Helen Conrad Sanford
MARGARETVILLE — Helen Conrad Sanford died on Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at Mountainside Health Care Facility, Margaretville.

Helen was born Dec. 21, 1927, in Deposit, the daughter of George H. and Maude Hendrickson Conrad.

She was married to George Sanford on Oct. 15, 1957, in Deposit. He predeceased her in 1988.

She was a lifetime area resident having lived in various locations in Delaware County. Helen will best be remembered for her 30-plus years of operating Conrad's Service Station in Andes. In addition to working countless hours seven days a week, she was dispatcher for the Andes Fire Department and Emergency Squad 24 hours a day for many years. Helen was dedicated to serving the public and will be missed. She also sponsored Fresh Air kids from New York City.

Helen is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Emily Conrad of Deposit. Also surviving are an aunt, two nephews and a niece.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes with the Rev. Daniel McCollister, pastor of Andes United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hale Eddy Cemetery.

Calling hours on Thursday at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home with the family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials to the Catskill Area Hospice, Delhi, in her name.

Velma Pfendler
SIDNEY — Velma Tomblinson Pfendler died on Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at her home on 3 Pearl St., Sidney.

She was born on Oct. 27, 1915, in Ashbyburg, Ky. She was the daughter of Charles Hector and Frances Elizabeth Luck Tomblinson.

"Teena" was a longtime resident of Sidney with an exuberant interest in children, the community, her family and friends.

Velma is survived by her sons, Francis W. Mettrick of New York and Jan C. Mitrzyk Sr. of Connecticut. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Jan C. Mitrzyk Jr., Christopher J. Mitrzyk and Felicia D. Mitrzyk Vitale; their mother, Mrs. Edna Brooks and her husband, Walter Brooks, of Unadilla; and her great-grandson, Justin Vitale, all of Connecticut. She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Robertson of Oxford.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Francis W. Mettrick and Donald L. Pfendler.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Sidney.

In place of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sidney Public Library to the children's center in memory of "Teena's " lifelong joy and interest in children.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Carl J. Hendricks
DAVENPORT — Memorial services for Carl J. Hendricks, 74, of Butts Corners, who passed away Aug. 7, 1999, will take place on Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at 1 p.m. at his home at Butts Corners, with the Rev. Paul Messner, of Worcester, officiating.
Carl is survived by his wife, Helen at home; a daughter, Janye Hendricks of Florida; stepchildren, Barbara Burr of Oneonta, Carol Brownell of Walton, William Staiber of Boston, Mass., and Paul Staiber of Davenport; six grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; and a brother, John Hendricks of Milford.

A sister, Marie, predeceased him.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Frances L. Smith
UNADILLA — Mrs. Frances L. Smith, 90, of Unadilla went to join her Lord on Wednesday morning, Aug. 11, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born April 18, 1909, in Pine Hill, the daughter of Ruby Pearl (Rappleyea) Stevens and Paul Eignor.

Frances was a member of the Hobart Presbyterian Church. She lived in Roxbury, Grand Gorge, Franklin, Milford, Hartwick and Oneonta areas. She was currently living with her daughter, Gale, in Unadilla.

Frances worked taking care of children and housekeeping in the Oneona area.

Frances is survived by one son and three daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Belle Barkman of  South Carolina, Mary Barkman of Trumansburg and Janette Barkman of Mount Upton; three daughters and one son-in-law, Dorothy Foutch of Oneonta, Sarah Condon of Mount Vision and Gale and Robert Lindroth of Unadilla; 20 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-great-grandchildren; one brother, BC Stevens of Watertown; and one sister, Mildred Castle of Treadwell.

Frances was predeceased by three husbands, Clarence Fairbairn, Paul Barkman and Clayton Smith; three sons, Paul, Milton and Gerald Barkman; one daughter, Joyce Barkman; one great-grandson; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy Thistle, chaplain at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating. Burial will follow at the Manorkill Cemetery, Manorkill.

The family will be in attendance on Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 or to the charity of one's choice in loving memory of Frances L. Smith.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Arthur E. Hall
COOPERSTOWN — Arthur E. Hall, 85, of 87 Beaver Street, Cooperstown, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.

Mr. Hall was born Jan. 16, 1914, in Oneonta, the son of Hazael and Anna (Flanagan) Hall.

He was a lifelong resident and native son of Cooperstown and graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1934. Art was employed by the Cooperstown post office from 1940 to 1975.

On June 28, 1941, he married Helen Nicos, who predeceased him on July 19, 1985.

He played basketball and baseball in high school, participated in many sports, and was an avid fan of all sports.

For more than 50 years he was a member of the Oneonta-Schoanna Umpire Board. Mr. Hall was a devout New York Yankee fan. He also ran and umpired his own softball team as well as played town ball from the 30s through the 60s.

Mr. Hall is survived by four daughters, Linda Hall of Sidney, Mary Hall of Fly Creek, Mrs. Michael (Christine) Baldwin of East Aurora and Patty Hall of Boston, Mass.; three grandchidren, Cory Rose, Marcy and Shannon Baldwin; three great-granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

He was predeceased by his sister, Ella Healy in 1982.

A funeral service will be held at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at 3 p.m. with Fr. John R. Roos, pastor of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake, officiating. Burial will follow in the Milford Cemetery. Friends may call at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Cooperstown on Thursday evening, Aug. 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those who wish may contribute to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, Sidney, or to the Susquehanna SPCA, state Highway 28, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Robert Hudson Hoak
MILFORD — Mr. Robert Hudson Hoak, of Milford, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at his home.

He was born Nov. 3, 1910, in Sterling, Ill., to Harry and Lena Hoak.

Robert lived and worked in Sterling, Ill., as a manager for Sears Roebuck & Co.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps, returning to Sterling, Ill., and his position with Sears after the war.

He married Jean Scuffham, who predeceased him, in Milford on July 30, 1943, and transferred several times with Sears from Muskegan, Mich., to Grand Rapids and on to Kankakee, Ill. Upon retirement from Sears Roebuck & Co., the couple purchased a farm in Milford and spent eight years farming. Robert also spent several years with The Leatherstocking Corp. (Fenimore House) in Cooperstown.

Robert enjoyed woodworking, canoeing and photography. He was a member of the Grand Malta Masonic Lodge of Grand Rapids, Mich., the Greater Milford Historical Society, the Rotary Club of Milford and the Doubleday Dancers of Cooperstown.

Robert is survived by one daughter, Miss Judy R. Hoak of Sommerville, N.J.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Eve Scuffham Smith of Alberta, Canada; two nieces, Pat  Johnson of Alberta, Canada, and Betty Stoudt of Springdale, Ark.; and two nephews, Mr. Howard Hicks of Sterling, Ill., and Mr. Millard Hicks of Dixon, Ill.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999,at 2:30 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, with the Rev. Betsy DelGiacco officiating. Interment will follow in the Westville Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Harvey W. Gransbury
WALTON — Harvey W. Gransbury, 72, of Walton, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was a retired machine operator at S.J. Bailey & Sons Inc. in Walton and former owner and operator of a dairy farm in DeLancey.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Betty Gransbury of Walton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Susan Gransbury of Walton and Margaret and Bennett Thompson of Rockdale; seven sons and daughters-in-law, Randy Gransbury of Walton, Steven and Elaine Gransbury of Sidney, Robert and Connie Gransbury of Walton, David Gransbury of Walton, Richard Gransbury of Walton, Harvey W. Gransbury III and BJ Lake of Northfield and Danny Gransbury of Detroit, Mich.; several grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Zana Reynolds of Wells Bridge; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, corner of Platt and Townsend streets, Walton, with the Rev. Delbert Ripley, pastor of Northfield Community Church, officiating. Burial will be in Masonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc., Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton on Thursday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to: Walton Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc., Funeral Home, Walton.

Erika Jaeck
ONEONTA — Erika Jaeck, of Oneonta, passed away peacefuly at her residence after a short illness.

Mrs. Jaeck was born in Litzmannestadt, Germany, and was married to Wilhelm Jaeck in Wollmarshausen, Germany, in 1950.

She came to the United States with her husband and infant son in 1952, and established residency in New York City.

In 1959, the family moved to Oneonta, where they started WJ Auto Service, which later became Oneonta Auto Imports. Mr. and Mrs. Jaeck retired in 1978.

Mrs. Jaeck is survived by a son, Dielmar Jaeck, and his wife, Virgina; a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Christiane) Hughes of Oneonta; and five grandchildren, Gunnar, Alana and Kristoff Jaeck and Kimberly and her husband, Wilhelm, and Collin Hughes, all of Hartwick and Oneonta.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta or the Evengelical Lutheran Church, Hartwick Seminary.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Joseph T. Stewart
SUMMIT — Joseph T. Stewart of Charlotteville Road, Summit, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at his home after a long illness.

He was born June 25, 1916, in Jersey City, N.J., and had lived in Summit since April 1949, coming from the Bronx.

He was an electrician and former owner of the Summit Telephone Co., which is now serving the Summit-Charlotteville area as part of the Middleburgh Telephone Co.

He had served 14 years as a maintenance plant engineer at the Summit Correctional Facility, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Schoharie Post No. 1261, American Legion, and of the Summit Fire Department and a former member of the Lions Club and Cobleskill Lodge Elks.

He served in World War II in the Third Army, Fourth Armored Division under Gen. George Patton as a tank commander and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, the Purple Heart and the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. He served in Normandy, Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and the Rhineland.

He was married Nov. 8, 1941, in the Bronx, to Muriel Waibel, who survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Carol Lagasse of Cobleskill, Patricia Shephard of Worcester and Maureen Johns of Summit; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, at 10 a.m. at St. Anna's Church, Route 10, Summit. Friends may call at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St., Cobleskill on Friday, from 6 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Interment will be in the Summit Cemetery with military honors supplied by Schoharie Post No. 1261, American Legion.

Memorials to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 MacArthur Ave., Cobleskill, N.Y. will be appreciated.

Florence E. Moody
MONTICELLO — Florence E. Moody, of Monticello and formerly of Hobart, died Wednesday Aug. 11, 1999, at Walnut Mountain Care Center, Liberty. She was 94.

Florence was born on May 22, 1905, in Grand Gorge, to the late Fred and Grace Blodgett Harris.

She had been a teacher in a one-room school at Rose's Brook for several years.

She was married to the Rev. George B. Moody, who survives.

Florence attended the Monticello United Methodist Church, and was very active within the United Methodist Organization working with children and the Women's Council. She also served on the national level for the United Methodist Church.

Florence is survived by her husband, George at home; two nephews, Rodney Harris of Davenport and Roger Harris of Bloomville; and one niece, Eldeen Pangia of Walden.

She was predeceased by a brother, Vincent Harris.

Cremation will be at the convenience of the family at Cedar Hill Crematory, Newburgh.

A graveside service for committal of ashes will be held on Friday, August 20, 1999, at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart, with the Rev. Richard Elder officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced at the Monticello United Methodist Church, Monticello.

Memorial contributions to the Monticello United Methodist Church, 255 Broadway, Monticello, N.Y. 12701, would be appreciated.

Arrangements are by Ramsay's Funeral Homes, Inc., 66 St. John St., Monticello.

Adelaide Bush
SOUTH GILBOA — Adelaide Bush, 81, of South Gilboa Road, died Sunday, August 8, 1999, at her residence.

She was born May 20, 1918, in Spruceton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dayton Van Valkenburgh.

She was married to Paul Bush in September 1938. Paul died May 19, 1989.

Adelaide lived in South Gilboa since 1959, moving there from Lexington. She was a member of the Gilboa United Methodist Church. She worked on the Schoharie County Republicans Committee for many years. Adelaide loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and also gardening and bird watching.

Adelaide is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas and Doreen Bush of Windsor; grandchildren, Alan and Kala Bush, and Brian and Melody Bush of Harpursville, Michael and Peggy Bush of Lexington; great-grandchildren, Jodie, David, Cody, Annie, Christopher, and Alysia; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Timothy Bush.

Funeral services will be held at the family plot in the Westkill Community Cemetery, Westkill, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, with the Rev. Martha Vink, former pastor of the Gilboa United Methodist Church, officiating.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be made in Adelaide's memory to the Gilboa United Methodist Church, Gilboa, N.Y. 12076.

Arrangements are under the directon of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Ethel Reynolds
UNADILLA — Ethel Adeline Reynolds of 198 Main St., Unadilla, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999.

Mrs. Reynolds was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Sidney Center, the daughter of Bart and Matie (Fitch) Dunshce.

She was a lifelong resident of the area.

On Oct. 6, 1934, in Cannonsville, she married Clinton Ernest Reynolds. They shared 55 years of marriage.

She was a member of the Unadilla Center United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Reynolds is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Edna and Lester Constable of Unadilla and Dale Roop of Burkeburnett,  Texas; her sons, Elmer Finch of Plattekill and Bruce Finch; her sister, Vivian Wilson of Masonville; many grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clinton, and her sons, Ernest and James.

Funeral services will be held at the Joyce Funeral Home, Main Street, Unadilla, on Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Norman Tiffany of Unadilla Center Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Carroll Cemetery, Trout Creek.

The family will receive friends at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc. on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Joyce Funeral Home Inc. of Unadilla.

Erika Jaeck
ONEONTA — Erika Jaeck of Oneonta passed away peacefuly at her residence after a short illness.

Mrs. Jaeck was born in Litzmannestadt, Germany, and was married to Wilhelm Jaeck in Wollmarshausen, Germany, in 1950.

She came to the United States with her husband and infant son in 1952, and established residency in New York City.

In 1959, the family moved to Oneonta, where they started WJ Auto Service, which later became Oneonta Auto Imports. Mr. and Mrs. Jaeck retired in 1978.

Mrs. Jaeck is survived by a son, Dietmar Jaeck, and his wife, Virgina; a daughter, Christiane, and her husband, Ronald Hughes of Oneonta; and five grandchildren, Gunnar, Alana and Kristoff Jaeck and Kimberly and Collin Hughes, all of Hartwick and Oneonta.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wilhelm.

Merle Charles Hall
NEW HARTFORD — Merle Charles Hall, 82, of Blackburn, Conn., passed away Aug. 13, 1999, at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 7, 1917, in Franklin, a daughter of the late Harold and Pearl Gregory Charles, and received her education in Sidney and Walton schools.

Merle lived in the Walton and Sidney Center areas prior to moving to Sauquoit in 1942. She worked in the Willowvale Bleachery for many years and later for Utica Drop Forge. On Jan. 18, 1964, she was married to Earl V. Hall in New Hartford. They then moved to Norwich and resided there until Earl's death on Feb. 17, 1987, when she returned to this area.

During her teen years, Merle played piano in her father's country and western band "The Catskill Ramblers," which was well-known in Delaware County and the surrounding area.

Merle was a member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Norwich.

She is survived by her sister, Betty C. Furner of Sauquoit; a brother-in-law, Arnold C. Trayhorn of Cascade, Mont.; her nephews and nieces, Scott and Deborah Furner, Barry and Dawn Furner and Brenda and Stanley Kosakowski all of Sauquoit, Laurie and Fred Evans of Auburn, Judy and Tim Lange of Rio Rancho, N.M., Sandra and Donald Thingvold of Rugby, N.D., Patricia and Lawrence Lilliquist of Minot, N.D. and several great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Letha Trayhorn and two brothers, Harold and Douglas Charles.

Merle was very loving and giving to her sister and family and that love was returned by them many times over.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the J. Donald Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St., Sauquoit.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Merle's memory to the Liver Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis Society or the American Cancer Society.

Her family would like to extend a special thank-you to Jerry McConnell and Chris and Al Kozio for their kindness and caring during Merle's illness.
