Gerald Goodrich
CAPE VINCENT — Gerald Lavern Goodrich, 78, of Cape Vincent, and Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Schenevus died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Watertown.

He was born Sept. 15, 1920, in Eaton, the son of Howard and Minnie (O'Dell) Goodrich.

He married Geraldine Frances Goodrich on June 23, 1951, in Hackensack, N.J.

Jerry was a United States Army veteran serving in Europe in World War II in the Medics.

Jerry was head custodian at Schenevus Central School, retiring in 1985. He was the former owner of Jerry's Mobil Station in Schenevus for 25 years.

Jerry was a charter member of the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad and the Schenevus VFW Post 2752, he was a member of the C.H. Hose Co. in Schenevus, the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge No. 592, the DAV, the Schenevus Rotary, the Elks Lodge Post 2731 in Zephyrhills, Fla. He was a former councilman of the Town of Maryland, a former trustee for the Schenevus Cemetery Association and was a vestry of the Church of The Holy Spirit in Schenevus.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Geraldine Frances Goodrich of Cape Vincent and Zephyrhills, Fla.; children, Lynette and her husband, Gordon Dilmore of Queensberry, Julie and her husband, Kurt Schulte of Oneonta, Susan and her husband, Dr. Roy Fazendeiro of New Bedford, Mass. and Ronald Farris of Newton, Mass.; grandchildren, Eugene Duplissis, Rory Fazendeiro, Tedra Fazendeiro, Matthew Schulte, Laura Schulte and David Schulte; sister, Lina Mueller of Melborne, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Edith Rutt and Meribeth Hill and a brother, Everett Goodrich.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch Street, Schenevus.

Freida Richardson
RAYMONDVILLE — Funeral services for Mrs. Freida McNulty Richardson, age 87, will be held Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at 11 a.m. at St. Raymond's Church in Raymondville with the Rev. Everett Denesha, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Norwood. Friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mrs. Richardson was a former resident of the Stark Road in Raymondville and died at the Highland Nursing Home in Massena on Sunday evening, Aug. 22, 1999. She had resided at the Highland Nursing Home in Massena, since May 10, 1996.

Freida is survived by her husband, E. Lyle of Raymondville; her son, Patrick of Raymondville; her daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Suzanne) Murray of Raymondville; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Mrs. Rev. Harry (Ann) Myers of West Oneonta.

Mrs. Richardson was born in Chateaugay on Aug. 14, 1912, to Fred and Martha Shepard Laramay.

She married Francis McNulty on Dec. 2, 1950, and he died on Sept. 17, 1979. She later married Lyle Richardson on Nov. 28, 1985.

She was a homemaker and an elementary school teacher and was employed in the Johnston School District, the Margaretville School District, the Nedrow School District and the Massena School District. She was a substitute school teacher in the Norwood Norfolk School District.

She was a member of St. Raymond's Church in Raymondville, the Lyra Chapter No. 230 Order of the Eastern Star in Norwood and was also a Past Matron; the AAUW in Potsdam. She also organized the L.I.F.T. organization for widows and widowers.

There will be an Eastern Star service at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by Buck Funeral Homes Inc., Norwood.

Robert Umbach
FLORIDA — Robert Umbach, 80, of Dade City Fla. died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at the West Brooke Manor in Zephyrhills, Fla.

He was born Oct. 12, 1918, in Worcester, N.Y., the son of Frank and Emma (Reller) Umbach.

He married Anna Heldie on April 30, 1946, in Hobart, N.Y.

He grew up in Worcester, N.Y. He served five years with the 105th F.A.; 27th Division during World War II.

He was a heavy equipment operator and resided in Saugerties, N.Y. before retiring and moving to Florida.

Robert is survived by his wife, Anna of Dade City, Fla.; a son, Robert Jr. of Twin Falls, Idaho; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda J. (Umbach) and Donald Miller of Mount Morris N.Y.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and several cousins; one Aunt (Jennie) wife of the late Ernest Umbach.

He was cremated and his remains are at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

A memorial service will be held in this area at a later date.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Robert to Pasco Hernando County Hospice, Fort King Road Zephyrhills, Fla. 33541.

Christine L. Markert
DAVENPORT CENTER — Christine L. Markert, 85, of Davenport Center, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at Delaware County Countryside Care in Delhi.

She was born Oct. 22, 1913, in Union Course, Long Island, the daughter of Fred and Machdelina (Groh) Kuhn.

She was married to the late Harold E. Markert Sr. He passed away April 14, 1999, at the Delaware County Countryside Care.

Mr. and Mrs. Markert were both active members of the Davenport United Methodist Church, Davenport Historical Society and lived in the Davenport area for 31 years.

They are survived by one son.

Graveside services for Mr. and Mrs. Markert will be announced at a later date to take place at the Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport.

Contributions in their memory may be made to the Davenport United Methodist Church or the Davenport Historical Society.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Bernice Davis
SCHENECTADY — Bernice Chichester Davis died Aug. 27, 1999, at home.

She was born Dec. 8, 1930, in the town of Stamford, grew up in South Kortright and graduated from SKCS in the Class of 1948.

She graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in September 1951 as a registered nurse.

She married Walter J. Davis on Nov. 25, 1951.

She worked at several hospitals and at Hallmark Nursing Home. She enjoyed traveling, cross stitch, quilting and crocheting.

She is survived by her husband, Walter, of 47 years; three daughters, Diana of Milford, Mass., Debra Shaver of Schenectady and Beverly and her husband, Charles Carroll, of Clifton Park and their children Nicole, Vanessa, Trishia and Melanie; a son, James, and his wife, Sandra, of Clifton Park and their children, Jared, Craig and Carissa. She is also survived by four sisters, Beatrice (her twin) and her husband, Edward Nichols, of Bloomville, Laura Kerr of St. James, Marjorie Milewski of Bolivia, N.C., and Sylvia and her husband, James Ackerson, of Southport, N.C.; two brothers, Seth and his wife, Marlene, of Hannawa Falls and Stanley and his wife, Helen, of Crystal River, Fla.

Also surviving are many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

She is giving her body to Albany Medical College for science research.

Gladys F. Rogers
ONEONTA — Gladys F. Rogers, 94, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born April 26, 1905, the daughter of Captain and Mrs. Thomas G. Fenner.

She lived at the family homestead in Center Moriches, Long Island, until 1984 when she moved to Oneonta. She was married to the late Vernon A. Rogers Sr. and is survived by their two sons, Boyce F. Rogers of Oneonta and Vernon A. Rogers Jr. of Clementon, N.J. In addition, she is survived by six grandchildren: Allen Rogers, Sabrina Rogers, David Rogers, Robert Rogers, Nancy Rogers and Susan Hutzel. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Rogers was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta and the local chapter of the D.A.R.

Her family will be in attendance for calling hours from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home. Funeral service is at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Marie King, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial will follow at Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Beatrice C. Cole
MARYLAND — Beatrice C. Cole, 91, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at The Meadows in Middlefield, where she has resided since April of 1995.

She was born Oct. 26, 1907, in Schenevus, the daughter of La Vern and Madge (Sillman) Campbell.

She attended rural district school and graduated from Schenevus High School in 1924. She also attended Albany Business School.

Bea married Julian Cole of Oneonta on Sept. 12, 1925, in North Creek. They resided in Oneonta, and lived there until 1945, when they moved to Portlandville and then in 1961 moved to Maryland.

Bea was the cafeteria manager at Portlandville School from 1949 to 1963. She was then employed as a clerk in the Maryland Post Office from 1968 to 1975.

Bea was a member of the First Baptist Church in Schenevus, since 1920, the Schenevus Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 138, and the Schenevus "Young at Heart" Club.

Bea is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard W. and Pauline Cole of Maryland; her grandchildren, William and Ruth Cole of Willow Springs, N.C., Jack and Sue Cole of Oneonta and Brian and Barbara Gerth of Maryland; great-grandchildren, Erik Cole, Cynthia Fowler and Biz, Dan and Tim Cole; great-great-grandson, William Fowler; a foster sister, Beverly Nichols Hamill of Kensington, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Julian in December of 1974, and her brother, George in November 1993.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus, with the Rev. William Robert Thompson, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Schenevus, officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Bea to First Baptist Church, Missionary Ministry, P.O. Box 187, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Marion Eklund
STAMFORD — Marion Eklund, 78, of Eklund Road, Stamford died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at her residence.

She was born July 13, 1921, in Brooklyn, the daughter of William J. and Helen (Abel) Hatfield Jr.

She married Einar A. Eklund on Dec. 29, 1939, in Tarrytown.

Marion graduated from  Washington Irving High School in Tarrytown in 1939, and received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Russell Sage College in Troy in 1943. She taught school in the Hartsdale and Schoharie school systems for several years.

Marion moved to Stamford 53 years ago from Tarrytown. For 45 years she was the bookkeeper for the family business, Eklund Farm Machinery.

Marion was a member of the Stamford United Methodist Church and Sunday School Superintendent for several years. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Stamford Golf Club and a former trustee of the club's board.

Marion is survived by her husband, Einar A. Eklund of Stamford; daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Tobie Anderson of Slingerlands and Susan and Charles Pinkey of Worcester; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Diane Eklund of Stamford; grandchildren, Lauren, Jill, Adam, Kimberly, Brian, Bill, Jim, Amy and Beth. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers, Richard and William Hatfield.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at the Stamford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends may call at their convenience at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, after 3 p.m., Tuesday. The family will be in attendance between 7 and 9 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Marion's memory to the R.A. Robinson Emergency Squad, Main Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Florence Filkin
ONEONTA — Florence (Betty) Filkin, 75, of Oneonta died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born March 30, 1924, in Troy, the daughter of Michael and Mary Ellen (McGowen) Ryan.

She married William P. Filkin in 1947, in Troy. Mr. Filkin died in 1968.

For 30 years Betty was employed by the State University College at Oneonta, as a secretary, having retired in 1982. She was a 50-year resident of Oneonta, having previously resided in Troy. Mrs. Filkin was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church of Oneonta. She graduated from Troy High School and the Mildred Elly Secretary College of Albany, Class of 1945.

Florence is survived by a daughter, Penelope J. Filkin of Oneonta; a son, Jeffery A. Filkin and his wife, Michelle of Schenectady; and a grandson, Perry R. Filkin of Schenectady; a brother, Edward A. Ryan; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke.

Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Helen Finch
UNADILLA — Helen Finch, 73, of Martin Brook Road, Unadilla, passed away peacefully at her home, Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, after an extended illness.

Helen was born March 3, 1926, in Walton, the daughter of the late Harry and Elnora (VanDervort) Jenkins Sr.

She was a longtime resident of Unadilla. She worked at Keith Clark Inc., in Sidney, until her retirement in 1988.

Helen is survived by her longtime companion, Richard Beers; one son, Rex Finch of Dallas,  Texas; three daughters, Judy Wright of Unadilla, Janet Finch of Mount Upton, and Janice Mattice of Gastonia, N.C.; one daughter-in-law, Marie Livingston of Unadilla; the children of her companion, Anne Thompson of Unadilla and Richard Beers of Rock Gap, Va.; 22 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie McCall of Walton; two sisters-in-law, Velma Jenkins of Arizona and Louise Jenkins of Corinth; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

Helen was predeceased by three sons, Glenn Bryden Jr., Elmer Finch Jr., and Roger Finch Sr., one grandson, Roger Finch Jr., two sisters, Naomi (Peg) Croop and Gertrude Spicer, three brothers, Douglas, Lester and Harry Jenkins Jr.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Lyon Bros.-Way Chapel, 102 Delaware St., Walton, with the Rev. Norman Tiffany, pastor of the Unadilla Center United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Walton Cemetery, Walton.

The family will be present at the Lyon Bros.-Way Chapel today from 7 to 9 p.m. when those who wish may call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Helen Finch.

Funeral arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., Walton.

Gordon Mowers
ONEONTA — Gordon "Gordie" Mowers, 70, of Oneonta, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at the A.0. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

Gordon was born April 29, 1929, in Worcester, the son of Owen C. and Iva (Kenyon) Mowers.

He married Betty Kingsley on Oct. 13, 1950, in Bainbridge.

He attended Worcester schools. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Gordie owned and operated Southside Gulf and also Mower's Towing of Oneonta. He was a member of the Oneonta Moose Club.

Gordie is survived by his loving wife, Betty of Oneonta; four children, Gerald Mowers of Oneonta, Vickie and Merritt Hunt of Oneonta, Rod and Patti Mowers of Unadilla, and Randy and Karen Mowers of Oneonta; five grandchildren, Angela Romeo of Georgia, Danny Otten of Oneonta, Kristen Mowers of Oneonta, Jeffrey Mowers of Oneonta and Cherokee June Mowers of Unadilla; six stepgrandchildren; one sister, Millie Mattice of Gilboa; and one brother, Bill Mowers of Florida; several nieces and nephews and very special friends, Bob and Lucy Ingalls of Oneonta.

Gordon was predeceased by one sister, Marie Foot, and two brothers, Charles and Kenneth Mowers.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at 11 a.m. from the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, corner of Grand and Division street, Oneonta. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the A.0. Fox Nursing Home, 1 Norton Ave., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Gordon "Gordie" Mowers.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Richard Treadwell
JEFFERSON — Richard J. Treadwell, 62, of N. Harpersfield Road,  Jefferson died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at his residence.

He was born April 30, 1937, in  Jefferson, the son of Morton F. and Meredith (Nichols) Treadwell.

Rich was married to Freda Nelson on Aug. 28, 1971, in Cobleskill.

He was a lifelong  Jefferson resident, where he owned and operated a dairy farm. Rich graduated from  Jefferson Central School in 1955, where he played baseball and basketball. In 1957, he graduated from the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill.

He was a member of the  Jefferson United Methodist Church, a councilman of the  Jefferson Town Board, a director of the Eastern Mutual Insurance Co. at Greenville, a former member of the  Jefferson Fire Department, and former trustee and caretaker of the  Jefferson Evergreen Cemetery Association. He was also a substitute custodian for the  Jefferson Central School.

Rich had a deep devotion and love for his family and enjoyed talking with people. His caring and pleasant nature will be missed by all. He enjoyed the outdoors, and was a sports enthusiast, especially baseball. For many years he was a member of the  Jefferson softball team. Watching his children participate in sports was most comforting for him the last few years.

Rich is survived by his wife, Freda Treadwell of  Jefferson; his daughters, Kelly and Rebecca Treadwell of  Jefferson; his sons, John and Bryan Treadwell of  Jefferson; his mother, Meredith Treadwell of Schoharie; a sister, Margaret Emmerich of Berne; a brother and sister-in-law, Randall and Ruth Treadwell of Rome; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at the  Jefferson United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Gockel, pastor, officiating. The burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson. Friends may call at their convenience thi afternoon and evening at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 West Main St., Stamford. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Rich's memory to either the  Jefferson Fire Department,  Jefferson, N.Y. 12093 or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.
