Eugene 'Bud' Chase

DELHI — Eugene "Bud" Chase, 71, of Delhi died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Nov. 30, 1927, in Hobart, the son of Eugene and Mabel (Hanson) Chase.

Surviving are two children, Sharon Chase of Gainesville, Fla., and Lawrence Chase of Buford, S.C.; five stepchildren, Marlene McFarlane of  Pennsylvania, Raymond McNaughton of Rochester, Kenneth McNaughton of Sidney, Richard Aikens of Delhi, Ray Aikens of Otego; a sister, Alice (Sally) Waring of Delhi; and two brothers, Amos Chase of Bainbridge and Edwin Chase of Temple,  Texas; and a special friend and companion, Edna Kelly of Delhi; as well as seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Willard Chase and Lester Chase, predeceased him.

Bud was a graduate of Andes Central School. He retired from Amphenol Corp. in Sidney as a machinist and inspector and owned and operated the E&B Tavern in Meredith for many years.

Calling hours will take place this evening from 7 to 9 at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Benjamin Gregory

SOUTH PLYMOUTH — Benjamin A. Gregory, 29, of Center Road, South Plymouth, passed away unexpectedly early Saturday morning, Nov. 20, 1999, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

Ben was a loving, devoted and wonderful husband, dad, son and brother who always found time to enjoy being with his family. A bit mischievous at times and famous for his storytelling, he believed in living life to the fullest. He was proficient at wheeling and dealing, always making a profit.

Ben had attended the Sherburne-Earlville Central School. Known as a hard worker, Ben had held jobs since the age of 16. He started as a dishwasher at Ossie's Restaurant and worked his way up to cooking. Even at the time of his death, he was still working part-time for Ossie's while holding down a full-time job as a loader/operator for Chenango Asphalt in Norwich. He had worked there for the past seven years. In addition, Ben enjoyed small engine repair, welding and repair work on heavy machinery, and snowmobiling.

Born March 18, 1970, in Norwich, Ben was the son of David Gregory and Anna Marie Brazee Gregory Plata.

On Sept. 2, 1989, in McDonough, he married Arramae Barry, who survives. Besides his wife Arramae, Ben is survived by his children, Dustin, Benjamin and Marrisa, all of South Plymouth; his father and stepmother, David and Janice Gregory of Sherburne; and his sister, Marsha M. Gregory of Sherburne. He is also survived by his stepsister, Nicole Plata of Duluth, Minn.; his stepbrother, Christian Plata of Cortland; his stepfather, Tom Plata of Norwich; his grandmothers, Gladys Gregory of New Berlin and Joyce Brazee of New Berlin; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Kay and Pete Barry of Afton and Norwich; and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Martin and Rhonda Barry of Norwich, James and Cindy Barry of McDonough, and Travis Barry of Binghamton. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. Not to be forgotten are Ben's many special and close friends throughout the area.

Ben was predeceased by his mother, Anna Marie Plata, and by his grandfathers, Ralph Brazee and Brittain C. Gregory.

Funeral services for Ben will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roger Pancost, pastor of the United Church of Christ of Sherburne, officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery of New Berlin. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

A trust fund is being established for Ben's children. Anyone wishing to make a contribution, in lieu of flowers, may get the address at the funeral home or from Tuesday's Daily Star.

Gertrude McIntyre

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Gertrude A. McIntyre, 80, died unexpectedly from a heart attack on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on May 28, 1919, in Ozone Park, Long Island, the daughter of the late Richard Emil and Anna Thom Miller.

On July 15, 1937, she married Norman McIntyre, who died on April 16, 1982. Their son, Kenneth, died on May 5, 1988, at the age of 49.

Prior to their move to Richfield Springs in 1981, she was employed as a secretary in Pilgrim State Hospital, Islip, Long Island. Until her death, she was active in several senior citizens groups in the area.

Throughout her life she gave generously of her time and talent to others. She was extraordinarily accomplished in needlework as well as other arts and crafts. There are many friends and family who have been blessed by the gifts of her hard work and skill.

Surviving are two sisters, Frieda Pagnoni of Old Saybrook, Conn. and Caroline Kessel of Tilghman, Md.; a brother, Walter Miller of Huntington, Long Island; many nieces, nephews and their families.

A memorial service will be held in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs at a later date to be announced.

There are no calling hours.

J. Louise Mitchell

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — J. Louise Hagstrom Mitchell died Oct. 17, 1999, in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

She was born June 25, 1921, in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of Alpha and Jules Hagstrom

A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at 1 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles  Taylor of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin, officiating. Interment will be in St. Andrew's Cemetery, New Berlin.

Funeral arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Thelma Lois Mudge

GRAND GORGE — Thelma Lois Mudge, 79, of Grand Gorge died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at the O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born July 12, 1920, in Welcome, the daughter of Chauncey A. Yager and Laura May Thorpe

Thelma worked as a cook and waitress at Streeters Diner in Grand Gorge for several years and later worked at Taits Colonial Motel in Grand Gorge.

She was a great letter writer to her family and kept a journal of many events that happened in her life. She was always taking children to programs that were taking place in the community. Gardening and taking care of pets was something she enjoyed.

She has been a lifelong area resident.

Thelma is survived by five grandchildren, Deborah Burroughs, John Mudge, Dean Brainard, Lisa Faraci and Denise Moore; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gertrude Washburn, Doris Yager and Martha Thresher; one brother, Chauncey Yager; and several nieces and nephews including Albert Mudge, Margaret Averill, Phylis House, Richard Washburn and Bill Washburn.

She was predeceased by two sons, Carl T. Mudge and Chester M. Mudge.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Robert Nash officiating. Burial will be held in the Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Calling hours will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Arrangements are with the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Gladys Neff

WALTON — Gladys Neff, 95, a resident of RD 1 Box 203 (Route 10S), Walton, died peacefully Saturday morning, Nov. 20, 1999, at her home.

She was born on Feb. 3, 1904, in Walton to James and Edna (Gould) Goodrich.

She then married Alfred Neff, who predeceased her in 1977.

She was an employee of S.J. Bailey & Sons in Walton, a homemaker and a dairy farmer on the family farm.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Neff, in 1977, and a son, Leland Neff, on Dec. 19, 1996.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Marion L. Reed of Holmesville; a granddaughter, Eileen Lawyer of Holmesville; a grandson, James Reed of Waterville; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at 2 p.m. in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to: Walton Emergency Squad, care of Grace Cornell, West Street, Walton, N.Y. 13856.

Arrangements are by the Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, N.Y. 13856, 865-5114.

Thomas A. Olsen

TREADWELL — Thomas A. Olsen, 89, of Treadwell died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at his residence.

He was born on March 9, 1910, in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Thomas and Anna (Hansen) Olsen.

He married Dorothy L. Russell on July 4, 1965. She died on Nov. 4, 1995.

For a period of 44 years, retiring in 1976, Tom was employed by Western Electric in New York City.

An area resident for the past 25 years, he was a very active member of the Susquehanna Valley Baptist Church. Tom had varied interests, but especially enjoyed flying, skiing, woodworking and gardening, He was also noted for building all of his own homes from scratch.

Thomas is survived by his children and their spouses, Bob and Liz Olsen of Cleveland, Ohio, James and Diana Olsen of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Carol and Anthony Marchitelli of Ringwood, N.J.; his stepchildren and their spouses, Herb and Jan Speer of Kensington, Conn. and Elayne and Marty Olsen of South Bristol, Maine; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Martin Olsen of Spring Hill, Fla.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the Susquehanna Valley Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bruce McCardel and the Rev. Keith Marlett officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Richard K. Rose

LAURENS — Richard K. Rose, 70, of Laurens died Friday evening, Nov. 19, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

Dick was born Feb. 16, 1929, in Walton, the son of Leslie and Ethel (Kidder) Rose.

On May 2, 1948, he married Beatrice Place in Laurens.

Dick was a 1948 graduate of Laurens Central School. He was a lifelong resident of Laurens. He had served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Dick was a member and past commander of the Laurens American Legion Post #1688. He was the town of Laurens historian and was the president of the Laurens Cemetery Association for many years until his death.

Dick will be greatly missed.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Beatrice Rose of Laurens; one son, Douglas Rose of Laurens; one daughter, Rena Rose of Laurens; three granddaughters, Sara, Tyler and Billi, all of Laurens; one great-grandson, Stephan, of Laurens; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gerald and Virginia Place of Laurens; one nephew and his wife, Larry and Loretta Place of Norwich; three grandnephews, Mark, Craig and Thomas; also one niece, Leslie Schult and her husband, and their children; and one nephew, Skip Luberto and his wife, and their children.

Dick will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris.

Graveside memorial services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Laurens Cemetery, with the Rev. Harry G. Myers officiating. A Military Honor service will be conducted by the Laurens American Legion Post #1688.

At the request of Dick, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the Laurens Emergency Squad, Laurens, N.Y. 13796 or to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Richard K. Rose.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Gustav Tafel

EDMESTON — Gustav Tafel, 84, of Edmeston died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at his home in Edmeston with his family by his side.

He was born Sept. 8, 1915, in Krummendorf, Germany, the son of Gustav and Marie (Bahl) Tafel.

He married Gerda E. Will on Dec. 10, 1948, in Nusse, Germany.

Gustav operated the family dairy farm on State Highway 80.

He had a strong love for his family, and for all of his animals. He truly looked forward every morning to their daily feeding and greetings.

He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in West Burlington.

Gustav will be remembered by many of the local residents for his daily jaunt across the road to the barn with his milk pail.

Gustav is survived by his wife, Gerda, of 50 years; his children and their spouses, Barbara and Matthew Barra, Dieter and Marieanne Tafel; six grandchildren, Allison and Michel Barra, Heidi, Lucas, Adam, and Gustav Tafel; and five nieces, who reside in Germany.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the St. John's Lutheran Church in West Burlington, with Vicar Beverly Banay officiating. Burial will follow at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gustav's memory to either the Edmeston Emergency Squad, Catskill Area Hospice, or St. John's Lutheran Church.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Glenn B. Keeler

SIDNEY — Mr. Glenn B. Keeler, 94, of the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney and formerly of 12 Averil St., Otego, died Sunday morning, Nov. 21, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born March 2, 1905, in Lone Tree, Iowa, the son of Amos B. and Ada (Magee) Keeler.

On Aug. 5, 1972, Glenn married Frances M. Hymers in California. Mrs. Keeler died March 22, 1998.

Glenn retired in the 1960s from EIS Automotive as a salesperson for the west coast. After his retirement he and his wife, Frances, ran the Parthenia Garden Apartments in Sepulveda,  Calif. In 1989, they moved to Otego.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in California and had attended the Otego United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Shriners.

Glenn was an avid reader and fisherman. He enjoyed raising roses and had also won prizes for his roses.

He will be greatly missed.

Glenn is survived by a son, Glenn B. Keeler Jr. of California; two daughters, Cindy Gray of Missouri and Mary Wingate of California; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Patricia and Fredrick Snyder of Gloversville and Janice and Michael Parsons of Sacramento,  Calif.; and a stepson and his wife, Walter L. and Karen Feltman of Otego; 10 stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

Glenn was predeceased by a sister, Hazel.

A service to celebrate the life of Glenn B. Keeler will be held on Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends may call just prior to the services when the family will be present.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad, Gilbertsville, N.Y. 13776 in loving memory of Glenn B. Keeler.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

James F. Garnsey

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Mr. James F. Garnsey, age 55, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, in Nashville, Tenn.

He was born in Cooperstown, N.Y., on June 21, 1944, and was raised in Schuyler Lake, N.Y., and made his home in Nashville, Tenn.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. His occupation was animal husbandry with Dodson's Rabbitry in the Bethesda Community.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Eleanor Garnsey of Schuyler Lake, N.Y.; his wife, Mrs. Mamie Garnsey of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; daughters, Janice  Taylor of College Grove, Tenn., and Michelle Bruzda of Nashville, Tenn,; grandchildren, Laken Bruzda and Matthew Taylor; two stepsons and their children; brother, Wayne "Butch" Garnsey of Richfield Springs, N.Y.; and many aunts and uncles.

Visitation was in Franklin, Tenn., on Nov. 20, 1999.

Benjamin Gregory

SOUTH PLYMOUTH — Funeral services for Benjamin Gregory will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
