Richard H. Riker
SIDNEY — Richard H. Riker, 88, a resident of the Gilmore Nursing Home, Norwich, and formerly of Ritton Street, Sidney, passed away Sunday evening, Sept. 12, 1999, at his residence in Norwich.

He was born March 15, 1911, in Utica. Richard was the son of the late Archer G. and Hazel Carroll Riker.

Mr. Riker was supervisor for E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney. He retired April 1973 after completing 29 years with the company.

Richard was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, Sidney Golf and Country Club, Sidney Lodge 2175 B.P.O.E.

For 20 years, Richard served as a trustee for the Sidney Public Library.

Richard is survived by a daughter, Susan Kilgore of Newton, Mass.; two sons, Peter Riker of Unadilla and David Riker of West Springfield, Mass.; six grandchildren, Susan Joslin and Amanda Kilgore of Newton, Mass., Benjamin and Nathan Riker of Unadilla, Jennifer Sinsebox of Rochester, and Kimberly Galinski of Westmoreland; also five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brother, Carroll A. Riker.

A prayer service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Joseph J. Schuck officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends may call at their convenience Wednesday at the funeral chapel. His family will be present from 1 p.m. till services at 2:30 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, or to the Sidney Public Library if desired.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Frederick Mann
LAKEWOOD,  Colo. — Frederick Gavitt Mann, 77, formerly of Sidney, N.Y., passed away Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at Villa Manor in Lakewood,  Colo., after a short illness.

He was born on Nov. 25, 1921, in  Jefferson, N.Y., the son of Ray and Marguerete Gavitt Mann.

He graduated from  Jefferson High School. He enlisted into the Army Air Force and served during World War II from 1942 to 1945, and was stationed in Iceland for nearly two years.

In 1945, he married Ida Fancher (currently Ida Schlisman). He moved to Sidney, N.Y., in 1946, where he owned and operated the Sidney TV/Radio Sales and Service business for 20 years.

Fred was a member of the Sidney Voluntary Fire Department, where he attained the rank of lieutenant. He left the Sidney area in 1967, where he owned and operated Broadway TV in Denver,  Colo., at two locations on South Broadway.

Frederick is survived by four sons, Robert and Linda of Cedar Key, Fla., William of Sidney, N.Y., Peter and June of Sidney, N.Y., and Paul and Peri of Gilbertsville, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

He was also a licensed pilot and loved to fly, enjoyed camping, fishing and his boxer dogs. He was one of co-founders of the Sidney "Fly-in-Breakfast" in the early 1960, which is still a very popular event at the Sidney Municipal Airport.

Private services will be held in Colorado, a memorial service in Sidney, N.Y., is tentatively scheduled for next spring, details will be published later. It is asked when you hear a plane pass overhead, give Fred one more thought.

Jane Y. Lawson
ONEONTA — Jane Y. Lawson, 79, of Oneonta, died of cancer at her home on Saturday evening, Sept. 11, 1999, and went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ.

She devoted her life to glorifying God by loving Him, and loving other people.

She leaves behind her adoring family; her husband, Dr. Kent D. Lawson; her three daughters, Leila Jane Jacobs and her husband, Roger, of Eugene, Ore., Nancy Lee Mangione and her husband, Peter, of McLean, Va., and Ardith Louise Huemmer of Oneonta (her husband Kenneth is deceased); eight grandchildren, including two who are residents of Oneonta, Kenny and Brett Huemmer; six great-grandchildren; and special friends, Linda and Jimmy Pearce of Goodyear Lake, Kathy, Neal, and Josh MacCreery of Oneonta, Donna Ladner of Sidney, Audrey Finley of Oneonta, and a host of others.

She was born in Sayre, Pa., on Aug. 16, 1920. While growing up in Owego, she used the name of her stepfather, and was known as Jane Hulbirt. In 1938, she was voted queen of Owego's Sesqui-Centennial.

She graduated from the State University College at Cortland in 1940. She first taught all eight grades in a one-room school in Nichols, and later taught in Vestal, Ithaca, and Wynantskill.

She and Kent were married in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Owego, on May 16, 1942, and resided in  Pennsylvania and upstate New York. From 1954 to 1965, she lived with her family in Bennington, Vt., where she was president of the League of Women Voters.

She pursued an interest in nutrition and health starting in 1956. Her columns and articles on the subject were published in local newspapers and national magazines. She lectured extensively at colleges, schools, churches, and fraternal organizations. She appeared on regional television talk shows, and in 1974, testified before the United States Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs. Her production of "Issues in Nutrition" was a regular radio broadcast in Oneonta in the 1970s. In 1976, she wrote a book, "Issues in Nutrition," based on the programs. In addition, Jane was the founder and president of the Oneonta Area Natural Foods Associates.

Jane made significant contributions to the political and civic development of Oneonta in the 1970s. In 1971, she ran for alderman of Ward 4. She was a member of the first Environmental Advisory Board and later of the Public Service Board.

Of special importance to Jane was her continual spiritual search in her study of the Bible. Over the years she taught various Sunday school classes and church seminars. She held numerous local and state offices in Women's Aglow Fellowship. With her husband, she was a Core Group member of the regional Ecumenical Charismatic Prayer Meeting. For 20 years, she led a weekly women's Bible study and prayer meeting in her home.

Friends may call Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

A service to celebrate the life of Jane Y. Lawson, conducted by the Rev. Royal Mattoon and the Rev. Catherine Parsons, will be held on Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Southside Wesleyan Church, 4/10 mile east of the Holiday Inn on Route 23.

Along with flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., Teen Challenge, Inc. P.O. Box 021687, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11202-9977, or the Southside Wesleyan Church, 5300 State Highway 23, Oneonta, N.Y.
We will miss her being with us, yet we take comfort and rejoice in knowing that she is now in the presence of Jesus.

Edith M. Conte
ONEONTA — Edith M. Conte, 79, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 21, 1919, in Oneonta, the daughter of John and Teresa (Cirillo) Conte.

For more than 30 years, retiring several years ago, Edie was employed by the Grand Union in Oneonta.

A lifelong area resident, Edie was a member of St. Mary's Church, its Rosary Society, and its Young at Hearts Club.

During her high school years, she was considered as an outstanding athlete, and especially excelled in basketball. She was a recipient of the volunteer of the year award, presented to her by Opportunities for Otsego.

Edie is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Antoinette and Edward Colwell of Oneonta; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four sisters and a brother, Jenny Scalise, Minnie Sandoli, Josephine Eyesman, Ann Ploutz and Frank Conte.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call Thursday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Opportunities for Otsego.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Livingston Latham
UNADILLA — Livingston (Link) S. Latham, 90, a longtime resident of Unadilla died Friday afternoon, Sept. 10, 1999, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 22, 1908, the son of Arthur and Lulu Latham in Deposit.

He was predeceased by his wife, Antoinotte H. Latham; his sister, Candace Hathaway; and his son-in-law, James Kelly.

Link is survived by his three daughters, Antoinette Kelly of Chappaqua, Candace Latham of Ridgewood, N.J., and Maria and Larry Bittinger of Deephaven, Minn. He is also survived by his grandchildren, James Kelly of Tokyo, Japan, Nettie Kelly of Monterey,  Calif., Candace Kelly of  Washington, D.C., Owen Bittinger of San Francisco,  Calif., and Maggie Bittinger of New York.

Mr. Latham, a retired attorney, graduated from Union College and Albany Law School. He enjoyed a 63-year career, which included being district attorney of Otsego County and Surrogate Judge of Otsego County and president of the Unadilla Bank, and also being named president of both the New York State Surrogate's Association and the Otsego County Bar Association.

Mr. Latham came to Unadilla in 1933, and began his law practice with Charles Flaesch. He eventually went into private practice and for a short time, was in partnership with Joseph A. Mogavero Jr., who went on to become district attorney and the Otsego County Family Court Judge.

Mr. Latham also served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Latham was regarded with respect and admiration by his fellow members of the bar.

Link was an avid outdoors man. He enjoyed hunting on his hill and annual fishing trips to his camp on the Ottawa River in Canada. He took great pride and delight in watching each of his grandchildren establish their own careers. He was especially pleased when his granddaughter, Candace Kelly, followed in his footsteps by becoming an attorney, She is now the personal assistant to the U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno.

At Mr. Latham's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. In consideration of Link's regard and life of service to his community, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Community Foundation of Unadilla, N.Y., Inc., P.O. Box 608, Unadilla, N.Y. 13849.

Glenda L. Yager
OTEGO — Mrs. Glenda Louise Yager, 55, of Otego died Monday evening, Sept. 13, 1999, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 8, 1944, in Oneonta, the daughter of Glenn and Ruth Collison Van Buren Simmons.

Glenda married Royce Yager on Nov. 21, 1964, in West Oneonta.

Glenda had been a unit secretary for A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, up until several years ago. She was a lifelong area resident and had grown up in Oneonta. She enjoyed her home and family as well as gardening. Glenda was also an avid card player.

Glenda is survived by her husband, Royce Yager of Otego; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James and Heidi Yager of Woodstock, Conn., and Brian Lyn Yager and his friend, Dawn Wright, of Otego; one sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Norman Quackenbush of Oneonta; one brother and sister-in-law, Ronald G. and Jackie Simmons of Oneonta; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lois and Fred Hunsucker of Otego and Robert and Hope Yager of Maryland; two grandchildren, Ryan Charles Yager and Kirsten Ivy Yager. She is also survived by two aunts, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen Miller, pastor of the First Christian Church, Otego, officiating.

Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Glenda Louise Yager.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Douglas Muzzy
OXFORD — Douglas Muzzy, 46, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at the Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

He was born on March 12, 1953, in Greene, the son of Douglas and Ruth (Craft) Muzzy.

On Aug. 20, 1977, in the Oxford Baptist Church he married Roberta William, who survives.

Besides his wife, Roberta of Oxford, he is survived by his children, Megan Muzzy, Kyle Muzzy, Katlyn Muzzy and Malorey Muzzy; his father, Douglas Muzzy of Missouri; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna and Roger Sperling of Remsen, Diane Muzzy of  Johnson City, Dale and Thomas Crowley of Portsmouth, N.H., and Dorothy and Lee LaPierre of Woburn, Mass.; his sister-in-law, Lois Muzzy of Carlisle, Pa.; and his mother-in-law, Isabelle Alger of McDonough. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law also survive.

He was predeceased by his mother, Ruth Muzzy and his brother, David Muzzy.

Doug was a graduate of Greene Central School, Class of 1971 and the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill with an A.A.S. degree in animal husbandry.

He was a member of the advisory committee and a leader in 4-H and had served on the American Dairy Association committee and as a director of DHIA. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Dairy Princess Committee, the Holstein Association and the South New Berlin Milk Co-op.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at 11 a.m. from the United Church of Oxford, Fort Hill Park, Oxford, with the Rev. Allen C. Lang, pastor officiating. Burial will be in Warn Ten Broeck Cemetery, Oxford,

Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford on Thursday, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to a fund for his children.

Mildred Thorne
SCHENEVUS — Mildred Thorne, 52, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 14, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Mildred was born Sept. 14, 1947, in  Jefferson, the daughter of Henry and Virginia (Rifenbark) Peddle.

She married Donald Thorne on Aug. 27, 1977, in Butts Corner.

Mildred is survived by her husband, Donald Thorne of Schenevus; four children, John Shaw of Schenevus, Matthew and Mark Shaw and Steven Hoag of Atlanta, Ga.; two stepsons, Bruce and Laura Thorne of Plymouth, Mass., and Timothy Thorne of Rensselaer; two stepdaughters, Theresa and Louis Mareno of Casper, Wyo., and Hope and Dave Shook of Valetia; four aunts, Barbara Baldwin of Davenport, Delsie Peddle, Velma Rideout and Mildred Peddle of Newfoundland, Canada; special friends, Marvin, Donna and Amy Mulford of Hartwick and the John Pondifino family of Otego; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Frank W. MacCracken Jr., pastor of the Word of Faith Fellowship Church in Maryland, officiating. Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 1249 Upper Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 or the American Lung Association, 587 Main St., New York Mills, N.Y. 13417 .

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Virginia M. Race
MOUNT VERNON — Virginia M. Race, 84, formerly of Schenevus, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at St. John's Hospital in Yonkers.

She was the daughter of Charles Harold and Edna Matilda (Jacobsen) DeWerth, and was married to the late Alexander Race.

A graveside service will be Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at 4 p.m. at the Elk Creek Cemetery, with the Rev. William Robert Thompson, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Schenevus.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Martha Johnston
WALTON — Miss Martha Cable Johnston, 103, of Walton, a scrappy, peppery woman who never shied from a challenge, but embraced life with eager arms, died peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born in Walton on Nov. 24, 1895, she was the daughter of of Ada Wilson and Emmett Robert Johnston. She never married.

Miss Johnston took pride in the fact that her family history reached back to the founding of this nation.

A graduate of Walton High School, she went on to the State University College at Oneonta for her teachers' training, and taught first in a one-room schoolhouse in Franklin, walking five miles on Sunday from Walton, spending the week with a local family and returning home on weekends by horse and buggy.

Miss Johnston received her bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 1940, and took a teaching position in Pelham. She retired in 1959, and returned to Walton to live with her parents and sister, Irene Johnson. During that time, she worked for the Pond Insurance Agency.

She always carried with her a belief in a strong family structure, and in the importance of education. Her life was an endorsement of that philosophy, as her successes were due to the forward thinking of her own stalwart family in bucking the trend to discourage the education of females.

Miss Johnston was possessed of a deep faith in God, and was the oldest living member of the First Congregational Church, Walton.

She was a gregarious individual who liked nothing better than to visit friends and family, spend time at the bridge table, read, knit and combine any and all activities with the sound of recorded opera arias in the background. She also enjoyed traveling, and made many trips abroad, as well as about her own country.

Surviving Miss Johnston are a niece, Zelinda Zingaro-Smith of San Francisco,  Calif.; and two nephews, Robert Zingaro of St. Louis, Mo., and Raphael Zingaro of Ankara, Turkey.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Irene  Johnson and Janet Zingaro; and by her special friend, George  White.

A graveside memorial service will be held at the Walton Cemetery on Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Paul Cronin officiating. Following the ceremony Miss Johnston's friends are invited to a reception at the Paternoster home at 39 Gardiner Place, where her family will be in attendance.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so make memorial contributions to the William B. Ogden Free Library, Gardiner Place, Walton.

The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful care that Miss Johnston received during the last years of her life, both at home and at the Countryside Care Center.

Arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way, Walton.

Ray S. Lottridge
UTICA — Ray S. Lottridge, 81, of the Masonic Home of Utica, and formerly of New Berlin, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in Utica.

He was born July 7, 1918, in Pittsfield, the son of Fred and Pearl (Lottridge) Lottridge.

He married Marguerite Remington on Sept. 9, 1945, in New Berlin. She died June 22, 1998.

He spent his childhood in the town of Pittsfield. He attended New Berlin Central School, New Berlin,

He worked as a milk tester and also for the town of Pittsfield. He then worked as the head of the maintenance department at New Berlin Central School until his retirement.

He was past president of the New Berlin Central School Board.

He was a member of Phoebus Lodge 82 of New Berlin, and the Ziara Shrine of Utica. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin.

Ray is survived by his children, Linda and Gary Schriber of Westbrook, Maine, and Diane and Paul Orlowski of Marcy; one daughter-in-law, Karen Lottridge of West Burlington; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson; one brother, Lewis Lottridge of Stone Ridge.

He was predeceased by two sons, David and Fred Lottridge.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Corners Cemetery, town of Columbus.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Masonic Brotherhood Fund.
