Emilie M. Elsass
WORCESTER — Emilie M. Elsass, 95, of Worcester, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at the Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 14, 1903, in Maryland, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Mary E. (Cady) VanZandt.

She married Harold George Elsass on Aug. 12, 1931, in Schenectady.

Mrs. Elsass was a graduate of Cooperstown High School and also of the State University College at Oneonta. She lived and taught school in Schenectady for nine years, then moved to Worcester, where she taught at Worcester Central School for 35 years, retiring in 1969.

Mrs. Elsass attended the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester, was a member of the Worcester Teachers Associaton and was active in the Worcester Woman's Club for many of years.

Mrs. Elsass is survived by her husband, Harold G. Elsass of Maryland; a nephew, Oliver V. Hall and his wife, Phila, of Crumhorn Lake and Punta Gorda, Fla.; a niece, Elaine M. Eustice of Syracuse; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 23, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 1999, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester, officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Elsass to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Lawrence DeBari III
SUSSEX, N.J. — Lawrence D. DeBari III, 45, formerly of Margaretville, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at his residence in Sussex township, N.J.

He was born Aug. 31, 1953, in Port  Jefferson, the son of Lawrence D. DeBari Jr. and June Weber.

He was single. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston for two years, played with "Blood, Sweat and Tears" and was the musical director for Phoebe Snow until 1991. Last November he appeared with Phoebe Snow on the Rosie O'Donnell Show.

He played with many bands, and played many instruments, but the guitar was his favorite. In 1992, he decided to open his own production studio with a partner (Tuff Guy Studios), in McAfee, N.J. It has proven to be very successful. He also enjoyed writing and recording his own music.

He lived in New Jersey for 25 years.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville. He graduated from Margaretville Central School.

Lawrence is survived by his mother, June DeBari of Margaretville; and two brothers, Arthur DeBari and Gerald DeBari, both of Arkville.

Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, July 24, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell officiating. Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Friday, July 23, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Harold W. deGraw
ONEONTA — Harold W. deGraw, 86, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born March 12, 1913, in Clifton Springs.

Mr. deGraw has been known as Oneonta's "movie man" for many years. He got his first theater job when he was 13 and went on to become manager for the Schine Theatre Chain. He came to Oneonta in 1940 as manager of the the now-closed Oneonta Palace Theatres. In 1950, the deGraws moved to Cambridge, Md., and in 1952 opened one of the first drive-in theaters in the U.S. The deGraws returned to Oneonta in 1961 and both Harold and Alice operated the Oneonta Theatre and then the Showcase Cinema.

Mr. deGraw held many civic positions in Oneonta. He served as president of the Fox Hospital board of trustees, president of the Hartwick College Citizens Board, president of the Oneonta Chamber of Commerce, president of the Oneonta Rotary Club, president of the Future of Oneonta and a director of the Wilber National Bank. He was a recipient of the Hartwick College Outstanding Citizens Award.

Mr. deGraw was married to the former Alice Rhinehart on June 3, 1939. She was a true partner in their theater business. She died July 24, 1996.

He is survived by his two daughters, Carolyn (James) Waddel of Lauree, Del., and Nancy (David) Strack of Lansing, Mich.; four grandchildren, Scott (Holly) Waddel, Mark Waddel, all of Mount Airy, Md., and Amy and Alan Strack of Boston, Mass.; and one great-grandchild, Katherine Waddel.

He also is survived by two sisters, Jean (John) France of Plantation, Fla., and Alice Cashman of Ithaca.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 24, from 1-2 p.m. at the Showcase Cinema, Elm Street.

Thomas M. Emerick
DELHI — Thomas M. Emerick, 56, of Puebla, Mexico, formerly of Delhi died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa., Tom was visiting the area when he became suddenly ill.
The son of the late Frank S. and Philomena (Muccio) Emerick, he was born Dec. 11, 1942, in Hartford, Conn., where he grew up.
He married Virginia A. Heise on Sept. 21, 1994, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Tom attended Boston University and received his certification from the Culinary Institute of America. A master chef, he managed restaurants in various parts of the U.S., subsequently entering the field of education. Tom taught at Holyoke Community College in Massachusetts, coming to Delhi in 1996, where he was assistant professor in the Culinary Arts Department at the State University of Technology.

In 1998, he moved to Mexico where he was a member of the faculty at the Instituto Culinario de Mexico in Puebla at the time of his sudden death.

In addition to his culinary expertise, Tom was also an avid golfer.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia A. Heise; a daughter, Philanna Emerick; a sister, Molly Jasudowich of Malvern, Pa.; a brother, Michael Emerick of Newington, Conn.; a niece and a nephew.

Friends are invited to call on Sunday at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi where the family will be in attendance after 7 p.m. and the Vigil Service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday, July 26, at St. Peter's R.C. Church, Delhi by the Rev. Joseph Manerowski, pastor, and the Rev. Bert Heise, O.F.M. Private cremation will follow.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Virginia L. Calkins
COOPERSTOWN — Miss Virginia Louise Calkins, 88, passed away July 7, 1999 at the Meadows, town of Middlefield, where she had resided since December 1995.

She was born March 11, 1911, at Catskill, the daughter of J. Truesdell Peck Calkins and Harriet Cooke Calkins.

Virginia was a 1933 graduate of Adelphi College, Garden City, and received her master's and a doctor of pedagory degrees from New York University. She taught in the secondary school at Hempstead, retiring in 1973.

Her father, Dr. Calkins was the founding president of Hofstra College at Hempstead.

Virginia was very active in the community being a past president of the Nassau County Historical Society and the first woman to hold that office. She was a volunteer guide at the Old Westbury Gardens. For more than 15 years she was the president of the Hempstead Branch of the Nassau Hospital Auxiliary, continuing that interest in Cooperstown as a member of the Bassett Hospital Auxiliary.

Virginia was a member of the Glimmerglass Opera Guild and the Otsego Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church in Hempstead until she moved to Cooperstown.

She is survived by cousins, Henry Whitbeck of Cherry Valley, Anne W. Hendrix of Schoharie, Henry J. and Jane Whitbeck of Cobleskill and Charles E. Cooke III of Cooperstown and Saginaw, Mich.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the Christ Episcopal Church Chapel, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Norman Sieme, officiating.

A graveside memorial service and burial will take place in the Greenfield Cemetery, Hempstead, at a later date.

Contributions in Virginia's memory may be made to the Glimmerglass Opera Guild, P.O. Box 191, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 and Nassau County Historical Society, P.O. Box 207, Garden City, N.Y. 11530.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Winnard Fraser Jr.
MOUNT VISION — Winnard Franklin Fraser Jr. 65, of Mount Vision died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at his residence.

He was born May 12, 1934, in Carle Place, L.I., the son of Winnard Franklin Fraser Sr. and Agnes (Esmann) Fraser.

He married Rose Marano Sept. 3, 1954, in Mineola. He had worked for Linn Coach and L.A. Moore Pest Control of Utica, before establishing his own business, General Pest Control of Mount Vision.

He and his family lived in the area for the past 45 years and had formerly lived on Long Island. Winnard was an avid lover of airplanes, trains and his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the National Pest Control Association.

He is survived by his wife, Rose, of Mount Vision; two daughters, Katherine Duval of Richmond, Maine, and Susan Gagnon and her husband, Richard, of Mount Vision; three sons, Winnard Fraser III and his wife, Linda, of West Laurens, Charles John Fraser and his wife, Dora, of Davenport and Allan Fraser and his wife, Margaret, of Mount Vision; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and sisters-and brothers-in-law.

The family will receive friends at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 1999, and a memorial service will follow at 8 p.m. with Pastor Chris Ellis officiating.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Catskill Area Hospice or the American Cancer Society in his memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Frank A. Knapp
WEST ONEONTA — Frank A. Knapp, 77, of West Oneonta, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at his residence.

He was born July 17, 1922, in Walton, the son of Jessie and Olive (Finch) Knapp. He married Laura Keator on April 3, 1949. She died Feb. 14, 1998.

For a period of 20 years, retiring in 1987, Frank was the supervisor of grounds for the State University of New York at Oneonta.

He served during World War II, as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Military Police.

He was a member of the Laurens American Legion, the Oneonta Moose Lodge 465 and its Legion of the Moose, the AARP and the Hartwick Rod and Gun Club. Frank took great pleasure and pride in his annual vegetable garden, for which he shared with his many friends and neighbors.

He is survived by his children, Joyce M. Fraser of Jacksonville, Fla., Ricky A. Knapp of Warwick, Janet L. Speranzi of Jacksonville, Fla., and Dave Knapp and his wife, Beth, of Oneonta; eight grandchildren, Tim Fraser, Stacia Nettles, Richard and Scott Knapp, Craig and Brandee Speranzi and Melissa and Carah Knapp; three great-grandchildren, Samantha and Kyle Nettles and Synthia Knapp; four brothers, Harry Knapp of Schenevus, Eugene B. Knapp of Zephyrhills, Fla., Hugh Knapp of Dade City, Fla., and Jack Knapp of West Laurens.

He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 26, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the River Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the West Oneonta Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Friends may call Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Alene Evelyn Finley
DELHI — Alene Evelyn Finley, 90, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, peacefully at home.

She was born July 4, 1909, in Greenwood Lake, the daughter of the late Edna and Harry Rumsey of Ramsey, N.J.

On Sept. 21, 1930, she married Robert G. Finley Sr. at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Ramsey, N.J., Robert passed away Jan. 21, 1995.

Alene worked for 27 years at the Ridgewood Herald Newspaper in Ridgewood, N.J. She lived in Ramsey before retiring to Honest Brook Road, Delhi, in 1969. She was an avid bowler and gardener.

She is survived by a son, Robert G. Finley Jr., and daughter-in-law, Jean; grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Ithaca; a daughter, Lois, and son-in-law, John C. Antes of Delhi; granddaughter JoAnn and great-granddaughters Jessica and Miranda. She is also survived by a sister, Hazel Hollands, of Mesa, Ariz.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Delhi Ambulance Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Pearl May Hyatt
EAST GUILFORD — Pearl May Hyatt, 91, a resident at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home, Norwich, and formerly of East Guilford passed away peacefully Saturday morning, July 24, 1999, in Norwich.

She was born Feb. 19, 1908, in the town of Butternuts. Pearl was the daughter of the late William John and Chloe Lucinda Coon Thurston.

She married Kenneth Hyatt. He predeceased her November 1959.

Mrs. Hyatt was a longtime member of the East Guilford Presbyterian Church and the I.A.M.& A.W. Local 1529, Sidney.

For several years, Mrs. Hyatt was an inspector of the E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney. She retired in 1973.

Mrs. Hyatt is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Stuart and Thelma Thurston of Cobleskill; brother-in-law, Edgar Hyatt of East Guilford; also several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her two sisters, Flora Hyatt and Isabell Townsend.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 27, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Douglas Horne, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Afton, officiating. Burial will follow in the East Guilford Cemetery.

Friends are invited to call after 2 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in her name may be made to the East Guilford Presbyterian Church, if desired.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Donald J. Patchen
BAINBRIDGE — Donald J. Patchen, 76, of 327 Newton Town Road, Bainbridge, passed away Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton.

He was born Sept. 24, 1922, in Victory. Don was the son of the late Justin and Genevieve Wetherby Patchen.

On July 11, 1946, he married Elizabeth Hitchcock in Wolcott.

Mr. Patchen was a rural mail carrier in the Bainbridge area for more than 30 years. He retired Jan. 12, 1979.

Donald was a veteran in the United States Air Force, serving his country during both World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Bainbridge, Slater-Silvernail Post 806 American Legion, Bainbridge, and had served as a past commander.

He also was an honorary member of the Bainbridge Fire Department, founding member of the B-G Alumni Association, The 4th Fighters Group Association and the Rural Letter Carriers Association. At the present time, Don was an active member of the Bainbridge Board of Fire Commissioners.

Donald is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth H. Patchen of Bainbridge; his son, David J. Patchen of Bainbridge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Patrick Chambers of Syracuse and Diane and Gary Gardner of Afton; brother and sister-in-law, Norris and Gertrude Patchen of Martville; four grandsons, Kirby and Erik Lord and Timothy and Joseph Gardner; two great-grandchildren; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Patchen.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Douglas Horne, pastor of the Afton Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Wednesday at the funeral chapel. His family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Hospice at Lourdes Hospital, 169 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, N.Y. 13901.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Patricia Ettenberger
CORTLANDVILLE — Patricia A. Hazzard Ettenberger, 52, of 736 McLean Road, Cortlandville, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, July 25, 1999, at the Cortland Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 8, 1947, in Cortland, the daughter of Robert and Doris Colegrove Hazzard.

Patricia lived in Otego, and was a graduate of Unatego High School. She returned to the Cortland area in the mid-1970s. She had been working for the Homer School District for 20 years as a teacher's aide until her illness forced her to retire. Patricia served on the board for the American Red Cross of Cortland. In her spare time she enjoyed caring for her birds and tending to her flowers.

Patricia is survived by her husband of two years, Kenneth Ettenberger Jr. of Cortlandville; son, Robert (Erica) Neilson of Ithaca; daughter, Nicole Neilson of Homer; father and stepmother, Robert and Jane Hazzard of Oneonta; brother, Peter (Veronica) Hazzard of Kingston; stepdaughters, Karen (Jeff) Dailey, Laurie (Joe) Reagan, Shari (Brian) Powers, all of Cortland; father and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Mary Ettenberger Sr. of Spring Hills, Fla.; three grandchildren, Casey, Colby and Bailey; sister and brother-in-law, aunts, uncles, a niece, a nephew and cousins.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland. Burial will follow in Upper Lisle Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service at Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the American Red Cross, 636 S. Warren St., Syracuse, N.Y., 13202.

Donald A. Bouton
DELAND, Fla. — Donald A. Bouton, 76, died June 23, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, West Valusia, Fla.

He was born to Anson and Zadie Bouton in Oneonta, N.Y., on April 9, 1923.

Donald graduated from Otego Central School and was very active in sports.

He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

During the 1950s, he worked as a union bricklayer and acted as business agent for the union. In the 1960s, he was a partner in Bouton Bros. Construction Co., Oneonta, N.Y.

He later moved to Dolgeville, where he owned and operated the Dolgeville Restaurant, until his retirement when he settled in DeLand, Fla.

He was a member of the V.F.W. in DeLand, Fla., and Little Falls American Legion.

Donald is survived by his wife, Mabel; two sons, Gary of Titusville, Fla., and David of Merritt Island, Fla.; two daughters, Debbie Riely of Merritt Island, Fla., and Cathy Monahan of Bothell, Wash.; a brother, Gerald of Oneonta; a very special cousin, Bernice Thorpe of Bainbridge, N.Y.; and 12 grandchildren.
