Frank J. Smith
NORWICH — Frank J. Smith, 77, of Delhi, passed away Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

He was born to the late Frank P. and Florence Vetter Smith on May 11, 1922, in the Bronx.

Mr. Smith married Blanche Poloso on Nov. 7, 1942, in the Bronx.

He served his country during World War II in the United States Army.

Mr. Smith was employed as a carpenter in Nassau County. He retired in 1982.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Blanche M. Smith of Delhi; two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank P. and Maryann Smith of Stonybrook and Ronald J. and Rose Smith of Florida, N.Y.; one sister, Edna Damowicz of Stevensville,  Texas; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, at 11 a.m.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Mark R. Crandall
MASONVILLE — Mark Robert Crandall, 51, of Masonville, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

He was born Jan. 24, 1948, in Norwich, the son of Robert Lyman Crandall and Anna Louise (Lamb) Crandall.

He was married to Elizabeth Hundt in Milford on Sept. 26, 1986.

He was a well-known auctioneer, cattle dealer and cowboy. He was also known as the announcer and an official at the Running Brook Rodeo.

Mark is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Masonville; three sons, William J. Peeters and Thomas Peeters and wife, Connie, of West Winfield and Phillip O. Peeters and wife, Cheryl, of Worcester; one daughter, Linda M. Benjamin and her husband, Paul, of Burlington Flats. His grandchildren include Jolene Peeters, William Peeters, Christopher Peeters, Ryan Peeters, Jessica Peeters, Paul Benjamin and Mitchell Benjamin. He has one great-grandson, Kyle Joseph Peeters. He is also survived by his father-in-law, John Hundt of Westford; a sister-in-law, Marylou Platt and her husband, William, of Westford; a sister, Laurie Rockwell and her husband, David, of Morris; a brother, Jerry Crandall and his wife, Pamela, of Lyons; a stepsister, Jacqueline Nower and her husband, Mark, of Bouckville; a stepfather, Harry Larkin of West Edmeston; his canine companion, Edward; and several nephews, aunts and uncles and one niece.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at 2 p.m., at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain of the Fox Hospital, officiating.

There will be no calling hours and friends are asked to donate to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association, in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Janet Collins
ONEONTA — Janet Collins, 75, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at A.O. Fox Hospital after a lengthy illness.

She was born July 28, 1924, in Cadosia, the daughter of Dominick and Ursula Fucci.

She married Robert S. Collins in July 1946, in Hancock.

She was an assistant manager of the State University College at Oneonta Bookstore having retired in 1963.

She was a lifelong area resident having spent winters in Myrtle Beach, S.C., with her husband, since retirement.

Mrs. Collins was a graduate of SUCO, Class of 1945.

She was a member of Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church of Oneonta and the Oneonta Country Club, where she was an avid golfer and was president of the Nine Hole League. She also enjoyed playing bridge.

Mrs. Collins is survived by her husband at home; a daughter, Mrs. Martin (Maureen) Haviland of Oneonta; a son, Terry, and his wife, Sharon of Ithaca; eight grandchildren, Kelly and Rachel of Oneonta and Kimberly, Jennifer, Megan, Erin, Wendy and Stacia of Ithaca; three great-grandchildren, Andrew, Shelby and Tyler; three sisters, Rose Miller, Anne Dohse and Grace Peaster; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman officiating. Burial will be later in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta, after 3 p.m. Thursday. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening.

Those who wish may make contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Charles Simonson
GRAND GORGE — Charles O. Simonson, 84, of Grand Gorge, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at the Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born Aug. 13, 1915, in Stamford, the son of Marvin Wood Simonson and Eva Joslin.

He married Agnes Benjamin on Nov. 20, 1941, in Grand Gorge.

He operated the family dairy farm for 20 years. After farming he worked on construction for the Hollaway Construction Company and for several years at the Agway stores in  Jefferson, Hobart and Stamford, where he served as assistant manager and manager.

He has lived in Grand Gorge for 30 years.

He was a member of Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, honorary member Grand Gorge Fire Department, and a member of Prattsville Masonic Lodge 630.

During World War II he was active in the Civil Defense program in the area.

He retired in 1978 from security at the New York Power Authority.

Charles is survived by his wife of 58 years, Agnes Simonson of Grand Gorge; one daughter, Ronald and Mary Long of Grand Gorge; one son, George and Eileen Simonson of Middleburgh; three grandchildren, Bill, Julie and Patrick; one brother, Ward Simonson of Gainsville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra, officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Grand Gorge.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Kenneth L. Hall Jr.
UNADILLA — Kenneth L. Hall Jr., 60, of Unadilla, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, in the Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Jan. 30, 1939, in Arena, the son of Kenneth and Nellie (Castle) Hall.

He was a lifelong resident of Unadilla and a former employee of At-A-Glance in Sidney.

Mr. Hall was an active member and leader of the Unadilla Boy Scouts and a member of the Unadilla Fire Department.

Mr. Hall is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Sonia Hall of Bainbridge and Michael and Melanie Hall of Woodbridge, Va.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sharon and Glen Cuttings of Sidney, Cynthia and Toby Thompson of Norwich, and Debra Wheeler of Norwich; also five grandsons; and aunts and uncles.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Fire Department Building Fund.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Donald H. Porath

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Donald H. "Dry Dock" Porath, 89, passed away Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Aug. 4, 1910, in Buel, the son of Frederick and Grace (Moore) Porath. He was educated at the Cherry Valley Central School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a past member of the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department and a life member of the VFW, Cooperstown.

Mr. Porath owned and operated a dairy farm until 1960 and worked after that for the town of Middlefield as a truck driver on the highway department until his retirement in 1975.

Mr. Porath is survived by his companion and lifetime partner, Loretta Moyer of Cooperstown; he was the father of Linda, and her husband, Harold Aitken; grandson, Donald and his wife, Sherry Aitken; granddaughter, Margaret Buel; and four great-grandchildren of Delhi; he was father to Vaughn and Phyllis Crewell of Middleburgh, Samuel F. Crewell of Schoharie, Esther Barton of Fulton, Jacob and Carleta Crewell of Fort Plain, John and Doris Crewell, James and Linda Crewell of Cobleskill, John and Jean Lopez of Schenectady, Joan Moyer of Oneonta and Jim Moyer of Scotia; 37 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Charlotte Flint of Cooperstown and Bertha Baldwin of Cherry Valley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Elsie Smith; and three brothers, Fred, Clarence and Robert Porath.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with Jacob Crewell, minister of Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witness Church, Fort Plain, officiating.

Cremation will follow at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

Burial will be in the Middlefield Cemetery at a later date.

Calling hours will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mr. Porath's memory may be sent to the Middlfield Volunteer Fire Department, Middlefield.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Harry H. Parsons

BAINBRIDGE — Harry H. Parsons, 96, of Bainbridge, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 17 at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born June 23, 1903, to the late Robert Legrand and Emma (Jacobson) Parsons in Bainbridge.

Mr. Parsons was a lifelong Bainbridge resident. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by those close to him.

Mr. Parsons was the oldest parishioner to record at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Bainbridge, where he was very active in his earlier years. He was an employee of American Plastics for many years and retired as a supervisor in 1968.

A talented and accomplished musician, Mr. Parsons played in dance bands and halls across New York and  Pennsylvania. He was also a member and conductor of the Bainbridge Band.

Mr. Parsons had a true passion for the outdoors which included hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is predeceased by his wife Edith A. (Howe) Parsons; three sons, Robert H. Parsons, Renwick N. Parsons and Bernard H. Parsons; four brothers, Martin, Edward, Merrit and Richard Parsons; two granddaughters, Mary Ellen Micheshawn and Barbra Miner; and a great-grandson, Tyler Richard Parsons.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David S. and Lori A. Parsons and Paul S. and Nancy D. Parsons; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews; a brother and sister- in-law Robert and Wilma Parsons; and sister-in-law Lila Parsons.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Bainbridge with the Rev. Linda King, vicar, officiating.

Friends may call Friday, Nov. 19, from 7-9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Parsons name to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

John A. Lamb

COOPERSTOWN — John A. Lamb, 62, of Cooperstown, died Thursday evening, Nov. 18, at his home.

He was born on Oct. 16, 1937, in Cooperstown, a son of Eldred J. and Beatrice (Pratt) Lamb.

He married Donna Misner on Jan. 27, 1977, in Fly Creek.

John was raised in Cooperstown and attended Cooperstown Central School. He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 5, 1959, transferring to the Reserves on Feb. 12, 1962, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 31, 1965.

In 1962, John became an ambulance driver at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown and served with the security department from 1967 until 1979. He then joined the Clark Estates and was employed at Grasslands until 1984. He was most recently employed at the Otsego County Correctional Facility in Phoenix Mills as a shift sergeant of corrections. For 19 years, John served as a bus driver for Cooperstown Central School.

An avid motorcycle enthusiast, John was a member of the Oneonta Branch of the Hudson Highlands Retreads and the American Motorcycle Association. He was also a former member and past chief of the Hartwick Seminary Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Fly Creek Volunteer Fire Department. John also was an honorary member of the Hartwick Seminary Volunteer Fire Department.

John is survived by his wife of 22 years, Donna L. Lamb of Cooperstown; three daughters, Renee J. Lamb of Mastic, Long Island, Jeanette J. Lamb of Ballston Spa and Jaclyn J. Lamb of Okeechobee, Fla.; one son, John A. Lamb II of Okeechobee, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Terry Mestyanek of Schenectady and Cindy Misner of Milwaukee, Wis.; six grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Crowley and her husband, Robert, of Turnersville, N.J.; three brothers, Lowell I. Lamb of Florida, Theodore E. Lamb and his wife, Cecilia, and Larry J. Lamb and his wife, Lillian, all of Cooperstown; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Judith L. Quarles, pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Society in Oneonta, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2 p.m. until service time, when John's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

John J. Russell

ONEONTA — John J. Russell, 82, of Oneonta, passed away Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at his residence following a brief illness.

John was born in Brooklyn on July 9, 1917, the son of John and Lillian (Neary) Russell.

He received his education in Hancock. John served in the 9th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army in Africa, Sicily and other parts of Europe during World War II.

John was first married to Marjorie Chandler of Hancock on July 8, 1946. She predeceased him on Nov. 24, 1955. He then married Lucy Giudice of Oneonta on Oct. 13, 1957. Lucy predeceased him on Dec. 30, 1982. On Sept. 6, 1992, John married Frances Sandoli of Oneonta.

John worked in retail and commercial milk delivery in Oneonta from 1946 until his retirement in 1984.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church and its Young at Heart Club, the Italian American Club and the Jericho Arts Association.

John was an avid artist and enjoyed the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Russell of Oneonta; a son, Gary Russell and his wife, Patricia, of Whitesboro; his daughters, Jeannine J. Russell of Poughkeepsie, Patricia J. Russell of Oneonta, Eileen Russell of Maryland and Elaine Russell of Port Ritchey, Fla.; his brothers, Francis and Daniel Russell of Brooklyn; and a sister, Lillian Rhinebeck, of Long Eddy.

He is also survived by four grandsons, Jonathan C. Russell of Boston, Mass., Dr. Stephen Russell of New York City, Albie Fowler IV of Oneonta and Darrell Scott of Port Ritchey, Fla.; a granddaughter, Allison Styliadis of Manchester; and his great-granddaughter, Alexa Styliadis.

He was predeceased by a brother and a sister, Joseph Russell and Emma Russell of Brooklyn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at 9 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Rock Valley Cemetery, Rock Valley.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, from 2-5 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or St. Mary's School Building Fund.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Alta H. Bickford

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Alta H. Bickford, 88, died at the IHS of Port Charlotte, Fla., Nursing Home on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999.

She was born Alta Louise Harrison, Aug. 30, 1911, in Oneonta and was a longtime resident of Masonville, West Bainbridge (Union Valley), and North Port, Fla.

She is predeceased by her first husband, Chester H. Davis; her brother, Howard Harrison; two sisters, Edna Hatton and Agnes Senuk Lamar; and her husband, Bethel Bickford, who died in 1997.

Alta is survived by a son, Charles Davis of Sidney; a daughter, Louise Pittaway of Stonington, Conn.; a stepson, Darwin Bickford; and stepdaughters, Bettye Haugh of Norwich and Virginia Chew of Dunedin, Fla. She is also survived by a grandson and a great-grandson, Jeffrey and Austin Davis of McKinney,  Texas; a granddaughter, Sandra Britz of Austin,  Texas; and several nieces, nephews, stepnieces and stepnephews, etc.

Alta attended schools in East Masonville and Walton High School, graduating with honors.

She worked throughout high school and almost constantly until retirement.

She and her first husband, Chester (Chet) Davis, lived four short years in Ashland and Basking Ridge, N.J. where he died in 1935. At that time she had a son, and a daughter on the way.

Following Chet's death and the birth of her daughter in Sidney, she eventually returned to Masonville and remained on the family farm while she worked many years for Scintilla Division of Bendix Corp. from which she retired as a senior inspector in 1973.

Alta belonged to Masonville Federated Church, Masonville Grange, 4-H, and the Eastern Star.

Married to Bethel Bickford in 1966, she moved to his home in Union Valley (West Bainbridge), living there until after their retirement, then moving to North Port, Fla. and remaining there until his death in 1997.

Alta was a hard-working and very caring woman, always putting others before herself, and was very appreciative of family and friendships. Written communication with many friends and relatives was her primary hobby. She had a quiet sense of humor, often finding it when chips were down. She was a good mentor and excellent example for living, and will be sorely missed by friends, neighbors and family.

There will be a memorial service for her at the Masonville Federated Church on Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at 1 p.m. Friends are welcome. Light refreshments to follow.
