Jessie E. Conine
DELHI — Jessie E. Conine, 92, of Delhi died Friday, July 9, 1999, at the home of her daughter in Spragueville.

She was born July 19, 1906, in Treadwell, the daughter of Harrison and Sarrah (Dibble) Gladstone.

She married H. Arnold Conine on Sept. 1, 1925, in Prattsville. He died on June 21, 1978.

Jessie was a homemaker in her own home for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Treadwell United Methodist Church, a former member of the Prattsville United Methodist Church and the Jewett Grange.

Jessie is survived by two daughters, Lillian C. Kinney of Spragueville and Pauline C. Osborn of Delhi; a daughter-in-law, Florence Conine of Prattsville; and a half-brother, Donald Gladstone of West Henrietta; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, along with many foster grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were all very dear to Jessie's heart.

She was predeceased by a son, Everett Conine of Prattsville; three brothers, Wendell Gladstone of Tuscon, Ariz., Arthur Gladstone of Albany and Kenneth Gladstone of Mahwah, N.J.; and a half-brother, Herbert Gladstone of Otego.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the Treadwell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ashland. Following the committal service, a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. in the Prattsville Methodist Church with the Rev. Ellen Oliveto, officiating.

There will be no public calling hours at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of  Jefferson County, 425  Washington St., Watertown, N.Y. 13601 or the Treadwell Methodist or Prattsville Methodist Churches.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Viola M. Dillenbeck
SIDNEY — Viola M. Dillenbeck, 61, of 151  Johnson Circle, Sidney died Friday evening, July 9, 1999, at her home.

She was born June 16, 1938, in Downsville, the daughter of Willis and Aretta (Ferguson) Brown.

She was married to John C. Dillenbeck, March 26, 1967, in Otego.

Viola has been a resident of Sidney for many years and was a former employee of Amphenol Corp. in Sidney.

She was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church, Women of the Moose Chapter No. 502, Sidney and the Women's Auxiliary of Joyce-Bell Post No. 578 American Legion, Unadilla.

Viola is survived by her husband, John C. Dillenbeck of Sidney; a daughter, Roxanne E. Richardson of Sidney; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Howard and Debra Butler of Guilford and James D. Butler of Bainbridge; six brothers, Robert Brown of Ferndale, Charles Brown of Oneonta, Ernest Brown of Norwich, LeRoy Brown of Florida, George Brown of Little Falls and Willis Ferguson of Oneonta; five sisters, Doris Chase of Cresent City, Fla., Bessie Lollimano of Little Falls, Judy Morgan of Norwich, Laura Jane Brown of Syracuse and Bertha L. Ferguson of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Tracie Ferrara, Shane Butler, Cassandra Button, Kelly Goff and Dallas Butler; also an aunt; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 112 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday, July 13, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, the Sidney Emergency Squad or the Sidney United Methodist Church.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., Unadilla.

Violet Wiest Hanson
LARGO, Fla. — Violet Wiest Hanson of Largo, Fla., died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at her home in Largo, Fla.

The family requests that donations made in her memory be made to the Hospice of the Florida Sun Coast, 300 East Bay Dr., Largo, Fla. 33770-3770.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Brian Christopher Knapp
WALTON — Brian Christopher Knapp, 27, died Friday afternoon, July 9, 1999, in Franklin.

He was born May 4, 1972, in Sidney, the son of Joseph and Ruth (Earl) Knapp.

He married Tammy Qucik.

Brian was a parishioner of St. James Episcopal Church of Oneonta and a 1990 graduate of Unatego High School.

Brian is survived by his wife, Tammy Knapp, and two sons, Justin and Joshua Knapp of Walton; his parents, Joe and Ruth Knapp; and his grandparents, James C. and Marilynn Earl, all of Unadilla; a brother, Casey Knapp of Oneonta; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service to celebrate the life of Brian Christopher Knapp with the Holy Eucharist to be offered afterward at St. James Episcopal Church, 305 Main St., Oneonta, will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 1999, with the Rev. Canon Mark R. Cole officiating. Brian will be cremated at Hillington Crematory and his cremains will be entombed in the columbarium at St. James Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends in the Great Hall at St. James Episcopal Church following the services.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta and Otego.

Alice Schermerhorn
NEW BERLIN — Alice Schermerhorn, 94, of New Berlin died Thursday, July 8, 1999, in Norwich.

She was born Oct. 2, 1904, in Deposit, the daughter of Frank and Cora (Richardson) Risedorph.

She married Louis Schermerhorn on Sept. 6, 1924, in Elbridge. He died Dec. 7, 1989.

She spent her childhood in South Edmeston and attended the Park School in South Edmeston.

She was a volunteer of the Chase Hospital and Nursing Home in New Berlin. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin.

She loved hunting, fishing, hiking, her house on Route 8 and her flower garden.

She was predeceased by one brother, Kenneth Risedorph, and one nephew, Richard Schermerhorn.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles  Taylor of the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New Berlin, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Wilma A. Sloat
DELHI — Wilma A. Sloat, 86, of Delhi died March 15, 1999, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born June 4, 1912, the daughter of Boman and Frances (Aldrich) Sloat.

A resident of Delhi all her life, she was employed in domestic service in the Delhi area. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.

A funeral service will take place on Thursday, July 15, 1999, at 10 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Delhi with Fr. Paul Hartt, officiating. Burial will take place in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Arrangements are with MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Elfrieda Sprague
NORTH MERRICK — Elfrieda Sprague, 66, of North Merrick died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at the Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood, N.J.

She was born April 19, 1933, in Brooklyn, the daughter of William Simmen and Elsa Doebele.

She worked as a designer of tickets for Ticketcraft, Uniondale.

Elfrieda is survived by her five daughters, Nancy Strich, Debra Cronau, Louise Mueller, Edith Cooper and Karen Mondore; her stepmother, Mae Simmen; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, July 18, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Graveside Oliverea Cemetery, Oliverea, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Burial will be in the Oliverea Cemetery, Oliverea.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Edward F. Christman
MIDDLEFIELD — Edward Frank Christman, 71, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at his home in Middlefield after a long and valiant battle with C.O.P.D.

He was born in Albany on Oct. 24, 1927, the son of Alexander Sr. and Helen (Moran) Christman.

As an infant, his family moved to the area where he spent his growing up years. He attended school at the one-room schoolhouse in Middlefield and also Cherry Valley Central School.

Edward entered the service in 1945, serving as an Army M.P. in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1949. After his discharge, he returned to live at his family home which, at present, is third-generation owned.

He married Phyllis Bryant on April 12, 1950, at the Baptist Church in Westville.

He was a carpenter and mechanic by trade and one of his many talents was working around old motors and building things. His greatest joy was his family. He had a great love of the outdoors and was an avid gardener. Even now, the garden he planned is growing as a tribute to what he loved to do.

Edward is survived by his wife of 49 years, Phyllis; four daughters, Tim and Pam (Christman) Hotaling of Middlefield, George and Dale (Christman) Webster of South Valley, Tom and Merri (Christman-Hendricks) Darling of Middlefield and Elizabeth Christman of Middlefield; two sons, Alan and Melinda (Bridger) Christman of Carthage and Bruce Christman of Hartwick. He is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Don Morris of Chestertown and a brother and sister-in-law, James and June Christman of Cooperstown; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Theresa Christman (Mrs. Alexander Christman Jr.) and Janet Christman (Mrs. John Christman) of Schenectady.

He was predeceased by his parents; an infant son, Alexander Frank Christman; his brothers, John and Alexander Jr.; a sister, Emily Eckler; and three granddaughters, Melissa and Dawn Webster and Megan Hotaling.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, July 14, 1999, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Thursday, July 15, 1999, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ron Fralick, pastor of the Middlefield Church, presiding.

Following cremation, burial will be at the convenience of the family at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Theodore R. Whispell
HOBART — Theodore R. Whispell, 88, of Hobart, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at home.

He was born Aug. 24, 1910, in Shady, the son of William and Harriet (Kellerhouse) Whispell.

He was married to the late Edith D. (Smith) Whispell on Oct. 15, 1932; she passed away June 16, 1981.

Mr. Whispell was employed at E.L. Foote & Son in Hobart; for the town of Stamford in the Highway Department as a truck driver; and for the Green Thumb of Hobart. He was a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church.

Mr. Whispell is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Helen Havrish of  Jefferson, and Miss Shirley Whispell and Mrs. Betty Mott, both of Hobart; a son, Clarence Whispell of Hobart; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren;

A daughter, Frances Whispell, predeceased him.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, July 15, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Hobart United Methodist Church with Pastor Elliot Oakes officiating. Calling hours will be Wednesday, July 14, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will follow the service at Locust Hill Cemetery.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hobart Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Helen B. McGarry
JEFFERSON — Helen B. McGarry, 79, of Moxley Street Road,  Jefferson, died Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

She was born Oct. 7, 1919, in Baltimore, Md., the daughter of Weiser Gland and Mary Lucille (Kinneman) Bates.

She was married to Sherrell E. Overlander and James McGarry, who have both predeceased her.

Helen graduated from York High School in York, Pa. She lived in  Jefferson for the past 14 years, moving there from the Albany area where she had lived for many years. She worked for Huyck Felt Co. in Rensselaer. Helen was a member of the Calvary Full Gospel Fellowship in  Jefferson and the  Jefferson Senior Citizens.

Helen is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Carla Overlander of Cornelius, N.C., and Sherrell and Audrey Overlander of Alvin, Ill.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary E. and Peter Cross of York, Pa.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Carol Bates of Philadelphia, Pa.; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, July 16, 1999, at the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery, at  Jefferson with the Rev. Werner VanLooy, pastor of the Calvary Full Gospel Fellowship in  Jefferson, officiating.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 West Main St., Stamford, at their convenience on Thursday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance between 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Helen's memory to the Calvary Full Gospel Fellowship, Moxley Street Road,  Jefferson, N.Y. 12093.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Norman C. Bennett
BOKEELIA, Fla. — Norman C. Bennett, 86, of Bokeelia, Fla., died unexpectedly Friday, July 9, 1999, at his home.

He was born March 18, 1913, in Oswego, N.Y., the son of Norman and Blanche (Driggs) Bennett.

He was married to Martha Newcott on June 29, 1942, in Bainbridge, N.Y. Mrs. Bennett died Aug. 9, 1988.

He has been a resident of the Tri-Town area for many years, a resident of Bokeelia, Fla., for the last eight years and a retired employee of Amphenol Corp. in Sidney, N.Y.

He was a member of the Pine Island Methodist Church, Sidney Center, United Methodist Church and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local No. 1529 in Sidney, N.Y.

Mr. Bennett is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Bennett of Unadilla, N.Y., and Ross and Lesilie Bennett of Charlottesville, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and Robert Truman of Sidney, N.Y., and Marlene and James LaFever of Unadilla, N.Y.; four sisters, Beatrice Gibbs of Richland, N.Y., Leatrice Saunders of Unadilla, N.Y., Lona Kitchen of Tapango,  Calif., and Norma  Jackson of Sidney, N.Y.; a brother, Aaden Bennett of Bedford,  Texas; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Zelphia and Olive; and three brothers, Oland, Edson and Horace.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 17, 1999, at Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center, N.Y.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., Unadilla, N.Y.

Karl Felber
STAMFORD — Karl Felber, 78, of 1 Crescent Ave., Stamford, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 1, 1920, in Munich, Germany, the son of Franz and Magdalena (Dannhofer) Felber.

He married Karolina Schmid on Oct. 20, 1951, in Germany.

In 1953, Karl moved to Stamford from Munich, Germany. For many years he was employed at the Parnett Packing Co. in Bloomville and the Greendell Packing Co. in Prattsville. He was also a self-employed carpenter. In Karl's later years he worked at the NAPA Auto Parts store in Stamford.

Karl is survived by his wife, Karolina Felber of Stamford; a son and daughter-in-law, Frederick and Cathy Felber of West Palm Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Max and his wife, Kirstin Felber, of Dallas,  Texas, and Karolina and her husband, Steven Bartek, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; great-grandchildren, David and Marshall Felber of Dallas,  Texas; a sister, Maria McGee of Tampa, Fla.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Hermine and Rolla Irwin of Binghamton; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 16, 1999, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, with Thomas Murphy, relative of the deceased, presiding.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. on Friday.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made in Karl's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Dorothy M. Diotte
BURLINGTON GREEN — Dorothy M. Diotte, 88, of Burlington Green, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born Aug. 7, 1910, in Pittsfield, the daughter of Adolph and Elizabeth (Wakeley) Van Warner.

She was married to Albert Diotte. He predeceased her on March 26, 1977.

Dorothy was a member of the Senior Citizens, and enjoyed traveling. She will be remembered by many as the owner and proprietor of the Burlington General Store for many years.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Stewart Chase of Norwich, Ruth Schuckert of Idaho, Janet Dunckel of Richfield Springs, Joan Brunner of New Jersey and David Diotte of Schenevus; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her sisters, Beatrice Leach of New Berlin, Betty Watson of Stamford, and Beverly Corcoran of Kansas; and her brother, Dick Van Warner of Moravia.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Claude, Robert, Roy and Kenneth Van Warner; and her sister Lynne Yurenka.

Graveside committal services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, July 17, 1999, at Burlington Green Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.
