June C. Beames
SIDNEY — June C. Beames, 85, of 21 Colegrove St., Sidney, passed away peacefully Monday morning, Aug. 16, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Jan. 27, 1914, in Delhi. June was the daughter of the late Gordon and Elizabeth Secord Coulter.

On Dec. 9, 1933, she married Raymond F. Beames Sr. in Otego. He predeceased her June 21, 1981.

Mrs. Beames had been a Sidney resident for the past 66 years. She was a retired employee in the accounting department at E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney.

She was a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, Sidney. She was also a former member of Sidney Chapter No. 255 O.E.S.

June is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, June and Leonard Alford Sr. of Bainbridge; son and daughter-in-law, Raymond F. and Sharon Beames Jr. of Gilbertsville; five grandchildren and spouses, Jennifer and Shane Martin, Sheryl and William Coughlin, Ronald A. Beames, Colette and Robert Ketzak and Leonard and Pamela Alford Jr.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her brother, Glen Coulter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Noreen Mooney, Bainbridge, officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Friends are invited to call after 3 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral chapel. Her family will be in attendance from 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad if desired.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Ronald M. Oelsner
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Ronald M. Oelsner, formerly of Bovina Center, N.Y., and a resident of the Albuquerque, N.M., area for 39 years, died suddenly Monday, Aug. 2, 1999.

Mr. Oelsner had retired from Sandia National Laboratories after 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret L. (Hilson) Oelsner of the family home; daughter, Kathy Oelsner-Sandoval, and her husband, Frank; son, Kurt A. Oelsner; granddaughter, Maggie Sandoval, all of Albuquerque, N.M.; and brother, Richard A. Oelsner and his wife, Marjorie, of Clinton Township, Mich.

Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will take place in Bovina Center.

Gerald W. Smith
PORT JEFFERSON — Gerald Waters Smith, 88, died Monday afternoon, Aug. 16, 1999, at Brookhaven Hospital in Patchogue.

Gerald was born July 22, 1911, in Oneonta, the son of Ford M. and Ella R. (Waters) Smith.

He married Dorothy E. Thompson on Jan. 6, 1934, in Oneonta. They were married for 60 years until her death on Nov. 3, 1994.

Gerald was a 1933 graduate of Hartwick College and was its first president of the Student Senate. He was a high school English teacher in Port  Jefferson from 1935 to 1945 and 1949 until his retirement in 1966. He was a member of the Port  Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department and served as its treasurer for nine years and secretary for 10 years. He was a member and a lifetime deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Port  Jefferson and his father, Ford Smith, was Sunday school superinterdent at First Baptist Church of Oneonta for many years.

Gerald is survived by his daughter, Barbara Smith Vidal of Port  Jefferson; and a son, John T. Smith of Uniondale; three grandchildren, Raquel Vidal-Chan of Garrison, Diego Vidal of Atlanta, Ga., and Daniela Vidal of Columbus, Ohio; and a brother, Ivan E. Smith of Stamford, Conn.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at the Smith family burial plot at Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Lois A. Yeagle, interim minister of the First Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, P.O. Box 96546,  Washington, DC, 20077-7257.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

John Gould Washbon
ROCKLEDGE, Fla. — John Gould Washbon, 82, of Rockledge, Fla., and Morris, N.Y., died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at home after a brief illness.

He was born May 15, 1916, in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, to Charles G. and Mary (Coldwell) Washbon. He moved with his family to Everglades City, Fla., in 1926, and resided in Florida for the remainder of his life.

He was married, in March 1942, to the former Virginia Eastmoore in Jacksonville, Fla., the daughter of the late Harold and Harriet (Manning) Eastmoore.

He enlisted in the United States Navy Air Reserve at the beginning of World War II and was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville.

In 1948, he moved to Miami, Fla., and held various positions in the construction and aviation industries until his retirement. A civil engineer by training and a chemical engineer by education, he attended the University of Florida and the University of Miami.

A passionate student of history, in retirement, John and his wife spent much of their time in Morris, lovingly restoring the home of his great-grandparents, Lucetta and Otis B. Matteson.

Although born in Canada and raised in Florida, John's roots lay deep in Otsego County. His fourth great-grandparents, Zebah and Nancy Washbon, natives of Newtown, Conn., homesteaded the Maple Grove area in about 1796. Five subsequent generations of Washbon sons lived in Morris and Maple Grove and attended the local schools. His maternal grandmother, the late Harriet (Matteson) Washbon, was the great-granddaughter of Deacon Joshua Matteson, a settler in the Mount Vision area from Pownal, Vt. Harriet's father, Otis B. Matteson, and his father, Joshua D. Matteson, ran a tannery on the brook running through the Matteson/Washbon homestead in Morris.

John Washbon is survived by his wife, Virginia; his sisters, Diana (Benjamin Lee) Bird of  Washington, Va., and Elizabeth (Leo) Horvath of McLean, Va.; a son, Thomas G. (Margaret) Washbon, and family of New Castle, Del.; a daughter, Janet Washbon, and family of Madison, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Alma C. Field of Merritt Island, Fla.; and brothers-in-law, Ray (Betty) Eastmoore of Port Saint John, Fla., Frederick (Betty) Eastmoore of Columbus, Ga., Eugene (Jeanine) Eastmoore of Palatka, Fla., and Charles B. Norton of Melrose, Fla.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Carolynn Washbon.

Graveside memorial services will be held Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at 3 p.m. at the Washbon family lot in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris, N.Y., with the Rev. John Scott III officiating.

Donations may be made to the Tebeau-Field Library of Florida History, 435 Brevard Ave., Cocoa, Florida 32922 or Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice, P.O. 6565002, Rockledge, Fla. 32956.

Local arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris, N.Y.

Barbara Carline
ONEONTA — Barbara (Bea) Carline, 88, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a brief illness.

She was born April 7, 1911, in Bloomville, the daughter of Nicholas and Margaret (Pizza) Rosher.

She was married to Peter Carline, who died in 1977.

Mrs. Carline was a lifelong area resident, a housewife and a former employee of the Oneonta Dress Co.

She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

Barbara is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, John and Betty Rosher of Oneonta; one sister and brother-in-law, Madeline and Jim Sommer of Oneonta; one sister-in-law, Edna Rosher of Oneonta; one stepson, John Carline of Morgantown, W.Va.; one stepdaughter, Adelaide Kerr of Reno, Nev.; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church at the convenience of the family. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

The family has requested that contributions be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

J. Harold Barber
HOBART — J. Harold Barber, 83, of Hobart, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at home.

He was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Grand Gorge, the son of James Stephen and Laura (McKee) Barber.

Harold married Pearl Haynes on Oct. 4, 1947, in the Bloomville United Methodist Church. As a dairy farmer, they lived together in Hobart on the family farm for many years. He liked to play cards, be outside cutting wood, going to auctions and especially having his family and friends around.

He was a graduate of Hobart High School; a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church, serving as trustee and on many committees; supervisor for the town of Harpersfield from 1978-81; served on the Delaware County Soil and Water Conservation District Board; and was on the Agway board of directors and the Hobart Fire Department where he was a rural fire commissioner for the district.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl, at home; daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Richard Kenyon of East Meredith, Carol and Steve Troskosky of Allegany and Mary and David Starr of Hyde Park; sons and daughter-in-law, David and Joyce Barber of Hobart and Stephen Barber of San Francisco,  Calif.; his grandchildren, Amy, Meg, Jo, Mark and Beth Kenyon, Christopher and Cathlyn Troskosky and Lisa, Sara and David Starr; and two sisters, Elizabeth Kunpf of Warwick and Myrtle Dent of Oneonta.

Three sisters, Mildred, Helen, and Dorothy; a brother, William; and stepbrother, Albert Hadden; predeceased him.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Hobart United Methodist Church with Pastor Richard Elder officiating.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that memorials go to the Hobart United Methodist Church, Maple Avenue, Hobart, N.Y. 13788.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Esther M. Butler
OTEGO — Esther M. Butler, 87, formerly of Otego, died Thursday morning, Aug. 19, 1999, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

Esther was born Oct. 26, 1911, in Meredith, the daughter of Parker W. and Mary (Smith) Shaw.

She married Howard Butler on July 29, 1933, in the Meredith Baptist Church. They were married for 57 years until Howard's death on Jan. 2, 1991.

Esther was a long-time member of the Otego Baptist Church.

She retired in 1974 from Bendix Corp. in Sidney after 25 years of employment.

Esther is survived by five children, Howard G. Butler of Sidney, Albert E. and Sylvia Butler of Henderson, Nev., David P. and Gail Butler of Fly Creek, Stephen R. and Judy Butler of Otego and Mary A. Hoffmans of West Lake, La., and Cooperstown; a sister, Elizabeth Blanchard of Unadilla; five brothers, Sheldon Shaw of Delhi, Ben Shaw of Meredith, David Shaw of Delhi, Oliver Shaw of Otego and Paul Shaw of Meredith; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at the Otego Baptist Church, Otego, with her pastor, the Rev. Alan C. Hatch, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Save Our Children of the Otego Baptist Church or the Otego Volunteer Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Karen-Leigh Olmstead
BINGHAMTON — Karen-Leigh Olmstead, 54, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital after a short illness.

She was predeceased by her father, Carl Hunt.

She is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Gerard T. Olmstead of Binghamton; a son, Timothy J. Olmstead Sr. of Binghamton; a daughter and son-in-law, Christina M. and Andrew J. Spisak of Harleyville, Pa.; three grandchildren, Timothy J. Olmstead Jr., Thomas L. Olmstead and Theodore S. Spisak; her mother, Sadie Hunt; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Gary Schneider, all of Oneonta; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Ginny Hunt of Dearborn Heights, Mich.; an aunt, Mary Russell of Cooperstown; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was a member of Women of the Moose, Lodge 207 in  Johnson City and American Legion Post 1305 Women's Auxiliary, Binghamton.

Funeral services will be held at J.F. Rice Funeral Home Inc., 150 Main St.,  Johnson City, on Friday at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Floral Park Cemetery,  Johnson City.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 12p.m.-1 p.m.

Janis J. Brown
DELHI — Janis J. Brown, 75, of Sherwoods, Delhi, died Saturday night, Aug. 21, 1999, at O'Connor Hospital, following an extended illness.

She was born Jan. 5, 1924, in Roxbury, the daughter of Clarence S. and Cora (Peet) Bellows, and was a graduate of Roxbury High School.

She married Robert S. Brown on Aug. 10, 1950, in Hamden.

A homemaker and 50-year Delhi resident, she made her family and home her primary interests thoughout her life.

Mr. Brown died Oct. 9, 1976, and in 1977, Janis entered the employ of the Delaware National Bank of Delhi, as a teller, until her retirement 10 years ago.

Surviving are her five children, Barbara (Wyman) Ansley of Jamestown, Betsy (Scott) Clark of Delhi, Lynda (Robert) Mason of San Antonio,  Texas, Robert (Terri) Brown of Penfield, and Margaret Brown of Delhi; eight grandchildren; Kristen and Marissa Mason, Christopher and Sean Clark, Ryan and Kyle Brown, Lisa Holland and Erik Ansley; one great-grandson, Lucas Holland; two brothers, C. Hilton Bellows of Scotia and Clayton Bellows of Morris; and nine nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Muriel Bellows, and a brother, Nelson S. Bellows.

Friends are invited to call this evening at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance, from 7 to 9 and where funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, by the Rev. Arvid Whitmore, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the West Delhi Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to O'Connor Hospital in her memory.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Thomas Z. Trowbridge
BOVINA — Thomas Z. Trowbridge, 62, of Bovina (Andes R.D.) died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon, Aug. 21, 1999, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born June 21, 1937, in Margaretville, the son of Frank E. and Corinne (Sanford) Trowbridge.

A lifelong area resident, he grew up in Margaretville, where he graduated high school in 1955, later serving in the United States Army, (1960-62) as a chaplain's assistant, stationed in Germany.

He married Grace E. Keister on Nov. 20, 1965, in Oneonta.

A production analyst, he was employed by E.C.D. Bendix, Sidney for 30 years, retiring in 1987.

From an early age, Tom was musically inclined. He was a talented organist who possessed an easy and relaxed keyboard tempo. A longtime member of St. James Episcopal Church, Lake Delaware, he was church organist for 23 years and served on the parish council and alter guild; he was also an active member of the Delhi Masonic Lodge No. 439, which he also served as organist.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Grace E. Trowbridge; one daughter, Cynthia (Ralph) Thieleman of Durham, N.C.; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Corinne and Hannah Marie Thieleman; a brother, Stephen F. (Diane) Trowbridge of Cohoes; an aunt, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, James I. Trowbridge in 1998.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance and the Delhi Masonic Lodge will conduct services at 7 p.m.

A Requiem Celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at St. James Episcopal Church, Lake Delaware. The Rev. Frank Crenshaw, rector, will officiate, and burial will follow in the Sanford Cemetery, New Kingston, where military honors will be accorded by Donald W. Gleason American Legion Post No. 190.

Contributions may be made to the Bovina Emergency Squad in his memory.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Arlene M. Alpaugh
CORTLAND — Ms. Arlene M. Alpaugh, 56, passed away Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at the home of her mother in Cherry Valley after living with cancer for more than four years.

She was born Aug. 14, 1943, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Clyde and Mary (McFee) Alpaugh.

Arlene was a 1961 graduate of Cherry Valley Central School and earned her bachelor's degree in 1965 from the State University College at Platsburgh. She had lived in Cortland for 34 years, receiving her master's degree from the State University College at Cortland and working as a nurse for SUNY Cortland for 12 years and the Cortland County Health Department for 22 years.

She was a member of the American Association of Nurses, an active member of AAUW Cortland Chapter, past officer and board member of the YWCA, and Headstart Policy Council member.

Arlene is survived by her mother, Mary Alpaugh of Cherry Valley; a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Linda Alpaugh of Rochester; two nephews, Scott Alpaugh of the USMA, West Point, Matt Alpaugh of Auburn University, Auburn, Ala.; several aunts, an uncle, cousins, and a host of friends.

Arlene was predeceased by her father, Clyde Alpaugh, in 1989.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at 2 p.m. in the United Methodist Church, Cherry Valley, with Mr. Lyman  Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
