Mildred E. Castle
TREADWELL — Mildred E. Castle, 84, of Treadwell, died Friday evening, Nov. 12, 1999, at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

She was born Aug. 14, 1915, in Big Indian, the daughter of Paul and Ethel (Yeomans) Eignor.

She married Willie R.T. Castle on Sept. 23, 1934. He died on Aug. 13, 1973.

She was a member of the Delhi Alliance Fellowship.

Mildred was a homemaker, and over a period of many years, was a baby sitter for numerous children in Treadwell.

To many, she will be fondly remembered as a grandma. When her health permitted, she was very active in a variety of community activities.

Mildred is survived by her children and their spouses, Kenneth and Arlene Castle of Delhi, Robert and Rachel Castle of Jersey City, N.J., Betty and Dennis Bates of Niskayuna and Ronald Castle of Syracuse; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sons, Donald Castle in 1973 and Willie R. Castle in 1992.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin, with the Rev. Wayne E. Muckel, pastor of the Delhi Alliance Fellowship, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Otego.

Friends may call on Tuesday at the funeral home from 3 to 7 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may made to the Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Adah B. Howe
UNADILLA — Adah B. Howe, 95, of Unadilla, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, after a brief illness.

She was born July 17, 1904, in Unadilla, the daughter of Frank and Myrtle (Denny) Butler.

She married Willard C. Howe on April 30, 1932. They were married for 50 years until his death on March 11, 1983.

Adah graduated from Unadilla Academy in 1921. Then she attended the Albany Business College. She taught school in Unadilla Center and Rockdale in her early years. She also played the piano for the silent movies at the Unadilla and Sidney theaters. She and her husband were owners of Howe Gas Service until 1969, when their son, Richard, purchased the business.

She was a member of the DAR, the Historic Genealogical Society, the New York State Historical Society, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, she was a past matron of the Eastern Star where she received her 75th year pin, a former trustee of the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla, and she was involved in the Red Cross. She was very active in the Republican Party where she served on the Otsego County Committee and was a New York state chairman.

Adah was a remarkable woman and will be sadly missed by all that knew her.

Adah is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jacquelyn Howe of Unadilla; two granddaughters and their spouses, Candace Winchester and Dennis Fisher of Unadilla and Alisa and Robert Scardilli of Old Bridge, N.J.; and five great-grandchildren, Jason, Jessica and Jeremy Winchester of Unadilla and Robert and Nicholas Scardilli of Old Bridge, N.J. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Doris Fahy of Norwich and Bernice Stoddard of Sidney; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Clarence Butler and a grandson, Richard J. Howe.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. Charles F. Gleason officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Isabelle Mattox
GUILFORD — Isabelle Mattox, 87, a longtime Guilford resident, passed away Friday evening, Nov. 12, 1999, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.

Born in Downsville, Isabelle grew up in the Deposit area and attended the Deposit High School. She subsequently attended the Walton Training School for Teachers, and taught school in the Deposit area and in Hamlettville for four years.

A resident of Guilford for more than 50 years, Isabelle had been employed by the Bendix Corp. for 32 years, retiring in 1977. While living in Guilford, and in addition to her job with Bendix, Isabelle helped her husband manage the Mattox Farm campsite area in Guilford for 22 years.

Isabelle loved to camp and enjoyed the outdoors. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the country and Canada, visiting every state in the country and enjoying square dancing every chance they got during their travels.

Isabelle was born on Nov. 12, 1912, the daughter of Elmer and Katheryn (Middaugh) Palmer.

On Oct. 21, 1960, in Oneonta, she married Lloyd A. Mattox, who survives.

Besides her husband, Lloyd, Isabelle is survived by her children and their spouses, Keith DuMond of Bainbridge, Robert and Linda DuMond of Oxford and Elaine and Clifford Becker of Norwich; one stepson, Frederick and Judy Mattox of Saugerties; and one sister, Lorena Humphrey of Camillus. She is also survived by five brothers, Charles E. Palmer of Guilford, Ralph Palmer of Walton, James W. Palmer of Bergen, George Palmer of Unadilla and Albert Palmer of Canastota; eight grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Isabelle was predeceased by her stepson, Steven Mattox; and by her sisters, Abby Holmes and Ruth Foster.

Funeral services for Isabelle will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Romeyn Kipp, pastor of the Holmesville Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Cemetery of Guilford.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Guilford Emergency Squad.

Patricia Mugford
OTEGO — Mrs. Patricia Mugford, 69, died Friday evening, Nov. 12, 1999, at The Hospital in Sidney.

Patricia was born Feb. 1, 1930, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Hickey) Storey.

She married Albert Mugford on Sept. 9, 1950, at Holy Family Church, Brooklyn.

Patricia moved to Otego in 1991, and was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Sidney.

Patricia is survived by her husband of 49 years, Albert Mugford of Otego; four children, Kathy Mugford of Rockville Center, Daniel Mugford of Franklin, James Mugford of Hauppauge, Long Island, and Eileen Mugford of Otego; seven grandchildren, Mike, Marissa, Joey, Erin, Rachel, Brian and Michael; a sister, Margaret Riley of Bargenet, N.J.; and a brother, Robert Storey of Lindenhurst.

A funeral Mass will be offered 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, North Merrick. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn.

The family will receive friends today, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego. The Rev. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Sidney, will conduct a wake service at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Parish, Sidney or the Wells Bridge Fire Department, Wells Bridge.

Eula Strader Rogers
SCHENEVUS — Eula Strader Rogers, 85, of Schenevus, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, unexpectedly, at her home.

She was born Sept. 27, 1914, in Elk Creek. the daughter of Walter and Nina (Palameter) Strader.

Eula is survived by her son, James Rogers of Hilton; stepchildren, Ruth Morse of Herkimer and Charles Rogers of Fort Plain; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and special friend, Walter Ball of Schenevus.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stuart Rogers.

Memorial graveside service will be held at the Elk Creek Cemetery, 11:30 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Rogers to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 272, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Harold C. Wirth
FLEISCHMANNS — Harold C. Wirth, 75, of Fleischmanns, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

He was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Frank Wirth and Minnie Ramm.

He married Roseann Clennan on June 18, 1949, in Union City, N.J.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy 1943-1946.
He worked for Joseph Dixon Crucible Co. in Jersey City for 38 years and as an accountant for Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, N.J., for eight years, until his retirement in 1993, and moved to Fleischmanns.

He was a member of the Jersey City Kiwanis Club, active for many years in the Boy Scouts and serving as scoutmaster for Troop 139 St. Johns, Bergenfield, N.J.

He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville, he served as lector and Eucharist minister.

During the past year he was a member of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital Board of Directors.

He enjoyed skiing at Belleayre Ski Center for 37 years.

Harold is survived by his wife of 50 years, Roseann Wirth of Fleischmanns; three sons, Dennis and Michael Wirth of Paramus, N.J., and Thomas Wirth of Bricktown, N.J.; five grandchildren; and one sister, Sister Francis Gerald of the Caldwell Dominican Order, Jersey City, N.J.

He was predeceased by one brother, Frank Wirth.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. today at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell officiating.

Burial will be held at the George  Washington Memorial Park Cemetery, Paramus, N.J.

Calling hours were held from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville on Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999.

Contributions may be made to the Children's Fund of the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville in memory of Harold C. Wirth.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Dorothy V. Wilson
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Dorothy V. Wilson, 90, of Lake Street, died on Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

Born on Sept. 13, 1909, in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was raised and educated in Ft. Edward.

On Feb. 15, 1926, she married Claude LeRoy Wilson Sr., in Ft. Edward; a loving union of 51 years until his passing on March 2, 1977. Coming from Hudson Falls in 1948, she and her husband at one time had operated a farm. For eight years she worked as a dressmaker for the Richfield Springs Dress Factory, retiring in 1962.

She was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, and at one time she was active with the United Methodist Women of the Schuyler Lake Methodist Church.

She is survived by five sons, Claude Wilson Jr. of Richfield Springs, Harold Wilson and his wife, Betty, of South Glens Falls, Donald Wilson and his wife, Lee, of West Palm Beach, Fla., Raymond Wilson and his wife, Sylvia, of West Winfield and Thomas Wilson and his wife, Helen, of Richfield Springs; one daughter, Joyce and her husband, Leo Zvirzdin, of Richfield Springs; a daughter-in-law, Patsy Wilson of Cooperstown; 19 grandchildren; many great and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Stanley Wilson on Sept. 3, 1984; and a daughter, Jean Earling on Sept. 2, 1994.

Funeral service will be in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs on Wednesday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Tuesday (today), from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Squad. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Lemen C. Fuller
COOKS FALLS — Lemen C. "Pete" Fuller of Cooks Falls, a retired union carpenter and a lifelong area resident died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at his home. He was 75.

The son of the late Clyde and Minnie Elmore Fuller, he was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Cooks Falls.

Pete served our country during World War II in the United States Army.

He was a member of the Hudson Valley District Carpenters Local 120 of Utica; a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 465, Oneonta; American Legion Post, Franklin; Harold Wood VFW Post 5911, Roscoe; past president and member of the Cooks Falls-Horton Fire Company; and a former fire commissioner for the Downsville Fire District.

He was an avid fishermen and hunter.

Survivors include his loving wife, Dorothy E. Specht Fuller, whom he married on Jan. 25, 1947, in the United Church of Roscoe; and several nieces and nephews.

"He was a loving husband and friend who was always willing to help someone."

Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Avenue, Roscoe.

The Cooks Falls-Horton Fire Company will hold services Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. R.L. Donahue will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements were made by the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Avenue, Roscoe.

Donald J. Ardolf
STAMFORD — Donald J. Ardolf, 66, of 10½ South St., Stamford, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 16, 1933, at Silver Lake Village, Minn., the son of Frank and Katherine (Hander) Ardolf.

Don was a United States Army veteran during the Korean War.

For the past 25 years he had resided in Stamford, where he was a self-employed handyman. Don had formerly lived in Florida and Minnesota.

He was a member of the Lt. Harry Pruden Jr. V.F.W. Post in Stamford.

Don is survived by his longtime friend, Evelyn Drake of Stamford; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Ann and Theophil Wendolek of Cokato, Minn., and Germaine and Ted Stycharz of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law, the Rev. Fr. Paul Ardolf of Norwood, Minn., Alfred and Nellie Ardolf of Ledington, Mich., and Robert and Nancy Ardolf of Edina, Minn. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and predeceased by his parents, a sister and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Joseph Cebula, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church, presiding. The burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Stamford.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home at their convenience Wednesday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance Wednesday evening between 7 and 9 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Willie A. Perry
HARPERSFIELD — Willie A. Perry, 57, died suddenly on Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999.

Perry was an area resident for 13 years, having retired, as a detective, from the New York City Police Department.

He was the former president of the Oneonta Chapter of the NAACP, in addition to numerous other memberships and affiliations, making him a most-loved and respected community leader.

He was married and the devoted husband of Delanor (Dee) Dinoto; loving father of Anthony Walker of New York City and Darryle Perry of Brooklyn; and the beloved son of Jaunita Perry of Brooklyn. Perry is also survived by his brother, Eugene Nealy Jr. of Brooklyn; his sisters, Lisa Van Putten of Queens and Charlene Nealy of Brooklyn; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother Tony Nealy; and his sisters Jeanette Rosario, Sandra Nealy and Robin Nealy.

Friends may call at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St. (corner of Liberty), Stamford, Wednesday evening, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at 11 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with a private cremation to follow immediately.

The family requests that contributions may be made in Perry's name to Opportunities for Otsego, 1-800-986-5463, the United Negro College Fund or the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to William A. Tari Funeral Home, Stamford.

Shirley M. King
SIDNEY — Shirley M. King, 92, of 62 West Main St., Sidney, passed away Monday evening, Nov. 15, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Dec. 4, 1906, in Hale Eddy. Shirley was the daughter of the late John and Mary Boice Huyck.

On Nov. 29, 1928, she married Arleigh King in Sidney. He predeceased her on June 8, 1985.

For several years, Shirley was a clerk for the Morris Dry Goods Department Store, Sidney, and for her son at Kings Clothing, Bainbridge and Sidney.

Mrs. King was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, Sidney.

Mrs. King is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Donna King of Bainbridge; her brother, Clyde Huyck of Sidney; five grandchildren and spouses, Sharon and Dan Howard of Dallas,  Texas, JoAnn and Mark Ohl of Hamilton, Amy and Don Tuttel of Masonville, John and Jill King of Cheshire, England, and James and Marie Wallace of Bainbridge; nine great-grandchildren, Jennifer Ohl, Stephen Ohl, Megan Howard, Samantha King, Jordan Tuttel, Jared Tuttel and Adam Neer, Erin Wallace and Andrew King; nephew and wife, Richard and Roberta Huyck of Sidney; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Cameron and Jeanne King of Florida; and sister-in-law, Barbara Mitchell of California. Also, several nieces, nephews and cousins survive.

She was predeceased by her sister, Ola Cowan; and three brothers, Herbert, Furman and Alfred Huyck.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Fraher, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and her niece the Rev. Linda King, of Bainbridge, officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel with her family in attendance.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad or to The Hospital Foundation Fund, Pearl Street, Sidney.
