Marion Perrine
ONEONTA — On Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Marion Perrine, went to be with her Lord.

She spent her last year in the care of the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Schenevus, the daughter of William H. and Katherine (Horner) Rowe.

She married Harry Perrine on May 3, 1942, in Oneonta. Harry died Nov. 4, 1978.

Marion was a wonderful and loving care giver to all who were fortunate to share in her life. She loved to bake, bowl, play cards and play Bingo. She especially loved sharing in the lives of her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and John Elderkin and Carol and Chuck Boyd; and her daughter-in-law, Linda Perrine; her grandchildren, Chris and Craig Young, Diane and John Thompson, Robert Wheeler, Michael and Michelle Decker, Barbara and Greg Mott and Chris and Dawn Perrine; stepgrandchildren, Lorraine and Brian Corneilson and Steven Boyd; a beloved sister, Gladys Govern; an endearing niece, Barbara Govern; a very special sister-in-law, Helen Rowe, and sisters-in-law, Evelyn and Fran; and many nieces and nephews; her 15 great-grandchildren, Christen, Mark, Matthew, Skylar, Gaylen, Melissa, Jessica, Ashley, Nate, Andy, Logan, Christopher, Megan, Kenny, and Eric.

Marion was predeceased by her son, Douglas Perrine.

The family invites you to share their special memories on Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. For those who wish to join us, we will gather at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta. Marion's graveside prayers will be held on Tuesday morning, Nov. 9, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad, Unadilla, N.Y. 13849 in loving memory of Marion Perrine.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Dorris M. Ryerson
NEW BERLIN — Dorris Mullet Ryerson, 90, of New Berlin, formerly of Worcester, Mass., and widow of Prescott Ryerson, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

Dorris was born Nov. 18, 1908, in Spencer, Mass., the daughter of Elton and Evelyn Mullet.

She married Prescott Ryerson in 1956.

She had worked at the H.H. Brown Shoe Company in Worcester, Mass., for 45 years until her retirement in 1993.

Dorris is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Marian Mullet of Edmeston; her nieces and nephews; Edward and Donna Mullet, Leah and Nicholas Urquhart, James and Kathy Mullet, Martha and Martin Winsor, John and Debra Mullet, James and Pamela Mullet and their children.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Edward.

There will be no calling hours. Private services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pathfinder Village, Edmeston, N.Y. 13335 or to a charity of choice.

Steven Vredenburgh
DELHI — Steven Vredenburgh, 49, of Newport News, Va., formerly of Delhi died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at his home in Newport News, Va.

He was born Aug. 18, 1950, the son of Ernest and Ruth Vredenburgh.

His mother, Ruth, survives him.

Memorial services will be on Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the United Ministry Church in Delhi, with the Rev. Mark Chatterton officiating.

A luncheon at the church will follow the service. Burial will be in Margaretville Cemetery.

Donations in his memory may be made to the United Ministry Church, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Harry L. Whispell
MARYLAND — Harry L. Whispell, 68, died peacefully at his home in Maryland on Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999.

He was born, May 3, 1931, in Hobart, the son of Lorenzo and Flower (Dent) Whispell.

Harry married Dorothy Hammond Clark on July 1, 1990, in Cooperstown Junction.

He was a 20-year veteran in the United States Army.

Harry is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy, of Maryland; three daughters, Sheila Whispell of Portlandville, Cynthia Whispell of Mount Vision, and Brenda Vaughn of West Oneonta; one son, Harry L. Whispell II and his fiancee, Jacklyn LeoGrande, of Maryland; three stepdaughters and their spouses, Vivian and Douglas Hendrickson of Maryland, Bonnie and Ed Conrow of New Berlin and Heidi and Donald Elie of Keystone Heights, Fla.; one stepson, Dennis Clark of Oneonta; five sisters, Mrs. John (Dorothy)  Schmidt of Wells Bridge, Violet O'Dell of Otego, Mrs. Wilhelm (Helen) Sander of Delhi, Ramona Currie of Franklin and Ella Effner of Oneonta; two brothers, Larry and JoAnn Graham of Missouri and Clayton James Graham of California; two granddaughters, April Hunter of Oneonta and Stephani Vaughn of West Oneonta; three grandsons, Woodrow Vaughn of West Oneonta and Codie Lansdall of Portlandville, and Harry L. Whispell III of Maryland; two stepgranddaughters, Deloris Hendrickson of Maryland and Emma Conrow of New Berlin; three stepgrandsons, Douglas Hendrickson Jr. of Maryland, Joshua and Lee Conrow of New Berlin; his faithful companion `Cat;` and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Cooperstown Junction Cemetery in Cooperstown Junction. Lt. Michael Knepp of the Oneonta Salvation Army will officiate. The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, from noon until service time for those who wish to call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of one's choice in loving memory of Harry L. Whispell.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

G. McMurtrie Godley
MORRIS — G. McMurtrie Godley, a U.S. Ambassador, a career diplomat and an active public leader, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta. He was 82. The cause of death was heart failure.

In the past 23 years since his retirement from the State Department, Godley was active in local community organizations.

Among other activities he served as chairman of the boards of Hartwick College as well as Fox Hospital, both in Oneonta. He was one of the founders and longtime president of the Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown and went on to become its chairman of the board and at the time of his death he was chairman emeritus of the opera.

Ambassador Godley, known to his friends as "Mac" had an enormous zest for life and a generosity of heart, intellectual energy and spirit, some of his friends were quoted as saying.

His career as a diplomat as just as notable. As a junior Foreign Service officer, he attended the San Francisco Conference in 1945, when the United Nations was founded.

He was fluent in French and specialized in politico-military affairs. He had postings in Marseilles, Paris, Brussels, Bern and Cambodia. He served as ambassador to the Congo (1964-66), to Laos (1967-73) and to Lebanon (1974-76). He retired in 1977, due to cancer of the throat. He had also served in the Navy during World War II and the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

Ambassador Godley was born in New York City on Aug. 23, 1917, to Frederick Augustus Godley and Anne Franchot Godley. His father was professor of architecture at Yale University and his mother was a descendant of Stanislaus Pascal Franchot, an 18th century settler of the Butternut Valley.

Ambassador Godley was educated at Hotchkiss and Yale (Class of 1939).

Ambassador Godley is survived by his wife of 33 years, Elizabeth McCray Godley; and two sons, George of London and Nicholas of Madagascar. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Frederick A. Godley of New Canaan, Conn.; and his sister, Anne Godley St. Goar of Brookline, Mass.; and seven adoring nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at 11:30 a.m. at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris and will be followed by the burial service at Hillington Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, friends could make contributions to: The Morris Emergency Squad; Fox Hospital Auxiliary, Oneonta; or the New York Sheriff's Association, Albany.

John Albert Jensen
ISLIP — John Albert Jensen, 81, of Islip, Long Island, formerly of Cooperstown, died on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at his home.

He was born in Hartwick on Jan. 18, 1918, the son of Chris and Anna Jensen.

He was employed by Islip Union Free School District on the custodial staff for the past 19 years. Formerly he worked for Bruce L. Hall Inc., in Cooperstown for 20 years doing carpet/tile installation and furnace repair.

For 11 years he had his own business doing similar work.

He served in the second World War in the European Theatre of Operations as a staff sergeant in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 6, 1945. He received a Bronze Star for meritorious service on Feb. 15, 1945, for outstanding service in supervision of a field artillery battery mess, both in Garrison and in the field. He belonged to the World War II Memorial Society, the American Legion, the Ninth Infantry Division Association, and United Public Service Employees Union.

John is survived by his children, Bonnie J. Halsey of Manchester, N.H., Kathy J. Kosoc and Richard A. Jensen of Albany and Suzanne J. Turner of Fallston, Md. He was the grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of two. He is also survived by his sister, Clara Jensen Clapp of Barton, Fla.; and his brother, Irving "Buster" Jensen of Gilbertsville.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Stanley Jensen of Fly Creek and Norman Jensen of Peekskill.

Visitation was held at Overton Funeral Home on Main Street in Islip, Long Island, on Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, for family and dear friends. A future memorial service will be held on Thanksgiving Day in Delmar, for family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Islip High School in his name.

Gilbert F. Smith
WORCESTER — Gilbert F. Smith, 87, of Worcester, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

He was born Sept. 27, 1912, in Cornwallville, the son of Albert E. and Minnie A. (France) Smith.

He married Irene DeLong on March 30, 1934, in Worcester. She predeceased him on March 25, 1998.

Mr. Smith moved to Worcester in the eighth grade. He lived on the family farm, Smith Jersey Dairy. The family had a retail milk route in Worcester, East Worcester and Schenevus.

In 1970, he and his family moved into the village of Worcester. Mr. Smith then worked for Rua & Sons Hardware Co. in Cobleskill and after retirement spent the winters in Bradenton, Fla.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Worcester United Methodist Church, and at one time was an official on the board and was the treasurer for the church; he was a member and past master of the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge 592; a member and past officer of the Worcester Historical Society; a member of the Worcester Grange 1274; GLF/Agway councilman; on the board of directors for the Eastern Artificial Breeders; a councilman for the town of Worcester; and on the Worcester Assessment Board.

Mr. Smith is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Bernard Hoye of Worcester, Gwen and Donald Petro of Petaluma,  Calif., and Harriet and Douglas Cornwell of Schoharie; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald G. and Sue Smith of Cold Brook and Bruce A. and Janice Smith of Oneonta; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Matt E. and Charlotte Smith of Syracuse; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be from noon until the service time at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Worcester.

A Masonic service will be held at 1 p.m. by the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge 592 and the funeral service will follow, with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

Contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Smith to the Worcester Historical Society, care of Ruth All, 1545 County Highway 39, Worcester, or the United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 358, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Wilson A. Breslin
GILBERTSVILLE — Wilson A. "Pete" Breslin, 85, of Gilbertsville, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at the New York State Veterans' Home in Oxford.

He was born April 17, 1914, in Gilbertsville, the son of Leo and Phoebe Breslin.

He married Bertha Mae Schaffer on July 21, 1932, in Gilbertsville. She died on Jan. 6, 1992.

Pete served in the United States Army during World War II, and was discharged in 1946 as a corporal.

For a period of 38 years, retiring several years ago, he worked for E.C.D. Bendix in Sidney, where he was a shop foreman.

Pete was a member of the Gilbertsville First Presbyterian Church, and American Legion Post 183, Sidney. He was a 44-year and honorary life member of the BPOE Oneonta Lodge 1312, as well as serving as exalted ruler, past district deputy grand exalted ruler, and past state vice president.

He was an avid golfer, and a former member of the Oneonta Country Club.

Pete is survived by a daughter, Wilma Marie Laraway of Venice, Fla.; and a son, Richard D. Breslin of Biloxi, Miss.; two sisters and a brother, Lillian Smith of Oneonta, Sally Finch of Oxford and Gordon Breslin of Oneonta; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister, Howard and Frederick Breslin and Helen Rivenberg.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Dr. Donald Boardman, pastor of the Gilbertsville Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

His family will receive friends one hour before the service on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Kenneth V. Ploutz
STAMFORD — Kenneth Vincent Ploutz, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at his home at 2 River St., Stamford. at the age of 75, surrounded in the arms of his loved ones, after a brief illness.

He was born May 22, 1924, in Hardscrabble, the town of Roxbury, the son of Helen (Tyler) and Howard Ploutz.

On Oct. 10, 1943, he married Irene Tompkins in Stamford, where they have resided for the past 56 years. They recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.

After attending Roxbury Central School, Ken obtained employment with the New York State Department of Transportation, where he retired as a supervisor after 35 years of service.

Ken was an avid outdoorsman and baseball enthusiast. He was a past member of the Stamford Rod and Gun Club and the National Rifle Association.

Ken was a loving, hardworking, and devoted family man.

Ken is survived by his loving wife, Irene; two daughters, Brenda Warner of Harpersfield and Kathy Ward and son-in-law, Brad, of Oneonta; four grandsons, Jason and Dillon Warner and Matthew and Aaron Ward; and two great-granddaughters, Asia and Aaliyah. He is also survived by a brother, Howard Ploutz of Grand Gorge; sisters-in-law and a brother in-law; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a special niece, Diane Reed.

He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Doug Ploutz and Harold Ploutz; and also his grandson, Joshua Warner.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at the family plot in the Stamford Cemetery, with the Rev. Waylen Bray, pastor of the Stamford Baptist Church, officiating. Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, on Tuesday afternoon, from 2 to 4 p.m. and evening from 7 to 9 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Ken's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Vincent G. Hinkley
ITHACA — Vincent G. Hinkley, 81, of 1446 Slaterville Rd., Ithaca, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 6, 1918, in Roxbury, he was the son of the late Harold S. and Ethel Hinkley.

He was the loving husband of Catherine Martin Hinkley for 55 years and the loving father of Vincent G. Hinkley Jr. of San Jose,  Calif., and Marilyn H. Mazza of Ithaca. He was the beloved grandfather of Michael E. Mazza of Sacramento,  Calif., Christina M. Mazza of University Park, Pa., and Daniel B. Mazza of Ithaca, whose many activities he had enjoyed: birthday celebrations, graduations, dance recitals, and hockey, lacrosse and baseball games.

He is also survived by brothers and sisters, Caroline (Erving) Thompson, Leighton (Joan) Hinkley, Gary (Bonnie) Hinkley, and Glenford (Mary) Hinkley, all of Roxbury, Edna (Peter) Busier of Saratoga Springs and Clyde Hinkley and Shirley (Donald) Kellerhouse of Grand Gorge; sisters-in-law, Beatrice Hinkley and Ida Sines of Roxbury; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers and sisters, Sanford Hinkley, Roger Hinkley, Jean (Hinkley) Dugan and Angie (Hinkley) Herrick, all of Roxbury.

Vincent graduated from Roxbury Central School and the State University College of Agriculture at Delhi.

He served five years in World War II as a TSGT in the Air Force based in the South Pacific flying on B29's.

He Worked as a DHIA supervisor in Delaware, Steuben and Albany counties before joining Eastern AI Corp. (Genex) where he completed 37 years of service in the cattle breeding industry in New York and New England. He held administrative positions in most areas of Eastern's sales department and also served as the director of field training. He managed the Eastern Wide Area Telephone Service and he was involved with technician training, tours, field equipment and special products.

Vincent was a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ithaca where he served as elder, assistant Sunday school treasurer, usher, and on various committees. He had served on the agricultural boards at Cobleskill and Delhi state schools of agriculture. He was a member of Heartmates, past chairman of Varna Senior Citizens; and co-chairman of the Varna Pinochle Club.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Anita Cummings officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the E.C. Wagner Funeral Home of Ithaca, 421 N. Aurora St.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Vincent's memory to Hospicare of Tompkins County, 172 E. King Rd., Ithaca, N.Y. 14850.

James F. Musson
GILBERTSVILLE — James F. Musson, 84, of Gilbertsville, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Feb. 23, 1915, in the town of Butternuts, the son of Donald F. Musson and Lucy (Daniel) Musson.

He married Mary Walton on Nov. 1, 1938, in Sidney.

He worked as a union carpenter with Local Union 258 for more than 30 years, retiring in 1978.

He was a lifelong area resident and had been a former member of the Eagle Hose Company of Gilbertsville. He was also a member of the Gilbertsville Baptist Church.

James is survived by his wife, Mary; his companion, George V; one son, Edward Musson; two daughters, Elizabeth Kiel and Lucille Davis; two sisters, Theresa Rudnitski and Louise Richards; one brother, Albert Musson; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Robert Musson.

A memorial service was held at the Gilbertsville Baptist Church on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating.

There will be no calling hours and his final resting place will be in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Gilbertsville Baptist Church in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
