Marjory L. Ward
HARTWICK — Marjory L. Ward, 89, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare.

Marjory was born at the Ward Homestead in Hartwick on May 7, 1910, a daughter of David W. and Lela (Sternberg) Ward.

Marjory graduated from Hartwick High School in 1928, and later in life graduated from the Utica School of Beauty Culture in 1965. She was a lifelong resident of the local area and retired from Bassett Healthcare as a geriatric technician. She spent her spare time gardening, fishing and hooking rugs.

Marjory is survived by a sister, Marian E. Soloweigh of Scotia; a niece, Brenda Adams of Scotia; and a nephew, Roland Clark of  Washington, D.C.

A graveside service will be Friday, July 16, 1999, at 3:30 p.m. at the Hartwick Cemetery with the Rev. John C. Young officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Gunnar A. Anderson
SCHENEVUS — Gunnar A. Anderson, 89, of Schenevus, died Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 23, 1909, in Kariskrona, Sweden, the son of Albert Olson and Klara Anderson.

He married Beulah Muelbe on April 8, 1962, in Valley Stream.

Gunnar has lived in Schenevus for the past 26 years. He was previously from Valley Stream and Oceanside.

He was a general foreman for Triangle Sheet Metal Works in New York City, where he belonged to the Local Union 28 Sheet Metal Workers.

Gunnar was a longtime member of the Valley Stream Fire Department Engine Co. No. 4 and the Valley Stream Masonic Lodge No. 1043.

Gunnar is survived by his wife, Beulah Anderson of Schenevus; three daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Fred Limbach of East Northport, Arline and John Schuck of Westford and Linda and John Kolb of Rockville Centre; one son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Arlyn Anderson of Schenevus; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, Gustav Olson, and one sister, Elna Hamilin.

Friends may call at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St. in Schenevus on Thursday, July 15, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. until the funeral service time at 8 p.m. with the Rev. William Robert Thompson, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Schenevus, officiating. A Masonic funeral service will follow at 8:30 p.m. Burial will take place 10 a.m., Friday, July 16, 1999, at the Schenevus Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Gunnar to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Doris B. Bronson
WALTON — Doris B. Bronson, 73, a lifelong resident of Walton and winter resident of North Fort Myers, Fla., died Wednesday morning, July 14, 1999, at the home of her daughter, Karen, in Delhi.

She was born on Aug. 1, 1925, to Roderick and Irene (Miner) Bartlett in Walton.

She married Richard Hall on July 8, 1944, who predeceased her in 1965. She married Bruce E. Bronson on Feb. 11, 1968, in Masonville, who also predeceased her, on Feb. 7, 1996.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Walton and the Walton B.P.W. She was a bookkeeper for Bronson-Smith Motors in Walton, retiring in 1977.

Doris is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Donald Chapman of Hancock and Karen and David Walkin of Delhi; grandchildren, Kendra and Stan Spangenberg Jr., Kari Smith, Nicole and Neal Figary, and David C.  Schmidt Jr.; a great-grandchild, Evan Spangenberg; a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Eunice Bartlett of Walton; and also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 16, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, with the Rev. Barbara Hanstine, rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Deposit, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., Funeral Home, Walton.

Muriel E. Rockwell
MORRIS — Muriel E. Rockwell, 81, of Morris and formerly of Edmeston and Norwich, died Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at the Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass.

She was born in Augusta on Dec. 7, 1917, the daughter of Lewis and Lillie (Munsell) Griffiths.

She was married to LeRoy Rockwell on July 29, 1936, in Oneida. He died Aug. 25, 1996.

She had been employed by the Simmons Precision of Norwich for many years.

She was a member of the Columbus Community Church for several years.

Muriel is survived by her children, Lester Rockwell and his wife, Hazel, of Madison, Thomas Rockwell of Madison and his companion, Carol Jordon, of Oriskany Falls, Carlton Rockwell of Edmeston, David Rockwell and his wife, Laurie, of Morris, Naureen Perkins and her husband, Douglas, of East Chatham and Elizabeth (Betty) Watson and her husband, DK, of Yakima, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alberta Edick of Vernon and Reba Grems of Floyd; and her loving dog, Appey.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Christopher P. Rockwell.

Viewing and funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Those who wish may donate to the Morris Emergency Squad in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Kenneth Ostrander
MOUNT UPTON — Kenneth E. Ostrander, 80, of River Road, Mount Upton, passed away Wednesday evening, July 14, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born March 31, 1919, in the town of Unadilla. Ken was the son of the late Walter and Ruth Kreuger Ostrander.

On April 14, 1940, he married Nedra Hyatt in Unadilla.

Mr. Ostrander was a machinist for the Amphenol Corp., Sidney, for more than 39 years. He retired in 1986.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose 277, Sidney, honorary member of the Borden Hose Company, Mount Upton Fire Department and the I.A.M. and A.W. Local 1529 Sidney.

Mr. Ostrander is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mrs. Nedra Ostrander of Mount Upton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Vikki Ostrander of Unadilla and Edward and Gail Ostrander of Unadilla; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Arnold Harris of Mount Upton; three brothers, Howard Ostrander of Mount Upton, Donald Ostrander of Florida and Carroll Ostrander of Mount Upton; three sisters, Pauline Partridge of Afton, Luella Puffer of Unadilla and Linda Pope of Mount Upton; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral chapel from noon Sunday until time of services at 2 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Borden Hose Co., Mount Upton Fire Department, Mount Upton, N.Y. 13809 or to the East Guilford Presbyterian Church, if desired.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Robert M. Gorence
COOPERSTOWN — Robert Martin Gorence, 81, of Cooperstown, passed away at The Meadows, Wednesday evening, July 14, 1999.

He was the son of Louis and Agnes (Friend) Gorence.

He was born May 25, 1918, in Johnstown, Pa.

Robert has been a resident of Cooperstown since he was 7 years old. He attended Cooperstown High School and was a communicant of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church.

On Oct. 17, 1954, he married Rose M. DeMay in Cooperstown.

For many years, Robert was employed by the Leatherstocking Corp. as groundskeeper of the Leatherstocking Golf Course.

Bob enjoyed gardening, golfing, hunting and fishing and was a member of the Native Sons of Cooperstown as well as a 50-year member of the Cooperstown Fire Department No. 5 Hook and Ladder.

Robert is survived by his wife, Rose, at home; one daughter and son-in-law, Christina and David Karpowich, and a grandson, John Robert Karpowich, all of Cooperstown; a sister, Mary Crain of Portlandville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Two brothers, John and Frank, predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, July 17, 1999, at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church with Fr. John R. Roos officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Index. Calling hours will be held on Friday evening, July 16, 1999, from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute to the Cooperstown Fire Department, 24 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Doris B. Bronson
WALTON — Doris B. Bronson, 73, a lifelong resident of Walton and winter resident of North Fort Myers, Fla., died Wednesday morning, July 14, 1999, at the home of her daughter, Karen, in Delhi.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 16, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, with the Rev. Julius J. Yaro
HOBART — Julius J. Yaro, 77, died Wednesday, July 14, 1999, after a short illness at the Sheffield House, Hobart.

Julius was born in Jacobs Creek, Pa. He served in the United States Army Signal Corps in World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Julius was an area resident for 30 years, relocating from New York City.

He was a member of the Oneonta American Legion, and the VFW, as well as an avid hunter, fisherman and baseball fan.

He was predeceased by his son Julius Jr. in November 1997.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth McPhail of Stamford; three grandchildren; and one great-granchild.

Friends may call Friday, July 16, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St., (corner of Liberty Street), Stamford.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 17, at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow immediately at the Stamford Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to William A. Tari Funeral Home, Stamford.

Anna Grace Beers
OTEGO — Mrs. Anna Grace Beers, 94, of Otego died Saturday evening, July 17, 1999, at the home of her daughter, Letha in West Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 10, 1904, in Colesville, the daughter of William Riley and Edna (Hinman) Pearsall.

She married Jesse Beers. Mr. Beers died in 1936.

Anna was a home health-care aide and took care of the elderly in their homes for many years.

She attended the Plymouth Church. She enjoyed traveling, cooking for others, puzzles, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and a great-great-grandmother, who will be greatly missed by all.

Anna is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Letha and Clifford Hulbert of West Oneonta and Pauline and Ivan Peck of Albion; one son and daughter-in-law, Earl and Doris Beers of Milford; one sister, Louise Friedel of West Oneonta; 14 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; 34 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Anna was predeceased by four sisters, one grandson, one great-granddaughter, and one niece.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. Burial will be in Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 20, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. when those who wish may call.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049 in loving memory of Anna Grace Beers.

Isabel M. Hartwell
STAMFORD — Isabel M. Hartwell, 76, of Spring Hill, Fla. and formerly of Shew Hollow Road, Stamford died July 6, 1999, at her residence in Spring Hill, Fla.

She was born July 16, 1922, in North Blenheim, the daughter of Grant and Grace (Clum) Mattice. She married Donald A. Hartwell on Oct. 12, 1940.

Isabel was employed at Greendell Packing Co., in Prattsville and Audiosears in Stamford. She had lived on Shew Hollow Road from the time she was married until she moved to Spring Hill in 1998.

She is survived by her husband, Donald A. Hartwell Sr. of Spring Hill, Fla.; a son, Donald A. Hartwell Jr. of Hinesville, Ga.; a daughter, Nancy G. Haas of Spring Hill, Fla.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Esther Hartwell, Mabel Hedges, Jenny Conro of Stamford and Josephine Haslun of Southbury, Conn. and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at the Hartwell family plot at Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson, the Rev. Waylen Bray, pastor of the Stamford Baptist Church, will be officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Charles E. Hilsinger
ONEONTA — Charles E. Hilsinger, 93, of Oneonta died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at his residence.

He was born May 1, 1906, in Sherburne, the son of Albert J. and Susie Mae (Egan) Hilsinger.

He was first married to Ethel Burton, who died on Aug. 3, 1941. On Nov. 18, 1967, he married Frances (Phillips) Muckle.

For many years, Charlie was a lineman in electrical construction. He was primarily affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers No. 1249, in which he was still a member. Prior to that he was both a paid and call fireman with the City of Oneonta.

He was also a member of the Oneonta Brotherhood of Protective Order Of Elks No. 1312.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Frances Hilsinger of Oneonta; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Nancy Hilsinger of Littleton, Mass.; three stepdaughters, Grace Lawlor of St. James, Betty Repp of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Janet Muckle of Oneonta; a stepson, Walter Muckle of New Jersey. He is also survived by a half sister, Jean Peavey of Montgomery, Ala., along with several nieces, nephews and one cousin, Francis Hilsinger of Sherburne.

A funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Park Cemetery, Hudson.

Friends may call Monday one hour prior to service time at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Dorothy Hopkins
GILBERTSVILLE — Dorothy Hopkins, 74, of 26 Spring St., Gilbertsville died Friday, July 16, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born in Morris on Aug. 16, 1924, the daughter of Louis K. and Sarah Thelma (Southern) Myers.

She married Milo Hopkins on April 23, 1946, at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris.

Dorothy graduated from Morris Central School and was a lifelong resident of Morris and Gilbertsville.

She was employed by the Wilber National Bank of Morris for 14 years. Upon retirement, she continued to work for Wilber Bank in the summertime.

She was a past matron of the Eastern Star, and in her leisure time she was an avid reader, gardener and knitter.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Milo of Gilbertsville; one son, Bruce Hopkins and his wife, Cheryl of Oneonta; one granddaughter, Nicole Hopkins of Brooklyn; one sister, Jeanne Quintin and her husband, Eugene of Morris; one aunt, Rachel Gould of New Berlin; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Douglas Myers.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at the Christ Episcopal Church in Gilbertsville at 4:30 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Frye, officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 tonight at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, when the family will be in attendance.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the American Heart Foundation or the charity of one's choice, in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Dorothy B. Johnson
JEFFERSON — Dorothy B. Johnson, 72, of Veley Road,  Jefferson, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

She was born Feb. 21, 1927, in New York City, the daughter of Samuel and Louise (Johnson)  Jefferson.

Dorothy was married to Roy J.  Johnson on April 1, 1949, in New York City. Roy died March 15, 1986.

She has lived in  Jefferson for the past 40 years, moving from New York City. Dorothy was a member of the  Jefferson Baptist Church and the  Jefferson Senior Citizens.

Dorothy is survived by her mother, Louise Church of Mount Kisco; daughters, Beverly Aikens and Delores Morris of  Jefferson, and Christine Medley of New York City; grandchildren, Timothy, Janee, Roy, Stephanie, Kenny, Kim and Jureya; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary  Jones of the Bronx and Elaine Stanley of Mount Kisco; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dorothy was predeceased by a daughter, Roaslind, and a son, Timothy.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 1999, at the  Jefferson Baptist Church with the Rev. Don DeGarmo, pastor, officiating. The burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford at their convenience Wednesday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance on Wednesday between 7 and 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Dorothy's memory to either the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the  Jefferson Rescue Squad,  Jefferson, N.Y. 12093.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.
