Emilie S. Benac

SEWARD — Emilie S. Benac, 22, of Luenburg Turnpike, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County due to injuries sustained in a motor-vehicle accident.

Miss Benac was born Sept. 3, 1977, in Heidelberg, Germany, and was the daughter of Peter Benac and Kathleen A. Henry.

She was a 1996 graduate of Cobelskill-Richmondville High School, where she was involved with the high school choir, participated in government classes with honors and was a member of Students Against Drunk Driving. Miss Benac was a 1998 graduate of the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill, and was a peer educator. She was currently a junior at the State University College at Oneonta, majoring in psychology.

Miss Benac was a person who loved animals and was particularly fond of cats and dogs.

Miss Benac is survived by her mother, Kathleen A. Henry of Seward; her father and stepmother, Peter and Rita Benac of Kittrell, N.C.; her brothers, Matthew S. Benac of Seward and Cody J. Benac of Fulton (Oswego); her sisters, Lacey R. Benac of Fulton (Oswego), Ellen West of Bunn, N.C., and Tracey West of Cary, N.C.; her maternal grandparents, William D. and Therese (Cooper) Henry of Schoharie; her maternal great-grandmother, Rosalie C. Cooper of Hyndsville; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church,  Washington Heights, Cobleskill. Celebrant will be the Rev. Thomas F. Berardi, assisted by the Rev. Scott Thompson of the Wesleyan Church of Cobleskill. Calling hours will be held Friday evening, Nov. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, Building Fund, Grandview Drive, Cobleskill.

Gary A. Scott

PLYMOUTH — Gary A. Scott, 54, of County Road 16, Plymouth, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, Nov. 24, 1999, at his home.

He was born March 16, 1945, in Bainbridge. Gary was the son of the late Harry A. and Marion Williams Scott.

On Sept. 26, 1992, he married Janice Franklin in Mount Upton.

For the past 32 years, Gary was employed by the Amphenol Corp. in Sidney.

He was a member of the Masonville Federated Church, Masonville, and the I.A.M. and A.W. Local 1529, Sidney.

Gary enjoyed his flowers, family gatherings and his friends. He will be greatly missed by all.

Gary is survived by his wife, Mrs. Janice L. Scott of Plymouth; stepson and daughter-in-law, Brian and Brenda Franklin of South Plymouth; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Luann and Robert Kida of Oxford; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Ann Scott of Masonville, Keith and Colleen Scott of Masonville and Bruce Scott of Binghamton; sister-in-law, Yvonne Osborne of Florida; two aunts, Mrs. Lottie Puffer and Mrs. Naomi Scott; six grandchildren, Dustin Loomis, Talya Franklin, Amber Kida, Matthew Myers, Kristie Myers and Arron Kida; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Lee and Wallace A. Scott.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, at the Federated Church, Masonville, with the Rev. J. Alvin Mosher, McGraw, officiating. Burial will be in the Otselic Valley Cemetery.

Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with his family in attendance.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815 or to the Federated Church, Masonville, N.Y. 13804.

Thomas L. Gould

LEONARDSVILLE — Thomas L. Gould, 28, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center after a battle with Hodgkin's Disease.

He was born Oct. 19, 1971, in Utica, the son of James and Ellen Eckert Gould.

Thomas was a 1990 graduate of Mount Markham School.

He was a dairy farmer, employed by the Stanton Farm, Edmeston. He was a stock car and sports enthusiast.

Mr. Gould was a member of the Sons of the American Legion and was a past vice president and member of the Leonardsville Fire Department.

Mr. Gould is survived by his parents; two daughters, Kayla and Megan; a sister, Sherri Gould and fiancee, David Ellsworth; two brothers, James and wife, Dodie Gould, and Steven Gould and fiancee, Tonya King; nieces, Natalie and Courtney; a nephew, Allan; maternal grandparents, Robert and Florence Arnold; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, West Winfield, with the Rev. Ernest Clemens officiating. Interment will be in Unadilla Forks Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Special thanks to St. Elizabeth Medical Center ICU staff and 3B Oncology Personnel at University Hospital in Syracuse; two special friends; Lori Marsh and Molly Brown; Doug Capraro of the Winfield Medical Center; and especially Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Aikins and family.

Julia G. Loudon

SIDNEY — Mrs. Julia Gabriel Loudon, 96, of Sidney, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born March 13, 1903, in Walton, the daughter of John and Bessie (Wolf) Gabriel.

She married Earl J. Loudon on Nov. 20, 1940. He died Jan. 19, 1994.

Julia resided in Oneonta for most of her life. She was employed by the Oneonta Glove Factory and retired after more than 30 years.

Julia is survived by two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Donald C. and Joan Loudon of Sidney and James A. and Faith Loudon of Pasadena, Md.; two stepdaughters and stepson, Emily Holdridge of Peru and Marjorie and Martin Jacobs of Conklin; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Gabriel of Gary; and a nephew, the Rev. Richard Gabriel of Beach Lake, Pa.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Richard Gabriel officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Ida P. Judd

ONEONTA — Ida P. Judd, 90, of Oneonta, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 24, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Oct. 17, 1909, in Colesville, the daughter of Walter L. and Ruth Pratt.

Ida was an Oneonta resident since 1911. She was a telephone operator for New York Tel in Oneonta for 44 years, retiring in March 1973.

Ida was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Ida is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Susan C. and Franklin D. Rivenburgh of New Carlisle, Ohio; her sister-in-law, Frances Pratt of Afton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Ida was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Agnes V. Colyer; and a brother, Lavern H. Pratt.

Private, graveside services will be held at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery at the convenience of Ida's family.

At Ida's request, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Ida P. Judd.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Zella S. Darrin

SIDNEY — Mrs. Zella S. Darrin, 91, a resident at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford, and formerly from West Main Street, Sidney, passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 25, 1999, at her home in Oxford.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Margaret O'Connor

SOUTH VALLEY - Margaret C. O'Connor, 91, of South Valley died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at her home with her family by her side.

She was born Feb. 20, 1908, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Sylvester and Louisa (Grouse) Bame.

She married Anthony J. O'Connor on June 6, 1927, in Brooklyn.

Mrs. O'Connor resided in West Islip before moving to South Valley in 1977.

Prior to her marriage she worked as a telephone operator for New York Telephone Co. in Brooklyn, she then was employed as the chief operator at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital for many years.

Mrs. O'Connor was a member of the South Valley Women's Club and the Roseboom Grange #1414.

Mrs. O'Connor is survived by two daughters, Mary L. Cameron of South Valley and Mrs. Robert (Audrey) Froewiss of Fort Worth,  Texas; five grandchildren, Mrs. Fred (Mary) Kersman of Decatur, Doug Cameron of Burbank,  Calif., Geoffrey Froewiss of Buffalo, Robert Froewiss of Ventura,  Calif. and Mrs. Lenord (Lynne) Harmon of Fort Worth,  Texas; eight great-grandsons, Alexander, Frederick and Johnathan Kersman of Decatur, Geoffrey and Christopher Froewiss of Buffalo, Trey and Ryan Harmon of Fort Worth,  Texas, and Evan Froewiss of Ventura,  Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony, on Jan. 21, 1970, a son-in-law, Alexander Cameron on March 23, 1989, a brother, Frank Bame on Dec. 2, 1997, and a sister-in-law, Anne Bame on Aug. 31, 1998.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester, with the Rev. Alan Miller, pastor of the First Christian Church of South Valley, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26, at the Skinner Funeral Chapel.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. O'Connor to the American Lung Association of Mid-New York, 311 Turner St., Suite 415, Utica, N.Y. 13501.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Uriah J. Shaffer

DADE CITY, Fla. — Uriah Judson Shaffer, 22, of Dade City, Fla., died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, as the result of a motorcycle accident.

A native of Oneonta, N.Y., he had lived most of his life in Florida.

Uriah is survived by his mother, Regina Shaffer of Dade City, Fla.; his father, Kenneth Judson Shaffer of Dade City; two sisters, Alecia Shaffer and Brooke Leonard, both of Dade City; two brothers, Donald Shaffer and Brandon Leonard, both of Dade City; two stepbrothers, Darrell and Robert Saxe, both of Dade City; one stepsister, Cindy Gunn of Junction City, Kan.; grandmothers, Mabel Hitchcock and Patricia Solovitch, both of Oneonta, N.Y.; a grandfather, Judson Kenneth Shaffer of  Johnson City, N.Y.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, in Dade City, Fla.

Angelo Mercadante

DELHI — Angelo Joseph Mercadante, 70, of Delhi died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 4, 1929, in the Bronx, to Rocco and Adeline Mercadante.

He was predeceased by his son, Richard Vincent and sister, Patricia Irene.

This devoted father, brother and grandfather is survived by his older sister, Rose Mary Snyder; and brothers, Michael and Thomas Mercadante. He also leaves behind four wonderful and loving children, oldest son, Kenneth Joseph of Delhi, daughter, Eileen, youngest son, Kenneth and stepson, Carlos of Miami, Fla.; and six grandchildren, Michelle Lowe, Laura Jones, Michael and Mathew of Delhi, and Naomi and Alyssa of Florida. He is also survived by ex-wives, Gaynor Germaine, whom he married in Brooklyn in 1950, and Aracely Mercadante, in Miami, Fla., in 1971.

Angelo was a cook in New York City as well as in Miami, where he lived for 25 years before retiring and moving up to Delhi in 1993.

He will always be remembered as a kind and gentle man to all who knew him.

Funeral services were private. Friends may pay their respects to the family between the hours of 4 and 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, with memorial services to follow at 5:30 p.m. at the Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Paul Keehr of the Assembly of God in Delhi, Route 28, officiating.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Thomas J. Papa

ONEONTA — Thomas J. Papa, 67, of Oneonta died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta, unexpectedly.

He was born on Sept. 2, 1932, in Frankfort, the son of Sandy and Helen (Curtis) Papa.

He married Margaret Babcock on May, 24, 1952, in Ilion.

Mr. Papa was a manager of the Endicott  Johnson Shoe Store in Oneonta for many years and more recently was associated with the State University College at Oneonta, until his retirement in 1987.

He was a lifelong area resident and was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, BPOE 1312 and the Oneonta American Legion.

Mr. Papa is survived by his wife at home; one son, Thomas (Chris) Papa of Orlando, Fla.; one daughter, Karen M. Donovan of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Shirley M. Fiorentino of Herkimer in July of this year.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Mr. Papa was cremated and his ashes will be interred at the convenience of his family.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Edward P. Mikson

BURLINGTON FLATS — Edward P. Mikson, 92, of Burlington Flats and formerly of Staten Island, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999.

He was born Sept. 27, 1907, in Staten Island, the son of Joseph and Anna (Sasinek) Mikson.

Edward is survived by his wife, Anna; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carolyn Mikson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Bill Highfield officiating.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Alfred B. Harris

ONEONTA — Mr. Alfred B. Harris, 82, of Oneonta, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 23, 1999, at the Tender Care Family Home in Worcester.

He was born March 18, 1917, in Oneonta, the son of Benjamin J. and Mary Elliot Harris.

Al was married to the former Dorothy Johnston on June 22, 1985. She died May 1, 1986.

He was the owner and operator of the former Harris Dry Cleaners at 2 Schaffer Ave. in Oneonta, which he operated since 1953 to his retirement. At one time he had worked for the Oneonta Grocery Co., Scintilla at Sidney and Oneonta Family Cleaner.

Alfred graduated on Dec. 21, 1945, from the National Association Institute of Dyeing and Cleaning in Silver Springs, Md.

He was a member of the Oneonta Country Club, Mens Golf Association and the Oneonta BPOE Lodge 1312.

Alfred is survived by one son, Alfred B. Harris Jr. of Salem Va.; two daughters, Susan Glanzman of Cliffside, Md., and Diane D. Argyle of Valatie; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert J. (Wanda Putnam) Harris of Oneonta; three grandchildren, Denise E. Likens of Salem, Va., Matthew Harris of Roanoke, Va., and Jill Harris of Roanoke, Va.; one great-grandson,  Taylor Likens. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.
