Shirley Butts  Jones Age, 92 of 3180 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, PA died on Friday April 7, 2006 at the Heatherwood Assisted Care Facility in Honeybrook, PA. Born April 6, 1914 in Utica, N.Y. she was the daughter of Benjamin VanVranken and Virginia (Philo) Butts. She married Horace William  Jones on December 26, 1941, in Utica N.Y. He predeceased her July 7, 1988. Mrs.  Jones was a long time summer resident of Mt Arab Lake, New York and had been employed as an artist. She graduated from the National Academy of Art and
Design in 1938. She was a loving mother, wife, and grandmother. She was a den mother for her local Cub Scout troop, and held Bible Studies in her home. Shirley was also an accomplished artist who engaged in spinning, weaving, caning, painting, pottery, and jewelry making. She also sewed and knitted clothes for herself and her family. Above all, she loved the Lord and dedicated her life to serving others as a volunteer Christian counselor. She is survived by two sons Phillip H.  Jones of Ellenburg Depot, N.Y. and Christopher S.  Jones of Downingtown, PA, their respective wives Patty and Sheila, four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Her father, mother and two sisters Bernice Lowery and Dorothea Hughes predeceased her. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough-Rennell Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. A graveside service will take place in Gail Cemetery at a later date with Pastor David Boyea officiating. Dorothy E. (Traynor) Bontecou, 84, of Oneida Ave., Lake Placid, passed away Friday, April 7, 2006 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. She was born in Lake Placid in 1921 the youngest daughter of Raymond J. and Johanna Collins Traynor. Dot was a life long resident of Lake Placid and was a graduate of Lake Placid High School Class of 1938. Dorothy married her first husband Herbert Benty in 1943 and in 1967 she married Peter Bontecou of Millbrook, NY. Dot had been employed in the retail clothing business as a sales person at some of the finer stores in the Lake Placid area including Razook's, Peck and Peck and The Country Store. Through the years, Dorothy mad many friend and had lots of stories to tell. She enjoyed knitting, reading and her family. She is survived by her son Scott Benty and his wife Linda of Lake Placid, her daughter Lynn Hebert of Potsdam, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She's also survived by an aunt, Mrs. Betty Nugent of Lake Placid and her "other daughter" Barbara  Jones Benware of Lake Placid. Friends may call Tuesday, April 11 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. Cremation will follow. A funeral service will be held Monday, April 17 at 10 a.m. at Lake Placid Baptist Church. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in May. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 326 Auxiliary, 316 Main. Street, Lake Placid, NY 12946.

Blanche Elizabeth Gilpin, age 92, formerly of Pine Street, Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, April 04, 2006 at Uihlein Mercy Center Nursing Home in Lake Placid. Born in Onchiota, New York on December 23, 1913, she was the daughter of Dominic and Mary (Gendron) Patnode. Mrs. Gilpin was a life long resident of Saranac Lake and had been employed at the Post Office at Paul Smiths College until her retirement in 1969. She volunteered at the Saranac Lake Adult Center for many years and is a past member of the Saranac Lake Women's Civic Chamber, past member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Bernard, and was a member of the St. Bernard's Church Prayer Group affiliated with the Resurrection House. She is survived by three sons Harold Gilpin of Kissimmee, FL; James Gilpin of Pottstown, PA, and David Gilpin of Baton Rouge,  Louisiana; two daughters Diana Pataki of Hadley, NY and Sally Gilpin of Saranac Lake, NY, 9 Grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Her father and mother, several brothers and sisters, and one granddaughter Sali Gladd preceded her in
death. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Friday, April 7, 2006 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A bible vigil service will take place at 3:45 PM on Thursday afternoon. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday at St. Bernard's Church, with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake. Friends wishing to remember Blanche Elizabeth Gilpin may make memorial contributions to St. Bernard's School or the Resurrection House in care of the funeral home.

Richard Metz, age 89, of McKenzie Pond Road, Ray Brook, NY died Monday,
April 03, 2006 at the Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid where he had been a resident since 1995. Born in Denville, New Jersey on June 03, 1916, he was the son of Albert and Emma (Riker) Metz. Mr. Metz married Dorothy O'Connor on December 30, 1978 in St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake by Rev. McAvoy. He has been a resident of Saranac Lake for over 50 years coming from New Jersey and was employed as a truck driver for Trudeau Sand and Gravel for many years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a good friend and neighbor, always willing to help you out. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Metz of Saranac Lake, NY; two sons Robert Metz and his wife Gail of Saranac Lake, NY; Edward Metz and his wife Joyce of Clinton, NJ; one sister Helen Chammings of Bud Lake, NJ, 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, one son Ronald Metz, one sister Gladys Cunningham, six brothers Albert, Warren, Clarence, Theodore, William and George Metz. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. The Metz family will receive friends at the Uihlein Mercy Center Reiss Memorial Chapel on Thursday from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A mass of Christian burial will take place at 12:00 P.M. on Thursday at Uihlein Mercy Center, with Rev. Patrick O'Reily officiating. Following cremation the burial will be at Black Brook Cemetery in the spring. Robert A. Smith, age 89, of 41 Margaret St., Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, March 20, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center at Saranac Lake. Born in Saranac Lake, New York on June 9, 1916, he was the son of William and Mattie (Lyons) Smith. Mr. Smith was a graduate of Saranac Lake High School and worked in the family plumbing-contracting business and later the armament industry in the Mohawk Valley before enlisting in the Army. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army Corps of Engineers in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany from 1942 until 1946. After his military service he worked at local sanitariums and great camps, ran a furniture store and worked in direct sales. He joined the Saranac Lake Post Office and worked as a letter carrier from the early 1950's until his retirement in the late 1970's. He was a member and a founder of the Wachtung Archery Club, belonged to several bowling leagues, was a member of the Elks Lodge 1508, the Loyal Order of the Moose, the Paint and Pallete Guild, the VFW and was a long-time member of the Saranac Lake Fish and game Club. He was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed hunting. He is survived by a son: Robin R.A. Smith and his wife Jacqueline and a grandson: Brian Alexander Smith and his wife Ellie of Guilderland, NY. He was preceded in death by his wife: the former Dorothy Ellen O'Neil on October 1, 2004. They were married on November 21, 1938. He was also pre-deceased by his father: William Smith and his mother: Mattie Lyons Smith. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Thursday, March 23, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9PM. A veterans service will be held at 7:30 PM followed by a Bible Vigil at 7:45 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday March 24, 2006 at 11:15 A.M. at St. Bernard's Church, Saranac Lake, with Father Jeffrey Hubbard officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery in May. James C. Crump Jr., age 58, of 60 Church St., Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at his home. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 17, 1947, he was the son of James and Lucille (Myers) Crump Sr. Mr. Crump had been a resident of Saranac Lake for the past 12 years. Before moving to Saranac Lake he had been previously employed in the television industry as a cameraman in Buffalo, NY and worked for Queens hospital in New Yoprk City and for the Parks Department. He also worked for Gallo Wine and Liquor. He is survived by his father: James Crump Sr. of Kings Point, NY, and a brother: Michael Crump of Far Rockaway, NY. He was preceded in death by his mother Lucille Myers Crump. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 23 at 2PM at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake with the Reverend Randy Cross, pastor of the Adirondack Alliance Church, officiating. Friends wishing to remember James C. Crump may make memorial contributions to their favorite charity in care of the funeral home.

David A. Perry, 50, of 130 Main Street, Lake Placid died Saturday, March 18 2006 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. He was born October 6, 1955 in Springfield, MA, the son of the late Gertrude (Aikin) and Urban Perry who survives him of Brimfield, MA. David worked as a farmer in Brimfield, MA. He presently worked in Lake Placid at Zig Zag Pub. In addition to his wife Denise (Corey) Perry, he's survived by his father and daughter Dana Perry of Lake Placid, son Douglas Perry of Lake Placid, brother Richard husband of Louise Perry, Thorndike, MA; brother James Beaty, CT, sister Margaret Reznik of Westport, MA; sister Susan Perry of Brimfield, MA and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A funeral service will be held at the Clark Funeral Home at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. The family requests donations be made to the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department.

Theodore E. Cayea, 91, of Acorn Street, Lake Placid passed away at his home Sunday, March 19, 2006. He was born in Malone February 2, 1915 the son of Ernest and Elizabeth (Durant) Cayea. He was married to Mary (Courtney) Cayea. A skilled craftsmen and carpenter, Ted took great pride in his accomplishments. He had worked on various camps and houses in the North Country. Ted was a veteran of World War II serving in the navy. Mr. Cayea was a member of the Lake Placid American Legion Post 326. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending time at the camp he built where he enjoyed boating, hunting, and endless hours of working on camp projects. Ted is survived by his wife Mary of Lake Placid; one son, Ted Cayea and his wife Fayne of Essex Junction, Vermont; one daughter, Ann Fitzgerald and her husband Edward of Lake Placid; one brother Charles Dupaw of Jacksonville, Florida, and a sister Dorothy LeClair and her husband Carl of Morrisonville, New York. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Conan Fitzgerald, Sarah Cayea, and Scott Cayea and several nieces and nephews. A sister Marion Marvin and two brothers, Fablan Cayea and Vincent Cayea all died earlier. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2006 from 5 to 8pm at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A Bible vigil service will be held at 6pm and an American Legion prayer service will be held at 8pm at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at 11am at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. Reverend Joseph Morgan will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in May. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service in his memory.

Lillian M. Duffy, age 76, of 62 Edward St., Saranac Lake, died Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 62 Edward St. Born in Auburn, New York on September 24, 1929, she was the daughter of Marion and Bertha (Nilan) Titus. She married Charles Duffy on June 26, 1948 in Auburn, New York. He predeceased her in 1982. Mrs. Duffy was a resident of Saranac Lake for most of her life and had been employed by Saranac Lake Central School in food service retiring in 1991 as a cook after twenty years of service. Following that she worked part time in food service at Paul Smiths College. She enjoyed knitting, crochet and volunteered at St. Luke's Lunch Box. She is survived by four daughters, Faye Clark and her husband Steven of Rutland, VT; Kathleen Jenner and her husband David of Gathersburg, MD; Colleen Duffy and her husband Russ Schaefer of Phoenix, AZ; Patricia Duffy of SanDiego, CA; three sons Robert Duffy and his wife Mary of Lake Clear, NY; Charles "Tug" Duffy and his wife Marla of Bloomingdale, NY; and Hugh "Kelly" Duffy and his wife Jennifer of Saranac Lake, NY; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Arthur and William Titus and one sister Perry Harris, preceded her in death. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Sunday, March 19, 2006 from 12PM -2PM and 4PM - 6PM. A bible vigil service will take place on Sunday afternoon at 1:45 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:15 A.M. on Monday at St. Bernard's Church, with Reverend Jeffery Hubbard officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake in May. Grace C. St. John, age 81, of 44 Marshall Street, Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born in Ballston Spa, New York on June 03, 1924, she was the daughter of Chester and Margaret (Dennison) Ratelle, Sr.. She married Hubert St. John on June 8, 1942 in Lake Placid. He predeceased her on May 30, 1989. Mrs. St. John has been a life long resident of Saranac Lake. She was employed in the Housekeeping Department at the Holiday Inn in Lake Placid for many years until her retirement in 1996. She was a member of the Saranac Lake Moose Club and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by six children Margaret Kilburn of Saranac Lake, NY, Patricia Ecret of Saranac Lake, NY, Violet Dora of Saranac Lake, NY, Ray St. John of Saranac Lake, NY, Terry Isele of Madison, TN, and Heidi Coventry of Tupper Lake, NY; one daughter-in-law Linda St. John Parker of Cadyville, NY; three brothers Chester, Theodore and Louis Ratelle, Sr. all of Saranac Lake, NY; 19 grandchildren; 17 Great Grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother two sons Arthur St. John, and Hubert St. John; three brothers Joseph, Clarence, and Francis Ratelle; two sisters Dorothy Martelle and Susan Ratelle. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Friday, March 17, 2006 from 6PM - 9PM. A prayer service will take place Friday evening, at 8:30 PM. Benjamin D. Melville,44, of Keene Valley, died on June 9,2006 in an automobile accident. Ben was the son of Dean F. and Sandra A. Melville of Norwich, NY. He is survived by his cherished daughter, Shannon, his brothers, Garth A. Melville of Weehawken, NJ and Matthew H. Melville of AuSable Forks, NY, by his grandmother Clara P. Baldwin of Rochester, NY, by several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and by his parents. Ben was married to the former Sarah Manley, from whom he had been separated for several years. Ben was born in Ithaca, NY on March 30, 1962. He graduated from Lyndon Institute in Lyndon, Vermont, and was employed as a carpenter. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Calling hours will take place on Wednesday, June 14 at the Keene Valley Congregational Church from 7:30-9:30 pm. The funeral will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday June 15 at the church. Burial will take place at the Evergreen Cemetery near Norwich, NY at 2:00 PM on Saturday June 17. "Bunnie" Catillaz of Seneca Avenue in Saranac Lake passed away at the home of her daughter, Mary Catillaz in Rochester NY on Sunday June 11, 2006 of pancreatic cancer. She was born Mary Bernadette Higgins on July 26, 1924 in Prescott, Ontario Canada, eldest child of Charles and Thelma Higgins. In her early 20's she lived briefly in Utica NY, where she worked at the Utica National Bank. It was there that she met Joseph C. Catillaz whom she married in 1949. Joseph predeceased her in 1996. Bunnie and Joe moved to Saranac Lake in 1950, beginning a family in the community that they would happily serve, and that would support them for a lifetime. Bunnie worked in the business office of the Saranac Lake Central School district until her retirement in 1987. Throughout her life, Bunnie gave freely of herself, not only to her eight children, but also as a member of the Women's Civic Chamber, St. Bernard's School and Church, the Ladies of the Elks, many Winter Carnival Committees, and the Adult Center. She also provided volunteer support for several years at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. She is survived by her brother, William Higgins (Helen) of Brockville, Ontario Canada and her eight children: Michael Catillaz (Margaret) of Victor NY, Mary Catillaz (Michael Fiorella) of Rochester NY, Thomas Catillaz of Saranac Lake NY, Timothy Catillaz of Ganesvoort NY, Kathleen Catillaz (Ed Rosenberger) of Salt Lake City UT, Anne Catillaz (Robert Canning) of Victor NY, Patricia Catillaz (Thomas Stone) of Pittsford NY, Clair Catillaz (Jeffrey Yorkey) also of Pittsford NY, twenty grandchildren, and a niece and two nephews. Celebratory calling hours will be held at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Friday June, 16th from 4-8 pm and a mass will be held at St. Bernard's Church at 11 am on Saturday, June 17th with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Cremation will follow. Donations honoring Bunnie should be directed to Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad or High Peaks Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Mary W. Wallace, devoted wife of Ben Wallace; loving mother of Laurie Daniell, Betsy Wallace and Craig Wallace; ad caring grandmother of Gordon Daniell, Heather Daniell, Tara Wallace and Timothy Wallace has died. In lieu of flowers, donations in memoriam can be made to the Adirondack Park Institute, c/o The Adirondack Park Visitors Center, PO Box 3000, Paul Smiths, N.Y. 12970. Gail Whyte Jones, 77, of Whiteface Ave., Bloomingdale, NY, died Thursday, June 8, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born in Germantown, PA on October 3, 1928 she was the daughter of John Joseph Whyte and Louise (Moore) Whyte. Gail grew up in New York City and moved to Saranac Lake and Bloomingdale in 1979. She had been a resident of Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid since 2003. Her life-long passion was art; she graduated from the Girls Commercial (Prospect Heights), a girls arts high school in 1946. In her later years she went on to earn an associates degree from North Country Community College. Gail taught art at Camp Adirondack in Gabriels, NY, and continued her involvement in the arts for much of her life. Some of her work is currently on display at the Ticonderoga Museum. She is survived by one brother: John Whyte, of North Hudson, NY, a sister: Ann Whyte, of Schroon Lake, NY, three sons: John Joseph, of Rochester, NY, Robert Whyte and his wife Anne of Paradise Valley, AZ, and Michael  Jones and his wife Kelly Hass, of Saranac Lake, NY, one daughter: Leslie (Jones) Long and her husband Brad, of Shepherdstown, WV, and five grandchildren: Mitchell Jones, of Saranac Lake, NY, Lindsey and Callie Long, of Shepherdstown, WV and Allison and Christina Whyte, of Paradise Valley, AZ and three cousins: Roy, Tom and Terry O'Neil. Gail was pre-deceased by her husband: Richard Stokes  Jones in 1989 and a cousin: Jack O'Neil. There will be a memorial service at the Blue Seed Studio, 24 Cedar Street Saranac Lake, NY on Monday, June 12, at 3pm. Friends wishing to remember Gail may make memorial contributions to the Saranac Lake Young Arts Association, PO Box 1130, Saranac Lake or the Blue Seed Studio.
