Memorial services have been set for Harry E. "Ed" Duso, Jr., 80, of Saranac Lake and Bradenton, Fla., who died peacefully with his wife Jeanne at his side, Thursday October 27, 2005 at his home in Florida. Born on July 26, 1925 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of Harry E. and Sylvia (Kimball) Duso. He married the former Jeanne B. Gladd. Ed was a veteran of Word War II, serving in the United States Army, and was a member of the 11th Airborne Division. He was a member and past Chief of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the American Legion Post 447 of Saranac Lake and a member of the Moose Lodge 1223 of Bradenton, Fla. He spent most of his life working for his family-owned business at Duso's Sales and Service and Crescent Bay Marina on Lower Saranac Lake. He is survived by his wife of 55 years; a son Craig and his wife Vicki of Myrtle Beach, SC; a daughter Theresa A. LeBaron of Saranac Lake; six grandchildren: Todd Chapman of San Francisco,  Calif., Carrie Chapman of Las Vegas, Nevada; Matthew Duso of Myrtle Beach, SC; Noah LeBaron of Minot, ND; Abby LeBaron of Seattle,  Washington and Sarah LeBaron of Great Lakes, Ill; and one brother Donald Duso of Saranac Lake. He was predeceased by his parents and one son Tad E. Duso. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Saturday June 10, 2006 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A fireman's prayer service, Veterans Service and a memorial service will immediately follow at 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery. Shirley Frandsen Swain, age 83, of 23 Birch Knoll Drive, Saranac Lake, died Friday, May 26, 2006 at the Uihlein Mercy Center Nursing Home in Lake Placid, NY where she had been a resident since April. Born in Racine, Wisconsin on September 15, 1922, she was the daughter of Harold A. and Edna (Laper) Frandsen. She attended University of Wisconsin, Madison where she met and married Robert Swain, Ph.D. in 1944. They lived in New Platz, NY and then moved to Highland Park, NJ. Robert a Professor of Mathematics, predeceased her in 1962. Thereafter, Mrs. Swain received her BA from Douglas College of Rutgers University and was a Social worker in New Brunswick, Jersey and in San Diego California until moving to Saranac Lake in 1996. In Saranac Lake she volunteered at the Lunch Box and Budget Box. She was preceded in death by her father and mother and by her daughter Judith Swain. She is survived by her daughter Susan, of Saranac Lake, her sister Janice Matson of Racine, Wisconsin her grandchildren Lisa and Nicholas Dutton-Swain of Saranac Lake, and Kenyon Swain Foxworthy of Seattle,  Washington, her nephews Kevin, Michael and Stephen Matson, and her sons-in-law Richard Dutton of Saranac Lake and Robert Foxworthy of Seattle. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A memorial service will take place at 12:00 PM on Saturday June 3, 2006 at the funeral home with Rev. Rick Dennis officiating. Following cremation, interment will be in Truro, Massachusetts on Cape Code in the summer.

Esther McDonald, age 93, of 430 Old Lake Colby Road, Saranac Lake, died Sunday, May 28, 2006 at her home. Born in Lake Clear, New York on September 28, 1912, she was the daughter of Joseph and Cora (Rawlins) McMaster. She married Thomas A. McDonald on September 14, 1946 in First United Methodist Church in Saranac Lake. He predeceased her on April 16, 1992. Mrs. McDonald was a life long resident of the Saranac Lake area. She had been employed as a teacher for the Saranac Lake Central School District for 40 years until her retirement in 1972. Following her retirement she had individually tutored children. Mrs. McDonald was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church in Saranac Lake, the Eastern Star and the Pomono Grange. She was an avid bowler and gardener. She is survived by two sons Richard and his wife Donna of Saranac Lake, NY and John and his wife Wanda of Lake Clear, NY; two grandchildren, Jeffrey McDonald who is currently serving in the Armed Services in Iraq and Ashley McDonald of Fort Collins, CO. She is also survived by several cousin and a close friend of the family Wayne Lanphear. Her father and mother, her brother John "Jack" McMaster, and her grandson Rick Voudren preceded her in death. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 from 2PM -4PM and 7PM - 9PM. Doris Moody Cook, age 82, of Lake Clear, died Friday, May 19, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born in Lake Clear, New York on May 11, 1924, she was the daughter of Charles and Cora (Pearson) Donaldson. Doris worked at the Hotel Saranac as a housekeeper and later worked at the Lake Clear Trading Post as a butcher for her brother George Donaldson. Doris enjoyed cooking, especially pickling. She also enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. She is survived by her husband Clarence "Lucky" Cook of Lake Clear, four sons: Mace Moody Jr. and wife Carolyn of Lake Clear, Diane Moody of Saranac Lake, Reginald Moody and his wife Barbara of Lake Clear and Sandra Vandenburgh and husband Jay "Zeke" of Lake Clear, nine grandchildren, ninteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren and a daughter-in-law: Susan Moody of Lake Clear. She was preceded in death by her father Charles Donaldson, her mother Cora Pearson, her first husband Mace Moody Sr., a son: Charles Moody and five sisters and five brothers. A private funeral service will be held at the Fortune - Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake with Reverend Clifford Davis, pastor of the Lake Clear Presbyterian Church, officiating. Alfred G. Moody, age 83, of 20 Crossfield Ave., Saranac Lake, died Sunday, May 21, 2006 at Uihlein Mercy Center, Lake Placid, NY. Born in Saranac Lake, New York on February 15, 1923, he was the son of William Henry and Rose (Facto) Moody. He was the great-great-grandson of Jacob Moody, one of the first settlers of Saranac Lake. Al was a life long resident of Saranac Lake and was a veteran of WWII, proudly serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1944-1945 in Guam. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending lots of time at his camp on Miller Pond. He also loved and enjoyed caring for the family dog, Ruby. He worked for the New York State Department of Corrections as an Industrial Training Supervisor, retiring in 1983. He is survived by his wife: the former Rita Corinne Woodruff, whom he married September 22, 1942, two sons: Rodney Moody and his wife Donna of Chazy Lake, NY, Al Moody and his wife Mary Lou of Saranac Lake, seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, a son-in-law: Richard McCormick of Saranac Lake, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father William Henry Moody, his mother Rose Facto Moody, his daughter Donna (Moody) McCormick, his sister Isabel Porter and his brothers William, Henry and Ross Moody. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 from 7-9PM. A Bible Vigil will be held Tuesday at 8:30PM. Robert W. Walasky, age 54, of 234 Lake Flower Ave., Saranac Lake, died Thursday, May 18, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born in Malone, New York on April 5, 1952, he was the son of William Walasky and step-son of Harriet (VonDell) Walasky. Robert grew up in Malone and Saranac Lake and in 1974 he went to work at the Lake Placid Club. He later worked at the family Restaurant, the Red Fox in Saranac Lake, until 1998 when he and his wife purchased the Lake Flower Inn in Saranac Lake. He was a member of the Saranac Lake Golf Club and enjoyed boating on the various local lakes. He also played the drums in a number of bands. He is survived by his wife: the former Kimberly Kirwan, whom he married November 4, 1978, two daughters: Kristen L. Walasky of Phoenix, AZ and Shannon M. Walasky of Saranac Lake, his father William J. Walasky of Saranac Lake, a sister: Susan Dwyer and her husband Dennis of Saranac Lake and a nephew: Dennis Dwyer III of Saranac Lake. He was preceded in death by his step-mother: Harriet VonDell Walasky. A Memorial Mass will take place Saturday, May 21, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Bernard's Church., with Father Jeffrey Hubbard officiating. George F. Strack, age 65, of 16 Strack Rd., Lake Clear, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born in Saranac Lake, New York on January 25, 1941, he was the son of James and Helen (Minnie) Strack. George was a life-long resident of the area and worked as a laborer for Clifford Donaldson, and worked at the Goddard Camp. He later went to work for the Town of Harrietstown for over 20 years, retiring in 1997. He liked playing cards, card parties, he loved fishing, walking, going to the post office and to the store for ice cream. He loved his family and was always concerned about them. He was known to many as the "mayor of Lake Clear". He is survived by six brothers and two sisters: Gerald Strack of Lake Clear, Wesley Strack of Lake Placid, Edward Strack and wife Janet of Phoenix, AZ, Thomas Strack and wife JoAnn of Rainbow Lake, Richard Strack and wife Marie of Wappingers Falls, Eugene Strack and wife Holly of Lake Clear, Mya Duprey of Lake Clear and Dawn Boula and husband Andrew of Bloomingdale, many nieces and nephews and cousins, an aunt: Marguerite Reyome of Saranac Lake and an aunt and uncle: Archie and Kathy Strack of Saranac Lake. He was preceded in death by his father James Strack, and his mother Helen Minnie Strack. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Sunday, May 21, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9PM. Elwin P. Jenness, age 81, of Long Lake, New York, died Monday, May 15, 2006 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. He was currently living with his daughter Sheryl and her family in Saranac Lake. Born in Glover, Vermont on September 21, 1924, he was the son of George and Nellie (Scott) Jenness. Elwin, married Evelyn M. Russell September 26, 1948 in Long Lake, New York. She predeceased him on October 1, 1993. Mr. Jenness is a veteran of the United States Navy serving from 1943 to 1946 on the USS Endicott; serving in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Mediterranean Sea. He came to New York from Vermont with the US Bobbin Company and then worked building the dams along the Raquette River for the Raquette River Construction Company. He was a resident of Long Lake for over 58 years. He worked for 40 years for the Torrington Construction Company before retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Mount Sabattis Masonic Lodge for 53 years and past Master of the Lodge and Past Grand District Deputy. He was one of the founding members and past president of the Moonlighters Snowmobile Club. He and his sister Dorothy worked each year at the snowmobile races. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and in later years cooking and baking pies for his family. He is survived by four children Jeff Jenness and his wife Lori of Dekalb Jct., NY; Sylvia Kelly and her husband Chris of Terryville, CT; James Jenness of San Antonio, TX, and Sheryl Madden and her husband Michael of Saranac Lake, NY; one sister Dorothy Parmelee and her husband Sam of Tupper Lake, NY; two brothers Ken Jenness and his wife Ruby of Morgan, VT, and Walter Jenness and his wife Joyce of Derby, VT; 8 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren, and one step great grandchild. He is also survived by five sister-in-laws and two brother-in-laws Shirley Todd of Torrington, CT; Edith Russell of Syracuse, NY; Thelma and Jose Barros of
Houston, TX; Beverly Stenglein of Long Lake, NY; and Farrand & Marie Russell of Altamont, NY. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; three brothers Richard, Harold "Pete", and Ray Jenness; one sister Irene Connelly,one sister-in-law Lynette Russell; and two brother-in-laws Eldridge and Arthur Russell. Calling hours will take place at Fortune-Keough-Rennell Funeral Home on Friday, May 19, 2006 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A Masonic Service will take place Friday evening at 7:00 PM at the Funeral Home. Roswell (Roddy) Allan Stearns passed away at Uihlein Mercy Center on May 13, 2006, one week shy of his 83rd birthday. He had lived most of his life in Saranac Lake and was a resident of Uihlein since January after a serious fall. Roddy was born in Saranac Lake on May 19, 1923, the son of Leon and Dorothy Stearns. He was predeceased by his wife, Thirza (Bickford) Stearns, who died on October 25, 2005, after 55 years of marriage, and his brothers Francis (Frank) Stearns and Walter Stearns. Roddy was a veteran of World War 2, proudly serving in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific arena. Until his retirement he was a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office. During his retirement he had a small bicycle repair shop. Roddy loved his Saranac Lake Redskins and was an avid follower of their football team, going to every hometown game for both the JV and Varsity. He also had a passion for garage sales and could often be found on weekends traversing from place to place for that “special” find. He is survived by his daughter Joan Billus and her husband Zigmont of Queensbury, NY; grandson, Eric Pettit and his wife, Jane, of Staten Island, NY; granddaughter Erin Adams and her husband George and their children, Stephen, Marissa and Ashley of Guilderland, NY; his sisters Janice Gauthier of Saranac Lake, Beverly Townley of Florida and Eileen Harding of New Jersey, and many nieces and nephews. At his request there will be no commemorative service. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Henry Howard Trotter, age 55, of 64 Beechwood Road, Saranac Lake, died Monday, May 8, 2006 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born in the Bronx, New York on October 15, 1950, he was the son of David and Lee (Weiner) Trotter. Henry graduated from North Country Community College in 1972. He was a bartender in the area for eight years. From 1980 to 2000 he was a bartender and later bar manager at the Hilton in Lake Placid. It had always been Henry's dream to own his own business, this dream was realized when he opened the Sears store in Saranac Lake in the year 2000. He also owned two apartment buildings. He was a member of the Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club, and enjoyed target shooting with an assortment of guns. Trains were a fascination for Henry and he has a large collection of Lionel Trains. Henry had been a boyscout reaching the rank of Life, and enjoyed hiking, boating and riding his motorcycle. He loved animals, especially his dog Cooper and his cat Mac. He is survived by his wife, the former Marcia Robinson, whom he married June 23, 1979, two sons: Joel Trotter and Brian Trotter all of Saranac Lake, a brother: Nathan Trotter of Woodmere, Long Island, NY, three nephews: Kevin Trotter, Mark Trotter and Michael Corbett, four nieces: Colleen Corbett, Beth Cane, Jill Robinson and Meghan Robinson. He was preceded in death by his father David Trotter, and his mother Lee Weiner. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake on Thursday, May 11, 2006 from 2PM -4PM and 7PM - 9PM.. David E. Benham 78, of 30 Van Buren Street, Saranac Lake died at home after a brave struggle with ALS. His beloved wife, Ruth of 57 years and his family were at his side. Dave was born in Stanfordville, NY on February 3, 1927 to Stanley and Mildred Benham. He grew up on a farm there. Dave was an incredible man. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and never raised his voice in anger. Dave could always find something good about a person or situation. He had a delightful sense of humor. Everyone who knew him appreciated his sense of humor and gentle way of looking at life. Dave moved to the Saranac Lake area in 1980. He had many wonderful experiences here. Dave worked in the food service during 1980 Olympics. He was instrumental in running the Depot for the Historical society. He appreciated older homes and all the character they have to offer. Because Dave grew up and worked on a farm he could do a little of everything. He was a plumber, a gardener, an electrician, a painter, and a carpenter. Dave was a problem solver. He restored old furniture and was famous for his caning. Dave had a wicked sweet tooth and never tasted a cookie he didn't like. He left the cooking to his wife, Ruth. One of his fondest adventures was taking fishing trip in Canada with friends and family. In reviewing those trips recently he realized that he had taken 62 trips there. He has always been a great storyteller and loved to laugh about all the great fishing memories. Dave was an avid golfer and could often be found at the Ray Brook Golf Course on a sunny day. He was able to golf there with his son and grand children through the end of the 2005 season. He taught himself to play at the age of 70. David is survived by his wife Ruth Helen, a son Larry and his wife Mary Kay Benham of Saranac Lake, a daughter Linda and her husband Michael Tarantelli of Saranac Lake and a daughter Rebecca Reyes. He has been blessed with 7 wonderful grandchildren who loved him very much: Jessica and Matthew Cook, Max and Dana Tarantelli, Megan and David Benham and Maria Reyes. He is also survived by his sister Ginny Augerson, and two brothers Stanley Benham, and Sidney Benham all of Millbrook, NY. A sister, Mary Lou Murphy, predeceased him. Although his disease took his strength and co-ordination Dave’s mind and sense of humor were clear and strong until the end. He was able to communicate through writing. He thanks all those who visited. He truly enjoyed his many friendships. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, Inc. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family. In Lieu of flowers friends may make memorial contributions to the ALS Research Association or High Peaks Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Mary C. Keating, age 84, of 45 Willow Way, Saranac Lake, died Friday, May 05, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born in Woodside, New York on December 21, 1921, she was the daughter of James and Mary (Campbell) Reilly. Mrs. Keating had been a resident of Saranac Lake for the past 11 years, and was a member of the Sunshine Club, Catholic Daughters of America and was a very active member and volunteer at the Saranac Lake Adult Center where she was assistant editor of the Senior Outlook newspaper. She enjoyed reading. Mary's favorite times were spent with her family. She is survived by her husband James Keating, two sons Don Wille of Smithtown, NY and Charles Wille of Chazy Lake, NY, two daughters Alice Sparacia of Lake Placid, NY and Barbara Blando of Saranac Lake, NY, a sister Margaret Fleming of Saranac Lake, and seven grandchildren Frankie, Tracie, Kim, Christopher, Charlie, Mary and Don. Mary was predeceased in 1980 by her first husband of 41 years, Charles A. Wille. A Memorial Mass will take place Saturday, May 6, 2006 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Bernard's Church., with Fr. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Saranac Lake Adult Center in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home 20 Church Street, Saranac Lake.

H. M. Dukett, 90, of Saranac Lake, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2006 at his home. Born January 9, 1916 in Keene, NY, he was the son of H. Sylvester and Edith (Collins) Dukett and a lifelong resident of the Adirondacks. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army where he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action during the Battle of the Bulge. In 1950 he graduated from St. Lawrence State Hospital School of Nursing, then immediately began his 31 years of employment as a registered nurse at Sunmount in Tupper Lake. Mr. Dukett was a member and senior warden of the Church of St. Luke. His pastimes and hobbies included boating, fishing, camping and photography. One of his greatest accomplishments was building the family home that served as their residence for 60 years. He was predeceased by a daughter, Evelyn Nancy, in 1956. Mr. Dukett is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Lucy Wilson Dukett; three daughters and their spouses: the Rev. Royal and Patricia Mattoon of Westminster, Md., Michael and Denise Caselli of Hudson Falls, and the Rev. David and Michele Boyea of Tupper Lake; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters: G. Louise Gardner of Saranac Lake and Audrey G. Cochran of Massena; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Saranac Lake, NY from 2-4 and 7-9 Wednesday. The funeral service will take place Thursday at 11AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at North Elba Cemetery in Lake Placid. Jerold Nelson Hope, age 65, known to some as Jerry and others as Rocky, of 7 Broadway, Saranac Lake, New York, died on Friday June 30, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, NY. Born November 1 4, 1940 in Belhaven, NC to John N. Hope and Rachel (Curtis) Hope. He married Roberta Wilt in May 1962, and later divorced. Mr. Hope served in the United Stated Marine Corps and was stationed in Vietnam from August 1966 to November 1968. He married Nancy Wilt in 1989 and later divorced. Mr. Hope was a retired truck driver and had been employed by various trucking companies over the years. He enjoyed making crafts by hand and he liked the oldies. Mr. Hope leaves behind five children: John Hope and his wife Becky, Edward Wilt and his wife Holly, and Lary Wilt of Franklin, NC. Michell Vinson and her husband Shane of Hayesville, NC; Michael Hope and his wife Brandy of Saranac Lake, NY; 13 grandchildren- Joseph, Kevin, and Travis Hope of Franklin, NC; James, Christian, Sarah, and Jaden Wilt of Franklin, NC. Quaid, Cecil, and Briony Wilt of Hayesville, NC. Tevin, Miranda, and Joshua Hope of Saranac Lake, NY. His longtime companion Joan Corrow, of Saranac Lake, NY. He also has 1 great grandchild on the way. His parents, one son, Joe Hope, and one grandson, Byron Hope, predeceased him. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours. Following cremation a graveside service will take place in  Washington, N.C. Friends wishing to remember Mr. Hope may make memorial contributions to the High Peaks Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Charles "Charlie" A. Robinson, age 52, of 73 School Street, Saranac Lake, died Thursday, June 29, 2006 at Adirondack Medical Center. Born in Buffalo, New York on August 31, 1953, he was the son of Alan and Ruth (Harris) Robinson. Charlie had been a resident of the School Street ARC home since 1997. He
enjoyed singing and music. He especially like the band the "Doors". Charlie likes rocking in his recliner and making people laugh, flirt with the women. He is survived by his many close friends and the staff at the School Street ARC. He was preceded in death by his father Alan Robinson, and his mother Ruth Harris Robinson. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Saturday, July 1, 2006 from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM.. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake. Friends wishing to remember Charles " Charlie" A. Robinson may make memorial contributions to Adirondack Medical Center Dialysis Unit in care of the funeral home.
