Paula E. Certain
PINE HILL — Paula E. Certain, 78, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the North Shore Hospital, Manhasset.

She was born April 7, 1921, in Philadelphia, the daughter of Milton I. Stevens and Alice Moses.

She married Wilhelm Certain.

She was a school bus driver in Wyandanch, Long Island, and then after moving to this area worked at Kirkside Adult Home, Roxbury.

Paula is survived by her husband, Wilhelm `Bill ` Certain of Pine Hill; three sons, William Certain, Gary Tullis and Donald Tullis; one daughter, Bernice Fleming; and one granddaughter, Amber.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Committal services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Family members will receive friends prior to the service Tuesday morning.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Esther Close Davis
MARGARETVILLE — Esther Close Davis, 83, of Margaretville died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

She was born March 14, 1916, in Cross Mt. in Arena, the daughter of William Close and Ella Ackerley.

She married Howard R. Davis on April 15, 1934, in Arena. He died Dec. 17, 1978.

They etsablished the Davis Creamery (now  White's Dairy) and later took over the Davis family farm on East Main Street, Margaretville, where she lived the rest of her life.

She was a dedicated nurse's aide at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, from 1960-1976.

She was a lifelong area resident. She attended elementary school in the Millbrook and the Margaretville school, commuting on the Red Heifer Train.

She was a member of the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville, a volunteer for the Margaretville Red Cross programs and was active in trying to start a community swimming project. She also was active with the Margaretville Library.

Esther is survived by one son, Lauren R. Davis of Margaretville; one daughter, Mrs. David (Sandra) R. Morrison of Richmond, Va.; three grandsons, four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Sarah Brown of Downsville, Ruth Fairbairn, Florence Burgin and Berna Van Benschoten, all of Margaretville; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the Old Margaretville Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made in memory of Esther Davis to the Memorial Fund of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital or the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Thomas W. Dorsett
MARGARETVILLE — Thomas W. Dorsett, 82, of Margaretville died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at his home.

He was born March 1, 1917, in the Bronx, the son of Timothy Dorsett and Gertrude Connaughton.

He married Stella Balses on Nov. 3, 1946, in Yorkville.

He was in the Army World War II. He worked for the Postal Service as a supervisor for Short Pay, he retired on July 1, 1978, from GPO in the Bronx.

He was a member of the American Post 216, Margaretville, the V.F.W. Post, Kingston, the Sacred Heart Parish, Margaretville, the Postal Service Holy Name Society as Vice President in the Bronx and Manhattan. He served as secretary and treasurer for the Arena Fire Department, Commissioner of the Arena Fire Department.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Stella Dorsett; two daughters, Arlene Dorsett Vining and Stella Corigliano; also several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell officiating. Burial will be in the Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Calling hours will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made in memory of Tom Dorsett to the Arena Fire Department or the American Post 216, Margaretville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

John H. Hall Jr.
MORRIS — John Hudson Hall Jr., 73, a resident of Greenwich, Conn., and Morris died at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown on Friday, Sept., 10, 1999, due to complications after an operation.

Mr. Hall was the son of the late Katherine and John H. Hall of Hartsdale, and the grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. Lewis R. Morris of New York City and Manor House Farms in Morris. He was the direct descendant of Lewis R. Morris, a New York signer of the Declaration of Independence, and General Jacob Morris, one of the earliest settlers of the Butternut Valley immediately following the American Revolution. He was also the great-grandson of William Andrews Clark, who was the first senator from Montana, and a noted art collector.

Mr. Hall was born in New York City and raised in Hartsdale. For several years he attended the Thomas School and Arizona Desert School in Tucson, Ariz., and then to Middlesex School in Concord, Mass. He received a bachelor's degree from Williams College and a master's degree in geology from Queens College, Ontario.

As a young man, he worked for Kennecott Copper Corp. as an exploration geologist. Later he worked as a portfolio manager for Carl M. Loeb Rhoades & Co. in New York City.

He served as chairman of The Philatelic Foundation in New York and was a member of the Board of Trustees of The Corcoran Gallery of Art in  Washington, D.C.

John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Erika P. Hall; and their two children, John R. Hall III of California and Carla Hall Friedman of New York City; as well as four grandchildren; and a brother, Lewis R.M. Hall of New York City and Morris.

A funeral service will take place in All Saints Chapel between Morris and Gilbertsville, on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Critical Care Unit of Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, Glimmerglass Opera, Cooperstown or Zion Church, Morris.

Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Aileen E. Moore
WORCESTER — Aileen E. Jenkins Moore, 84, of Worcester and of Spring Hill, Fla., died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, in Spring Hill, Fla., where she has lived part time for the past five years.

She was born June 26, 1915, in Albany, the daughter of William and Helen (Wall) Coffey.

She married George L. Jenkins on Oct. 3, 1933, in Albany. Aileen and George owned Gee Jays Hardware Store in Schenevus for 12 years, while living on Smith Road in Worcester. He predeceased her on Feb. 18, 1972.

She then married Charles W. Moore on July 25, 1981, and moved to Davenport. He predeceased her on July 9, 1988.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Worcester.

Aileen lived for her children and grandchildren; they meant everything to her. She will be dearly remembered and missed by many.

Aileen is survived by two sons, Richard Coffey of Port St. Lucy, Fla., and George Jr. and his wife, Brenda Jenkins, of Newport Richie, Fla.; daughter, Aileen, and her husband, Heinz Modinger, of Spring Hill, Fla.; grandchildren, Richard, Allen, Michael and Steven Coffey, Robert Glendenning, Susan Parker, Michelle Jenkins, Jennifer Johnson, George Jenkins III, Amber and Stacey Reich, Dennis, Chris and Eric Modinger; great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Robert Jr. Glendenning, Danielle Parker, Rayne Jenkins and Colin Johnson, Marybeth Modinger; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her two brothers, John Coffey in February 1985 and William Coffey in May 1998.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding as the celebrant.

Burial will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery in Albany.

Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. There will be a recitation of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a Vigil service at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Aileen, to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, N.Y. 12197 or Catskill Area Hospice, Inc. & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Raymond Munyan
OXFORD — Raymond A. Munyan, 64 of the New York State Veterans' Home, Oxford and formerly of Guilford died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at the Veterans' Home.

He was born on March 22, 1935, in Oxford, the son of Kenneth and Julia (Patterson) Munyan.

Raymond is survived by his mother, Julia Munyan of Norwich; his sons and daughter-in-law, Ken and Deborah Munyan of Guilford and John Munyan of Tacoma, Wash.; his daughters and son-in-law, Rae Ann and Larry Clark of Oneonta, Linda Mason of Las Vegas and Ruth Munyan of Tacoma, Wash.; his sister and brother-in-law, Claudia and Tim  Johnson of Plymouth. Several grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

Ray was a graduate of Oxford Academy and Central School. He entered the United States Air Force and retired in 1974, with the rank of Technical Sergeant. He then was employed as a machinist at Amphenol in Sidney, where he was a member of the IAMAW union.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed bowling and traveling. He was a member of Fort Hill Post 376 American Legion.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at 2 p.m., from the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford, with the Rev. Kenneth Barnes, pastor of the Oxford United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.

Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford from 7 to 9 tonight.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Israel Shedrowitz
LAKELAND, Fla. — Mr. Israel Shedrowitz, 84, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Fla.

He was born Sept. 1, 1915, in the Bronx.

He moved to Lakeland, Fla. in 1977, from Delhi. He was a retired construction superintendent with the J. Arborio Contractors in Poughkeepsie for 33 years. He was of the Jewish faith.

He was predeceased by his wife, Nell Shedrowitz.

Israel is survived by his daughter, Sheila Duncan of Lakeland, Fla.; sisters, Miriam Shedrowitz of Long Beach. and Diana DeQuollo of Scotch Plains, N.J.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3236, Lakeland, Fla. 33802.

James L. Simmons
HOBART — James L. Simmons, 72, died Sept. 9, 1999 at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born April 26, 1927 in South Kortright, the son of Lloyd and Martha (Whitney) Simmons.

He married Ruth Preston on Feb. 4, 1948 and was a lifelong area resident. Ruth survives as do four daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Giles Ebert of Callicoon, Elaine and Allan Swantak of South Kortright, Karen and Enos (Bucky) VanAmburgh of Montgomery and Catherine and Lt. Col. Michael Gathright stationed at Barksdale, AFB,  Louisiana; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marguerite and Ed Hughes of Hobart and Viola Lane of Florida and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Two sisters predeceased him.

Mr. Simmons served in the Armed Forces from Oct. 5, 1946 through March 26, 1948, assigned to the 458th Amphibious Truck Company, Ft. Eustis, Va. He was employed at South Kortright Central School as a bus driver in May 1948..

In 1955, he worked on the Walter Rich Poultry Farm until 1965 and then went to work at South Kortright Central School as a mechanic and janitor advancing to head custodian. He retired in the late 1980s but continued to drive a bus until 1998. Jim was an active Hobart Fire Department member.

Calling hours took place on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Funeral services will be today at the Hobart Fire Department, Cornell Avenue at 2 p.m. with Pastor Richard Elder officiating. The family requests a private burial service at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hobart Fire Department or the Hobart Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Rodger 'Pete' Smith
ONEONTA — Rodger Paul `Pete` Smith, 79, of Oneonta, beloved husband, father and friend, passed on Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at his daughter and son-in-law's home in Oneonta. Pete had bravely battled cancer and ALS with great strength and nobility for many years.

He was born Nov. 14, 1919, in Albany, to Edward and Emma ( Schmidt) Smith.

Pete spent his formative years in the Albany area prior to moving to Oneonta in 1948.

He married Barbara Elizabeth Boardman on Sept. 15, 1946, at St. Paul's Church in Albany.

Pete served in the United States Army during World War II, and was stationed on Morotai Island in the Asian-Pacific theater of operation. It was during that time that he gained what would become a lifelong interest in aircraft. Following the war, Pete worked for General Electric in Albany, Royal Amusements in Oneonta, and retired from the State University College at Oneonta as supervisor of the heating plant. Following his retirement, he enjoyed participating in events with the Sports Car Club of Oneonta, worked on the pit crew of his son's racing team, and was very active with the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum in Reading, Pa.

Pete will be remembered by all who knew him for his fascination with all things mechanical. He was the man they turned to for help with their broken automobiles and lawn mowers. He would study the problem with the eye of an engineer and make the repair with the skill and determination of an artisan. Over the years he served as a mentor to many, passing on his expertise and meticulous, patient approach.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara; two children and their spouses, whom he also loved dearly, Peter and Diane Smith of Saratoga Springs and Susan and William Clemons of Oneonta; and four grandchildren, Shelby Smith of Saratoga Springs and Sarah, Ian and Meredith Clemons of Oneonta. He is also survived by his sister, Sally Failey of Brewerton; his brother, Donald Smith of Voorheesville; and a special sister-in-law and her husband, Ruth and Thomas Delaney of Clifton Park; and their son Tommy.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family at St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Canon Mark Cole, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or St. James Episcopal Church.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Howard Ainslie
HARTWICK — Howard Curry Ainslie, of North Street, Hartwick, who was known to the world for his unsinkable sense of humor and to his daughters for the limitless sacrifices he made for them, died on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at his home.

Even though he was 79 years old at the time of his death, he associated with the young, and had remained young his entire life. His daughters especially remember how he worked to hold the family together when their mother, his wife of 15 years, died unexpectedly at the age of 34. He was left with six daughters, ages 1 week to 14 years.

He was born Jan. 7, 1920, Howard was the only child of Ralph and Abbey (Curry) Ainslie.

He was a lifelong resident of the town of Hartwick and attended schools there. He had fond memories of playing in the town band and on the town's basketball team. Always public-service minded, he served as an assessor for the town of Hartwick and for many years was a member of the Fire Department. He was especially proud of his years as a 4-H'er, showing his Grand Champion Jerseys at the State Fair. He also served as the head 4-H leader for the Hartwick 4-H Dairy Club.

Howard first worked for his father and uncle, logging with horses and working in their Hartwick saw mill.

After his marriage on June 24, 1944, to Jennie Irene Hitchcock, he earned his living for many years as a self-employed truck driver, hauling eggs and fresh produce to Canajoharie, Buffalo and New York City. For nearly 15 years he had two simultaneous milk routes, hauling cans from farmers to milk plants in Cooperstown and Fly Creek. Also, from 1956 until his retirement, he owned and operated a dairy farm on Wiley Town Road, north of Hartwick in the Otsego Township. During his 15-year employment as parts man at Wright's Farm Supply in Hartwick, he had an excellent opportunity to showcase his sense of humor and show his willingness to help others. He often held more than one job at a time, leaving the legacy of a strong work ethic to his children and grandchildren.

Howard is survived by his six daughters and their spouses, Donna Neylon and Thomas Cooper of Charlton, Mass., Sondra and John Croft and Darcy and Bret Schilling, all of Hartwick, Edith and Ronald Jennings of Cooperstown, Pati Sloan of Gilbertsville and Carla and Harold Couse of Milford; his 17 grandchildren, James, Nancy and Abby Croft, and Debra (Croft) York, all of Hartwick, Norma (Neylon) Holmes of Barre, Mass., Matthew Neylon of Oakham, Mass., Teresa (Jennings) Russo of Gouvernor, Michael Jennings of Cooperstown, Jennifer (Velasco) Griffiths and Jessica and Samantha Couse, all of Milford, Aaron, Andrew and Adam Sloan, all of Gilbertsville and Daniel, Amber and Joshua Schilling, all of Hartwick; his 15 great-grandchildren, Michael, Rebecca, Kaylee and Cullan Croft and Devon and Drew York, all of Hartwick, Logan, Caitlin, Jordan and Peyton Griffiths of Milford, Jacylyn and Mikhaila Holmes of Barre, Mass., and Kimberly and Brennan Neylon and Sammi Jo McDonald, all of Oakham, Mass.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1960; his daughter, Teena Rae in 1956; and two sons-in-law, John D. Neylon Jr. in 1991 and Ronald E. Sloan in 1992.

Following cremation, a private burial service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in Hartwick Cemetery, North Street, Hartwick, with the Rev. Laverne Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, officiating. The urn for his ashes will be handmade by his grandson, Daniel Schilling. From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, Howard's family will hold a "celebration of his life" in the public room of the Christian Church, Main Street, Hartwick. All are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations in Howard's name be made to Otsego County 4-H, care of Jennifer Griffiths, 2092 Kelly Corners Road, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Martha Dickison
COOPERSTOWN — Martha Becker Dickison, 89, of Cooperstown, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Martha was born June 29, 1910, in Cooperstown, a daughter of John S. and Anna (Short) Becker.

Martha was a graduate of Cooperstown High School in the Class of 1929.

She married Leslie S. Dickison on May 15, 1932, in the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown.

Martha was a senior nurse's aid and ward clerk for 34 years at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital.

Martha was a life member of the Otsego-Hartwick Chapter 201 Order of the Eastern Star, serving as secretary for many years as well as serving as matron. Martha was a life member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, a member of the church choir and a member of the Fellowship Guild.

Martha is survived by her two daughters, Murriel Dickison of Rome and Elna Dickison of Cooperstown; a sister, Marion Becker Keyes of Cooperstown; and a daughter of love, Helen Phillips Hannah, and her husband, Edwin; four grandchildren, Leslie, Amy, Sarah and Jon; several great-grandchildren; two nieces, Patricia and her husband, John Fisher, and Sandra Tedesco; two nephews, Herbert O'Hara and William Dickison; many loving cousins and great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie; and her son, Richard.

A funeral service will be Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at 5:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown, with the Revs. Lyn and Stephen Quinlans, co-pastors of the First Presbyterian Church and the Very Rev. Douglas C. Smith of the Christ Episcopal Church, Cooperstown, officiating.

Calling hours will be Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, Box 322, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Harold Owens Jr.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Harold D. Owens Jr. "Perce," 77, a resident of Albuquerque, N.M., for 11 years, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999.

Harold is survived by his wife of 46 years, Evelyn Marie Bush; daughter, Terri Robin Owens Moorhead of Folsom, N.J.; sons, Craig Ralph Owens of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Alan Harold Owens of Stamford, Conn.; grandchildren, Shawn Ryan Moorhead, Aurora Mary Rose Owens and McKenna Elizabeth Owens.

Harold was born and raised in the Catskill Mountains in Delhi, N.Y.

He married Evelyn Marie Bush in 1953. Mr. Owens was a graduate of the Navy School of Music in  Washington, D.C., served six years in the United States Navy and was a World War II veteran on the USS Philadelphia. He participated in all European invasions except Normandy. Mr. Owens served seven years as under sheriff and 28 years as county clerk of Delaware County.

He was organist for many years at the Baptist and Christian Missionary Alliance Churches in Delhi, N.Y. Harold was a member of the Oneonta Musicians Union for many years, Delhi Firemen Association and band leader, member of the Albuquerque Jazz Society, piano player for the Palo Duro Orchestra. He was also a longtime member of the Christian Motorcycle Association and an avid biker. Harold was past president of the Delhi American Legion and of the New York State Association of County Clerks.

Services will be held Tuesday, noon, at Grace Church, 6901 San Antonio NE, in Albuquerque, N.M., with Pastor Edwin Shepperson officiating. Interment will take place at 2:30 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, N.M. Pallbearers will be Robert Moorhead, Shawn Ryan Moorhead, Chuck Tipton, Craig Owens, Neal Baker and Alan Owens.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Delaware National Bank in Mr. Owen's memory for a Music Scholarship Fund at Delaware Academy.
