Edwin M. Doig

BOVINA — Edwin M. Doig, 94, of Bovina, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born July 27, 1905, in Bovina, the son of Milton and Jennie (Thomson) Doig.

He married Gladys Biggar on April 2, 1933. She predeceased him.

Mr. Doig is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Morse of Denver,  Colo.; two sons, Raymond Doig of Maine and Donald Doig of Bovina; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Edwin was a veteran of the United States Army from 1926-29, following active duty he came home to be a dairy farmer in Bovina; he served as a fire commissioner in Bovina, a director in Bovina Cooperative Insurance; on the Board of Education at South Kortright Central School for 15 years; and was a member of the Bovina Presbyterian Church.

Memorial services will be on Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Bovina United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Edward McNulty officiating. Burial will take place at Bovina Cemetery.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Bovina United Presbyterian Church or the Bovina Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Dorcas Thorn

MILFORD — Dorcas Thorn, 65, died Thursday morning, Nov. 25, 1999, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Dorcas was born June 5, 1934, in Oneonta, the daughter of Homer Ernest and Agnes Ona (Butts) Lyon.

She married Allen LeRoy Thorn Sr. on Oct. 26, 1952, in Oneonta.

She was a retired employee of M.I. Bassett Hospital after 17 years of employment.

Dorcas is survived by her husband of 47 years, Allen L. Thorn Sr. of Milford; four sons, Wesley Thorn of Texline,  Texas, Allen L. Thorn Jr. of Farmingdale, N.J., Robert John Thorn of Colliersville and Stephen H. Thorn of Marcy; two daughters, Tina Marie Zachow of Hartwick and Deborah Cole of Milford; two sisters, Dorothy Wooden and Nancy Cleveland of Oneonta; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Rae Phoenix.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Douglas Burleigh, chaplain of the M.I. Bassett Hospital officiating.

Burial will be in the spring on the Lyon family plot in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon Wednesday until service time.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Milford Emergency Squad, Milford, N.Y. 13807 or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Michael Tisenchek

COLONIE — Michael D. Tisenchek, 19, of Colonie, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, at Albany Medical Center as the result of injuries sustained in a motor-vehicle accident on Nov. 21, 1999, in Colonie.

Michael was born in Niskayuna on Aug. 29, 1980, the cherished son of Louis G. and Cathryn (Sparaco) Tisenchek Jr.

He was a 1998 graduate of Shaker High School, and currently a student at Hudson Valley Community College, studying automotive mechanics.

He was a lifelong resident of Colonie and a member of the Boght Community Fire Department. He also was a past member of the Civil Air Patrol.

Michael worked at Otto Oldsmobile and at Keilen's Body Shop, doing body work and automotive repair. He currently was employed by McCabes Automotive in Latham. Michael and his friends could fix anything on wheels.

As a final gift to humanity, Michael donated all of his organs to the Albany Medical Center for organ transplant and donation.

Survivors in addition to his parents include his twin brother, Jeff Tisenchek of Colonie; his older brother, Nick Tisenchek, also of Colonie; his paternal grandparents, Louis and Betty Tisenchek of Oneonta; and his maternal grandparents, Dominic and Mary Sparaco of Milford. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins and many dear friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at 8 a.m. in the chapel of St. Coleman's Home, Boght Road, Watervliet.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boght Fire Co., P.O. Box 498, Cohoes, N.Y. 12047.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John S. McGrath

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — John Seaton McGrath, 85, of East Lake Road, died on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born July 14, 1914, in Richfield Springs, son of the late John Henry and Madeline Seaton McGrath.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, he graduated from Ilion High School, "Class of 1934." He went on to the American Academy of Embalming and Mortuary Research in New York City, graduating in 1935.

He first worked for the Thomas Quinn Funeral Home, Queens, and then for the Everett Brockett Funeral Home in South Hampton, Long Island.

On May 21, 1940, he married Elizabeth Joslyn in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. It was in 1940 that he and his wife moved back to Richfield Springs, where he managed the Richfield Springs Golf Course.

During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1944.

In 1950, he became affiliated with his father in the family funeral business, and in 1952, moved the funeral home to its current location on West James Street. The funeral business was sold in 1977, but he remained active until he retired in 1980. He also owned and operated the Otsego Memorial Co. on Lake Street, was a sales representative for Cherry Valley Memorials and operated the local ambulance service.

He was a member of Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, a member and past president of the Richfield Springs Rotary Club, and had worked on the Village Clock restoration committee. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #616 Richfield Springs, the Wataqua Club and at one time was in charge of the Lakeview Cemetery and the Crane Memorial Cemeteries.

He was an Exempt Richfield Springs volunteer firefighter and a commissioner of the town of Exeter Volunteer Fire Department.

Besides his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth "Lib" McGrath, he leaves several nieces, nephews, cousins, two grandnieces and one grandnephew.

He was preceded by his sister, Madeline Quaif.

A graveside funeral service is being planned for next spring in Saint Joseph's Cemetery. An announcement will be made at that time.

Memorial donations may be made to the Schuyler Lake First Responders, Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department or the Richfield Springs Public Library.

All funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Barbara R. Rhyde

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mrs. Barbara R. Rhyde, 54, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Nov. 10, 1945, in Cooperstown, the daughter of William and Bertha (Montgomery) Johnson.

On Aug. 6, 1983, she married Edward Rhyde at Hyde Hall; he survives.

She was a farm girl from East Springfield for many years. She worked for the Terrace Motor Inn, Route 80, Cooperstown, for 17 years and several of the diners in Richfield Springs. More recently, she worked for the Wal-Mart Distribution Center, Sharon Springs, for four years.

Mrs. Rhyde enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, home crafts, dancing and bowling.

Besides her husband, Edward Rhyde of East Springfield, she is survived by her mother, Bertha  Johnson of East Springfield; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris and Jerome Young of East Springfield and Charlotte and William Waite of West Winfield; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; cousins; and her beloved cats, Boots and Squeaker.

She was predeceased by her father, William Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, in the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Jared VanWagenen, pastor of the Schoharie Reformed Church, officiating. Cremation will follow at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley; burial in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center, will take place at a later date.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, Dec. 2, at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions in Mrs. Rhyde's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, the Bush Cancer Center at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, or the East Springfield Fire Department, East Springfield.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, 264-8141.

Oril Hunt Stanford

TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Oril Hunt Stanford, former resident of Norwich, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, in Twin Falls, Idaho.

She was born Jan. 25, 1910, at her parents' farm near the town of New Berlin.

She graduated from high school in Norwich and later from the University of Arizona in Tucson in 1935.

As a young woman, she taught physical education. She especially enjoyed teaching archery and horseback riding. She was a skillful horseback rider and swimmer herself. She returned to college in her 50s in Oneonta and became certified as an elementary education teacher. She was dedicated to her profession and was especially thrilled to teach reading.

Upon retirement in 1971, she traveled, volunteered for political candidates and worked on various social causes that she felt would improve the world's condition. She was very involved in the New York State Organic Farmers' Association.

She often said that she lived in the most interesting century, having gone from the horse and buggy to the moon.

She is survived by her only child, Jeanette Baker, of Jerome, Idaho.

A memorial service will be held for her at the United Church of Christ in Norwich on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m.

Bernice Kogan

STAMFORD — With deep regret, the family announces the death of Bernice Kogan on Nov. 24, 1999.

Mrs. Kogan was the widow of the late Dr. Jerome Kogan and mother of the late Richard Kogan.

Dr. Kogan practiced medicine in Stamford for 40 years and the Kogan family lived and were active in the Stamford community.

Mrs. Kogan's passing will sadden those who remember her.

Richard Mooney

WEST LAURENS — Richard Donald Mooney, 56, died suddenly Wednesday morning, Dec. 1, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Richard was born Jan. 17, 1943, in Cooperstown, the son of Donald and Ruth (McIntyre) Mooney.

Richard married Deborahann Stalder on July 3, 1976, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

Richard was a retired employee of Country Club Chevrolet in Oneonta, having retired after 34 years of employment. He was a sports car collector, who enjoyed showing his cars off at area auto shows.

Richard loved and enjoyed animals.

Richard is survived by his wife of 23 years, Deborahann Mooney of West Laurens; his mother, Ruth Mooney of Cooperstown; and Donald Mooney of Worcester; a mother-in-law, Dolores Stalder of Oneonta; a brother-in-law and his wife, Len and Dawn Stalder of Otego; brother-in-law, Cliff Stalder of Bradenton, Fla.; a nephew and wife, David and Mary Beth Stalder of Oneonta; two uncles, Charles McIntyre of North Little Rock, Ark., and John McIntyre of Richmondville; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons. The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Dorothy L. Byrnes

DELHI — Dorothy L. Byrnes, 85, formerly of Sidney and Sidney Center, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, at Countryside Care Facility, Delhi.

She was born to the late Harvey F. and Lillian (Guyette) Davis on Dec. 11, 1913, in New York City.

Mrs. Byrnes married Gerald Byrnes on July 21, 1934, in Nyack. He predeceased her on Feb. 7, 1992.

Mrs. Byrnes is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gerald L. and Juliana Byrnes of Sidney Center; brother and sister-in-law, Armand and Mary Davis of East Hampton; three grandsons, David and Jacqueline Byrnes of Sidney, Christopher and Tammy Byrnes of Sidney and Michael Byrnes and Barbara Hartman of Sidney Center; three great-granddaughters, Nicole, Chelsi and Alyssa; and sister-in-law, Agnes Davis of Springfield, Mass.

She is also predeceased by a brother, Robert Davis.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family at C.H. Landers Chapel, Sidney, with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, pastor of the Sidney Center Methodist Church, officiating.

At the families request there will be no calling hours.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, P.O. Box 182, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Archie R. Simcox

SOLVAY — Archie R. Simcox, 72, of Solvay, died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at home.

He was born in Grand Rapids, S.D.

He graduated from the Schenevus Central School.

He was a salesman for many years, and he retired after 20 years with Combined Life Insurance Co.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, the former Anita Rinnas; four sons, Paul B. of Syracuse, Neil A. of North Carolina, Timothy R. of Norwood and Scott A. of Australia; three daughters, Gay M. Simcox of Connecticut, Cheryl A. Avery of Ithaca and Diane L. Ernestine of Syracuse; three brothers, Jack of Oneonta, Steve of California and George of Florida; three sisters, Maxine Guyder of Florida and Ann Blume and Jennie Bergeron, both of California; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held 8 a.m. Tuesday at Pirro & Sons Funeral Home and 9 a.m. in St. Cecilia's Church, Solvay. Burial was held at the Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours were held 4 to 7 p.m., Monday at the funeral home, 514 Turtle St.

Frank H. Odell

NAPLES, Fla. — Frank H. Odell, 77, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, after a five-year battle with cancer.

He was born in Hobart on May 17, 1922, to the late Naomi C. and Harold E. Odell.

Upon graduation from Stamford Central School, he attended the University of Alabama and received a bachelor's degree in 1943. His ROTC class was assigned to the Coast Artillery School, OCS, Fort Monroe, Va., which led to his commission as a second lieutenant in January 1944. He had assignments in England, France and Germany before returning to the United States and being placed on reserve status as captain for the Corps of Engineers in January 1949.

Elizabeth Hetherington and Frank Odell were married Dec. 29, 1946, and Frank Odell enrolled in the Harvard Business School in September 1947 and received his master's degree in June 1949.

His 45-year career in banking with the State Bank of Albany and its successors started in June 1949. In 1971, he helped establish a holding company and became its first executive vice president. In July 1972, he became the 10th president of the State Bank of Albany (founded in 1803). He also served as vice chairman of the holding company, first known as United Bancorp and later as Norstar Bancorp.

Mr. Odell was involved with the 1987 Norstar and Fleet Financial merger and served on that board until 1993. He established residence in Naples after his retirement from the bank in 1987.

He was active in numerous banking and community organizations including chairman of trustees at the Albany YMCA; vice chairman, WMHT Public TV; board of directors, Saratoga Performing Arts Center; national director, Robert Morris Associates; and he was appointed to two terms on the New York State Banking Board by former Gov. Mario Cuomo.

Frank Odell is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Thomas and Carol Odell of Chatham, Mass., Nancy Odell Gavryck of South Deerfield, Mass.; and son-in-law, Richard Taylor, of Delmar. Grandchildren are Alison and John of Chatham, Sara and Emily of South Deerfield and Nicholas and Monica of Delmar.

His daughter, Susan O. Taylor, predeceased him in October 1997.

He held current memberships in the Fort Orange Club (past president); Harvard Club, New York City; Forum Club; Harvard Club, Naples (past president); Moorings Country Club; Wadsworth Lodge F and AM; and the Moorings Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service will be held Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Moorings Presbyterian Church, 791 Harbour Drive, Naples. A graveside service will be held at the Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart, in the spring.

The family will provide a simple bouquet at the service, but for those who wish to make a contribution, the following are a couple of suggestions: The Susan Odell  Taylor School, 116 Pinewoods Ave., Troy, N.Y. 12180 or the Hospice of Naples, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, Fla. 34105.

Hodges Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
