Desolina Cimelli
HOBART — Desolina Cimelli, 93, of Hobart, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born April 25, 1906, in Ladd, Ill., the daughter of Antonio and Maria (Demarchi) Polli, and married the late Louis Cimelli.

Mrs. Cimelli moved to Hobart in 1973, and enjoyed membership in the Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, South Kortright, and the Stamford-Harpersfield Senior Citizens organization.

A son, Peter Cimelli; and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Louise Tanimac, both of New Jersey; four grandchildren, Susan and Peter Cimelli and Paul and Patrick Tanimac; and a niece and nephew survive her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus in South Kortright, with Fr. John Burns officiating. Calling hours will be tonight, Sept. 2, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, South Kortright, or the Hobart Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Gerald L. Goodrich
SCHENEVUS — A memorial service for Gerald L. Goodrich will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at the Schenevus Cemetery, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.0. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating. Also participating in the service will be the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge No. 592 and full military honors will be presented by the Schenevus VFW, Post 2752.
Contributions may be made in loving memory of Jerry to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Theodore Christman
ONEONTA — Theodore "Ted" Christman, 61, of Oneonta, died suddenly Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at the A.0. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Ted was born Jan. 13, 1938, in Cherry Valley, the son of Alexander and Theresa (Spencer) Christman.

He married Susan Leonard on May 3, 1964, in West Davenport.

Ted was a veteran having served in the United States Navy. He was an employee of the city of Oneonta for more than 30 years. He presently was the city of Oneonta parks supervisor.

Ted was a member of the River Street Baptist Church and served as a trustee and head usher. He was a board member of Opportunities for Otsego and was active in the Oneonta Little League for many years.

Ted is survived by his wife of 35 years, Susan Christman of Oneonta; a daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Shane Kneaskern; a son, Timothy Christman; and a grandson, Logan Kneaskern, all of Oneonta; his mother, Theresa Christman; and mother-in-law, Mona Delberta of Oneonta; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Clifford Simmons of Binghamton; two sisters, Nancy Tweedale and Susan Evans of Syracuse; four brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Charlyne Christman, Gary "Pete" and Joanna Christman of Oneonta, Charlie and Nancy Christman of Cooperstown and Albert and Paula Christman of Oneonta; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins; and his beloved church family.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 4 1999, at the River Street Baptist Church. His pastor, the Rev. Mel Farmer, will officiate. Burial will follow at the Milford Cemetery in Milford. The family will receive friends at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, Friday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the River Street Baptist Church, 133 River St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club, 70 River St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Helen A. Eckler
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Helen A. Eckler, 93, of Hyde Park, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at The Meadows.

Helen was born Aug. 5, 1906, a daughter of Bernard and Viola (Brown) Brady in the Thanksgiving Hospital in Cooperstown.

Helen attended the Cooperstown High School.

She married Harvey Eckler Jr. in November 1926, in Cooperstown.

Helen worked in the business office of Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital for 30 years, until her retirement.

She enjoyed baking, making candy and reading.

Helen is survived by her two sons and their wives, Harvey Eckler III and his wife, Alice, of Cooperstown and Walter and Dorothy Eckler of Cooperstown; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Gail and Stephen Nagel of Selkirk, Enid Kay and Edwin  White of Salisbury, Md., Harvey R. Eckler of Salt Lake City, Utah, Lorraine and Hector Garcia of Las Vegas, Nev., Shelley and Lynn Davidson of East Greenbush, Michael Scott and Michelle Eckler of East Greenbush, Bonita Kay and Paul Varney of Milford, Brenda Kay Eckler and Donald Gennett of Rotterdam and Bruce Kevin and Robin Eckler of Baldwinsville; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harvey Eckler Jr., on Feb. 22, 1969; two sisters, Enid Ellsworth and Katherine Johnson; and a brother, James Brady.

At the request of the family there will be a private service and no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the family plot at Lakewood Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Grant L. Hinman
MOUNT UPTON — Grant L. Hinman, 63, of Mount Upton, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at his home. So now the Candyman is passing out candy in Heaven.

He was born to the late Grant and Ethel Harvey Hinman on Aug. 12, 1936, in Guilford.

Grant married Julia Gage on Sept. 29, 1956, in Guilford.

He was a heavy machine operator for Chenango County Highway Department, Norwich, until he retired after working there for 34 years. Grant was also a member of the Mount Upton Fire Department.

He enjoyed farming and cutting firewood, and loved to pass out candy to everyone he met.

Grant is survived by his wife, Julia Hinman of Mount Upton; his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Lavonne Hinman of Mount Upton; five daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and William Joslyn Jr. of Mount Upton, Becky Hinman of Mount Upton, Marie Bryden of Sidney, Charlotte and Chuck Frank of Mount Upton and Kimberly and Dave Hawkins of Mount Upton; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and many friends.

He is also predeceased by a sister, Marjorie Babcock.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at 3 p.m. in Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton. Pastor Mary Ann Linder of the United Methodist Church, Mount Upton, will officiate.

Immediately following the service there will be a gathering for fellowship at the Mount Upton Park.

Friends may call Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Mount Upton.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Betty L. Preston
HARTWICK — Betty L. Preston, 55, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, after a short illness.

Arrangements are pending with the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Jean E. Cooper
WATERVILLE — Jean E. Cooper, 79, of Madison Street, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

She was born Sept. 20, 1919, in Milford, the daughter of the late Stanley K. and Frances Saxton Martin and was educated in Milford schools.

On Feb. 10, 1942, in Milford, she married Forrest Cooper, Jr.

The Cooper's have resided in Waterville since 1952. At one time, Mrs. Cooper was employed part-time with McLaughlin's Department Store in Waterville.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Milford.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Jean is survived by her husband, Forrest; one daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Robert Diana of Waterville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Deborah Cooper of Lapeer, Mich., and Kipp and Jane Cooper of Norwich; one sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Ward Green of Schenevus; one brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Ruth Martin of Milford; a brother-in-law and his wife, James and Betsey Cooper of Candor; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Lois Jewell; and a grandson.

The funeral will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main. St., Waterville, with the Rev. Judith Vogel officiating. Calling hours are Saturday, from 2 to 4 p.m., before the funeral.

Suzanne J. Carlos
PARIS, France — Suzanne J. Carlos died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, in Paris after a long illness.

She was born in San Francisco,  Calif. She graduated from San Francisco State College (B.A.), and the State University at Albany (M.A.). She also attended the Sorbonne, where her doctoral dissertation "L'art pictural dans I'oeuvre de Rene Char" had just been accepted. She taught at schools in the Albany area, at the University of Massachusetts, and at Hartwick College. She also worked at UNESCO in Paris, the Hartwick College Library, and at several language schools.

Suzanne is survived by her daughter, Claudia of Urbana, Ill.; her brother, Franklin Benjamin of San Francisco,  Calif.; and Alberto and Nevia Carlos of Clifton Park, N.Y.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Aug. 9, 1999, at St. Leon (Paris) and interment was at the Montparnasse Cemetery.

Betty L. Preston
HARTWICK — Betty L. Preston, 55, of Hartwick, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

She was born May 28, 1944 in Schenevus, the daughter of Howard and Thelma (Bivins) Sellick.
She was married to Ivan Preston.

Betty was a lifelong area resident.

She worked at the Great American in Cooperstown as an office clerk for more than 20 years. She also worked during the summer at Pop's Place in Milford.

Betty enjoyed NASCAR racing and loved being with her granddaughters and family. She will be dearly missed by many.

She is survived by her husband, Ivan Preston of Hartwick; daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and John Staats of Maryland and Lori and Brian Hoag of Roseboom; granddaughters, Brittany and Emily Hoag of Roseboom; sisters, Lula "Doody" and her husband, Glenn Hawley, of Maryland and Phyllis Tylee of Canajoharie; her twin brother, Robert, and his wife, Helene Sellick, of Hartwick; a brother, Donald Sellick of Hartwick; a dear niece, Heather Slater of Cherry Valley; Grandma Weber of Hartwick; and many beloved family and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, David Sellick in 1983.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

The Rev. Frank MacCracken Jr., pastor of the Word of Faith Church in Maryland, will officiate.

Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held at the Heller Funeral Home, Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The family will be in attendance 7-9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Betty to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905-4704.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Jane C. Luchessi
MILFORD — Jane Charlotte Luchessi, 71, of Milford, died Thursday evening, Sept. 3, 1999, at her residence.

She was born May 13, 1928, in Oneonta, the daughter of George L. and Rita (Galer) Couse. She was married to Vincent Luchessi who died in 1987.

Jane graduated from the Laurens Central School in 1940, where she lived for many years. After moving back to the area from the state of  Washington, she owned and operated the Milford Bowling Alley for 10 years. She was an avid bowler and bowled on several leagues including the Traveling League. she was also a member of the Bowlers Hall of Fame.

For several years, Jane was a chef at Ethan Allen and a supervisor at the Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Conn., where she lived for 11 years before returning to the Milford area where she lived out the remainder of her life.

Jane is survived by her children and their spouses, Richard and Gail Rutan of Atwater,  Calif., Debra and Keith Velasco of Milford, Leslie and Scott Yenser of Milford and Lizabeth and Heinz Rumenapp of Franklin and a brother and his wife, George and Carol Couse of West Oneonta.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Charlotte and Chris Chase, Kristen Velasco, Bill and Noreen Hogan, Rob and Karen Hogan, David and Lance Rutan, Christal and Jessica Cornwell, Jacqueline and Ted Lindo and Karen Rutan; her great-grandchildren, Devin and Dillon Chase, Briahna and Cera Cornwell, Sadie Hogan, Jake and Cassie Jane Lindo, Bethany and Desiree Rutan, Kate-Lynn Rutan; her faithful companion, Whiskers; along with an aunt and uncle, several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Gail Thayer.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at 3 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. John D. Greiner, pastor of the Oneonta Assembly of God, officiating.

Friends are invited to call Saturday evening at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Milford Emergency Squad or the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Christine Markert
DAVENPORT CENTER — Memorial services for Mr. Harold Markert and his wife, Mrs. Christine L. Markert, will be held Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, following regular services, which begin at 10:45 a.m., at the Davenport United Methodist Church with Rev. Judith Humphries-Fox officiating.

Burial will follow at the Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport.

Raymond Snyder
WALTON — Raymond Snyder died at age 84 of complications of ALS ("Lou Gehrig's Disease") on Aug. 25, 1999. He was born in Mansfield, Pa., on Dec. 23, 1914.

A 1934 graduate of Delaware Academy in Delhi, he worked at milk processing receiving facilities in Delhi and New Kingston. He volunteered in the Andes Fire Department for a time.

After several years in Owego, he returned to Delhi to become manager of the Delhi Waste Water Treatment Facility. While a Delhi resident, he was a founding member of the Campanile Handbell Choir of the First Presbyterian Church.

Later, he moved to Walton to manage the newly opened Walton Waste Water Treatment Plant. He later spent his career there working with the facility contractor engineers to overcome problems in the plant design, which was at the time considered to be new and revolutionary. He retired from that position at age 70, at which time he was awarded a certificate of recognition from the New York Water Pollution Control Association for "outstanding contributions made for the enhancement of water pollution control."

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Walton.

An avid bicyclist, Mr. Snyder participated in bicycle tours of Jamaica and Ireland, both after age 70. Walton residents will remember him riding on the many hillside roads surrounding the village, where he took great joy in the beautiful views.

Mr. Snyder was preceded in death by his wife Helen (nee Parsons) in 1994.

He is survived by his daughter, Raye Potts of Newburyport, Mass.; a son, Navy Captain (Doctor) Thomas Snyder of Vallejo,  Calif.; and grandsons, Ian Potts of Newburyport, James Snyder of  Washington, D.C., and Jason Snyder of Tampa, Fla.

His family plan a private funeral.

Donations in Mr. Snyder's memory can be made to Catskill Area Hospice Inc., the United Presbyterian Church of Walton or the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Cappy Wadsworth
SIDNEY — R.V. Cappy Wadsworth, 85, of Sidney and Stuart, Fla., passed away Monday, Aug. 30, in Stuart, Fla.

He was born to the late Claude B. and Lina Gregory Wadsworth on Feb. 14, 1914, in Mount Upton.

Cappy graduated from Albany Business School. He married Jane Herrick who predeceased him. Cappy then married Irma Valla.

He was the owner of Wadsworth Electric, Sidney, and was an area businessman for more than 50 years. He was a 50-year member of the United Methodist Church, Sidney. Cappy was past president and director of Sidney Rotary Club where he had 55 years of perfect attendance.

He was the director of the Sidney Development Corp. Cappy was also the past president and Director of the Sidney Chamber of Commerce and former director of The Hospital, Sidney. He was the director for the First National Bank of Sidney and was a member of the advisory board for the Sidney Branch of NBT. Cappy was also a member of the Sidney golf and country club and a charter member of the Sidney Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Irma Wadsworth of Stuart, Fla.; his son, Gregory Wadsworth of Hawaii; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Robert Slawson of Saratoga Springs; a sister, Kay W. Cooley of Sidney and Ellenton, Fla.; a brother, Claude V. Wadsworth of Fishers Landing and Ellenton, Fla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He is also predeceased by a sister, Eleanor W. Dobson.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the United Methodist Church, Sidney, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Masland officiating.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Naoma R. Johnson
ONEONTA — Naoma R.  Johnson of Oneonta departed this life on Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at her home.

She was born in Elmira on Feb. 22, 1922, to Naomi and Charles Rutty.

She married Embree W.  Johnson Jr. on April 6, 1944.

Naoma graduated from Syracuse University in 1944, with a degree in music education. She taught elementary and vocal music at Andrew S. Draper School in Schenevus from 1946 to 1953. As a result of her husband's job with the State Department, she embarked on a 17-year adventure of living overseas, where she raised her four children. The family lived in Ethiopia, Turkey, India and Thailand and traveled extensively through Europe and the Middle East.

Naoma enjoyed studying the languages and customs of the host countries and was active in various choirs. She was an avid bridge player and instructor.

In 1970, the family returned to Otsego County, settling in Milford. Naoma and Embree moved to Georgia in 1983, where they lived until Embree's death in 1987, at which time Naoma returned to the local area.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Cynthia Hester of Little Rock, Ark., Pamela and Daniel Wightman of Maryland, E. Reid and Colleen  Johnson of Corvallis, Ore., and Rebecca and Terry Mattison of Oneonta.

Naoma will also be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Kimberly and John-Embree Hester, Natalie and Naomi Wightman, Ethan Ward Johnson, and Shawn and Emily Mattison. Also surviving are her sister and brother, Charlotte Dame of Ashville, N.C., and Charles W. Rutty of West Palm Beach, Fla.

Calling hours will be at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, when the family will be in attendance. Burial will be in Halcott Center, with the Rev. Nancy Kozlowski, pastor of the Milford United Methodist Church, officiating at the funeral, which will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Otsego Unit, P.O. Box 1480, Syracuse, N.Y. 13201-1480 or to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are with Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
