Ava Pickens
MORRIS — Ava Pickens, 94, of Morris, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at the Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born in Afton on April 1, 1905, the daughter of Charles  Johnson and Bessie (Lawrence) Johnson.

She was married to Harold Pickens in Morris in 1931. She was a homemaker and had been employed at the Sidney Silk Mill several years ago.

Ava is survived by her son, Donald and his wife, Shirley of Medena; her sisters-in-laws, Emma  Johnson of Morris, Elizabeth  Johnson of Florida, Claudine Stafford of Morris and Ruby Foote of Morris. She is also survived by five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris. Graveside services will be private and at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Elmer A. Chase
NEW BERLIN — Elmer A. Chase, 89, of New Berlin, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in Cooperstown.

He was born April 17, 1910, in New Lisbon, the son of Linn and Lena (Ashley) Chase.

He married Viva Furgason on March 27, 1932, who survives.

He spent his childhood in the Pittsfield area. He attended local area schools.

Elmer is survived by one son, Roger Chase of New Berlin; and several cousins.

He was a dairy farmer in Pittsfield.

Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Fire Department or the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin.

Steven Vredenburgh
DELHI — Steven E. Vredenburgh, 49, of Newport News, Va., formerly of Delhi, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in Newport News, Va.

He was born Aug. 18, 1950, in Margaretville, the son of Ernest and Ruth (Low) Vredenburgh, He was single.

He is survived by his mother, Ruth Vredenburgh of Delhi; a sister, Carolyn Ferguson of Delhi; a nephew, HM1 Jay Ferguson, United States Navy stationed in Virginia, and his wife, Kathy and son, Rourke; a niece, Pamela Ferguson, and her children, Ashley and Michael of Delhi; and several cousins.

Mr. Vredenburgh was the owner of Falls Mills Motors in Delhi; a former member of the Delhi Fire Department and Emergency Squad; past member of the Delhi Community Band and participated at the State University College of Technology at Delhi in musical and theater productions.

In Virginia he worked as a service consultant for Patriot Buick and Pontiac in Williamsburg, Va., and was a member of Williamsburg Players and Poquoson Va. Theater Group.

Memorial services will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at United Ministry Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Mark Chatterton officiating. A luncheon at the church will follow the service. Burial will be in Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the United Ministry Church, Delhi.

Arrangements are with MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Dorothy Hartwell
ONEONTA — Dorothy V. Hartwell, 89, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

She was born June 3, 1910, in Oneonta, the daughter of Jacob and Addie (Mumford) Vosburgh.

Mrs. Hartwell was a housekeeper for area hotels and motels before her retirement years.

Mrs. Hartwell is survived by one son, Arnold J. Hartwell of Swansee, S.C.; and one daughter, E. Jean Westcott; and several grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Keith Van Dewerker, pastor of the West End Community Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Josephine Bohigian
SIDNEY — Josephine Lockwood Bohigian, 79, of Sidney, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

She was married to John Bohigian on July 13, 1947. He predeceased her in 1997.

Josephine is survived by a son, David Bohigian; and three daughters, Patricia (Mrs. Paul Hamilton Sr.), Margaret and Roberta Bohigian; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at 1 p.m., at Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz officiating.

Friends may call at their convenience on Friday, Nov. 12, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial gifts may be made to Sacred Heart Church Endowment Fund or the Sidney Fire Department.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Louise Schott
HAMDEN — Louise "Aunt Lou" Schott, 97, of Hamden, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where she had been a resident for the past year.

She was born Feb. 20, 1902, in Queens County, the daughter of George and Rosa (Haussman) Schott.

As a young woman Louise was trained in the millinery trade in which she was later employed most of her life in Metropolitan New York.

For many years she lived in Glendale with her sister, Jeannette Schott, who died in 1975, after which Louise moved to Hamden, where she lived with her sister, Helen Thomson, who died in 1992.

Active in the community, Louise was a member of the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church; "Merry Eight" Pinochle Club; Chambers Hollow Craft Club; and the Home Bureau.

She was extremely fond of her dog, "Hooch" and her cat, "Boots."

Surviving are a niece, Rose Agnes Laird of Hamden, and her children, Nicole and Christine Laird; and a nephew, George O. and his wife, Linda Thomson of Ludlow, Vt., and their children, Amanda, Marshall and Brenton Thomson; as well as many close friends.

Friends are invited to call today at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at the DeLancey U.P. Church, by the Rev. Leigh Holder-Bobo, pastor, and burial following in the Bovina Cemetery, Bovina Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the DeLancey U.P. Church.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Harlow Pickens
MORRIS — Harlow Mason Pickens, 86, of Morris, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at the N.Y.S. Veterans Home in Oxford.

He was born in the town of Morris on April 19, 1913, the son of Edwin and Achsa (Martin) Pickens.

He married Helen King on Sept. 3, 1933, in Nimmonsburg, Pa. Helen died in 1982.

Harlow worked as an auto mechanic with Smith-Ford of Norwich.

He was a member of the Morris American Legion Post 1135 and a member of the United Methodist Church of Morris. He was also the Morris corespondent for the "New Berlin Gazette" for many years. He was also remembered in the Butternut Valley for his artistic abilities with poetry.

Harlow is survived by a son, William Pickens of Morris; three daughters, Kathleen Marble of Florida, Linda Sorensen and her husband, Herbert, of Morris and Candace Bourn of Edmeston; two sisters, Daisy Pickens of Newark Valley and Rosamond Jenner of Oneonta; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Pickens; and two sisters, Lillian Lamb and Arlina Miles.

Funeral services will be Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at 2 p.m. in the United Methodist Church in Morris, with the Rev. Kip Stratton officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Morris Emergency Squad in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Sarah Kenny
LIVERMORE,  Calif. — Mrs. Sarah Frasier Kenny, 88, of Livermore,  Calif., and formerly of Otego, N.Y., died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at the Hacienda Nursing Home, Livermore,  Calif.

She was born Feb. 10, 1911, in Glencraig, Scotland, the daughter of Patrick and Jane (Fraser) Dougan.

She was married twice. Her first marriage was to Edward Frasier in 1930. Her second marriage was to James T. Kenny in 1983.

Mrs. Kenny was a homemaker in her own home and was a 65-year resident of Otego, N.Y. She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, N.Y.

Mrs. Kenny is survived by her son, Robert Frasier of Danville,  Calif. She is also survived by three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, N.Y., with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, officiating. Burial of cremains will be at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego, following the memorial services.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego, N.Y.

Andrew Markley II
RICHMONDVILLE — Andrew P. Markley II, 79, of West Main Street, died Friday, Nov. 12, at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill, after being stricken at his residence on Thursday.

Mr. Markley was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Schenevus, the son of Joseph J. and Jenny (Farro) Markley.

Mr. Markley was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the 27th Division at the Pacific Theater. He was wounded in action and was a recipient of the Purple Heart as well as the Combat Infantry Badge. Mr. Markley was a member of the American Legion Post of Richmondville and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Warnerville. He also belonged to the Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Markley retired in 1981 from the Delaware and Hudson Railway based in Oneonta. For 43 years, he was a lieutenant of police for the railway. He also served as police officer for the village of Richmondville for 31 years.

Mr. Markley was a 32 degree Mason of the Free and Accepted Masonic Temple in Cobleskill.

He is survived by his wife Rose (Zitko) Markley, whom he married Sept. 15, 1946; a daughter, Joan Marie Bongiorno of Binghamton; two sons, John Z. Markley and Andrew P. Markley III, both of Cobleskill; three sisters, Theresa, Katherine and Marie, all of Florida; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday.

Burial will be in the Richmondville Rural Cemetery with full military honors.

Lulu A. Bartz
ARCADIA, Fla. — Lulu A. Bartz, 98, of Arcadia, Fla., and formerly of Unadilla and Walton, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Blake Medical Center, Bradenton, Fla.

She was born Nov. 5, 1901, in Tacoma, the daughter of Arthur and Alice (Youngs) Rutenber.

She was married to the Rev. William E. Bartz, who predeceased her in 1990.

She was a retired elementary school teacher and assistant superintendent of the Wyoming Conference Children's Home in Hillcrest.

Mrs. Bartz was a member of the Unadilla United Methodist Church and the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Dorothy Bartz of Tyler,  Texas, and Richard and Margaret Bartz of Walton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and George Brown and Dorothy and Sidney Webb, all of Arcadia, Fla.; three sisters, Dorothy Downie of Otego, Evelyn Rosa of Franklin and Florence Campbell of Mount Vernon,  Texas; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at the United Presbyterian Church, Walton, with the Rev. Dr. Miriam Hathaway, interim pastor, and assisted by the Rev. Dr. John Topolewski, senior pastor of the Vestal United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 112 Main St., Unadilla, on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 14, 1999, from 2-5 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Suite, Sarasota, Fla., or a charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

C. Ruth Campbell
UNADILLA — C. Ruth Campbell, 88, of Unadilla, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born Feb. 5, 1911, the daughter of Louis and Edith (Chapman) Fairchild.

She was married to Stanley K. Campbell, April 12, 1929, in Milford. Mr. Campbell died May 29, 1972.

Mrs. Campbell retired in 1976 as cafeteria manager at the Unatego Central School.

She was a member of the Unadilla Firemen's Auxiliary, Unadilla Grange, Unadilla United Methodist Church, Unadilla Rebekah Lodge and the Unadilla and Wells Bridge senior citizens clubs.

Mrs. Campbell is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Charles  Johnson of Fairbanks, Alaska; three sons and daughters-in-law, Walter and Lucille Campbell of Unadilla, Stuart and Janet Campbell of Hammondsport and Stanley Jr. and Gail Campbell of Los Lunas, N.M.; also 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by a brother, Clifton Fairchild.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. Robert C. Conway of Unadilla, officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Fire Department Building Fund.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

James R. Moore
DEPOSIT — James R. Moore, 78, of Deposit, died Nov. 12, 1999, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Moore of Deposit; his sons and daughters, Katherine Becker of Guilford, Richard B. Moore of Stamford, Barbara Lampman of Trumansburg and Jeffrey Moore of Deposit; and four grandchildren, Kyle Moore, Joel Moore, Christopher Lampman and Arianna Moore.

He was predeceased by his son Steven Moore and by his son-in-law Oldwin Becker.

He was a retired field service representative of the Bendix Corp. in Sidney. He was active in Boy Scouting for 62 years and had served as commissioner for the Otschodela Council. He was a member and past vestryman of Christ Church in Deposit, member of the Board of Directors of the Deposit Community Theater and served two terms as the assessor of the town of Deposit.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Christ Church in Deposit with Rev. Nickolas Servetas Jr., rector of the church, officiating.

Burial will be in Hambletville Cemetery in the town of Deposit.

Friends may call at the Zacharias Funeral Home in Deposit on Sunday from 3-5 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Deposit Community Theater or to the Otschodela Council of the Boy Scouts in Oneonta.

Margaret S. Beard
CAROLINA SHORES, N.C. — Margaret Steele Beard, 67, of Carolina Shores, N.C., died Nov. 10, 1999.

She is survived by her husband, Albert, and her four children, Rebecca Marshall, Elizabeth Blackburn, Bradley Beard and Sarah Daiss. She also has 10 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A committal service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. at the East Bloomfield Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at the Congregational Church in East Bloomfield at 3 p.m., following the committal.

Memorial services will also be held at the Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 15. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Margaret Beard Scholarship Fund, care of the Wilber National Bank, 62 Main St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326. The proceeds will be given as a scholarship in remembrance of Margaret at the Cooperstown Central School.

Raymond A. Barry
EAST WORCESTER — Mr. Raymond A. Barry, 63, of Lutheranville Road, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill after a short illness.

Mr. Barry was born June 24, 1936, in Brooklyn, the son of the late Alonzo James Barry, and his mother, who survives him, Doris (Bennett) Barry.

He moved to this area in 1948 from Brooklyn. While living in Brooklyn, Mr. Barry was a Golden Glove Boxer. For many years Mr. Barry worked as a farm hand for the Eklund's dairy farm in Stamford. He retired due to an illness. Mr. Barry was a drummer and singer for several bands, including Ray & The Pioneers, Happy Valley Gang and Center Valley Boys. Along with his music, he enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and was an avid follower.

Mr. Barry was a devoted father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra (Hotaling) Barry, whom he married Nov. 7, 1976; two daughters, Lisa Barry and Renee Barry, both of Cobleskill; three sons, Brad Davis, Timothy Davis and Scott Davis, all of Cobleskill; his mother, Doris (Bennett) Barry of East Worcester; a brother, Larry Barry of Charlotteville; and five granddaughters.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. Friends may call at the funeral home, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery, Summit.

In Mr. Barry's name, memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotteville First Responders, care of the Charlotteville Fire Department, Charlotteville, N.Y. 12036.
