Barbara L. Friedel Benson
LATHAM — Mrs. Barbara L. Friedel Benson, 63, wife of John E. Benson Jr. of Old Loudon Road, Latham died Friday, June 18, 1999, at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, after a brief illness.

She was born in West Oneonta, the daughter of Louise Tearfall Friedel of Oneonta and the late Louis Friedel.

Barbara was educated in the Oneonta schools and was a communicant of Our Lady of Assumption Church, Latham. She had been employd in the Food Service Department of the State University College at Oneonta and later the State University at Albany, retiring approximately 15 years ago.

She loved gardening and she loved her grandchildren.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, John, are her daughters, Tammy Lee and Richie Graham of San Barbara,  Calif., Doreen L. Bevins of Latham and Tammy Jo Bevins of Binghamton. She is the stepmother of Suzanne and Robert Schulz of Futonville and Robert J. Benson of Green Island. She is the sister of Louis and Barbara Friedel of Macon, Ga. her twin sister, Norma and Gordan Hyatt of Jamesville, Paula and Ralph VanLoan of Unadilla and Walter Friedel of West Oneonta. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Homes, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham, thence to Our Lady Of the Assumption Church, Watervliet-Shaker Road, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions/donations may be made to St. Peter's Hospital Foundation Oncology (Cancer) Research Department, 317 South Manning Boulevard, Suite 160, Albany, N.Y. 12208.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Looby Funeral Home, Cohoes.

Irene R. Hotaling
UNADILLA — Irene R. Hotaling, 60, of Unadilla died unexpectedly Friday, June 18, 1999, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 3, 1938, in Walton, the daughter of Ralph and Mary (Lambert) Finch.

She married Lyle G. Hotaling on Aug. 31, 1958, in Franklin.

As a homemaker, Irene was the motivating force of her family. She was a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother and daughter. She will be sorely missed.

Irene is survived by her husband, Lyle G. Hotaling of Unadilla; her mother, Mary Finch of Otego; her children and their spouses, Gary and Sheri Hotaling of Sidney, Barbara and Gerald Hicks, Daniel and Stacy Hotaling, and David and Wendy Hotaling, all of Unadilla; her grandchildren, Logan, Makenzi, Michael, Justin, Adam, Gerald Jr., Kirsten, Collin, Zachary and Bailey. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son and daughter, Jerry and Candy Hotaling, and a brother, Robert Finch.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin with the Rev. Michael Rowe, pastor of the Harpursville Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call this evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Philip J. Tryon
GRAND GORGE — Philip J. Tryon, 21, of Grand Gorge died Saturday, June 19, 1999, in Roxbury.

He was born May 4, 1978, in Walton, the son of John and Diana Madore Tryon.

Philip was a graduate of Stamford Central School, Class of 1996, and attended the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill. He was a mechanic at Becker Tires in Grand Gorge.

Philip is survived by his parents of Stamford; two sisters, April and Crystal Tryon of Stamford; and a brother, Tom Tryon of Roxbury; as well as two nephews, Thomas and Timmy Tryon of Roxbury; his grandmother, Beryl Murphy of Hobart; and a great-grandmother, Mildred Davis of Stamford; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart with the Pastor Elliot Oakes, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Duane E. Jones
HARTWICK SEMINARY — Duane E. Jones, 66, of Hartwick Seminary, died early Monday morning, June 21, 1999, at his home.

He was born on July 16, 1932, in Corning, a son of Peter and Helen (Kenyon) Jones.

He married Joyce Sargent on Nov. 26, 1956, in Croton, Mass.

Duane graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1952, and entered the United States Marine Corps, where he served in the United States Drum and Bugle Corps. He left the service in 1955, and worked as a stone mason with his father, Peter. Their talent can be seen throughout Cooperstown and the surrounding area. Duane was also employed by the Grand Union in Oneonta, where he served as manager. He was transferred to the Grand Union in Cobleskill, which later became the Price Chopper, where he worked as a meat cutter, retiring in the fall of 1997.

Duane was a devoted member of the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery Association, serving on its board of directors for many years and frequently working on its upkeep and beautification. For more than 30 years he was a representative for Cherry Valley Memorials Inc.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown and served as a deacon and at one time sang in the choir. He also served as a volunteer at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, coached Little League, was a former leader of the Bucks and Does 4-H Club and was active with the Boy Scouts of America, devoting his time to Troop 1254 and serving on the Eagle Board of Review.

An avid golfer, Duane often played at Cee Jays Golf Club in Laurens, where he was a league member, and also enjoyed bowling with leagues at the Clarks Sports Center in Cooperstown. His friendly nature and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

One of Duane's greatest accomplishments was being a loving and dedicated father and husband. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Joyce; his daughter, Susan E. Bergene and her husband, Gregory, and their daughters, Kristin Ellen and Hanna Joy; his daughter, Sandra Lee  Jones of Manhattan; his daughter, Sharon L. Otto and her husband, Paul, of Albany and their son, Paul Christopher; his son, Steven Duane  Jones and his wife, Eva L., of Norwich and their children, Cora Elizabeth, Kelly Christine and David Duane; his sister, Carol  Jones Burnett of Concord, N.C.; his brother, LaRue H.  Jones and his wife, Mary, of Watertown; and many nieces, nephews, special friends and extended family.

He was predeceased by one brother, Hugh Kenyon Jones.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 26, 1999, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown with the Rev. Stephen J. Quinlan, co-pastor, officiating. Burial will be private in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820; the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery Association, attention: Treasurer, 4685 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326; or the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y 13905-4797.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

James R. Kelly
ONEONTA — James R. Kelly, 91, of Sidney, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 1999, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, Oneonta.

He was born to the late Patrick J. and Ellen (O'Brien) Kelly on Sept. 9, 1907, in New York City.

James married Anna E. Walker on June 25, 1938, in Queens. She predeceased him.

He was an attorney for Costello and Shea before retiring at the age of 78. James then moved to Sidney.

He was a member of the Queens Bar Association, Elks Lodge in Queensboro, and a long standing member and past president of the Holy Name Society at Acension Church, Elmhurst.

James was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

James is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret (Peg) and David Land of Unadilla and Mary Ann and Norbert Krygier of Ferndale, Mich.; seven grandchildren, James, Valeria, David, Ann, Dolores, Sean and Robert; seven great-grandchildren, Ross, Chelsea, Heather, Kaitlyn, Miranda, McKayla and Alyssia; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by five brothers, Tom, Pete, William, Frank and Charles; and three sisters, Alice, May and Ellen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, June 24, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Joseph Schuck officiating.

Friends may call on Wednesday, June 23, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gilead House of Prayer, 1011 state Highway 7, Unadilla, N.Y 13849.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Harry (Eddie) Back
CENTRAL BRIDGE — Harry (Eddie) Back, 84, of Pine Hill Road, died Monday, June 21, 1999, in his home following an extended illness.

Harry was born Oct. 12, 1914, in Brooklyn, the son of Max and Annie (Rosethal) Back.

During his childhood years, his parents moved to Central Bridge, where he remained and married Alice Lawton in 1938. She predeceased him on Sept. 12, 1997.

In addition to operating the family farm, he was a machinist with General Electric, and was the founder and proprietor of Fyr-Fyter Sales & Service until his retirement in the early 1980s.

Mr. Back was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Navy from 1942-1945, and was a member of the Veterans' of Foreign War Post No. 5088 of Cobleskill. Harry was also a member of the Free and Accepted Masons' Lodge No. 491 of Schoharie, involved in the Central Bridge Fire Department, and an active Democrat at the grass roots level.

Mr. Back is survived by one daughter, Maxine Back-Heffron of Niskayuna; two sons, Nelson Back of Central Bridge and Jeffrey Back of Oneonta; and four grandchildren.

A Masonic service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. The funeral home will welcome friends who call before the service at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Bridge Rescue Squad, Central Bridge, N.Y. 12035 or the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 MacArthur Ave., Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

Ruth A. Everett
ROXBURY — Ruth A. Everett, 92, of McCandless Turnpike, Pittsburgh, Pa., formerly of Roxbury, died on Tuesday, June 15, 1999.

Mrs. Everett was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church.

She was the beloved wife of the late Earl James Everett; mother of the Rev. Paul F. Everett of Ingomar; grandmother of Christopher Peale Everett of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Jennifer R. Everett of Boston, Mass.; and is also survived by two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, June 26, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury. Friends will be received at the church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., on Saturday.

Contributions may be made to the Pittsburgh Experiment, 1802 Investment Building, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15222 or Christ Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 5910 Babcock Boulevard, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15237. Interment will be in the Roxbury Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Robert A. Prinz
STAMFORD — Robert A. Prinz, 78, of Brookfield, Conn., and formerly of Stamford, died in Stamford.

He was born July 24, 1920, in Danbury, Conn., the son of Rudolph and Marina Prinz.

Bob was married to Alice Ferry and later to Edna Swenson, who have both predeceased him.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Corps, during World War II.

Bob was employed for 30 years in corporate sales for Republic Foil of Danbury, Conn. He lived in Stamford for 10 years, where he operated a golf repair business from his home. He was a member of the American Legion and Elks Club in Danbury, Conn. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church of Stamford and the Stamford Golf Club.

Bob was an avid golfer and photographer.

Bob is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Wayne Okada of Lahaina, Hawaii, and Melinda and Steven Crews of Westport, Conn.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert A. Prinz Jr. of Redwood City,  Calif., John E. and Lori Prinz of Briarcliff Manor and Roger P. and Lisa Prinz of Brookfield, Conn.; six grandchildren, Stephanie, Anthony, Mark, Nicholas, Alexis, Melanie; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Eleanor Barhite of Bethel, Conn., and Dorothy and Phil McGee of Fond du Lac, Wis.; a brother, Raymond Prinz of Bethel, Conn.; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 24, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford with the Rev. Joseph Cebula, pastor, presiding.

Friends attending Mass on Thursday will have an opportunity to visit with family members after the services.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Bob's memory to the Stamford Fire Department, Stamford.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Viola K. Hofmann
COOPERSTOWN — Miss Viola K. Hofmann, 94, formerly of Forest Hills, Queens, died late Monday evening, June 21, 1999, at The Meadows.

She was born on Feb. 20, 1905, in New York City, a daughter of Charles C. and Katherine (Pfennig) Hofmann.

Raised in Queens, Miss Hofmann graduated from the Newtown High School in 1921, and then went on to attend business school. For more than 20 years she served as the executive secretary to the chairman of the board of Diamond International Inc. in New York City. After spending most of her life in Forest Hill, Queens, she moved to the Cooperstown area in 1992.

Miss Hofmann attended the Ridgewood Presbyterian Church in Queens and enjoyed traveling throughout the world with Barbara Seidl of Long Island City.

Miss Hofmann is survived by several cousins, including Loretto Marchese of Clifton Park, Alice Lazarro of Troy and Ronald Zesch of Watchung, N.J.; and her godson, James F. Wolff, and his wife, Margaret, of Fly Creek.

She was predeceased by her brother, Charles Hofmann, who died in August of 1937.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, 1999, in the Hofmann Family Plot at Lutheran Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens, with the Rev. David F. Shult, pastor of the House of Hope Presbyterian Church in Belrose, Queens, officiating.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Activities Fund, care of The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Frank A. Page
AFTON — Frank A. Page, 88, of Route 41, Afton, passed away Monday evening, June 21, 1999, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

He was born Nov. 2, 1910, in Oxford. Frank was the son of the late Erford and Hazel Fields Page.

On Nov. 25, 1932, he married Martha Beman in Nineveh. She predeceased him on Nov. 24, 1994.

For numerous years Mr. and Mrs. Page owned and operated Page's Market in Afton. He retired in 1974.

Mr. Page was an honorary member of the Afton Fire Department and a former member of the Afton Sertoma.

Mr. Page is survived by six grandsons, Nicholas, John, Jeffrey, Gregory, Shawn and Jamie Page; three brothers, Howard, Morris and Myrlin Page; one sister, Marian Hoyt; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his two sons, John and Lynn Page.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 25, 1999, in the Glenwood Cemetery, Afton, with the Rev. Douglas Horne, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Afton, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Afton Fire Department or to the Afton Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Sarah H. Barnum
DOWLING PARK, Fla. — Sarah Henrietta Gardner Barnum, 90, of Dowling Park, Fla., formerly of Danbury, Conn., died Sunday, June 20, 1999, in Dowling Park, Fla. She was the widow of Chester A. Barnum.

Mrs. Barnum was born in Danbury, Conn., on July 10, 1908, a daughter of the late Henry C. and Loretta Wilkes Gardner.

She lived in Danbury, Conn., until 1950, moving to Unadilla, N.Y., and in 1989 moved to Dowling Park, Fla.

She was a former member of the Advent Christian Church in Danbury, Conn., and was secretary of the Loyal Workers for many years and primary age Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Dowling Park, Fla., and taught adult nursing home classes at the church.

Mrs. Barnum is survived by a sister, Elmina Marie Gardner of Dowling Park, Fla.; a niece, Shirley Tucker of North Richmond Hill,  Texas; one nephew; two great-nieces; four great-nephews; as well as several great-great-nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Wooster Cemetery, Danbury, Conn., Friday afternoon, June 25, 1999, at 1 p.m.

There are no calling hours.

Hull Funeral Service, 60 Division St., Danbury, Conn., is handling the arrangements.

Louise M. Loring
ST. JOHNSVILLE — Louise M. Loring, 54, of St. Johnsville, died Wednesday, June 23, 1999, at St. Johnsville Nursing Home.

She was born July 12, 1944, in Oneonta, the daughter of John and Minnie (Groves) Stevens.

She married Donald Loring. Louise has lived in St. Johnsville for five years.

Louise is survived by her husband, Donald Loring Sr. of St. Johnsville; her mother, Minnie Stevens of Middlefield; a son, Donald Loring II of St. Johnsville; two daughters, Rebecca Loring of St. Johnsville and Roberta and her husband, Robert Rocas, of Canajoharie; three grandchildren, Sergio, Brittany and Rachal; three brothers, Richard Stevens of Schoharie, Eddie Stevens of Florida and Fredie Stevens of Charlotteville; four sisters, Irene Layman of Milford, Viola Effner of Warnerville, Helen Mykel of Ft. Plain and Marge Dodson of Schenevus; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 26, 1999, at the Schenevus Cemetery with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor of the Worcester and East Worcester United Methodist Churches, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Louise to the American Cancer Society, or the St. Johnsville Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Walter Vosbrink Sr.
PINE HILL — Walter H. Vosbrink Sr., 71, of Pine Hill, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 19, 1928, in Staten Island, the son of Henry Vosbrink and Martha Buesch.

He married Jean Kiena on Sept. 4, 1958, in Staten Island. She died Oct. 21, 1990.

He was in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was a tug boat captain for Great Lakes Drudge & Dock Co., Staten Island. He retired in 1987.

In 1973, he moved to Kelly Corners and then to his present home in Pine Hill.

Walter is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Walter H. Vosbrink Jr. and Nancy of Roxbury; two brothers, Jay and Henry Vosbrink of Staten Island; daughter-in-law, Mary Lou  White of New Jersey; and three stepgranddaughters.

He was predeceased by stepson, Robert  White.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
