Olga  Johnson Wing
MORRIS — Olga  Johnson Wing, 100, formerly of Morris, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at the Valley Health Services Facility in Herkimer.

She was born June 7, 1899, in Spencer, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Christine (Larson) Johnson.

She was married to Fayette Wing on Nov. 5, 1918. He died in 1969.

She was well-known in the Butternut Valley as a child-care provider for more than 20 years. She was a longtime member of the Morris Baptist Church and the Grange.

Olga is survived by her daughter, Iona Mallinson of Sun City,  Calif.; and her three sons, Fayette Wing Jr. of Altamonte Springs, Fla., Donald Wing of Morris and Robert Wing of Morris; and several grand, great- and great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister, Elna Reed.

Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at 11 a.m., at the Wing Family plot in Hillington Cemetery in Morris with the Rev. J. Mark Norlund officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Rowan D. Spraker Jr.
COOPERSTOWN — Rowan D. (Bud) Spraker Jr., 84, a lifelong resident of Cooperstown and retired editor of the Freeman's Journal, died Tuesday morning, June 29, 1999, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Aug. 18, 1914, in Cooperstown, a son of Rowan D. and Inez (Fay) Spraker Sr.

He married Mary Browinig on Sept. 2, 1939, in Springfield Center. Mary died on Dec. 26, 1974. He then married Marguerite K. (Peg) Clark on March 27, 1982, in Cooperstown. Peg died on Feb. 23, 1998.

Bud graduated from Cooperstown High School in the Class of 1932. He graduated from Cornell University in 1939 with a bachelor of arts degree, and then returned to Cooperstown to join the staff of the Freeman's Journal as a reporter. In 1955, he became editor of The Journal, and held that position until his retirement in 1972.

Bud was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown and a member of the Native Sons of Cooperstown. He was a member and past master of the Otsego Lodge No. 138 F&AM, a former treasurer of the Lakewood Cemetery Association, a former member and past president of the Cooperstown Rotary Club, and a retired member of Company No. 2 of the Cooperstown Fire Department.

Bud will be remembered by many for his magic performances for clubs, civic groups and on other occasions throughout the Central New York area.

Bud is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Ann B. Spraker of El Cajon,  Calif., and Katherine and Richard Rohrlack of Otego; two grandchildren, Michael Rohrlack of Los Angeles,  Calif., and Tara Rohrlack of Lake George; a sister-in-law, Miss Barbara Browning of Utica; a brother-in-law, Wilfred Browning, also of Utica; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Inez Hoffman, who died on Dec. 25, 1940.

A funeral service and burial will take place at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 1999, in Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Donald L. Quinney
STUART, Fla. — Donald L. Quinney, 77, formely of Sidney and Bainbridge, passed away Saturday, June 26, 1999, in Stuart, Fla.

He was born Aug. 8, 1921, to the late Arnold and B. Inez (Sutton) Quinney in Carbondale, Pa.

Don attended and graduated from Carbondale High School and Keystone College. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army.

Don married Barbara Campbell; she predeceased him in July 1979.

He was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix for 35 years, until he retired as general manager in 1977.

Don was a member of the Bainbridge American Legion, St. Peters Episcopal Church, Bainbridge, The Engineers Club, served on the Advisory Board of the Sidney office of NBT of Norwich, a former member of The Hospital board of directors and the Tri County Motor Club. He was very active in many community affairs.

Don married Joan Osborn in September 1980.

Don is survived by his wife, Joan Quinney of Stuart, Fla.; his brother, Dr. Dean Quinney of Purcellville, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Marilyn Quinney of Bainbridge; grandchildren, Tammy and David Melo of New Rochelle, N.Y., Theresa Quinney of New Rochelle, N.Y., Ashley Mohler of West Warwick, R.I., and Jeremy Mohler of Bethlehem, Pa.; stepson and daughter-in-law, David and Leslie Osborn of Wesley, Mass.; and their children; one niece and three nephews.

Don is also predeceased by a daughter, Gwendolyn Quinney; and two sisters, Doris McCormick and Lois Lew.

Services are private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Hospital Foundation, The Hospital, Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Louise M. Gleason
SIDNEY — Louise M. Gleason, 71, of Sidney, left us to be with her Lord on Tuesday, June 29, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born to the late Charles and Lula Ann (Cain) Stephens on Oct. 14, 1927, in Wheeling, W.Va.

She married Lawrence E. Gleason on April 22, 1946, in Carbondale, Pa.

Louise attended the Assembly of God, Sidney, and was at one time a self-employed hairdresser.

She was a devoted wife to Lawrence E. Gleason Sr., Sidney.

Louise is survived by her son, Lawrence E. Gleason Jr. of Guilford; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Vincent Capaccio of Ontario and Mary Anne and Michael Porter of Walworth; one brother, Albert Stephens of Florida; six sisters, Robbie Monroe of McGraw, Barbara Smith of Marcellus, Claudia McCall of Cortland, Margaret Coe of Freeville, Shirley Minor of Cortland and Bonnie  Johnson of Cortland; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also predeceased by three brothers, Robert, Jay C. and William "Earl" Stephens.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 2, 1999, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. Pastor Randy Eliason of Sidney Assembly of God will officiate.

Friends may call Thursday, July 1, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Adam V. Billek
BLOOMVILLE — Adam V. Billek, 73, of Bloomville, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born Sept. 3, 1925, in Bayonne, N.J., the son of Adam and Mary (Mirowski) Billek.

His first wife, Louise Anderson, and he were married May 15, 1946, and she passed away in 1984. Mr. Billek then married Sophie Slavinski in New Jersey on Dec. 15, 1984.

Adam was a truck driver in New York City for the Skinners Nuts Inc.

He enjoyed baseball, playing the accordion and dancing. Memberships included a communicant of the Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus in South Kortright and American Legion Post No. 190 in Delhi.

Mr. Billek was a prisoner of war during World War II.

Adam is survived by his wife, Sophie of Bloomville; two sons, Adam B. Billek of Bloomville and James Billek of Colorado; a daughter, Susan DeMarta of New Jersey; two stepsons, Edward Slavinski of South Kortright and Paul Slavinski of Howes Cave; five grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren.

A funeral Mass will take place Thursday, July 1, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus with the Rev. Fr. John Burns officiating. Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 30, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Interment will be at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, South Kortright.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Edna Bladon
STAMFORD — Edna Bladon, 69, passed away on Thursday, June 17, 1999, at A.O. Fox Hospital, after a long illness.

Ms. Bladon was a recent resident of Robinson Terrace, Stamford. Ms. Bladon spent her youth in Letchworth Village, moving to Binghamton in 1980. She moved to Otsego County in 1985, where she resided at the West Street Hill SOCR until 1988, at which time she moved the The Arc Otsego's  Jefferson Avenue home. She lived there until 1995, when she moved to Unadilla to live wih two friends, Alfred and Olin. She resided there until this spring when she needed more medical care.

Ms. Bladon was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Mae Bladon. A cousin, Jane Schlaffer, as well as many friends and staff survive her.

For the past 10 years, The Arc Otsego Guardianship Committee has advocated for Ms. Bladon and acted on her behalf.

Ann Marie Mills and Judith Betts were particularly important in Ms. Bladon's life.

The Arc Otsego Guardianship Committee will host a celebration of life at the Oneonta Day Treatment building, Lower River Street, on Thursday, July 1, 1999, at 3 p.m. Everyone is invited and asked to share his or her thoughts and remembrances of Ms. Bladon.

All contributions can be made to The Arc Otsego-Guardianship Services, 35 Academy St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Michael E. Champlin
BOCA RATON, Fla. — Michael E. Champlin, 40, of Boca Raton, Fla., and formerly of Sidney, N.Y., passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 16, 1999, in Hobes, N.M.

He was born Sept. 9, 1958, in Sidney, N.Y., the son of Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Champlin.

Michael is survived by his parents; brothers, Mark Champlin of Lantana, Fla., Brian Champlin of Sidney, N.Y., and John Champlin of Johnstown, N.Y.; two nieces, Stacy and Shelly Champlin; and one nephew, Sean Champlin.

Funeral services are pending.

Norma Carrington
ONEONTA — Mrs. Norma Carrington of Oneonta died peacefully at home with her family by her side, Tuesday, June 29, 1999.

She was born Sept. 3, 1936, in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of the late Harry W. and Ruth K. (Haliburton) Dearborn.

She married Glen Carringon on April 10, 1956, in Somerville, Mass. Glen passed away July 2, 1997.

Norma was a homemaker. She traveled for 27 years with her husband, Glen, throughout his 20-year Naval career and his employment at the  White House in  Washington, D.C. Having lived on the French Rivera; Argentina; Newfoundland; Newport, Rhode Island; Norfolk, Virginia; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and Oxon Hill, Maryland, Norma and Glen came to Oneonta in 1983, settling about a mile away from where Glen grew up on Southside.

For many years Norma enjoyed doing a weekly child-care program with Sue Dutcher for Exploring Parenting (EXP) through Otsego County Head Start.

Norma is survived by her daughter, Debra Hoffman; her grandchildren, Jennilee and Joshua Hoffman; her mother-in-law, Elsa Carrington; a brother-in-law, Wayne Carrington, and his wife, Dorothy; a brother-in-law, Sterling Carrington; her "Sister" Peg Carrington; her best friend, Barbara Henderson, all of Oneonta; a special cousin and her husband, Jean and John Kezerian of Arlington, Mass.; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Norma was predeceased by her brother, E. Craig Dearborn.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 5, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the West Davenport Free Baptist Church, West Davenport.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Sunday, July 4, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish may call. Burial will be in the Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport.

In lieu of flowers, Norma's request was that expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to the West Davenport Free Baptist Church, care of M. Carrington, R.R. No. 2, Box 412A, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Norma Carrington.

Juanita Carey
DELHI — Juanita (Sally) Carey, 82, of Delhi, died Wednesday morning, June 30, 1999, at Countryside Care Center, following a long illness.

She was born April 7, 1917, in the town of Kortright, daughter of the late Ernest Haynes and Jamesina Haynes Raab.

She was married to James Dickson on Sept. 9, 1939. He preceded her in death on June 29, 1969. She later married Martin Carey on Dec. 4, 1971.

Sally was a graduate of Bloomville High School and the State University College of Technology at Delhi. She was employed at Arbuckles Department Store for many years and later worked for the college alumni association and as a medicaid eligibility clerk at the Delaware County Department of Social Services.

She will be remembered for her interest in horses, she was instrumental in the founding of the Delhi Horse Show, served as a 4-H leader and often rode in local parades and events. She was a 60-year member of the Delhi First Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir for many years and was active in the women's circle. She also belonged to the Delhi Bird Club.

She is survived by her husband, Martin, of Delhi; two daughters, Rita VanNuys of Fairview, N.C., and Donna Ciano of Silver City, N.M.; three grandchildren, Dena-Marie Foley of  Johnson City, Tenn., and Rebecca Mudge and Darren Mudge of Silver City, N.M.; and one great-granddaughter, Anika Mudge of Silver City, N.M. She also has two stepchildren, Chris Carey of Delhi and Patty Elliott of West Laurens.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 3, 1999, at MacArthur Funeral Home at 2 p.m.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to a memorial fund through Delaware National Bank to be used to provide gifts for needy children.

Arrangements are under the direction of MacArthur Funeral Home, Main Street, Delhi.

Eleanor VanValkenburg
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Eleanor VanValkenburg, 84, formerly of 48 East Main St., died on Tuesday morning, June 29, 1999, in Folts Homes, Herkimer.

She was born on Nov. 23, 1914, in Elderado, Wis., daughter of the late William and Ellen Williams Roberts.

Eleanor was raised in Greene and was a graduate of Greene High School Class of 1933.

On June 10, 1937, she married Alfred Lewis VanValkenburg in the Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer, with the Rev. Fr. Kidd officiating. It was a loving and devoted union of 41 years until his passing on May 19, 1980.

She came to Richfield Springs in 1937. For 23 years she worked for the Richfield Springs Central School, school cafeteria, retiring as manager in 1977.

She was a member of Arbutus Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and the Richfield Springs Fireman's Auxiliary.

Surviving her are one son, Alfred L., and his wife, Carol VanValkenburg, of Herkimer; a sister, Catherine, and her husband, William Hughes, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; three grandchildren, Robert and his wife, Catherine VanValkenburg, of Roselle, Ill., Tracy Massaro of Herkimer and Donna and her husband, James Hartman, of Herkimer; six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Robert "Iggy" Hosford of Richfield Springs.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert VanValkenburg, in 1950; four brothers, William, Osmond, Hugh and Robert Roberts; and a sister, Margaret Hart.

Funeral services will be on Friday, July 2, 1999, at 10 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer, with the Rev. Dr. David Oertel, chaplain of Folts Homes, officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the Folts Homes. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

DeForest S. Whitney
ILION — DeForest S. Whitney, 78, of 261 East State St., died on Monday evening, June 28, 1999, in Folts Homes, Herkimer.

He was born on Jan. 1, 1921, in Cooperstown, son of the late Clark DeForest and Grace Emma Bresee Blais Whitney Willmen.

A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Hartwick High School. An honorably discharged United States Navy veteran, he served our country in World War II.

On Dec. 1, 1945, he married Molly Panko in Mohawk. She, too, was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. They shared a loving and devoted union of 41 years until her passing on Feb. 5, 1987.

DeForest was an Ilion resident for 43 years and worked as a machinist for the Remington Arms Co., retiring in 1981. He was a member of Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post, Mohawk.

Surviving him are one son, Clark Charles, and his wife, Marcia Whitney, of Dexter, Mich.; three daughters, Nancy Aleen Whitney-Desautels of San Diego,  Calif., Marianne Grace and her husband, Russell James Hunt Sr., of Jordanville, and Debra Grace Whitney-Sundberg and her husband, Fred, of Manassas, Va.; six grandchildren, Brian and Scott Whitney, Stacy Jacobs, Kristina Coveny, Russell Hunt Jr. and Rebeka Lowell; one great-grandchild, Cole Coveny; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service and interment in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Herkimer County Humane Society, P.O. Box 73, Mohawk, N.Y. 13407, or the Folts Homes, 104 North  Washington St., Herkimer, N.Y. 13350.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

James J. Reisner
BURLINGTON FLATS — James Joseph Reisner, 62, of Burlington Flats and formerly of New York City, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at A.O. Fox Hospital, after a short illness.

He was born Sept. 13, 1936, to Helen and Irving Reisner. Both parents are deceased.

James was known affectionately to his friends as "J.R."

James was a great lover of sports, especially soccer, which he played semi-professionally in his younger years in New York City.

He was a retired carpenter, but would come out of retirement any time to help someone out.

James is survived by his sisters, Jane Garcia of Brooklyn and Helen Perillo of Florida; his special Aunt Babe; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Tommy Reisner of New York.

He is also survived and will be dearly missed by his mutually adopted family of Paul, Regina, Danielle, Aaron, Maggie and Paul David Loiacono, whom he lived with and loved for the past nine years. He will also be dealry missed by his best friends, Edward and Carol Petkus of  Taylor Hill, Edmeston.

James will be cremated and at his request there will be no services in his honor.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.
