Kathleen M. Barber
MARGARETVILLE — Kathleen M. Barber, 85, of Margaretville, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

She was born April 22, 1914, in East Durham, the daughter of William Bertram Chandler and Ellen Mae McKenzie.

She married Frankie C. Barber on Nov. 28, 1931, in Margaretville. He died Oct. 21, 1981.

She worked as a clerk in Bussy's General Store and Margaretville Department Store. She was a mail carrier on the route from Margaretville to New Kingston. She was also a telephone operator for the Margaretville Telephone Co.

She was a longtime area resident. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Kathleen is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Shirley) Greene of Denver and Mrs. Gilbert (Ruth) Storey of Margaretville; five grandchildren, Paul and David Storey, and Susan, Scott and Steven Greene; six great-grandchildren, Kimberly and William Finch, Brian and Molly Greene, and Danyelle and Marissa Greene; one brother, Stanley Chandler of Kingston; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. George Carpenter, officiating. Burial will be in the Sanford Cemetery, Margaretville.

Calling hours will be Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Dulce Maria Coiro
ONEONTA — Dulce Maria Coiro, baby daughter of Edward and Marie (Pena) Coiro, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at A.0. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She is survived by her parents, Edward and Marie Coiro of Oneonta; her paternal grandmother, Mary Coiro of Oneonta; and maternal grandmother, Maria Estair Pena of Tonala, Mexico; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at the Community Gospel Church, 12 Grove St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Donald Yarborough, pastor of the church, officiating.

Burial will be Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Community Gospel Church (Mexican Missions).

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Edgar W. Shirey
MERIDALE — A memorial service will be held at the cemetery in Meridale, to inter the remains of Edgar W. Shirey on Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at 1 p.m. A gathering for those attending will follow at the Meridale Community Church.

Edgar W. Shirey passed away on June 5, 1999, in Lascassas, Tenn. He came to Meridale, from Vermont, as a young man. He lived in Meridale until about five years ago when he and his wife relocated to Tennessee to be near family.

Mr. Shirey is survived by his wife, Erma; three sons; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Aileen E. Moore
WORCESTER — Aileen E. Jenkins Moore, 84, of Worcester and of Spring Hill, Fla., died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, in Spring Hill, Fla., where she has lived part-time for the past five years.

She was born June 26, 1915, in Albany, the daughter of William and Helen (Wall) Coffey

She married George L. Jenkins on Oct. 3, 1933, in Albany. Aileen and George owned Gee Jays Hardware Store in Schenevus for 12 years, while living on Smith Road in Worcester. He predeceased her on Feb. 18, 1972.

She then married Charles W. Moore on July 25, 1981, and moved to Davenport. He predeceased her on July 9, 1988.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Worcester.

Aileen lived for her children and grandchildren, they meant everything to her. She will be dearly remember and missed by many.

Aileen is survived by two sons, Richard Coffey of Port St. Lucy, Fla., and George Jr. and his wife, Brenda Jenkins, of Newport Richie, Fla.; daughter, Aileen, and her husband, Heinz Modinger, of Spring Hill, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, Richard, Allen, Michael and Steven Coffey, Robert Glendenning, Susan Parker, Michelle Jenkins, Jennifer Johnson, George Jenkins III, Amber and Stacey Reich; five great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Robert Jr. Glendenning, Danielle Parker, Rayne Jenkins and Colin Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her two brothers, John Coffey in February 1985 and William Coffey in May 1998.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding as the celebrant.

Burial will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery in Albany.

Calling hours will be on Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. There will be a recitation of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a Vigil service at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Aileen, to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, N.Y. 12197 or Catskill Area Hospice, Inc. & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

James W. Morgan
NEW HARTFORD — Hon. James W. (Jim) Morgan, 58, of New Hartford, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at his home.

He was born on Oct. 12, 1940, in Oneonta, the son of Stanley G. and Mary Bradbury Morgan.

He graduated from Oneonta High School, the State University at Albany and Albany Law School in 1967.

In 1963, he married Marilyn Houghton in Oneonta.

Mr. Morgan practiced law with Kernan & Kernan and Balzano & Morgan. He then served as Oneida County Family Court Judge from 1991 until the present, and at different times presided as an Acting State Supreme Court Judge. Before being elected Family Court Judge he also served as New Hartford Town Court Judge.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church. He was also a member of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and the Oneida County Bar Association.

Jim was a well-known area runner having run in the first 21 of the 22 Boilermaker Road Races. He was an avid gardener and downhill skier and also enjoyed the family camp on the St. Lawrence River for many years.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill Morgan and Anne Fernald of Lafayette, Ind., and Bob and Laurie Morgan of S. Burlington, Vt. He also leaves a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and David Hillson of Stamford; his mother-in-law, Jane Houghton of Cape Vincent; two nephews, several cousins; and dear friend, John Balzano.

The funeral will be Saturday at noon at St. John the Evangelist Church, New Hartford. Interment will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park. Calling hours will be Friday, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Friedel, Williams, Coriale & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford,

Friends may consider the American Cancer Society in his memory.

Leon A. Wayand
WEST ONEONTA — Leon A. Wayand, 88, of West Oneonta and formerly of Morris, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Feb. 27, 1911, in the town of Potter, the son of Andrew Benjamin and Laura (Seidel) Wayand.

He graduated from the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Morrisville, Class of 1937.

He married Harriett Tyler on Oct. 2, 1937, in Morris. She died in 1987, soon after they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

He was employed for 29 years at the Morris Manor Farms, retiring in 1988. He was a past master of the Louisville Grange, a 4-H leader, a member of the Otsego County Fair Board, Butternuts Valley Senior Citizens Club and the West Oneonta Senior Citizens Club.

Leon is survived by two daughters, Katherine O'Connor and her husband, Robert, of Fayetteville and Janice Paquin and her husband, Henry, of Troy; one son, Andrew Wayand and his wife, Irene, of West Oneonta; four grandchildren, Paul O'Connor of Chittenango, Jacalyn O'Connor of Guilderland, Sherri Paquin of Troy and Andrew of West Oneonta; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Joseph Fiske officiating. Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris. Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. on Saturday until service time at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Morris Emergency Squad or the SUNY Morrisville Alumni Association.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Norma M. Parker
BURLINGTON FLATS — Norma M. Parker, 102, formerly of Burlington Flats, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin, where she had been a resident since 1994.

She was born Nov. 15, 1896, in the town of Exeter, the daughter of Burton and Medora (Johnson) Hinds.

She was married to Albert Harris Parker on Oct. 18, 1919. He died Nov. 14, 1971.

She was a lifelong area resident and was very proud of the fact that she was the oldest living member of the Burlington Flats First Baptist Church.

Norma is survived by her companion, Irene Welch of New Hartford; a special friend, Virgil Zinninger of West Burlington; and cousins residing in Clinton.

She was predeceased by a brother, Ward Hinds.

Funeral and committal services will be held Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Burlington Flats, with the Rev. Jay Henderson officiating. Interment will follow in the Burlington Flats Cemetery.

It was Mrs. Parker's request that no calling hours be held.

Those who wish may donate to the First Baptist Church of Burlington Flats or the Chase Memorial Nursing Home of New Berlin, in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Frances B. O'Brien
BINGHAMTON — Frances Bell O'Brien, 87, a resident of Elizabeth Church Manor in Binghamton, and formerly of Meridale, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999.

She was predeceased by her husband, H. Paul O'Brien; her brothers, Charles L.  Jones and Ralph S. Jones; and a sister, Helen Cocco.

She is survived by three sisters, Alice V. Ganim of Binghamton, Gladys Grecco of Meridale and Dorothy Feagle of Lake City, Fla.; a brother, James  Jones of Binghamton; her niece and goddaughter, Barbara Ganim of North Kingstown, R.I.; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home Inc., 71 Main St., Binghamton, at at 10:15 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Vestal, where a funeral Mass will be offered. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Meridale.

William M. Gray
OTEGO — William M. Gray, 77, of Gardenview Manor, Otego, and formerly of Walton, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at A.0. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born on Nov. 26, 1921, in Walton, to William and Margaret (Knowles) Gray. He was born and raised in Walton.

He is survived by a daughter, Linda Gray-Thompson of Oneonta; a son, Michael W. Gray of Walton; three grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Mitchell Elmore of Walton; a brother and sister-in-law, Leroy "Bucky" and Dolores Gray of Walton; and several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held in Walton Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc., Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton.

Randall O. Bennett
WEST BURLINGTON — Randall O. Bennett, 81, of West Burlington died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.

He was born July 6, 1918, in Edmeston, the son of Ford E. and Carrie A. (Simmons) Bennett.

He was married to Wilma A. Rose on Feb. 13, 1937, at the Methodist Parsonage by the Rev. Harold McKenzie.

Randall retired from the Otsego County Highway Department. He previously owned and operated his family's dairy farm. He was a member of the Farmers Lodge No. 553, F and AM and an honorary past member of the Edmeston Fire Department. Randall loved sports, horseshoe pitching and was an enthusiastic hunter.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wilma; his children and their spouses, Ronald and Jill Bennett, Gordon and Frances Bennett, Dale and Sandra Bennett, Donna and Robert Sweet, Darleen and William Squires, Judith and Roger Slentz and Paula and Gary Schoonover; 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Donald Ramsey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Randall was predeceased by one son, Rodney James Bennett, and his sister Thelma Weissflog.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Edmeston, with the Rev. William Highfield officiating.

Interment will follow at Burlington Flats Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday, Sept. 12, from 6-9 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 8 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Randall's memory to Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

John Winfield Decker
PORTLAND, Ore. — John Winfield Decker of Portland, Ore., died Sept. 9, 1999, of congestive heart failure.

He was born Oct. 13, 1911, in Stamford, the son of Winfield and Eva Starley Decker.

He married Irene A. Fox on Oct. 11, 1936, in South Kortright.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; six children, James Winfield Decker of Tulatin, Ore., Jean A. Heflin of Lothian, Md., Barbara I. Gray of Portland, Ore., Susan L. Cyders of Salem, Ore., Doreen M. Watson of Gladstone, Ore., and Theresa K. Decker of Portland, Ore.; and two sisters, Margaret Kimbell of Middleburg and Mary Curtin of Brooklyn.

He was predeceased by six brothers, Grant, Chauncey, George, Pete, Harry and Scott Decker; and two sisters, Arabelle Neisz and Annie Marschilok.

He is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at a later date at the Grant Cemetery, Hobart. Remembrances may be sent to St. Vincent Hospice, Portland, Ore.

Donald R. Peterson
SIDNEY — Donald R. Peterson, 82, of 27 Overlook Drive, Sidney, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday evening, Sept. 8, 1999, at his residence.

Donald was born March 1, 1917, in New Berlin. He was the son of the late Martin and Jessie Randolph Peterson.

He was married to Betty Lawrence, who predeceased him Sept. 8, 1982.

Mr. Peterson was a retired machinist for the Bendix Corporation, Sidney. He was a member of the Vets Club at the Sidney American Legion and the Dads of the VFW. Donald was also a member of the IAM and AW Local 1529, Sidney. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 277, Sidney.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The Rev. Harold Lefler will officiate.

Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. Tuesday until service time at 11 a.m. at the funeral chapel. Memorial gifts may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, if desired.

James L. Simmons
HOBART — James L. Simmons, 72, died Sept. 9, 1999, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born April 26, 1927, in South Kortright, the son of Lloyd and Martha (Whitney) Simmons.

He married Ruth Preston on Feb. 4, 1948, and was a lifelong area resident. Ruth survives as do four daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Giles Ebert of Callicoon, Elaine and Allan Swantak of South Kortright, Karen and Enos (Bucky) VanAmburgh of Montgomery, and Catherine and Lt. Col. Michael Gathright stationed at Barksdale AFB,  Louisiana; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marguerite and Ed Hughes and Viola Lane of Florida; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Two sisters predeceased him.

Mr. Simmons served in the Armed Forces from Oct. 5, 1946, through March 26, 1948, assigned to the 458th Amphibious Truck Company, Ft. Eustis, Va. He was employed at South Kortright Central School as a bus driver in May 1948.

In 1955, he started working on the Walter Rich Poultry Farm, and he worked there until 1965. He then went to work at South Kortright Central School as a mechanic and janitor, advancing to head custodian. He retired in the late 1980s but continued to drive buses until 1998. Jim was an active Hobart Fire Department member.

Calling hours will take place on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, from 7-9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Funeral services will be at the Hobart Fire Department, Cornell Avenue, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Richard Elder officiating. The family requests a private burial service at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hobart Fire Department or the Hobart Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Marilyn Rockefeller
BLOOMVILLE — Marilyn J. Rockefeller, 69, of Bloomville died Saturday evening, Sept. 11, 1999, at Delhi Community Hospital following an extended illness.

She was born June 4, 1930, in Oneonta, daughter of Pauline and Floyd Baker, she graduated from Oneonta High School in 1947, and married Guy C. Rockefeller of Bloomville on Dec. 17, 1949.

Marilyn is survived by Guy, her husband of 50 years; four children and their spouses, John and Beverly Rockefeller, Gary and JoAnn Rockefeller, Carol and Don Pickett of Bloomville and Dennis and Barb Rockefeller of Delhi; eight grandchildren, Kimberly and Kyle Rockefeller, Garrett Rockefeller, Carson, Chad and Nathan Rockefeller, Leah and Brittany Pickett; three siblings and their spouses, Don and Nancy Baker of Carlisle, Pa., Bev and Gordon Daley of Oneonta, and Marge and Harv Huntley of Piseco Lake; also several nieces and nephews.

Always an active member of the community, Marilyn volunteered her time serving in various benevolent committees including Catskill Rail Committee, Bloomville Pride, the Historical Association and the Catskill Area Revitalization Committee.

As a lifelong member of the Methodist Church her greatest gift to the church was her music. She was the organist for the Bloomville United Methodist Church for the better part of 50 years.

As a public servant Marilyn served as tax collector, town clerk and supervisor for the town of Kortright from 1960 to 1985. After a short time at home, she spent the next seven years with the Delaware County Highway Department.

Marilyn's life was her family and her church. Her children and her grandchildren are her greatest legacy. Mom was loved by her family and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Bloomville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Clinton Lunt officiating, followed by burial at Riverside Cemetery in Bloomville. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Marilyn's honor to the United Methodist Church of Bloomville.
