Joseph T. Hobbib
ONEONTA — Joseph T. Hobbib, 55, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly on Friday, July 2, 1999, at the Bassett Health Care Center in Cooperstown.

He was born Aug. 23, 1943, in Plainfield, N.J., the son of Joseph B. and Mae (Thompson) Hobbib. He married Elaine Tibbitts on June 4, 1976.

From 1963 to 1967, he served with the U.S. Army National Guard. For the past 30 years, Joe operated the Beer Barrel Inn, a family business located in the Sixth Ward of Oneonta.

Joe was a caring person and portrayed a father image to many of his friends. Through the years, he organized and coordinated many fund-raising events for those who were less fortunate. He was an avid pool player and traveled throughout the area playing in tournaments. Joe was a great animal lover and especially enjoyed horses and dogs.

He is survived by his wife Elaine of Oneonta; his father, Joseph B. Hobbib of West Oneonta; his brother, Charles F. Hobbib of West Oneonta; one niece and one nephew along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 8, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Donald Yarborough, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Otsego County SPCA, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Marjorie Demarest
STAMFORD — Marjorie E. Demarest, 91, of Bradenton, Fla., and formerly of Stamford, died May 2, 1999, at Westminster Asbury Towers of Bradenton, Fla.

She was born Aug. 3, 1907, in Stamford. She was married to the late Clifford Demarest in 1925.

Marjorie lived most of her life in Stamford. Her later years were spent in the Sarasota and Bradenton, Fla., areas. Marjorie was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bradenton, Fla., and a member and past matron of the former Utsayantha Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in Stamford.

She is survived by two sons, C. Donald Demarest of Bradenton, Fla., and Dey E. Demarest of Hensonville; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 11, 1999, at the Demarest family plot in the Stamford Cemetery with the Rev. Frank Hornbeck, officiating.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Marjorie's memory to the First United Methodist Church, 603 11th St. W., Bradenton, Fla. 34205.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Robert T. Howard
EDMESTON — Robert T. "Bob" Howard, 77, of Edmeston, died Saturday, July 3, 1999, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Graveside services, with the Rev. John Buskey officiating, will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Edmeston Union Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Harry J. Deinhardt
ANDES — Harry J. Deinhardt, 73, of Canada Falls and Andes, died July 5, 1999, at Albany Medical Center, Albany.

He was born July 18, 1925, in Queens, the son of John and Helen Deinhardt.

He married Eleanor M. Ihlo on Sept. 15, 1950, in New York City.

He was a member of the Merchant Marines and a member of the Army for three years serving in the Korean War.

He was a retired building maintainer for the city of New York. He was a part-time resident from 1972 until moving full-time in 1989 to Andes.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor M. Deinhardt of Margaretville; two sons, Michael Deinhardt of Centereach, L.I., and Robert Deinhardt of Woodhaven; one daughter, Kathy O'Neil of Centereach; four grandchildren; one brother, Arthur Deinhardt; and two sisters, Helen Deinhardt and Rita Sweeney.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 1999, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell officiating.

Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville. Calling hours will be at the Hynes Funeral Home on Wednsday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Paul S. Harrison
MOUNT VISION — Paul S. Harrison, 83, of Mount Vision, died Monday, July 5, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta after an extended illness.

He was born April 2, 1916, at the family home in Mount Vision. He was a son of Herman E. and Elizabeth (Armstrong) Harrison. He married Eva Brown on May 21, 1944, at the Mount Vision United Methodist Church.

Paul graduated as valedictorian from Laurens Central School in 1934. He was a lifelong member of the Otego Valley Grange. Paul was an active member of the Mount Vision United Methodist Church for 75 years and his life was an outward expression of his spiritual devotion.

Paul was the fifth generation of dairy farmers who successfully operated the family farm locally known as the Harrison Homestead until his retirement at the age of 75 in 1991. Since retiring Paul pursued a lifelong interest in woodworking.

Paul is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eva; a daughter, Marjory Harrison of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Mildred Ashburn of Falston, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Annick Harrison of San Francisco,  Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Barry Brick of Hartwick; a son, Roy Harrison of Mount Vision; four grandchildren, Tedi Kay Kohinke of Lewes, Del., Eddie Kohinke of Moab, Utah, Jenny Ashburn of Bloomington, Ind., and Christopher Ashburn of Indiana; a brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Wilma Harrison of Mount Vision; and a sister-in-law, Vivian Harrison of Mount Vision. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Paul is predeceased by his brother, Ford Harrison. He will be fondly remembered by his church family.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 9, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the Mount Vision United Methodist Church. The Rev. Roger G. Yoder, pastor of the Mount Vision United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Burial will follow at the Mount Vision Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to the church after the burial for refreshments with Paul's family.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Thursday, July 8, 1999, from 7-9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the Mount Vision United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 576, Mount Vision, N.Y. 13810.

Paul's family would like to express their appreciation for the support of Catskill Area Hospice and for making Paul's last days comfortable. The family also wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Egal and the nursing staff at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital during Paul's recent hospitalizations. Their compassion and care were invaluable to Paul and his family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Helen W. Johnson
LOWER ALLEN TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Helen W. Johnson, 99, of Bethany Village, Lower Allen Township, died Tuesday in the village.

Mrs.  Johnson was born July 29, 1899, in Oneonta.

She was a retired librarian from Briarcliff Junior College. She was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, 1922, and Syracuse Universty, Library School, 1948.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mechanicsburg and the Philanthropic Educational Organization.

She did volunteer work in the library at Bethany Village and was active in craft work at Bethany. She also had a love for music, which she taught.

She was the widow of M.D. Johnson. Surviving are two sisters, Margaret L. Heisley of Lemoyne, Pa., and Mary E. Austin of Ashville, N.C., and 12 nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Marysville, Pa.

Arrangements are being handled by the Shalonis Funeral Home, Marysville.

Mimi A. Kiel
OTEGO — Mrs. Mimi A. Kiel, 94, of Otego, died Wednesday morning, June 30, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 27, 1904, in Germany, the daughter of August and Anna (Muller) Kasten.

She married Fred. W. Kiel Sr. on June 3, 1930, in Newark, N.J. Fred died Sept. 10, 1991.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anita and James Vroman of Otego; a son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Betty Kiel of Otego; a sister, Hemina Schwinerman of Germany; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mimi was predeceased by four sisters and two brothers.

At her request, Mimi was cremated at the Hillington Crematory in Morris. Funeral and burial services will be held at the convenience of her family.

Alton T. Larson
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mr. Alton T. Larson, 82, of Richfield Springs and Mesa, Ariz., died Monday, July 5, 1999, at The Residence, town of Richfield.

He was born June 4, 1917, in Grafton, N.D., the son of Theodore and Mary Louise (Donnelly) Larson.

Mr. Larson was married in Las Vegas, Nev., to Alta Winnona Springett on April 27, 1996.

Mr. Larson was a native of Grafton, N.D., where he owned and operated a large potato ranch. In later life he lived at Mesa, Ariz., where he also owned and operated properties in Arizona.

After his marriage to Alta, the couple established a summer residence at Canadarago Lake, town of Richfield, Otsego County.

Mr. Larson is survived by his wife Alta D. Larson of Richfield Springs and Mesa, Ariz.; three nephews, Terry and Gary Larson of Mesa, Ariz., and Theodore Larson of Pine Top, Ariz.; two grandnieces, Brandi and Amber Larson, both of Arizona; two stepsons, Eugene and Rose-Mary Holbrook of West Oneonta and C. Robert Holbrook of West Oneonta; eight stepgrandchildren, Ceylon Holbrook and Mark Holbrook, both of West Oneonta, Mrs. Stephen (Sherry) ImBasciano of Wells Bridge, Mrs. James (Yvonne) Kenick of Oneonta, Teresa Holbrook of Oneonta, Mrs. Joseph (Mary-Holbrook) ImBasciano of Syracuse, Mrs. Kenneth (Regina-Holbrook) Fallot of Vestal and Mr. Michael and his wife, Heather Holbrook, of Wilmington, N.C.; five stepgreat-grandchildren, Joseph ImBasciano, Kelly Fallot, Brian Fallot, Michelle Holbrook and Patricia Kenick.

Also surviving are two stepdaughters, Peggy Lou Fay and Corine Kelley; and stepnephews, Gene Kelley and Sean Kelley.

Mr. Larson was predeceased by his parents, as well as his only brother, Lauren Larson, and a grand-nephew, "Teddy" Larson.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 9, 1999, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

The Rev. Andrea  White, pastoral care coordinator of Catskill Area Hospice, will officiate.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Mr. Larson's family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta on Thursday, July 8, from 7-9 p.m. when those who wish may call at the funeral home.

Generoso LaSalvia Jr.
UNADILLA — Mr. Generoso LaSalvia Jr., 39, of Ideuma Road, died Sunday afternoon at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Baltimore, Md., after a long illness while waiting for a lung transplant.

Mr. LaSalvia was born in Mount Pleasant and reared in New Rochelle. The family moved to Middleburgh where he was educated. He served in the United States Navy from 1977 to 1981, in San Diego attaining the rank of ensign where he was an outboard marine mechanic. He also served in the Navy Reserves from 1981 to 1983 as well as the Army Reserves from 1985 to 1986. Mr. LaSalvia graduated top in his class at Ohio Diesel Technical Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. He worked for Industrial Engine Parts in Cleveland for three years of service. He was a service technician for Tennant Co., in Minneapolis, Minn., for the last nine years.

Mr. LaSalvia was an organ and tissue donor as well as a member of the NRA and of the Roman Catholic faith.

He was husband of Lori Merkel LaSalvia, whom he married Aug. 25, 1984. Survivors include two sons, Generoso LaSalvia III and Leo Anthony LaSalvia both of Unadilla; his mother, Anna M. Hock of Sidney; and a sister, Mrs. Lauretta Power of East Stroudburg, Pa.

Funeral services will be Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. from the N. Rossi and Sons Funeral Home, Union at N. Jay Streets.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.

The family requests in lieu of charitable contributions that individuals give the gift of life to others by signing their organ donation cards.

R. Marie Miller
PORTLANDVILLE — Mrs. R. Marie Miller, 87, of Portlandville, died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born June 5, 1912, in Prattsville, the daughter of Edwin and Ada D. (Jones) Rappleyea.

Marie had worked for the Oneonta Dress Co. and several others over the years. She retired from the Portlandville post office in 1992 where she had been a postal clerk. Marie was a member of the Portlandville United Methodist Church, Portlandville.

She is survived by two daughters, Ms. Eleanor Pynenburg of Columbus, Ga., and Ms. Joan M. Carley of Milford; and six grandchildren, Karen Pynenburg, Alfons Pynenburg III and his wife, Robin, Marcus Pynenburg, Paul E. Carley III and his wife, Stephanie, Nicole Carley and her friend Matthew Lubbers and Erica Carley. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Ryan and Alec Pynenburg, Maci Tirrel, Tanner Carley, Alexander Kiser and Carly Ten Eyck, as well as one niece, Laura Foster.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

The Ref. Jeff Hale, pastor of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Wednesday, July 7, 1999, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to Portlandville United Methodist Church, Portlandville, in memory of R. Marie Miller.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Dorothy E. Rexroad
WORCESTER — Dorothy E. Rexroad, 86, formerly of Westford and Worcester died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at The Meadows.

She was born March 12, 1913, in Worcester, the daughter of Arthur and Ruth (Wright) McClintock.

She married James E. Rexroad on Oct. 7, 1935, in Wellsburg, W.Va. He died in 1972.

Dorothy lived in Selkirk for many years. Upon retiring, she moved back to Worcester.

She was a registered nurse, employed at the Albany Medical Center as a nursing supervisor. She retired in 1968.

She was a member of the Westford United Methodist Church, a member of the United Methodist Women and the Worcester Women's Club. She was a graduate of the Westford Union School and a graduate of the Syracuse Memorial Hospital School of Nursing on Sept. 27, 1934.

She is survived by two sisters, Nellie Bush of Westford and Georgia Sawyer of Worcester; and two sisters-in-law, Helen McClintock of Worcester and Margaret Diehl of  Pennsylvania.

She is predeceased by her brother, Walter McClintock.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friay, July 9, 1999, at the Westford United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday evening at the Skinner Funeral Chapel, Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Westford United Methodist Church.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester.

Rex Rutherford
ONEONTA — Rex Rutherford, 91, died Monday afternoon, July 5, 1999, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

He was born April 9, 1908, in Sidney, the son of Dire and Letha May Rutherford.

Rex married Margaret Miner on June 15, 1928. They were married for 28 years until her death on April 18, 1957.

Rex operated his own logging company for many years. He sold his company and went to work for Preston Motors as an auto mechanic. Rex loved the outdoors, gardening and fishing.

He is survived by three cousins, Wendell Boggs, Renwick Boggs and Margaret Craig, all of Oneonta, and a special friend, Evaline Schultheis of Laurens.

At Rex's request, there will be no funeral services. He will be cremated at Hillington Crematory in Morris and his cremains will be buried on his family's plot in Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mabel A. Stevens
COOPERSTOWN — Mabel A. Stevens, 92, of Cooperstown, died Sunday, July 4, 1999 at the Meadows.

Mabel was born Jan. 2, 1907, in Altoona, Pa., a daughter of Louis H. and Alice M. (Walters) Glass.

Mabel attended two years of college after graduating from high school in Altoona. She married Harold P. Stevens (who predeceased her in 1955) on Oct. 24, 1930, in Meshoppen, Pa.

Mabel will be remembered for working at Church and Scott as a clerk for 20 years.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Charles Cade of Alhambra,  Calif.; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Mary Stevens of Walton; six grandchildren, Christy Morgan and her husband, John, of Colchester, Vt., Eric Stevens and his wife, Debbie, of Schenevus, Brad Stevens and his wife, Brenda, of Fair Haven, Vt., Matthew Cade of Alhambra,  Calif., David Bridger of Cooperstown and Steven Bridger and his wife, Cheryl, of Otego; and a son-in-law, Robert Moore of Cooperstown.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Gretchen Moore.

A graveside service will be Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at 2 p.m. in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery with Rev. Paul Cronin, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Walton, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
