Virginia; a grandnephew, John Bidwell of Scotia; and a grandniece, Christine Hanes of Cobleskill.

She was predeceased by her sister, Frances Bidwell; and a nephew, John L. Bidwell.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 19, 1999, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Ryan as the celebrant. Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

Contributions may be made to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

Harriet M. Gifford
BLOOMVILLE — Harriet M. Gifford, 79, of Bloomville, passed away peacefully at her home, Wednesday, June 16, 1999.

She was born in New York City on Feb. 1, 1920.

She has been an area resident for the past 25 years, she moved here from Bay Shore, Long Island.

Harriet is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Adam Billek of Bloomville, Kathleen and John Smith of Painter, Va., Elizabeth and John Lakatos of Brooksville, Fla., and Faith and Tony Curley of Kerhonkson; one son and daughter-in-law, George and Beverly Gifford of Charleston, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers; and one sister.

She was a housewife. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and playing pinochle with her friends.

She was not only a grandma and nana, she will be loved and missed by all.

Her body was donated to the Anatomical Gift Program of Albany Medical Center, Albany.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

The family would like to thank the Catskill Area Hospice for their support and concern at this time of grieving.

Jeannette Loucks
VESTAL — Burial and committal service for Jeanette Loucks of Vestal, and formerly of Oneonta and Binghamton, who passed away March 11, 1999, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 19, 1999, at Nineveh Cemetery, Route 7, Nineveh, with pastor Roger Fredericks, of North Fenton United Methodist Church, officiating.

As this date would have been Jeannette's 87th birthday, this occasion will be a time to celebrate her life rather than a time to mourn her death. Attendees are invited to join in this celebration at a potluck lunch to be held immediately after the service at Cole Park.

Emily Bain Potter
HARTWICK — Mrs. Emily Bain Potter, 83, of East Main Street in Hartwick, went to be with her Lord on Thursday morning, June 17, 1999 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. Her wish to pass swiftly was granted.

She was born April 5, 1916, in Burlington, a daughter of Charles and Ida (Rogers) Bain.

She married R. Waldo Potter on Aug. 15, 1941, in Dutch Valley. Mr. Potter died Sept. 13, 1975.

Mrs. Potter was raised in Burlington and was a graduate of Edmeston High School. She began pursuing her career as a librarian by attending the New York State College for Teachers (now known as SUNY Albany), graduating in 1939 with degree in library sciences. After receiving her master's degree, she became a librarian at the Ilion Public Library.

Following their move to Hartwick in 1945, she devoted her life to raising her family. From 1962 until 1967, she served as the director of the Sidney Public Library and then served as a librarian for the Cooperstown Central School until 1978. Mrs. Potter was instrumental in establishing the Kinney Memorial Library in Hartwick where she was currently serving as librarian. Throughout her long life of service and charity, and her work as a librarian, she touched many lives.

She was a very active, devoted and faithful member of the Hartwick Christian Church. She was also a member of the New York Library Association, the Hartwick Historical Society, the Rebekahs and was a former trustee of the Four County Library System.

Mrs. Potter leaves a legacy throughout her children who were shaped by her example. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Stephen Sywetz of Pierstown and  Washington, D.C., Mary and Richard Balcom of Toddsville, Janet Potter and Tim Reilly of Oneonta and Linda and Tom Foody of Binghamton; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert and Barbara Potter of Hartwick and David Potter of Nyssa, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Agnes Szeliga of Sauquoit; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Frederica Hornbeck of Hartwick; and one niece and two nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her brother, Robert Bain, and her niece, Dawn Hornbeck.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 21, 1999, at the Hartwick Christian Church with the Rev. Lavern Saxer, pastor, officiating. A committal service and burial will be held privately and at the convenience of the family in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Homme in Cooperstown from 2-4 amd 7-9 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 1999, when Mrs. Potter's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Hartwick Christian Church building fund, P.O. Box 65, Hartwick, N.Y. 13348-0065; the Kinney Memorial Library, P.O. Box 176, Hartwick, 13348-0176; or the Hartwick Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 208, Hartwick, 13348-0208.

Wanda L. Murdock
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Wanda L. Murdock, 86, of Brunlar Court and formerly of Fly Creek, died Thursday morning, June 17, 1999, at Bassett Hospital.

She was born May 7, 1913, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Almond and Anna (Graves) Newkirk. She married Robert B. Murdock on Aug. 17, 1934, in Cooperstown. Mr. Murdock died Oct. 13, 1996.

A lifelong area resident, Wanda attended schools in Richfield Springs. During the 1950s and 1960s, she was employed as a sales clerk at The Smart Shop on Main Street in Cooperstown. She especially enjoyed sewing and quilting and was an avid fan of NASCAR racing.

Wanda was a member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church and the Otsego-Hartwick Chapter No. 201, Order of the Eastern Star in Cooperstown.

She is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Phyllis and Jerry Selan of Fly Creek, Janice Murdock of Austell, Ga., and Nancy Murdock of Cooperstown; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Douglas Murdock of Providence, R.I.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by one sister, Donella Sponburgh; and three brothers, Karl Newkirk, Jess Newkirk and Albert Newkirk.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 26, 1999, in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery with Rev. Douglas Burleigh, chaplain of Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, officiating.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Ernest F. Poole
NORWICH — Ernest F. Poole, 54, of Manley Road, Norwich, and longtime Norwich and Gilbertsville area resident, passed away on Thursday in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.

Ernest grew up in New Finland, N.J., and at the age of 14, moved to the Gilbertsville area and attended Gilbertsville Central School. Following his schooling, he went to work with his dad on the family farm. At the early age of 16, he learned to drive trucks, and continued to do until the time of his death. One of his first jobs as a truck driver was hauling milk; he also worked for a period of time for the town of Butternuts. Ernest had been employed by the former Victory Markets for a period of 19 years as a truck driver. At the time of his death, he was employed as a transport driver by Mirabito Fuel Group.

An avid outdoorsman, Ernest enjoyed hunting, especially bow hunting. He also liked the stock car races. In his earlier years, he had played the drums in local bands. He was a former Cub Scout leader in Gilbertsville.

Born March 4, 1945, in Franklin, N.J., Ernest was the son of Huston and Marjorie (Post) Poole.

He is survived by his companion, Laura Soro of Norwich; three sons and their wives, Steven James and Tracy Poole of Gilbertsville, Scott and Yvonne Poole of East Meredith and Ty Poole of Jim Thorpe, Pa. He is also survived by his stepsons, Joseph and Edward Pastore, both of Norwich; his brother, John Poole of Florida; and five grandchildren, RaeLynne Poole, Wyatt Poole, Alexander Poole, Kayla Poole and Brandon Poole.

Memorial services for Ernest will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday from 6-8 p.m.

Kenneth L. Lent
MASONVILLE — Kenneth L. Lent, 88, of Masonville, passed away Thursday evening, June 17, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Jan. 29, 1911, in Otego. Ken was the son of the late Frank G. and Nancy Hammond Lent.

On Oct. 21, 1940, he married Ethlyn "Stub" Giles in Bachelorville. She predeceased him on Nov. 28, 1985.

Mr. Lent was a retired machinist for the Amphenol Corp., Sdieny. For several years, he operated a dairy farm in the Masonville area.

He was a member of the Federated Church, Masonville; Masonville Grange and the IAM&AW Local 1529, Sidney.

Surviving are five sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Patricia Lent of Masonville, Frank and Doris Lent of Chittenango, Douglas and Donna Lent of Afton, Edward and Verna Lent of Masonville and Terry and Kathy Lent of Bainbridge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Carl Ketchum of Bliss and Elma and Samuel Costello of Nineveh; his longtime companion, Neita E. VanValkenburgh of Masonville; two brothers, Elmer Lent of Eaton and Harold Lent of Oneonta; 33 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Irene Beames and Gladys Nichols.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 21, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Sunday at the funeral chapel. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m. Sunday evening.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Masonville Emergency Squad, Masonveille.

Norman S. Scutt
OTEGO — Norman S. Scutt, 58, of Otego, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 17 at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born to the late Stanley and Doris E. (Wilcox) Scutt on Dec. 11, 1940 in Olney, Md.

Norman was employed by Bordens Chemical Co., Bainbridge, until 1992.

He married Mary Flack on July 27, 1994, in Walton. He was a member of the NRA and was an avid skeet shooter.

Norman was an elder in the Plymouth Community Church, Walton.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Scutt of Otego; two sons, Rick Scutt and Bill Scutt of Unadilla; two daughters and a son-in-law, Carey and David Ross of Nebraska and Sandra Davis of Oneida; their mother, Janice Scutt; a sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Bernard Wojcik of Otego; 12 grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 20 at 2 p.m. at Plymouth Community Church on the Walton-Franklin Road, Walton. Pastor Joseph Bokel will officiate.

Friends may all from 1-2 p.m. on Sunday prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in McClure Cemetery, McClure.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad or the Plymouth Community Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Ruby May Stone
ONEONTA — Ruby May Stone, 70, of Oneonta, died Thursday at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Ruby May was born April 16, 1929, in Conklin. She married William F. Stone Sr. on Oct. 11, 1956, in West Oneonta. He died Jan. 25, 1988.

For most of her life, Ruby May was a homemaker.

She is survived by four sons, William F. Stone Jr. of Oneonta, Raymond Stone of Otego, John Stone of Middletown and Michael Stone of Ithaca; two daughters, Daisy Rodriguez of Laurens and Donna Stone of Schenevus; six grandchildren; two dear friends, Merv and Pat Mai of Oneonta; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She predeceased by a daughter, Ruth Guy.

A funeral service will be held Monday, June 21, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Christopher Ellis, pastor of the Mount Vision Bible Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

Friends may call one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

James R. Augustine Sr.
DOWNSVILLE — Mr. James R. Augustine Sr. of Downsville died suddenly Saturday morning, June 19, 1999, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 9, 1922, in Brooklyn, the son of Louis and Elizabeth (Love) Augustine.

He married Lillian Decker on Nov. 16, 1947, in the Baptist Church in Ridgefield Park, N.J. On Sept. 25, 1956, they were remarried at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Downsville.

James had served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was the head custodian for the Townsend School in Walton, before his retirement.

He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church of Downsville, and the Downsville American Legion.

James was a very devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, who enjoyed spending time with his family and considered his home his castle. He will be greatly missed by all.

James is survived by his loving wife, Lydia (Lillian) of Downsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Lydia and Scott Craig of Walton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James R. Augustine Jr. of New Port Beach,  Calif. and Martin and Cindy Augustine of Oak Ridge, N.J.; four grandchildren, Nerissa and Joseph (Joey) Craig of Walton, and Robert and Ryan Boenitz of Oak Ridge, N.J.; two brothers, Vincent Augustine of Livingston Manor and Eugene Augustine of Shandlee; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Thomas of Margaretville, Robert of Livingston Manor and William of Florida.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Downsville, the Rev. Eugene F. Willis, officiating. Burial will be in the Paige Cemetery, Downsville. The family will be present at the Lyon Bros.-Way Chapel today from 6 to 9 p.m. when those who wish may call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of symapthy may be made to either the Downsville Emergency Squad, Downsville, or to the Holy Family Catholic Church, Downsville in loving memory of James R. Augustine Sr.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., Funeral Home, Walton.
