Evelyn Cleveland
ONEONTA — Mrs. Evelyn B. Cleveland, 84, of Oneonta, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 20, 1914, in Oneonta, the daughter of Howard L. and Birdie Cole Allen.

Evelyn married Kenneth A. Cleveland on Oct. 2, 1935, in Harpursville. He died Sept. 29, 1990.

A lifelong resident Evelyn attended Oneonta Schools through the eighth grade and later attended Afton High School in Afton and graduated in 1933.

For many years she was employed by Gladys and Axel Axhoj as a bookkeeper for the former Winney Hill Lumber Co., Oneonta, which later became Agway. She retired from Agway many years ago.

She enjoyed her bridge games, dancing and traveling, a highlight was her trip to Hawaii.

Evelyn was the longest time member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta and a member of the Ladies of the Elks.

Evelyn is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Dennis Corna, Nancy and Robert Smalley, all of Oneonta, and Gail and Brian Hess; one sister, Myrtle Allen Gilmore of Flower Mound,  Texas; five grandchildren, Denise Corna, Christopher Corna and his wife, Lori, Ryan Smalley, and Bradley and Kyle Hess; one great-grandson, Brandon Corna; one niece, Margaret Hersh; and one nephew, Allen Gilmore. She is also survived by several cousins.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Fiske, retired Methodist Minister, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Evelyn B. Cleveland.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Marion Eklund
STAMFORD — Marion Eklund, 78, of Eklund Road, Stamford, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at her residence.

She was born July 13, 1921, in Brooklyn, the daughter of William J. and Helen (Abel) Hatfield Jr.

She married Einar A. Eklund on Dec. 29, 1946, in Tarrytown.

Marion graduated from  Washington Irving High School in Tarrytown in 1939, and received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Russell Sage College in Troy in 1943. She taught school in the Hartsdale and Schoharie school systems for several years.

Marion moved to Stamford 53 years ago from Tarrytown. For 45 years she was the bookkeeper for the family business, Eklund Farm Machinery.

Marion was a member of the Stamford United Methodist Church and Sunday school superintendent for several years. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Stamford Golf Club and a former trustee of the club's board. In 1982, she was Stamford Golf Club champion.

Marion is survived by her husband, Einar A. Eklund of Stamford; daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Tobie Anderson of Slingerlands and Susan and Charles Pinkey of Worcester; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Diane Eklund of Stamford; grandchildren, Lauren, Jill, Adam, Kimberly, Brian, Bill, Jim, Amy and Beth. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers, Richard and William Hatfield.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at the Stamford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends may call at their convenience at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, after 3 p.m., Tuesday. The family will be in attendance between 7 and 9 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Marion's memory to the R.A. Robinson Emergency Squad, Main Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Helmut Fauth
JEFFERSON — Helmut Fauth, 73, of  Jefferson, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown after a sudden illness.

He was born on Oct. 30, 1925, in Schwabisch Gmund, Germany, he was the only son of Adolf and Theresia (Hieber) Fauth.

Helmut grew up in Astoria, and later moved with his family to Yaphank, Long Island.

He served in the United States Army during World War II with the 88th Division in Italy.

Helmut was employed at Fairchild Republic and Grumman on Long Island. He was also a self-employed carpenter for many years. He was a fine carpenter, who built things to last. Even in retirement, his talents were in continuous demand to build things for everyone in the family.

He loved living in the country, working in the garden, cutting wood, and generally puttering around the house.

He was proud of his family, and well loved by them.

Helmut is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy (Koch) Fauth of  Jefferson; two sons, Walter and his wife, Susan of Hopewell Junction and Paul and his wife, Cathy of Warner-Robins, Ga.; two daughters, Linda (Fauth) Kennelly and her husband, James of Cambridge and Helen (Fauth) Rockwell and her husband, David of  Jefferson. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Michael, Peter, Cody,  Taylor Marie, and Erik Fauth, Brendan and Terence Kennelly, and Meghan and Kristofer Rockwell.

Friends and relatives are invited to call Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. A prayer service will be conducted at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, with Fr. Edward Golding of St. Anna Church, Summit, officiating. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson.

The family suggests that memorials take the form of donations to either the  Jefferson Rescue Squad or the Humane Society of Delaware County.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

John A. Jubar
ONEONTA — John A. Jubar, 74, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Jubar was born in Meridale on Sept. 25, 1924, the son of Oliver H. and Irene (Ackerly) Jubar.

He married Mabel Burgher on Sept. 20, 1943, in Oneonta.

Mr. Jubar lived in Oneonta most of his life. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked for the D&H Railroad, Baldo Pontiac, Munson Brothers, Putman Motors of Oneonta and East End Coin Laundry.

Mr. Jubar was a member and deacon at the Word of Faith Fellowship Church in Maryland.

Mr. Jubar is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mabel F. (Burgher) Jubar of Oneonta; five daughters and son-in-laws, Audrey and Edward Wenck of Oneonta, Doris and Charles Holcomb of Otego, Sharon and Lewis Phelps of Hyannis, Mass., Dolores and Roger Dibble of Hamden, and Mary Jane and William Buel of Delhi; two sons and daughter-in-laws, Richard and Peggy Jubar and Dan and Rose Jubar; and a son, Robert Jubar, all of Oneonta; two sisters, Florence Everts of Gansevoort and Helen  Jones of Walton; one brother, Frederick Jubar of Otego; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Jubar was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Herman, Carl and Charles Jubar; and a special sister-in-law, Marion.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Frank W. MacCracken Sr. and Frank W. MacCracken Jr., of the Word of Faith Fellowship Church in Maryland, officiating. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Word of Faith Fellowship Church in Mr. Jubar's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

James L. Finkle
ANDES — A graveside funeral service for James L. Finkle, 69, of Andes, who passed away Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi, will be held graveside at Andes Cemetery, Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at 1 p.m. following cremation. The Rev. Daniel McCollister of the Andes Presbyterian Church will officiate.

James was born in Andes, Nov. 19, 1929, the son of James M. and Flora D. (Ruff) Finkle.

He has been a resident of this community his entire lifetime.

He was married to Frances Ellett on Oct. 3, 1953, in Downsville.

He had been a grounds keeper at the State University College of Technology at Delhi for 30 years, retiring in 1993.

James is survived by his father, James M. Finkle of Andes; his wife, Francis Finkle of Andes; two sons, Mark and his wife, Suzan Finkle, of Margate, Fla., and Gary of Delhi; one daughter, Ellen and her husband, Daniel Ciferri, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Persons wishing, may make contributions to the Andes Emergency Squad in his name.

There are no calling hours, but friends and family may call at the family home on High Street, Andes.

Arrangements are by the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home, Andes.

Frank Wenz II
BURLINGTON GREEN — Frank "Bud" Wenz II, of Burlington Green, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 30, 1999.

Frank was born Sept. 5, 1921, in Whitesboro, the son of Frank H. and Ethel E. (Ellis) Wenz.

On Nov. 26, 1944, he married Betty Davis. She predeceased him on April 8, 1995.

Frank was a dairy farmer in Burlington Green for more than 40 years. He owned and operated a cattle trucking business from 1944-1954, was also employed by Humphrey  Jones Gravel Pit, and during World War II worked for Savage Arms in Utica.

Frank was a man who never let life's obstacles stop him, hinder him maybe, but rather they strengthened him. He was very talented with his hand, including the transformation of antique toys. He enjoyed being active in the New York State Tractor Pullers Association, and the Ostego County Tractor Pullers.

Frank was a special man who was dearly loved by his family and sister.

Frank is survived by his children and their spouses, Faith and Rex Yurenka and Frank and Linda Wenz III, all of Burlington Green; his grandchildren, Steven Yurenka of Burlington Green, Ann Yurenka of Vernon, Jennifer and Larry Truax Jr. of New Berlin and Frank H. Wenz IV of Burlington Green; his great-grandchildren, Kayla and Ashley Eldred and Jessie James and Nathanyal Jean Truax; his sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne "Honey" W. and Justin A. Donahue; and his nieces and nephews, Justin W. Donahue, Jacquelyn E. Donahue, Jeannine M. Donahue and Frederick Wenz; and a special sister-in-law, Nellie Meeker.

He was also predeceased by his brother, Frederick Wenz.

Funeral services are Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at noon at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Young officiating. Calling hours are Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-noon at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Patrick E. Mayes
DAVENPORT CENTER — Mr. Patrick E. Mayes, 48, of Davenport Center, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 24, 1951, the son of James and Jeanne McConnell Mayes.

Pat was employed by the Southside Mall, Oneonta, in the maintenance department. He has lived in the greater-Oneonta area all his life. He enjoyed being with people and animals. He loved old cars and trains.

Pat is survived by two cousins, Mary Ann Helmer of Davenport Center and Joseph D. Kattanick of Oregon City, Ore.; one uncle, Vincent B. Kattanick of New Orleans, La.; and by a dear friend, Robert Hewitt of Boca Raton, Fla.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Michael.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Fiske, retired Methodist Minister, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, from 11:30-12:30 p.m. when the family will be present.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 in memory of Patrick E. Mayes.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Earl Feinman
EAST AURORA — Earl S. Feinman, 69, of East Aurora, and formerly of Hartwick Seminary, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 31, 1999, at his home.

He was born on Dec. 24, 1929, in Wakefield, R.I., a son of Joseph and Tillie (Broadman) Feinman.

He married Shirley Hodgkins on Aug. 2, 1959, in Auburn, Maine.

A 1947 graduate of Rogers High School in Newport, R.I., Earl entered the United States Army Air Force in 1948, serving as a staff sergeant in Okinawa, during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge in 1952, he enrolled at the University of Rhode Island on the GI Bill, earning his bachelor's of science degree in animal husbandry in 1956.

After graduation, Earl was employed by GLF in Boonville. In September of 1956 he became the dairy agent for the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Otsego County. In 1965, he became the agricultural division leader and remained in that position until his retirement in 1984. During his career he earned his master's of science degree from Cornell University in 1967, led the Dow Study Tour in 1979, and became the president of the New York State Association of County Agricultural Agents in 1977. That year he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents.

Following his retirement, Earl was employed by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Cooperstown Agway. In 1988, he and Shirley became part-time residents of Mesa, Ariz., and he became active as a member of the board of directors of the Condominium Association.

One of Earl's greatest accomplishments was being a loving husband and father.

Earl is survived by his wife of 40 years, Shirley; his son, Mark of Tempe, Ariz.; his daughter, Michele E. Wieber, her husband, Robert, and their children, Robby, Kristen and Natalie, all of South Wales; his brother, David Feinman of Bristol, R.I.; his sister, Selma Nisson of Newton, Mass.; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Stephen J. Quinlan, co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, officiating. Burial will be private in Green, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts be made to the Hospice Foundation, 225 Como Park Boulevard, Cheektowaga, N.Y. 14227-1480.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Lottie Merwin
ONEONTA — Lottie Belle Pierce Merwin, 82, of Southside Drive, Oneonta passed away peacefully at her home with her family at her side on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999.

She was born Sept. 12, 1916, to Fred Harris and Maude Reed Oakley of Gilboa.

She received her education at Grand Gorge Central School.

She married Thomas Dunbar Pierce who died Aug. 1, 1979. She later married George B. Merwin of Rochester on Oct. 31, 1976. He died March 29, 1985.

Surviving children are Mrs. Richard (Carol M. Pierce) Worden of Oneonta, Mrs. Frederick (Arlene F. Pierce) Knapp of Fly Creek, Thomas E. and Sandy Pierce of Lantana, Fla., Charles F. Pierce of Otego, David K. and Judith A. Pierce of Milford, and Paul E. and Emily Pierce of Bowie, Md. Her extended family includes 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; her sister, Jessie Mondore is from LaFayette, and brothers, Virgil and Imer, from Hobart; and a sister-in-law, Goldie Oakley, from South Gilboa.

She is predeceased by three brothers, Fred Jr., Victor and Luther; and one grandson.

She loved her family, especially the reunions; flowers, crocheting; her neighbors Mary and Phil; and life. She will be missed by all.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to the Salvation Army, River Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Lottie.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, from Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Nancy Kozlowski, pastor of the Milford United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends may call at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, before the service.

Burial will be in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery, Fly Creek.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Josephine Griswold
UNADILLA — Josephine L. Griswold, 87, of The Hampshire House, Oneonta, and formerly of Unadilla, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 16, 1911, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Charles and Mary (Knickerbacher) Mesic.

She was married to Melvin O. Griswold in October of 1935. Mr. Griswold died in 1972.

Mrs. Griswold was a resident of Unadilla, from 1945 until February of 1998, when she made her residence at The Hampshire House in Oneonta.

She was a retired employee of Amphenol Corp. of Sidney.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Unadilla and involved with many of the activities of the church, Unadilla Grange, the Wells Bridge and Unadilla Senior Citizens, and was a former member of the Unadilla Women's Club, and the OES Chapter No. 179 of Unadilla.

Josephine is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Nicholas Waytowich of Williamsburg, Va.; a son, Gary Griswold of Edmeston; four grandsons, Howard, Stephen, David and Mark Paris; six great-grandchildren; two nieces; and three nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at the First Presbyterian Church, Unadilla, with the Rev. Helen A. Havlik, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 112 Main St., Unadilla, Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at their convenience. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Unadilla.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Marjorie Richards
SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Marjorie D. Richards, 83, of South New Berlin, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

She was born to the late Ernest and Neva  Jones Davis on Sept. 20, 1915, in Cassville.

Marjorie married Herbert Richards on May 19, 1956, in Mount Vision.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Mount Upton.

Marjorie was known for her crafts and traveled to many craft shows. Marjorie was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, as a gauge inspector until 1977.

Marjorie is survived by her husband, Herbert Richards of South New Berlin; her daughter and son-in-law, Faith and Ralph Jeffrey of Norwich; her brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Ruth Davis of Sherburne; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Ray Davis.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at the First Baptist Church, Mount Upton at 11 a.m.

Friends may call Thursday, Sept. 2. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Mount Upton.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc. Sidney.
