Arthur M. Murphy
UNADILLA — Arthur M. Murphy, 93, of R.D. No. 2, Unadilla died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 30, 1905, in Watertown, Conn., the son of Samuel and Fannie (Calhoun) Murphy.

He was married to Marjorie Douglas on Dec. 23, 1932, in Hartwick. Mrs. Murphy died Nov. 21, 1974.

Mr. Murphy was a self-employed logger in his early years, owned and operated a dairy farm in Gilbertsville, for many years, and later owned and operated a dairy farm in Treadwell.

He was a former board member of the Otsego County Fair Association and a former member of the Butternut Valley Grange.

Arthur is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy J. and William Murphy of Morris, Lucy A. and Wlater Upham of Westmoreland and Kathleen E. and Walter Schober of Hillsdale; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Douglas A. and Marion Murphy of Oneonta, Thomas S. Murphy of Unadilla and Marvin B. Murphy of Spring Hill, Fla.; two sisters, Mildred Wightman of Bolivar, Mo. and Fannie M. Culver of Newfane; also 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Leonard, Howard, Walter, Ralph, Daniel and Robert Murphy. He was also predeceased by a sister, Laura Hodges.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 112 Main St., Unadilla with the Rev. Joseph A. Fiske of Morris officiating.

Burial will be in Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Tuesday, July 20, at their convenience and the family will be in attendance Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad or to a charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Theta E. Neilsen
NEW BERLIN — Theta E. Neilsen, 77, of New Berlin died Saturday, July 17, 1999, in New Berlin.

She was born June 15, 1922, in Saffordville, Kan., the daughter of Noble and Alfa (Leith) Easter.

She married Sewell Neilsen on April 18, 1943. He survives.

She spent her childhood in Saffordville, Kan. She was a graduate of the local Saffordville, Kan. High School.

Theta is survived by her children, Daniel Neilsen of New Berlin, Nancy Woodward of Mesquite,  Texas and Patricia Brockway of West Oneonta; five grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin. Interment will be in Columbus Corners Cemetery, town of Columbus.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Leona I. Sherman
MASONVILLE — Leona I. Sherman, 86, of Route 206 East, formerly of Norwich and Bainbridge, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 17, 1999, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.

She was born in North Sanford on July 17, 1913. Leona was the daughter of Herbert and Lucinda Wayman Preston.

On May 24, 1932, in North Sanford, she married Kenneth Sherman, who passed away in February of 1959. Leona and her husband ran a dairy farm for more than 30 years. She had been a resident of Bainbridge for many years before moving to Norwich, and then to Masonville, where she lived with her daughter.

Leona is survived by five daughters, Katherine Miller-Huter of Harris, Patricia Sherman of Livingston Manor, Gloria Smith-Lewis of Polk City, Fla., Dolores Knapp of Masonville and Velna Planere of Oxford. She is also survived by her two sisters, Gladys Murray of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Edith Pine of South Cairo; and by many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Leona was predeceased by three daughters, Iona Keefe, May Louise Yadlosky and Sharon Barnes.

Funeral services for Leona will be held on Wednesay, July 21, 1999, at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Witherow, pastor of the Canasawacta Valley Free Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery of Bainbridge. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The family has asked that memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association, Mid-State, New York Region, 26 South  Washington St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13903.

Stuart W. Harrington
ONEONTA — Stuart W. "Bud" Harrington, 84, of Oneonta, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Dec. 4, 1914, in Hartwick, the son of Walter B. and Mercy B. (Tamsett) Harrington.

He married Margaret "Peg" Brown on March 1, 1939. She died on Aug. 30, 1993.

Bud retired in 1974, after 35 years with Sears in Oneonta.

He was one of the four founding fathers of Oneonta Little League, for which he remained active for many years serving as both president and coach. A true family man, Bud showed his support to his children and grandchildren by involving himself in all their life endeavors.

Stuart is survived by his children, Patricia Fell of Endicott, Judie Randall of Binghamton, Tom Harrington of Oneonta and Eileen "Beany" Brown of Oneonta; a special niece, Kathryn Himes of Laurens; seven grandchildren, Kathryn Ferenchak, Michele Song, Joseph Fell, Richard Harrington, Frank Harrington, Zachary Brown and Joshua Brown; six great-grandchildren, Sloane and Moya Ferenchak, Shannon, Nicholas and Brianna Song and Ryan Harrington; a daughter-in-law, Linda Harrington of  Oklahoma City, Okla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Helen Harrington of Montreal, Canada; and a brother-in-law, Robert Brown of Endicott. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a daughter and son, Kathryn and Richard Harrington.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at 10 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Thistle officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Little League, Box 542, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Catherine Hornacek
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Catherine Marton Hornacek, 97, formerly of the Bronner Apartments, died on Saturday evening, July 17, 1999, in The Meadows, Cooperstown.

She was born Jan. 9, 1902, in the Republic of Slovakia, where she was raised and educated. She immigrated to the United States when she was 19 years old.

In 1925, she married John Hornacek in New York City, a loving and devoted union of 39 years until his passing on May 6, 1964. Together, they had owned and operated restaurants in both the Greenpoint section of the Bronx and a second restaurant in the Bronx before coming to Richfield Springs in 1945. It was that year they opened the Park Inn, Richfield Springs, and operated it until her retirement in 1964.

Catherine enjoyed life, loved people and found great joy in gardening and flowers. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Little Falls.

Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Anne Hornacek of Richfield Springs; four granddaughters, Linda O'Connor of Richfield Springs, Christine Slocum of Liverpool, Susan Daley of Latham and Kathy VanNess of Toms River, N.J.; seven great-grandchildren; and a nephew, John Sadlon of Richfield Springs.

Besides her husband, John, she was preceded in death by a son, John Hornacek Jr. in 1988, and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at 1 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. David Blank, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Little Falls, officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Tuesday (today) from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Ethel J. Hurlburt
BAINBRIDGE — Mrs. Ethel J. Hurlburt, 85, of Bliss Road, Bainbridge, passed away Saturday, July 17, 1999, at the Skilled Nursing Facility, The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Jan. 3, 1914, in Afton. Ethel was the daughter of the late George and Jessie Culver Jeffers.

On June 19, 1937, she married Floyd R. Hurlburt in Bainbridge. He predeceased her March 31, 1967.

Mrs. Hurlburt was a retired employee of the Amphenol Corp., Sidney.

She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Bainbridge.

Ethel is survived by her daughter, Judy A. Dewey of Bainbridge; her brother, Richard Jeffers of Waverly; her sister, Dorothy Umber of Colorado; three grandchildren and families, Becky and Ted Freer of Guilford, Robert Dewey of Preston Hollow and Robynne and Bob Hoblitz of Bainbridge; seven great-grandchildren, Jenifer Freer, Jessica Freer, John Freer, Emily Freer, Sarah Hoblitz, Nicholas Hoblitz and Logan Dewey.

She was predeceased by her sister, Ione Barnhart.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at the Riverview Cemetery, Oxford, with the Rev. Fr. Bruce MacDuffie, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Oxford, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad, Bainbridge, N.Y. 13733 or to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Elizabeth C. Featherstone
MOUNT VISION — Elizabeth C. Featherstone, 59, died Monday morning, July 19, 1999, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

Elizabeth was born July 3, 1940, in Brooklyn, the daughter of William J. and Clare (Powers) Featherstone.

Elizabeth was raised in Nesconset, Long Island. She moved to Phoenix, Ariz., and in 1990 moved to upstate New York and resided in New Berlin and Mount Vision.

Elizabeth was a parishioner of St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church in New Berlin.

Elizabeth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Amy Ferraro; granddaughter, Nicole Ferraro of Oneonta; mother, Clare Featherstone; sister, Terry Migliorino of Mount Vision; a brother, William Featherstone of Lake Ronkonkoma; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral prayers will be said 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, New Berlin, with the Rev. Francis Case, administrator of the church, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Pauls Cemetery in Norwich. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church in Elizabeth's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta and Otego.

Frank Moore
MARGARETVILLE — Frank Moore, 63, of Margaretville, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

He was born Aug. 17, 1935, in Texar Kana,  Texas, the son of Rexall and Martha Moore.

Frank attended a Bible School in Georgia in his earlier years.

He worked as a ticket collector and game operator in a traveling circus.

He resided in Poughkeepsie for a number of years, where he attended the GROW workshop.

In 1981, Mr. Moore relocated to Woodstock Manor in Lake Hill, and attended Beacon House Day Program for several years. In 1981, he became employed at Ulster Greene ARC's Pilot Industries, and in 1985, he moved to Rothsteins Community Residence. He retired from Ulster Greene ARC's Pilot Industries in 1996. He attended Greenkill Adult Day Care Program in 1998. He was a member of Ulster Mental Health Association's RAH Program.

Frank is survived by four brothers; one sister; and dear friends at Rothstein's Manor, the M.H.A. and Ulster Green ARC.

Graveside service will be held Thursday, July 22, 1999, at 1:30 p.m. in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Harriett George
ONEONTA — Harriett George, 93, of the Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at the Fox Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Jan. 6, 1906, in Canistel, the daughter of Floyd B. and Goldie (Norton) George.

She married Herbert George on May 1, 1924, in Davenport. Mr. George died in August 1955.

She was a housekeeper for several Oneonta area families. She was an accomplished piano player. Mrs. George was a former member of the Women of the Moose No. 1461 and the American Legion Womens Auxiliary Post No. 259.

Harriett is survived by two grandchildren, Daniel Lewis George of Austin,  Texas, and Ronald Cameron George of Indianapolis, Ind.; and one cousin, Harriett Rogers of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by a son, Gordon George on Nov. 30, 1982.

Private funeral services will be held later at the convenience of the family. Burial will be later in the Plains Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the American Legion Post No. 259, 279 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Howard P. Gibbs
ROXBURY — Howard P. Gibbs, 90, of Roxbury, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 17, 1909, in South Worcester, the son of George F. Gibbs and Lela Proper.

He was first married to Marion Lutz on June 27, 1942, she died July 29, 1977. He married Bertha Geiger on Aug. 30, 1980, in Roxbury.

He was in the United States Army Signal Corp. He served in North Africa and Italy during 1943-1945.

He was a guidance director at Margaretville Central School from 1960-1974, also at Roxbury and Grand Gorge.

He was a past president of the Margaretville and Roxbury Rotary Clubs, presented a plaque for outstanding service with the Rotary in 1987, and was a rotarian for 16 years. He was Senior Citizen of the Year in 1977, for Delaware County.

He attended Springfield College, Springfield, Mass., from 1929-1933, bachelor's of science degree, and Columbia University New York City, 1947-1948, master's of arts degree. After graduation from Springfield, Howard was a social studies teacher at Treadwell, and coached one of the first soccer teams in the area.

Howard was well-known in the area for his musical expertise in playing the saw, and many children and adults will remember Howard for his thumb trick.

He was a member of Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury. He had been a Sunday school superintendent, consistory member and choir member. He was also a member Roxbury Senior Citizens Club.

Howard is survived by his wife, Bertha Gibbs; one son, Richard Gibbs of Harpswell, Maine; three grandchildren, Heather Didsbury and Nathaniel and Richard Gibbs; one great-grandchild, Christopher; one sister, Frances G. Gorsch of Roxbury; one nephew, Rudolph Gorsch of Worcester; three great-nieces; one great-nephew; three stepchildren, Steve Enderlin, Barbara Welch and Joan Montgomery; and several stepgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 23, 1999, at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Burial will be at the Roxbury Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, July 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Contributions may be made to the Kirkside Adult Home, Roxbury, or Roxbury Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Virginia Scanlon
COOPERSTOWN — Virginia Scanlon, 74, formerly of Maryland, died Monday, July 19, 1999, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

Arrangements are pending with the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Marjorie B. Winters
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A memorial service for Marjorie Beckingham Winters, 95, who passed away May 16, 1999, will be held on Saturday, July 24, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the East Springfield Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John Wilde, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, officiating.

Refreshments will follow at Marjorie's son's home on state Route 20, East Springfield, the Ted and Barbara Beckingham's residence.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Gerald B. Ellsworth
COOPERSTOWN — Gerald B. Ellsworth, 53, of Pioneer Street in Cooperstown, died Tuesday evening, July 20, 1999, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Feb. 22, 1946, in Cooperstown, the son of Charles D. and Enid (Brady) Ellsworth.

He married Catherine Lake on July 10, 1971, in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Jerry was raised in Cooperstown and graduated from Cooperstown Central School with the Class of 1965. He attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he was active in the theatre department and was president of the Dramatic Club. During his college summers, Jerry appeared in several summer stock productions at the "old" Cooperstown Playhouse (also known as "The Duke's Oak") and served one season there as stage manager. In 1969, he received a bachelor's of arts degree in history from Kenyon and then studied at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he acquired a master's degree in theatre.

Following his marriage to Catherine, they moved to Boston, where he attended Boston University. In 1973, he began teaching history and theatre at the University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe, Mich., leaving there in 1982, to return to his native Cooperstown.

Well-known in local theatre circles, Jerry directed dinner theatre productions at The Pepper Mill, directed and appeared in shows for the Cooperstown Central School Faculty Association, and appeared in productions of the Leatherstocking Theatre Company, including "The Fantasticks," "Curious Savage," "Our Town," "Room Service," "Whose Life Is It Anyway" and "Prelude to a Kiss." He also appeared in the Richfield Springs Regional Theatre's productions of "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "Charley's Aunt" as well as the Orpheus Theatre production of "Pajama Game." In addition, he directed "Ship Ahoy" at the Richfield Springs Regional Theatre and "The Man Who Came To Dinner," "King Stag" and "Mid-Summer Night's Dream" at Cooperstown Central School.

A well-known, active and devoted Cooperstonian, Jerry was involved in many religious and civic organizations. He was an active and faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he was currently serving as senior warden and, beginning in his chilhood as an acloyte, performed many liturgical functions, including assisting in celebrating the Holy Eucharist and serving as a lay reader.

Jerry was also active with the Cooperstown Central School. He was elected to the school's Board of Education in 1984, and for three years served as its president. In addition to currently serving on the board, he was also the president of the Cooperstown Central School Alumni Association.

Jerry was Raised in Otsego Lodge No. 138, Free and Accepted Masons in Cooperstown on June 17, 1969, served as master in 1988, and was currently serving as secretary of the Lodge and treasurer of the trustees. He was also a member of Otsego Chapter No. 26, Royal Arch Masons in Cooperstown. Currently serving as president of the village of Cooperstown Library Board, Jerry also devoted a lot of his time to other Cooperstown activities, including membership in the Lions Club of Cooperstown, the Auxiliary at Bassett Hospital, and was well known for his walking tours and in assisting the 4Cs in bringing Santa Claus to Cooperstown.

For the past 16 years Jerry had written a column for local newspapers, first known as "Where Nature Smiles" in the Freeman's Journal and then as "In These Otsego Hills" in the Cooperstown Crier.

Jerry was also an avid collector of canes, china brass and blue and white porcelain.

Jerry will be greatly missed by the many people whose lives he touched.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Catherine; his son, Christopher C. Ellsworth and his friend, Melanie Lichtenstein, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; one aunt, Helen Eckler of The Meadows; two first cousins, Walter Eckler of Cooperstown and Harvey Eckler of Fly Creek; his father-in-law, Leo O. Lake and his wife, Louise, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; his sister-in-law, Ellen Lake of Houston,  Texas; and his brother-in-law, Leo Lake and his wife, Mary Beth, of Minneapolis, Minn.

A service with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 23, 1999, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown, officiating; assisted by the Rev. Canon George F. French, rector emeritus of Christ Episcopal Church, the Rev. Ward Letteney and the Rev. Albert K. Jungers. A reception will follow at St. Mary's Parish Hall. The committal service and burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon in the Ellsworth family plot in Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown. Shorts are optional.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown this evening, Thursday, July 22, 1999, from 5 to 9 p.m., when Jerry's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Gerald B. Ellsworth Fund, either care of Cooperstown Central School, 39 Linden Ave., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or care of Kenyon College, College Relations Center, Gambier, Ohio 43022.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
