Donald L. Stanley
SIDNEY — Donald L. Stanley, 59, of 13 River St., Sidney, died unexpectedly Thursday, July 29, 1999, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 30, 1939, in Endicott. He was the son of Carroll and Dorothy Atwood Jamieson.

Don was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan.

He is survived by his parents, Curley and Dorothy Jamieson of Port Crane; two sons, Andy and Jim Stanley of Sidney; his best friend and companion, Donna Baird of Sidney; a sister, Dale Coleman of Panama City, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Private burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, at the family's convenience.

Friends are invited to call from 11 a.m. until time of services at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.

Donald L. Weidman
LILBURN, Ga. — Donald L. Weidman, 63, of Lilburn, Ga., died July 28, 1999.

He is survived by his wife Betty L. Weidman; his children, Marcia Margolius of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Sheila Weidman-Farley of Alpharetta, Ga., and Marshall Weidman of Commerce, Ga.; brothers, Herbert Weidman of Mount Upton and James Weidman of Binghamton; a sister, Beatrice Freer of Bradenton, Fla.; and grandchildren, Kevin Margolius, Kate Farley and Valerie Margolius.

Mr. Weidman owned and operated a dairy farm for many years in Mount Upton.

Contributions in Mr. Weidman's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

National Cremation Society Memorial Center, Lilburn, Ga., was in charge of arrangements.

Donald Glenn Russ
OTEGO — Donald Glenn Russ, 64, died Saturday evening, July 31, 1999, at home, 65 River St., Otego.

He was born Jan. 30, 1935, in Nineveh, to Glenn Russ and Evelyn Pratt Russ Kane.

On June 20, 1959, he married Linda Olson in Binghamton. They had just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

Donald was a lifelong area native. He graduated from Harpursville Central School. After attending the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Morrisville and the State University College at Oneonta, he graduated with a master's degree in science education. He was a science teacher at the Sidney schools and then went on to SUCO, where he taught for 27 years. He devoted his energies to his family, community and teaching. He was active in Scouting, canoe racing and supporting his children's academic and athletic interests.

He has been a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Sidney, since 1960, where he taught Sunday School, served on the Church Counsel, and participated in many different church programs and activities. He has always supported libraries, and had been a member of Otego's Harris Memorial Library Board for many years, serving as president, vice president and adviser at various times. He was an active member of the local Man-to-Man Prostate Cancer Support and Information Group.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Eleanor Olson Russ; son, Donald Edwin Russ of Rochester; son, Glenn Albert Russ; daughter-in-law, Melissa Claire Freeman Russ and granddaughter, Teagan Claire Russ of Stuttgart, Germany; his mother, Lois Ferguson Russ of Oneonta; sisters, Marcia McClanahan of Virginia and Glenda Batey of Tennessee; brother, Jacque Russ of Horseheads; three aunts, Eloise Torino of Sidney, Ellen Russ of Binghamton and Myrtle Heck of Oneonta; and many well loved in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Linda Evelyn Russ of Wells Bridge, his father, Glenn Russ, his stepfather, Charles Kane and his brother, Ray Bucky Kane of Afton.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Sidney on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Allie Leitzel, pastor, officiating.

Wanda L. Stewart
HARTWICK — Mrs. Wanda L. Stewart, 61, of Gulf Road, Hartwick, died Friday evening, July 30, 1999, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

One of 17 children, she was born on May 10, 1938, in the town of Burlington, a daughter of Willard and Ella (Southworth) McLean.

She married Franklin J. Stewart on Oct. 9, 1954, in Hartwick.

Wanda was raised on Snowdon Hill and attended the Snowdon Hill Country School and later the Edmeston Central School. A devoted wife and mother, she spent most of her life raising her family. For 10 years she worked in the dietary department at The Meadows, leaving there in 1996.

Of the Christian faith, Wanda enjoyed gardening and had a true love of nature and all of God's creatures.

Wanda is survived by her husband of 45 years, Frank; three daughters and one son-in-law, Pamela Stewart, Lori K. Stewart and Jodi L. Bottita and her husband, Jack; one adopted son, Rodney Shute; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; nine sisters, Erma Hughes, Beulah Osborne, Albema Gabrosek, Betty Crockford, Alberta Eastman, Columbine Oblock, Gladys Scribner, Marjorie Snyder and Edna Ruling; many, many nieces and nephews; one cousin, Edith Bliss; and two very special friends, Joan and George Bardin.

She was predeceased by one son, Willard W. Stewart, who died Nov. 5, 1977, and five brothers, Lyle, Kenneth, Norman, Leonard and Nelson McLean.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at the Hartwick Christian Church with the Rev. Laverne H. Saxer, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until service time on Tuesday, when Mrs. Stewart's family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Walter R. Tschorn
SCHENEVUS — Walter Richard Tschorn, 92, of Schenevus died Saturday, July 31, 1999, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

He was born March 5, 1907, in the village of Cunnersdorf, Silesia, Germany, near Hirschberg, which is now Poland. He was the son of Ernest and Ida (Stenzel) Tschorn.

He married Elizabeth Herz on Oct. 7, 1934, in New York City.

In Germany, Walter had learned the trade of cabinet maker. He came to America in 1927.

Walter worked for Borden's Milk Co. for 42 years in New York City. Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to Schenevus in 1969.

Walter was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Schenevus, and Sacred Heart Ministry in New Rochelle and Walls, Miss.

Walter is survived by his sister, Frieda Reiger, 91, of Hameln, Germany; a great-nephew, Ted Scopes of Ossining; a great-niece, Suzanne Scopes of Portland, Ore.; a second cousin, Paul H. Yakutis of Placerville,  Calif.; cousins, Robert Tschorn of Hawleyville, Conn., Cynthia Peterson of Metuchen, N.J., Douglas Tschorn of Arlington, Vt. and Harry L.  Jackson of Chico,  Calif.

Walter was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth, as well as their only daughter, Frances, in 1994. Also, his brother, Gerhart, a soldier who died in World War II, and his sister, Elsie Trost of Unadilla, who died in 1982.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Schenevus, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Schenevus or Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 272, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Wallace Marvin Wynkoop
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Wallace Marvin Wynkoop, 81, died July 30, 1999 in Virginia Beach, Va.

He was born Aug. 13, 1917, the only child of Vivian Clark and Marvin D. Wynkoop.

A Downsville native, he lived 80 years in the community before retiring to Virginia. Mr. Wynkoop was salutatorian of the Downsville Class of 1933 and a 1939 graduate of Union University College of Pharmacy. He was owner and operator of Wynkoop's Pharmacy in Downsville from 1948-1972.

"Wally" Wynkoop began a lifetime of public service in 1936 as a bill clerk and page in the New York State Assembly Document Room. He returned to Downsville serving as justice of the peace from 1940-1942. During World War II, as a Navy Pharmacist's Mate, Wynkoop was stationed in Key West, Fla., and Guam.

He was a Downsville School Board member from 1950-1952, secretary/treasurer of the Downsville Fire District from 1953-1972 and a 35-year member of the department.

First elected supervisor of the town of Colchester in 1958, Wally served as chairman of the Delaware County finance committee (1960-1972) and as the county's first budget director from 1968-1972. During his 14-year tenure, the Colchester Police Department was established and all Colchester cemeteries were assured of perpetual care.

Wynkoop was a New York State Republican Committeeman from 1979-1997. In 1970, Gov. Nelson Rockefeller appointed Wynkoop to the New York State Off-Track Betting Commission where he served as executive director from 1972-1973. Between 1973 and 1976, he acted as assistant director and director of the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, Division of Off-Track Betting and Executive Director of the New York State Association of Off-Track Betting Corporations. He was a consultant and registered lobbyist from 1977-1996.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 58 years, Mildred Mosher Wynkoop; daughter, Marilyn W. Banes; son-in-law, Dr. Robert T. Banes and grandson, Robert T. Banes Jr. of Virgina Beach, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999 at Colchester Community Church by the Rev. Maybelle Renzi and the Rev. John G. Wall. Interment will be in Paige Cemetery.

The family will receive friends for remembrance and visitation from 7-9 p.m. today at Knorr Funeral Home, Downsville.

Cleo Doris Taylor
AMBLERVILLE — Cleo Doris Knapp Taylor, 57, of Amblerville, passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich, after a long battle with cancer.

Cleo was a wonderful and very loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and mother-in-law. Her family and friends were first and foremost in her life. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed, but not forgotten.

Cleo had previously worked for Scarcella's Diner and Valley View Manor Nursing Home. Most recently, she was employed for 26 years by Amphenol of Sidney.

She was born March 15, 1942, in Plymouth. Cleo was the daughter of Frank and Grace (Brazee) Knapp.

On May 25, 1963, in Norwich, she married Robert  Taylor of Amblerville, who survives.

Besides her husband, Robert, Cleo is survived by her two daughters and son-in-law, Tonya and Ralph Hitchcock of Chestertown and Jody  Taylor of Norwich; two sons and daughter-in-law, Craig and Teresa  Taylor of Norwich and Todd  Taylor of Amblerville; and seven grandchildren, Sierra, Cassandra, Nathan and Olivia  Taylor and Merissa, Damion and Krista Horne, all of Norwich. She is also survived by seven sisters and three brothers-in-law, Velma Parker of West Palm Beach, Fla., Cecile and Kenneth Fink of South Plymouth, Nancy Morris of DeRuyter, Diana and David Wadsworth of South New Berlin, Daisy Davisson of Norwich, Terry Donnelly of Norwich and Tina and Rob Favorito of Norwich; and by five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Stanley and Joan Knapp of  South Carolina, Lawrence Knapp of South Plymouth, Lyle (Jim) and Rose Knapp of South Plymouth, Gene and Cindy Knapp of New Berlin, and Jerry and Marge Knapp of Earlville; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Cleo was predeceased by her parents Frank and Grace Knapp, and her two sisters, Leila and Martha Knapp, who died during infancy.

Funeral services for Cleo will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Landers, pastor of the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin, officiating. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery of South New Berlin. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905-4704.

Edward Salamacha
HAMMOND — Edward S. Salamacha, 68, of 18 South Main St., Hammond, died on Wednesday, July 28, 1999, from injuries that were the result of an accident. He died at Hepburn Hospital, Ogdensburg.

He was born March 29, 1931, in New York City, the son of Steven and Matilda Zilling Salamacha.

He graduated from Edmeston High School, Edmeston. He entered the Army on Jan. 4, 1949, and was discharged on June 6, 1952. Sgt. Edward S. Salamacha (then corporal), Infantry, United States Army, a member of Company C, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement near Weegwan, Korea, on Sept. 19, 1950. When his squad reached mid-stream during the Noktong River crossing, the enemy, from prepared positions placed intense artillery, mortar and small arms fire on the attacking troops. Though he was wounded in this action, Sgt. Salamacha led his squad to the far shore. Refusing evacuation, he reorganized his squad and led the successful assault on the enemy strong points. Sgt. Salamacha's heroic example, with complete disregard for his own safety, reflects great credit on himself and the United States Infantry. He entered military service from Hartwick.

He married Rosalyn Switzer on Oct. 17, 1953, in Bath. They had four sons together.

He worked for New York Telephone, Utica, for 13 years. He also worked for Remington Arms in Ilion. They moved from Ilion to Hammond in 1969. There he owned and operated Hammond Enterprises, a hardware store, until 1991. He also drove school bus for Hammond Central School for 23 years with perfect attendance. After that he worked for Kosman Realty until present. Kosman Realty is in Hammond.

He was a member of the American Legion, Ilion, and Citizens Patrol, Canton.

He was an avid bowler, hunter, golfer and wood cutter.

Edward is survived by his wife, Rosalyn; his parents, Steve and Matilda Salamacha of Hartwick; four sons, Jeffrey of Clinton, Tenn., Randy of Hammond, Douglas of Hammond and Steven of Fountain,  Colo.; one sister, Nancy Demeree of Little Falls; one brother, Richard Salamacha of Plant City, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren.

Arrangements are with Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Inc., Theresa.

Clarence E. Moss
SOUTH KORTRIGHT — Clarence E. Moss, 73, a resident of Sarah's Senior Care Home, South Kortright, and formerly of 11 Knapp St., Sidney, passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born March 15, 1926, in  Johnson City. He was the son of the late Clarence L. and Edith  Jones Moss.

On Dec. 8, 1978, he married Ida Burton in Unadilla.

Mr. Moss was a longtime resident of Sidney. Mo was the bookkeeper for several years at Sidney Appliance and Modern Kitchens, Sidney. He later became a driver for Ellinwood Auto Parts, Sidney.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving his country in the United States Navy.

Mr. Moss was a member of the Charles L. Jacobi Post 183 American Legion, Sidney. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 277, Sidney and the R.H. Arrandale Post 7914, V.F.W., Sidney.

Mr. Moss is survived by his wife, Ida Moss of South Kortright; two sons, Edward Moss of New Orleans, La., and Richard Moss, United States Marines stationed in Hawaii; two stepsons, Paul J. Hamilton and Kenneth L. Hamilton, both of Sidney; one stepdaughter, Marlene Walker of Norwich; sister, Mrs. Marion Reese of Rockville, Md.; also several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Robert Wesley, Sidney, officiating. Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. prior to the services on Wednesday.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Sqaud, Sidney.

Rowena Spickerman
MARGARETVILLE — Rowena Spickerman, 79, of Margaretville, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

She was born Sept. 26, 1919, in Andes, the daugher of Austin Ingram and Minnie Estes.

She married Ernest (Dutch) Spickerman. He died in 1977.

She was a homemaker. She was a lifelong area resident.

Rowena was an avid gardener and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She loved to play Bingo.

Rowena is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Cathleen Spickerman of Margaretville; two grandchildren, Jennifer and husband, Mike Ennist, of Margaretville and Justin Spickerman of Margaretville; also survived by grandchildren, Ernest MacNeil of Binghamton, Ray Kole of Margaretville, Gregg Kole of Andes and Christine Kole of  Pennsylvania; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Glen Ingram of Margaretville, Floyd Ingram of Margaretville, Donald Ingram of Andes and Verlyn Ingram of Arizona; and two sisters, Helen Sager of Binghamton and Patricia Mariotti of Florida.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Phyllis Spickerman, who died in 1987; five brothers, Robert, Calvin, Durwood, Bernard and Charles; and two sisters, Mabel Hofsdal and Louise Hinz.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at the United Presbyterian Church, New Kingston, with Diane Wickham officiating. Burial will be in the New Kingston Cemetery, New Kingston.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made in memory of Rowena Spickerman to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Grace M. Rose
BURLINGTON FLATS — Grace M. Rose, 86, of Burlington Flats, died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at The Meadows.

She was born May 7, 1913, in Brookfield, the daughter of Clayton J. and Sarah A. (Whalen) Abrams.

She married Kenneth C. Rose on May 7, 1941, he predeceased her Aug. 7, 1968.

Grace was a people person who loved her outdoors flowers, crocheting, and her family circled within her home.

Grace is survived by her children, Nancy and Dick Schoonover and Dennis and Sue Rose; six grandchildren, Mark Schoonover, Karen Bressett, Kathy Carnrike, Mike Schoonover, Tina Rose and Vicki Davis; 11 great-grandchildren; her sisters-in-law, Beatrice Tuttle, Doris Abrams, Wilma Bennett, Mable Dye, Bertha Dockstader and Betty Lou Lamb; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Pfc. Andrew Rose on June 3, 1969. As a proud Gold Star mother, Grace was honored to place the wreath at the Veteran's Memorial in Burlington Flats at the conclusion of the Memorial Day parade each year.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with Pastor Don Buck officiating. Calling hours are from noon until service time. Interment will follow at Burlington Flats Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Helen Price
STAMFORD — Helen Price, 74, of Stamford, died after a short illness on Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999.

She was an area resident for 30 years, formerly of Commack, Long Island.

Helen was retired from her position as dietary cook at the Stamford Hospital. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and the VFW Women's Auxiliary Post No. 6292.

Helen was the loving wife of Thaddeus for 51 years and the devoted mother of Robert and mother-in-law of his wife, Marilynn, of Stamford. She is also survived by three nephews and two nieces.

Friends may call at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St. (corner of Liberty), Stamford, from 6 until 10 this evening. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Stamford. Interment will follow immediately at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, it was Helen's request that contributions be made to the Benedictine Missionary, 350 Cuba Hill Road, Huntington, N.Y. 11743 or the Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the William A. Tari Funeral Home, Stamford.
