Raymond Borden
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — Raymond (Ray) Borden, formerly of 15 Birch St., Oneonta, N.Y., died Aug. 2, 1999, in Boynton Beach, Fla., after a long illness.

Ray worked in sales for Jewel Tea Co. and Durkee's Bakery, while living in Oneonta, N.Y. In Florida he was employed by Scobee, Ireland, Potter Funeral Home and Winn-Dixie Markets.

Ray is survived by his wife of 56 years, Catherine (Meade) Borden; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Robert Kmieciak of Schenectady, N.Y., and Janice and Terry Hamilton-Smith of Lexington, Ky.; and three grandchildren, Cindy Kmieciak of Phoenix, Ariz., Guy Hamilton-Smith of Lexington, Ky., and Erin Syron of Oneonta, N.Y. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Raymond Potter of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and his brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Ruby Borden of Bullhead, City, Ariz. Survivors also include sister-in-law, Florence (Meade) Stuck and many nieces and nephews who loved him very much.

A memorial Mass was held Aug. 7, 1999, at St. Vincent Ferrer Church at Delray Beach, Fla.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at the East Worcester Cemetery, located on Main Street in East Worcester, N.Y., at 11 a.m.

Blanche S. Wyckoff
GILBOA — Blanche S. Wyckoff, 80, of Wyckoff Road, Gilboa, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Albany Medical Center Hospital, Albany.

She was born July 29, 1919, in Cincinnatus, the daughter of Joseph and Stella (Willard) Sharp.

She married Imer H. Wyckoff on Sept. 14, 1946, in Cortland. Imer died Oct. 10, 1984.

Blanche lived most of her life in Gilboa. She graduated from the State University College at Cortland. She taught sixth grade at the Gilboa Central School for a number of years.

Blanche is survived by a daughter, Camilla Wyckoff of Schenectady; a son and daughter-in-law, Grant and Patricia Wyckoff of South Cairo; grandchildren, Richard and Melissa Wyckoff; and nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services will be held at the Wyckoff family plot in the Gilboa Cemetery in Gilboa.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Blanche's memory to either the Conesville Rescue Squad, Gilboa, N.Y. 12076 or the Gilboa-Conesville Central School Scholarship Fund, Gilboa, N.Y. 12076.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Ronald K. Spoor
MOUNT VISION — Ronald K. Spoor, 60, of Mount Vision, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at his home in Mount Vision.

He was born April 14, 1939, in Oneonta, the son of Gordon and Elma (Sessons) Spoor.

He married Donna Sprague on July 20, 1963 in Mount Vision.

He had been employed by the Clark Farms of Cooperstown and had also worked at the Lane Farm of the Delhi area. He most recently had been employed by the Bendix Corp. of Sidney as a machinist until recently when he took an early retirement.

He was an avid camper.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, and two sons, Ken Spoor of Westford and Duane Spoor of Pittsfield; one daughter, Tandi Spoor of Mount Vision; his father, Gordon Spoor of Mount Vision; a brother, Frank L. Spoor of Laurens; two stepsisters, Kathy Lindsey of New Jersey and Ruth Hansen of Denmark.

His grandchildren include Audrianna and Eric Ericson of Mount Vision, Randy and Christopher Spoor of Port Crane and Brandon Spoor of Westford.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Mount Vision Cemetery with the Rev. Cyrus Budine Jr. officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish may make donations to his wife, Donna, so that she may make equal donations to the Catskill Area Hospice and the American Cancer Society in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Gerald P. Schultz
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Gerald P. Schultz, 58, of Little Lakes Road, died on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 26, 1940, in Cooperstown, a son of the late Gilbert and Mary Tennant Schultz.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, he was educated in Richfield Springs Central School. For more than 20 years, he worked for his brother at Bill's Garage in Springfield Center, retiring in 1989. Gerald was an avid bowler, stock car racing fan and took great pride in the antique car that he had restored.

Surviving are two sons, Michael Schultz of  Texas and Christopher Schultz of Mohawk; one daughter, Mary Schultz of Mohawk; three brothers, L. William Schultz of Springfield Center, Joseph Schultz of Ford Bush and James Schultz of Mohawk; two sisters, Eleanor Garnsey of Schuyler Lake and Barbara Micklic of Little Falls; one granddaughter, Page Schultz; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Francis, Ralph, Gilbert and Robert Schultz; and one sister, Grace Gibolca.

Funeral service will be on Sunday at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating. Interment will follow in Springfield Center Cemetery.

Calling hours are Friday from 7-9 p.m.

Chester Cleaveland
DELHI — Chester Cleaveland, 91, originally from Franklin, died Oct. 7, 1999, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born Feb. 12, 1908, in Franklin, the son of Levi and Mamie (Dumond) Cleaveland.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Seath) Cleaveland of Countryside Care, Delhi; two daughters, Anita Rowell of Kingston and Betty Robinson of  Texas; two sons, Chester Jr. of Franklin and David of Tivoli; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Two daughters, Mary Palmer and Doris Cleaveland; and two brothers, Ray and Harold Cleaveland; predeceased him.

Mr. Cleaveland was a machinist at Bendix in Sidney.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Hamden Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Frederic Tompkins
CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Frederic N. Tompkins, 57, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, N.Y.

He was born July 8, 1942, in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., the son of Earl S. and Hekla (Cairnes) Tompkins Sr.

Mr. Tompkins graduated Purdy's Central High School, Purdy's, N.Y., in 1960, where he was selected as an All-League basketball and baseball player. He earned his bachelor's of science degree in agricultural science from Penn State in 1964, where he played defensive lineman for the Nittany Lions football team from 1960-1963.

On Nov. 26, 1966, he married JoAnn Scott in St. James Episcopal Church, North Salem, N.Y.

He was a partner of Tompkins Farm in North Salem, N.Y., from 1964-1972 before moving to Cherry Valley, where he owned and operated the Spring Hollow Farm until his death.

Mr. Tompkins is survived by his wife, JoAnn; one daughter, Christine; and two sons, Matthew and Stephen, all of Cherry Valley; a brother, Robert S. Tompkins and his wife, Kathleen; a sister, Elaine F. Tompkins, all of North Salem, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Richard B. Scott of Cherry Valley, and many other loving relatives.

Fred was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Earl S. Tompkins Jr. in 1981 and Richard D. Tompkins in 1972.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, with Mr. Lyman  Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Calling hours will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Mr. Tompkins' memory may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Cherry Valley Fire Department or the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

William A. Hubbell
ONEONTA — William A. Hubbell, 69, the mayor of Margaretville, died Oct. 7, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Nov. 15, 1929, in Kingston, the son of Ralph Hubbell and Lillian Archibald.

He married Dolores VanBenschoten on Dec. 26, 1951.

Bill entered the Army in 1951, was wounded in Korea in September 1951 and was in rehabilitation until 1954.

In 1955, he worked at Harold VanValkenburg's garage. He was the former secretary of Halcottsville Fire Department.

In 1958, he was an assistant bookkeeper for Mayes Company, was elected Justice of the Peace and a member of the town board.

Late in 1958-59, he was credit manager of Old Margaretville Hospital and also became commander of Middletown Legion Post 216 and treasurer of Delaware County Legion organization.

From 1960-75 he was the M.C.S. business manager and purchasing agent.

In 1964, he was elected as council member of the Margaretville Village Board and was a council member until the death of Al Nelson in 1996. He then became mayor and has been mayor ever since.

In 1975, Bill moved to the strip and owned Bill's Spirit Shot. He retired in 1985.

He was a member of the Mark Board, the Margaretville Rotary, as the oldest continuous member. He was secretary for 10 years, and a member of the American Legion for 49 years. He served on the Margaretville Memorial Hospital Board for 14 years and served as president of the Delaware County Magistrates Association. He also was on the church council for four years as Elder of the United Presbyterian Church.

He also received the Keene Roadman Memorial Award. In June 1999, Bill was presented a plaque in recognition for outstanding dedication to the community.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Hubbell of Margaretville; two sons, John and his wife, Cindy Lou Hubbell, of Margaretville, and Jeffrey Hubbell and his fiancee, Lorrene Willmore, of Houston,  Texas; four grandchildren, Sarah, Nicole, Erica and Ryan; one sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Richard Finch of Halcottsville; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Carolyn Hubbell of Kelly Corners; one sister-in-law and her husband, Dorissa and Thomas Smith of Margaretville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at the United Presbyterian Church of Margaretville. Diane Wickham, the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell and the Rev. Bert More will officiate.

Burial will be in Kelly Corners Cemetery, Kelly Corners.

Calling hours will be from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions in memory of Bill can be made to the Memorial Fund at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville Memorial Hospital Ambulance Fund or the Memorial Fund of the United Presbyterian Church of Margaretville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Raymond Bennett
FLY CREEK — Raymond R. Bennett, 58, of Fly Creek, died Friday morning, Oct. 8, 1999, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 7, 1940, in Brooklyn, a son of Raymond H. and Lillian C. (Frising) Bennett.

He married Shirley A. Krajci on Nov. 4, 1960, at the United Methodist Church in Amityville, Long Island.

Ray was raised in the New York City area and graduated in 1959 from the Amityville High School. He first was employed by his father and later went on to become a salesman. In the mid-1960s, Ray and his family moved from Long Island to Fly Creek, where he eventually started Bennett Motor Sales Inc. For more than 36 years, Ray has been the owner of this successful motorcycle and snowmobile dealership.

Over the years, Ray has been a member of many clubs and organizations including the National Rifle Association, the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce, the National Motorcycle Council, the American Paint Horse Association and the National Pinto Association.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman and boater and had a great love for fast cars, motorcycles and racing. A lover of the great outdoors, he enjoyed riding and being around horses and pulling tractors.

Ray is survived by his wife of 38 years, Shirley A. Bennett of Fly Creek; three daughters, Bonny A. Harris of Rochester, Robin M. Mulligan of Cooperstown and Kelly S. Enck of  Pennsylvania; two sons, Raymond R. Bennett Jr. and Richard A. Bennett, both of Cooperstown; eight grandchildren; his mother, Lillian C. Bennett, and his father, Raymond H. Bennett, both of Florida; five sisters, Christina, Barbara, Lillian, Patricia and Debra; and several other relatives.

At the request of the family, funeral services will be private with the Rev. Lin R. Quinlan, co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, officiating.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, from 12:30-2 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m., when Ray's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 780 W. Perry St., Buffalo, N.Y. 14222-1617.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Frieda Kostbar
LAURENS — Mrs. Frieda Kostbar, 91, of Laurens, died Thursday evening, Oct. 7, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Nov. 4, 1907, in New York City, the daughter of William and Hulda (Manke) Timer.

She married John C. Kostbar on May 8, 1927. Mr. Kostbar died on May 17, 1991.

Frieda was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Laurens.

She is survived by two sons, Robert J. Kostbar of Staten Island and John "Jack" W. Kostbar of Laurens; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Bertha George of Garattsville and Wanda Karlen of Maine; two brothers, Daniel Timer of Mount Vision and Albert Timer of Laurens; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Laurens, with the Rev. Lynn Ash, retired Lutheran minister, officiating.

Burial will be in the Laurens Cemetery.

The family will be present on Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, from 7-9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, for those who wish to call.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Laurens, N.Y. 13796 or to the Laurens Emergency Squad in loving memory of Frieda Kostbar.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Charles F. Dabritz
BINGHAMTON — Charles F. Dabritz, 57, formerly of Margaretville, died Oct. 7, 1999, in Binghamton.

He was born March 19, 1942, in Brooklyn to Charles G. Dabritz and Frances M. Gruber.

He has lived in Binghamton for the past several years.

He is survived by two brothers, Frederick Dabritz of Andes and Joseph Dabritz of Margaretville, and also by nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

The Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell will officiate.

Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery.

Calling hours will be before the service on Monday morning.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
