Robert D. Cantwell

DELHI — Robert D. Cantwell, 70, of Delhi, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 23, 1999, at Fox Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta, following an extended illness.

He was born April 22, 1929, in Delhi, the son of Donald J. and Anna K. (Close) Cantwell.

He received his education at Delaware Academy and enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the Military Police (1947-49) during the Korean Occupation.

He later married Audrey J. Lovelace on Dec. 9, 1961, in Oneonta.

In early years, Bob delivered milk for the former Catskill Dairy and subsequently was employed for 25 years as a police officer with the New York City Board of Water Supply at Beerston. During those years he was also a part-time line man for the Delhi Telephone Co.

A lifelong Delhi resident, Bob was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Delhi Fire Department and the Delaware County Shields.

An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and in previous years was an active leader in Boy Scout Troop #33, Delhi.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Audrey J. Cantwell; his five children, James and Lee Cantwell of Sayre, Pa., Donald and Cynthia Cantwell of East Meredith, Teena and Jeffrey Smith of Charleston, S.C., Rose and Alan Winters of Apalachin and Bard and Heather Cantwell of Birmingham, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Doris and Bill McRedmond and Evelyn and William Bedient; an aunt, Margaret Thompson, all of Delhi; his mother-in-law, Lois Lovelace of Oneonta; and a brother-in-law, Phillip and Elsie Lovelace of Ada, Okla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins

He was predeceased by his brother, Edward Cantwell; and sister, Joan Tietjen.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral and committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at the First Baptist Church, Delhi, by the Rev. James McEathron, pastor. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery,

Memorial contributions to the Delhi Emergency Squad or the American Diabetes Association will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Albert J. Evans

NORWICH — Albert J. Evans, 74, of Norwich, former Chenango County treasurer, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, and local auctioneer, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 22, 1999, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Citra, Fla.

Born and raised in Norwich, Al was a graduate of the Norwich High School, Class of 1941. At this time, Al began what would become a lifelong association with the agriculture industry and a prominent political career.

Beginning with a dairy farm on Route 23, which he operated for a short time, Al and his father, Hubert, started and operated the Norwich Commission Livestock Sales and also the Evans Family Auction business. His uncle, Will Evans, assisted with the auction business early on, and Al's sons and grandsons became involved in later years.

Deeply involved with the 4-H, Al's association went back to his boyhood when he began showing cattle at the Chenango County Fair.

He was a longtime member of the Fair Board, and was serving as its president. He was a former Assistant County 4-H Extension Agent, a former member of the board of trustees for the Broad Street United Methodist Church, and a former superintendent of Sunday schools for the church.

Al's political career spanned from 1958-1986. He served as a Norwich town justice, town of Norwich supervisor and chairman of the Board of Supervisors; he had also served as Chenango County treasurer for many years.

As was his wife, Thelma, Al was a charter member of the Norwich Township Grange, and was a current member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Norwich.

Following his retirement, Al enjoyed spending time with his wife in Florida, where he would enjoy distributing maple syrup, which was made on the Evans Family Farm.

Along with Thelma, Al enjoyed and was a great promoter of the Chenango County Bluegrass and Gospel Festival.

Born April 6, 1925, Al was the son of Hubert W. and Celia (Aldrich) Evans.

On May 27, 1945, in Norwich, he married Thelma Tremper.

Al is survived by his children, Robert J. Evans and his partner, Barton H. Snedaker, William E. and Linda H. Evans, Richard L. and Paula T. Evans, David J. and Susan M. Evans and Scott M. and Michele R. Evans, all of Norwich; by his 12 grandchildren, Eric Evans and his wife, Peggy, of Oxford, Pa., R. Keith Evans and his wife, Joanne, of Norwich, Kristie Woodall and husband, Jamie, of Factoryville, Pa., Melissa Evans and fiancee, Matt Halicy, of Fairfax, Va., Adam Evans of Clark's Summit, Pa., Karrie Evans, Nathan Evans, Megan Evans, Jonna Evans, Julia Evans, Amanda Evans and Jacob Evans, all of Norwich. He is also survived by his five great-grandchildren, Bryant Evans, Evan Woodall, Kara Evans and Amber and Jackie Hill; by his brother and sister-in-law, Merton P. Evans and his wife, Betty, of Canton; and by two nieces, Virginia Leamy of Ogdensburg and Linda Watrous of Canton. Several cousins also survive.

Al was predeceased by his nephew, M. Perry Evans.

Funeral services for Al will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Brian Conover officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Saturday, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Members of the Chenango County Board of Supervisors will pay their respects at 3 p.m., followed at 3:15 p.m. by members of the Norwich Town Board.

Memorial contributions in Al's memory may be made to the Norwich 4-H program. Checks should be made out to "Cooperative Extension" with a notation "in memory of Al Evans'" and mailed to the Extension at 99 North Broad St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815 or to the Missions Fund, Calvary Baptist Church, 75 Calvary Dr., Norwich, with checks made payable to Calvary Baptist Church.

Thelma Evans

NORWICH — Thelma Tremper Evans, 72, of Norwich, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 22, 1999, in Citra, Fla., from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Citra, Fla.

A lifelong Norwich area resident, Thelma was born and educated in Norwich, graduating from the Norwich High School, Class of 1943.

She worked for a brief period for Chenango County Department of Social Services until her marriage to Albert Evans on May 27, 1945.

A warm and understanding woman, Thelma was, above all, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She had done volunteer work for the Norwich Schools as a teacher's aide, and had taught Sunday School at the Broad Street United Methodist Church.

She was a past president of the Broad Street United Methodist Church Woman's Group, and also past president of the Chenango County Republican's Women's Club. Thelma was very active in 4-H, which is where she met Al. She was also a charter member of the Norwich Township Grange, and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Norwich.

Born Dec. 30, 1926, in Norwich, Thelma was the daughter of Edwin E. and Kathleen V. (Harris) Tremper.

On May 27, 1945, in Norwich, she married Albert J. Evans.

Thelma is survived by her children: Robert J. Evans and his partner, Barton H. Snedaker, William E. and Linda H. Evans, Richard L. and Paula T. Evans, David J. and Susan M. Evans and Scott M. and Michele R. Evans, all of Norwich; by her 12 grandchildren, Eric Evans and his wife, Peggy, of Oxford, Pa., R. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Saturday, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the RP Foundation for Fighting Blindness, P.O. Box 17279, Baltimore, Md. 21297-0495 or to the Missions Fund, Calvary Baptist Church, 75 Calvary Dr., Norwich, with checks made payable to Calvary Baptist Church.

Myron Manwarren

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Myron S. Manwarren, 68, of South New Berlin, passed away Monday evening, Nov. 22, 1999, in the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital of Cooperstown.

Born in Oxford, Myron grew up in the Preston, Pharsalia and Norwich areas, attending school in Norwich. Following his schooling, he went to work on several area farms before taking a job with Craine Silo.

Myron then entered the Army, serving his country during the Korean Conflict, working as an ordinance mechanical inspector from 1952-1954. He continued this work when he returned home, taking a job with Smith Ford of Norwich as an auto body mechanic and eventually opening his own body shop in the Earl Wightman Garage. Highly regarded in the area of auto body work, Myron bought the Gulf Gas Station in South New Berlin in 1962, and continued to operate it as a gas station and auto body repair shop.

In 1973, he opened another auto body repair shop at his home, which he ran until ill health forced him to retire. Even under those circumstances, not wanting to give up repair work, he began repairing small appliances.

When not working, Myron was an avid fan of country music. He enjoyed listening to and collecting country music records. His extensive collection of hundreds of records brought him much enjoyment.

Born May 3, 1931, Myron was the son of Ward H. and Rose May (Gardner) Manwarren.

On July 2, 1955, in Norwich, he married Kathleen (Kathy) Miller, who survives. Besides his wife, Kathy, Myron is survived by his children, Barbara Butler and her husband, James, of Gilbertsville, Steven S. Manwarren of South New Berlin and Michael S. Manwarren of Arcadia, Fla.; and by his faithful cocker spaniel companion, Buddy. He is also survived by his sister, Bertha Blackman and husband, Fred, of East Pharsalia; two brothers and their wives, Melvin (Doc) and Dorothy Manwarren of Oxford and Stewart and June Manwarren of South Plymouth; four grandchildren, James, Heather, Nicole and Autumn Butler; and a brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law, Norman and Hazel McIntyre of Hubbardsville, Mildred Manwarren of Sherburne and Nita Manwarren of Connecticut.

Myron was predeceased by his granddaughter, Emily Suzanne Butler in 1995; by his sister, Ruth Bair; and by four brothers, Kenneth, LaVern, Rolland and Arley Manwarren.

Funeral services for Myron will be held on Friday at 8 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Romeyn Kipp, pastor of the Holmesville Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be at a later date. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Friday, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the South New Berlin Emergency Squad, South New Berlin or to the SPCA, East River Road, Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Frank X. Ricca

OTEGO — Mr. Frank X. Ricca, 74, of Otego, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Brooklyn, the son of John and Ursula (LaPlace) Ricca.

Frank married the former Ethel May Krekeler on April 10, 1946, in Brooklyn, who survives him.

Frank served in the United States Navy as a radio operator in World War II in the South Pacific from 1943-1946.

He was a training officer for the state of New York division of Veterans Affairs in Albany, retiring in February 1990.

He has been a resident of Otego for the past 25 years and before that lived in Freeport, Long Island.

Frank was a graduate of Brooklyn College, past county commander of the Queens County American Legion, past commander of American Legion Post #118 Woodhaven, Queens, member of the Oneonta V.F.W., served as a member of the Unatego school board for 15 years, past president of the Otego Rotary Club and recipient of a Paul Harris Fellowship Award and presently the sergeant-at-arms for the Otego Rotary Club, member of the village of Otego Planning Board and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Frank is survived by his wife, Ethel May Ricca of Otego; two sons, James Ricca and his companion and family friend, Carol Klein, of Otego and Robert Ricca and his wife, Brenda, of Otego; two brothers, James Ricca of Virginia and John Ricca of Kentucky; four grandchildren, Lisa Ricca of Long Island, Mrs. Christine (Paul) DeCarlo of Gaithersburg, Md., Nicole Ricca of Otego and Frank J. Ricca of Otego.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m., Monday Nov. 29, 1999, from St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Walnut Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220 in memory of Frank X. Ricca.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Ruth Rodgers

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Ruth Myraette Kane Rodgers, 95, formerly of Cliffside, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home.

Ruth was born in Hartwick on Feb. 13, 1904, a daughter of Emery and Minnie (Hitt Boyd) Kane.

Mrs. Rodgers was a graduate of Oneonta High School and then graduated from the Oneonta Normal School and received her bachelor's of science of education in 1946.

She married William T. Rodgers (who predeceased her on April 7, 1982) on June 23, 1940.

Ruth taught for several years in one-room schools near Oneonta, several years as principal and teacher at Middlefield and 20 years as fourth-grade teacher at Gilbertsville.

Mrs. Rodgers was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, Otsego County Retired Teachers Association, the Golden Age Club of Oneonta (having served as president and vice president), the Middlefield Historical Association, AARP and the Center City Senior Citizens at Oneonta.

She enjoyed writing poetry, reading, needlework, bridge, playing pinochle and her love of teaching.

Ruth is survived by a sister, Mrs. Robert (Metta) Chambers of Dade City, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Nina Finch and Mrs. Chester (Neva) Moore; and four brothers, Kenneth Kane, Clarence Kane, Charles Kane and Leon Kane.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John C. Young officiating.

Calling hours will be on Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

Mrs. Rodgers will be placed in the receiving vault at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown until burial in the spring in the Fly Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Hartwick Emergency Squad at P.O. Box 208, Hartwick, N.Y. 13348.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Michael Quigley

MARGARETVILLE — Michael Quigley, 85, of Main Street, Margaretville, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

He was born July 23, 1914, in Tryone County, Ireland, the son of Philip Quigley and Winifred McKelvy.

He married Sarah Gallinagh. She died in 1947.

He was a butcher in England and Ireland, a custodian at Bronxsville High School, Bronxsville.

He lived in England for 30 years, 1934-1964, and in Margaretville for 20 years.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, and the Senior Citizens Club.

Michael is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Philip and Shiela Quigley of Yonkers and Michael and Ona Quigley of England; four grandchildren; two sisters, Winifred Quigley of Margaretville and Catherine Quigley of Ireland; two brothers, John Quigley and Paul Quigley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Philip, Thomas and James.

A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at 12:30 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell officiating. Burial will be at St. Francis De Sales Cemetery, Shandaken. Calling hours will be Friday, Nov. 26, at Sacred Heart Church, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions may be made to Children's Fund at Sacred Heart Church or Helping Hands Fund at Mountainside Residential Care Center.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Mary Sayko

NORWICH — Mary Sayko, 95, of Norwich, and formerly of Oneonta, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at the Gilmour Health Center in Norwich.

Mrs. Sayko was born Aug. 4, 1904, in Barylew, Poland, the daughter of Frank and Natalia (Mytruk) Remizowski.

She married Paul D. Sayko on Oct. 31, 1925, in Clinton. Mr. Sayko died on Jan. 25, 1978.

A resident of Oneonta since her marriage, she was a member of St. James Episcopal Church. Since 1987, Mrs. Sayko has been a resident of Norwich.

Mrs. Sayko is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John and Millie Sayko of Norwich and Lakeland, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Helen Sayko of North Syracuse; three grandsons and their wives, Victor and Carolyn Sayko of Skaneateles, Steven and Victoria Sayko of Phoenixville, Pa., and John and Judy Sayko of Denver, Pa.; five great-grandchildren, Danielle Sayko of Clay, Ryan Sayko and Victoria Sayko of Skaneateles, Paul Sayko of Phoenixville, Pa., and Christy Sayko of Rochester.

A son, Paul D. Sayko Jr., predeceased her.

Recitation of the Burial Office will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at 10 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with Carola von Wrangel, lay assistant of St. James Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. James Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Wanetta Veen

OTEGO — Wanetta Pearl Liddle Knapp Veen, 88, of Otego, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at her residence.

She was born March 10, 1911, in Carlstadt, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Walter J. and Lily May (Maxwell) Liddle.

Wanetta was twice married. Her first marriage was to Kenneth Knapp in 1930. He was a state trooper who was killed in 1945 in the line of duty. Her second marriage was to Harry J. Veen in 1949. He died in 1988.

Wanetta was an assembly worker for Astrocom in Colliersville in her later years before retirement.

She was a loving mother who was active in church and school activities, the PTO and Cub Scouts.

She was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church and the Otego Seniors.

Wanetta spent her married life in Schenevus, Greene and Otego. She had lived for the past 10 years with her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Albert Camp.

Wanetta is survived by nine children and their spouses, Alberta and John Knapp Rathbun of Anoka, Minn., Evelyn and Richard Knapp Stewart of Glens Falls, Richard and Mickey Veen of Plattsburgh, Joan and Albert Knapp Camp of Otego, Patricia Veen Corn of Middletown, Theodore and Gladys Knapp of Harrisburg, Pa., Mildred and John Veen Stiegert of Syracuse, Gorden and Mary Veen of Columbus, Ohio, and Stanley and Suzie Lee Veen of North Franklin; 29 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Mabel Veen Craft.

A service to celebrate the life of Wanetta will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, at the Otego United Methodist Church, Church Street, Otego, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating.

Wanetta was cremated and her ashes will be buried in the Sylvan Lawn Cemetery, Greene.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Wanetta Veen.
