Elizabeth Tenkate
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Elizabeth (Betty) Tenkate, 72, of Little Lakes Road, died on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, in her home, with her family at her side, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on June 3, 1927, in Paterson, N.J., a daughter of the late Nicholas and Clara Douma Stelpstra.

She was raised and educated in Paterson, N.J., she graduated from the Eastern Christian Academy.

On Sept. 10, 1947, she married Henry Tenkate. A loving and devoted marriage of 29 years, until his passing on May 19, 1977.

From 1948 until 1981, Betty lived in Warwick, where she was very active in church activities.

For many years she was employed as the advertising manager of the Warwick Valley Dispatch weekly newspaper, retiring to Richfield Springs in 1981.

She was a devoted member of the Mohawk Reformed Church, served as deacon, as well as many other church groups and committees. She was the co-facilitator of the Mohawk Clergy grief support group called G.O.A.L. from 1989 to 1992.

Betty enjoyed bowling, sewing, and making crafts for the church bazaar. She especially enjoyed crafting and collecting angels.

Betty was a caring person who also possessed an abundance of faith and strength. To know her was to share these feelings and know that your life was forever changed for the better.

Surviving are her devoted daughter, Carol Vriesema and her husband, Neal, of Leesburg, Fla.; two granddaughters, Cara Lee and her husband, Lee Matthews of Faison, N.C., and Corrie J. Vriesema and her friend, Mike Brown of Cedarville; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Kaylee Matthews of Faison, N.C.; one brother, Charles Stelpstra of Cottonwood, Ariz.; many nieces, nephews and close friends.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas Roy and Henry Jr.; and a sister, Cornelia Jellema.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, from 1 to 4 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs.

Funeral service will be held in the Mohawk Reformed Church on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. James DeWitt, pastor, officiating. Interment will take place on Friday at 1 p.m. in the Florida Cemetery, Florida, N.Y.

Memorial donation may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Mohawk Reformed Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Robert R. Porath
CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Robert R. Porath, 84, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at his residence.

He was born April 10, 1915, in Buel, the son of Frederick and Grace (Moore) Porath.

He was educated at the Cherry Valley Central School and served in the United States Army during World War II.

Mr. Porath worked at Jensen-Baldwin in Cherry Valley for many years and The Meadows, Cooperstown, as a maintenance person until his retirement.

He loved to spend summers camping and the fall hunting.

Mr. Porath is survived by his companion and lifetime partner, Nellie Bouck of Cherry Valley; he was father of Marie and John Pitlak of Brooklyn; and father to Shirley and Milton Beaulieu, Marian and Raymond Yerdon, Leonard and Carol Bouck, all of Cherry Valley, Joseph and Star Bouck of Edmeston, Jim and Helen Bouck of Roseboom and Willard and Linda Bouck of Salt Springville; grandchildren, Mary and Anthony Falsetta of Brooklyn, and John and Susan Pitlak; and great-grandson, John James of Staten Island; a brother, Donald Porath of Cooperstown; two sisters, Charlotte Camp of Cooperstown and Bertha Baldwin of Cherry Valley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was like a grandfather to many and a good friend to all.

He was predeceased by a sister, Elsie Smith; and two brothers, Fred and Clarence Porath.

Funeral services will take place on Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at 2:30 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Alan Miller, pastor of the First Christian Church, South Valley, officiating. Burial will follow in the Roseboom Cemetery, Roseboom.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mr. Porath's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Ralph L. Ford
OTEGO — Mr. Ralph L. Ford, 80, of Otego, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 27, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

He was born Oct. 7, 1919, in Otego, the son of Harry J. and Ella B. (Oliver) Ford.

Ralph married the former Marion Yager on March 8, 1958, in Oneonta, who survives him.

A veteran of World War II, Ralph had served in the United States Army.

A lifelong area resident, Ralph was a custodian for Otego Central School for many years and had owned and operated Fords Refuse Service in Otego.

He was a member of the Otego Baptist Church and had enjoyed hunting as a pastime.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Marion Ford of Otego; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Hannelore Yager of Otego, Douglas and Lisa Ford of Ganesvoort, and Richard and Sandy Ford of Otego; one daughter, Carolyn D. Ford of  Washington; one sister, Catherine Barnes of Oneonta; one brother, James Ford of Oneonta; two nephews; and one niece.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Alan C. Hatch, pastor of the Otego Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego, on Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to either the Alzheimer's Association, the State University College at Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, care of Joyce Powell, or to the Save Our Children (SOC Group) care of Otego Baptist Church, Main Street, Otego, N.Y. 13825.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Nellie E. Champlin
NORTH HARPERSFIELD — Nellie E. Champlin, 86, of Middlebrook Hill Road, North Harpersfield, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.
She was born Feb. 11, 1913, in North Harpersfield, the daughter of Clarence and Harriet (Seeley) Nichols.

She married Basil Champlin on Oct. 31, 1936, in Oneonta. Basil died June 14, 1990.

Nellie was a resident of North Harpersfield all of her life. She was a member of the North Harpersfield United Methodist Church.

Nellie enjoyed cooking, reading, gardening, and crocheting very much.

Nellie is survived by three daughters, Linda Champlin of  Jefferson, Carolyn Moyster of Binghamton and Debra Dault of Oscoda, Mich.; two sons, Roger and Larry Champlin of  Jefferson; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marian Churchill of Stamford and Dorothy Clapper of Delhi; one brother, Leland Nichols of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Private family funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt, pastor of the Fleischmanns United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday afternoon between 1 and 2 at which time the family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Nellie's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Northeastern New York Chapter, Leatherstocking Branch, P.O. Box 1364, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Vivian M. Connelly
GOODYEAR LAKE — Vivian Marie Connelly, 83, of Goodyear Lake died Wednesday Oct. 27, 1999, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 5, 1916, in Albany, the daughter of Stephen C. and Millie (Kiemle) Voelker.

For many years, Vivian was employed by the New York State Department of Compensation from which she retired several years ago.

Vivian is survived by a cousin, Charles Voelker of Stewart, Fla. She is also survived by her close friends, Darlene and Ralph More and family of Goodyear Lake, and Judy and George DiMartin of Oneonta.

A private graveside service will be held on Saturday in the Elmwood Hill Cemetery in Troy.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Wilford J. Boice
WALTON — Wilford J. Boice, 89, of RD3, Box 330, Loomis Brook Road, Walton, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 26, 1999, at his home.

He was born on Jan. 24, 1910, in the town of Tompkins to June Charles and Lida (Schultes) Boice.

He married Julia Loomis on Oct. 7, 1935, in the Baptist Parsonage in Deposit, who predeceased him on Jan. 14, 1997.

He was member of the Trout Creek Community Church, a retired dairy farmer and a truck driver for Ben Reynolds Construction Co. up to the age of 85. He formerly performed field work for the ASCS for Delaware and surrounding counties and was an agent and director of the Chenango County Mutual Insurance Co. of Norwich.

Wilford is survived by a daughter, Ruth Ann Reynolds of Walton; a son, June R. Boice of Norfolk, Va.; three grandchildren, Arthur Reynolds, Kenneth Reynolds and Julie Parish; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; also several cousins.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at 1 p.m. at Trout Creek Community Church, with the Rev. Allen Bujno, pastor of First Baptist Church of Walton, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to: Trout Creek Emergency Squad or Trout Creek Community Church.

Ruth S. Brazie
SOUTH VALLEY — Mrs. Ruth S. Brazie, 72, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

She was born May 22, 1927, in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Henry and Viola (Miller) Schankenberg.

She married Harold Brazie, who survives.

Before her illness, Ruth was very active in the family's snowmobile business and real estate. She was a member of the South Valley Women's Club.

Besides her husband, Harold Brazie of South Valley, Ruth is survived by three sons, Randy Brazie of Dallas,  Texas, Rodney Brazie of South Valley and Robby Brazie of Garden Valley, Idaho; three grandsons; a sister, Joan Lackey, and her husband, Peter, of Brentwood; a brother, Robert Schankenberg, and his wife, Lee, of Groton, Mass.; sister-in-law, Irene Weaver; and eight nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Rickey Brazie; and a brother, Henry Schankenberg.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church, South Valley, with the Rev. Alan Miller, officiating. Burial will follow in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Mrs. Brazie's memory may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Kathryn P. Gossoo
UNADILLA — Kathryn Pearl Gossoo, 91, of Unadilla, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born to the late George and Viola (Lamoure) Stewart in Hardenburg on April 24, 1908.

Kathryn was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, and was an avid needleworker.

She retired from E.C.D. of Bendix as an assembler.

Kathryn will be missed by her daughter and son-in-law, who cared for her for more than 40 years.

Kathryn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Norman and Viola Marks of Unadilla; two daughters-in-law, Geneva Gossoo Sanford and Frances Gossoo; five grandchildren, Kathryn Constable, Joe Gossoo and his wife, Robin, and Marilyn Madison and her husband, Clay; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by infant daughter, Marilyn; two sons, Rodney and James Gossoo; and grandson, Sam.

Services are private and at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad or The Hospital whom extended her loving care.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

John Alfred Folds
COOPERSTOWN — John Alfred Folds, 73, formerly of 542 West Main St., Hartwick, and most recently of 110 Fair St., Cooperstown, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999.

He was born in Danvers, Mass., on March 31, 1926, a son of David and Bridgette (Crane) Folds. The family moved to the West Winfield area during the 1930s, where John spent his childhood and teen years.

John served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater with the Americal Division.

Upon his return to the United States after his Army service, John returned to the West Winfield area.

He married Doris Louise Tilley on June 5, 1949, in Milford, after a five week courtship. They had one son, Claud "Flip" Folds on April 2, 1950.

John returned to military service in 1950, with the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. During his military service he worked in communication on bases in Anchorage, Alaska, Ismir, Turkey, St. John's, Newfoundland and North Africa. He was a member of the Honor Guard at the 1961 inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. He was also stationed at several other bases throughout the U.S. before retiring in 1969, after 20 years of service.

After his retirement, John and his family moved back to the area, living the majority of the time in Hartwick. He was employed at the Hunt Union at the State University College at Oneonta in the food services department.

John was a member of the Hartwick American Legion Post 1567. He was an avid gardener, loved spending time with his family and friends, and reminiscing about all the places he had traveled.

John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Doris of Cooperstown; his son and daughter-in-law, Claud and Connie Folds of Hartwick; his granddaughters, Lisa (Folds) McCook of Cooperstown and Jennifer Folds of Hartwick; three great-grandchildren, Jeremy Folds, Samuel McCook and Liza Folds; (he was eagerly awaiting the birth of a fourth great-grandchild whose birth is expected any day now), a brother, David Folds of Florida; three sisters, Frances Richards, Rita Folds and Elizabeth Paul, all of the Utica area; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Lester, James and Russell Folds; and one sister, Pearl Savicki.

A memorial service will be held at the Hartwick Christian Church in Hartwick on Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Laverne Saxer, pastor, officiating.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

"All people die, but not everybody lives." We are blessed to know that John did.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Charlotte Necrason
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Charlotte Pierson Necrason, 85, of Rio Verde Way, Port St. Lucie, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at University Hospital, Tampa, Fla.

She was born March 20, 1914, in Cooperstown, the daughter of the late Judge Adrian Abraham Pierson and Anna (Houck) Pierson. She had an interest in genealogy and was always proud of being a direct descendent of Abraham Pierson, who was one of the founders and the first rector of Yale University.

Charlotte was predeceased by her husband, Edmund Joseph Necrason, in 1979; and her brother, Adrian Abraham Pierson.

Charlotte graduated from Cooperstown High and the Knox Schools in Cooperstown and in 1936 graduated from Connecticut College with a major in English. Upon graduation, she returned to Cooperstown and worked at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital as head of the Follow-Up Department.

She married Edmund Joseph Necrason on May 27, 1937, and moved to New York City.

She lived at 23 Elm St., and raised her family in Oneonta. Charlotte was active as a volunteer at A.O. Fox Hospital and devoted much time and energy to the local Brownies and Girl Scouts. She was president of the Bugbee PTA during the time her four children attended Bugbee School.

Charlotte was also active in the company her husband founded, Paragon Engineering. She later became secretary/treasurer of E.J. Necrason & Sons, Incorporated.

Being a past member of the Oneonta Country Club, Charlotte took her golf and bridge games to Florida in 1982, and during her retirement she continued to participate in these and many other activities. She was a member of First Congregational Church, Port St. Lucie. Charlotte leaves many dear friends in her retirement community in Florida.

Charlotte is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, George and Constance Fitzelle of Kingston, R.I.; two sisters-in-law, Myrle Necrason of Riverside,  Calif., and Josephine Necrason of Oneonta, N.Y.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joanne and Nick Necrason of Oneonta, N.Y. and Patricia and Thomas Necrason of Saranac, N.Y.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Christine and Joseph Rabbia of Tampa, Fla., and Charlotte Hanson of Oneonta, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren, Ed Hanson of Richmond, Va., Conrad Hanson of New York City, Scott Hanson of Buffalo, N.Y., Jennifer Necrason of New York City, Adam Necrason of Burlington, Vt., Jeffery Rabbia of Tampa, Fla., Erica North of Tampa, Fla., Anna Necrason of Burlington, Vt., Emily, Nathan, Nicolas and Samuel Necrason of Saranac, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren, Brooke Hanson and Grant North; and several nieces and nephews.

It was Charlotte's wish to be cremated. Graveside services will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, in the spring.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10019.

Arrangements are with the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, N.Y.
