Carl A. Baker

COOPERSTOWN — Carl A. Baker, 79, of Hyde Park, passed away Friday afternoon, Dec. 3, 1999, at his home.

He was born on Feb. 9, 1920, in Hartwick, a son of John and Isabel H. (Alfson) Baker.

He married Alma Marr on Sept. 1, 1951, in Milford.

Carl was raised in Hartwick Seminary and attended the Hartwick Seminary District School and Cooperstown Central School.

He served his country in the United States Army Air Force during World War II in England and France.

For many years he was employed by area vegetable farms, including the Todd Farm. He had also worked at Mohican Florist and at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital. He loved greenhouse work and operated Baker's Greenhouse in Hyde Park from 1964 until 1996.

Carl loved music and enjoyed playing his fiddle at The Meadows' monthly birthday parties.

A member of Hartwick Christian Church, he was a loving husband and father who will be missed by his family and friends.

Carl is survived by his wife of 48 years, Alma of Hyde Park; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Steven Padula of Columbia Crossroads, Pa.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Judy Baker of Cooperstown and Ken and Sheryl Baker of Harlem, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Pasquale Ciotti of Troy; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert J. Baker, who died on Sept. 30, 1987.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at the Hartwick Christian Church, with the Rev. Laverne H. Saxer, pastor, officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be at a later date in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820, or the Hartwick Christian Church, P.O. Box 65, Hartwick, N.Y., 13348.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Dorothy M. Shaul

EARLVILLE — Mrs. Dorothy M. Shaul, 90, of South Main Street, passed away Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at the Crouse Community Center, Morrisville, following a brief illness.

She was born May 16, 1909, in Bloomville, the daughter of Emmett and Sophia Doutenville Burdick.

She was a graduate of Hobart High School, Hobart.

Dorothy was married to Ernest E. Sprague in Bloomville in June 1927. He predeceased her in 1951. In March 1956, she married Alva Shaul in Earlville. He predeceased her in 1971.

She had been a resident of Westville before moving to Earlville in 1955, where she assisted her husband in the operation of their chicken farm until 1965.

Mrs. Shaul was a member of the Westville United Methodist Church and the Earlville Senior Citizens Center. She was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Rebekah Lodge, both of Milford, and the Westville Grange.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, June and Kenneth Young of Westville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Richard and Sue Sprague of Binghamton and Harold and Linda Sprague of Earlville; a sister, Lottie Martin of East Meredith; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Leo and Mabel Burdick of Bloomville, Orlo (Sonny) and Ruth Burdick of  Washingtonville, and Olen and Ellen Burdick of Bloomville; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Oren Burdick; a sister, Anna VanZandt; and a grandson, Allan Young, in March 1999.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, from the Burgess Funeral Home, 3 Preston St., Earlville.

Burial will be in the Bloomville Cemetery, Bloomville.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the Earlville Senior Citizens Center, Earlville, N.Y. 13332.

Robert G. Wicks

COOPERSTOWN — Robert G. Wicks, age 59, of Thurston Hill Road, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born on Sept. 2, 1940, in Huntington. He was the son of John E. and Margaret E. (Blyman) Wicks.

Mr. Wicks was a 1951 graduate of Afton High School, a 1961 graduate of the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill, and then graduated in 1974 from Syracuse University with a bachelor's of science in business and economics. In 1994, he completed the Advanced Management Program at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

On Aug. 21, 1965, he married Deni Ward in Cooperstown.

Mr. Wicks was area sales manager for the Northeast Region for Hancor, Inc., a polyethylene drainage and water management product manufacturer. During his career with Hancor, he coordinated production and customer service for three manufacturing plants.

Enlisting in the United States Army in 1963, he led a distinguished career of 32 years rising through the ranks to colonel, retiring in 1995 from the United States Army Reserve. During his military career, his appointments included serving as battalion commander, 2nd Bn, 389th regt. 1st Brigade in Utica, from 1982-1984; he served as brigade executive officer, HHC 1st Brigade, 98th Division in Schenectady, from 1984-1986; deputy commander, 1209th USAG in Mattydale, 1986-1987; acting commander, 1209th USAG 1987, and commander from 1987-1990. He then served as brigade commander, 1st Brigade, 98 Div (TNG) in Schenectady, from 1990-1993. He then served as brigade commander, 7th Bde., 78 Div (EX) in North Syracuse, from 1993-1995.

During his Army career, he attended many schools and was a 1992 graduate of the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pa.

His decorations, service medals and badges received during his career include the Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Legion of Merit Award, Army Commendation Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army and the Army Service Ribbon.

Mr. Wicks community involvement included serving as present president of the Susquehanna SPCA in Cooperstown; Retired Reserve Officers Association and the Springfield Fire Department.

Mr. Wicks is survived by his wife of 34 years, Mrs. Deni Wicks of Cooperstown; a sister, Margaret B. Wicks of Bainbridge; two brothers, John E. Wicks and his wife, Dianne, of Coventry and H. Arthur Wicks and his wife, Katherine, of Frederick, Md.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, 25 Church St., Cooperstown.

Burial will follow at Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown. Members of the Springfield Fire Department will hold a service at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to: The Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or to the Springfield Fire Department, P.O. Box 358, Springfield Center, N.Y. 13468 or to an organization of one's choice.

Isabelle Swantak

HOBART — Isabelle Swantak of Hobart died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Howard Whitten

COOPERSTOWN — Howard Whitten, 103, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home, Cooperstown.

He was predeceased by his wife, Grace (Cook) Whitten, in 1987, whom he married on June 23, 1920; a son, Dean, a World War II casualty; a sister, Clara; and two brothers, Claude and Frank.

He was born on March 25, 1896, in Blue Hill, Neb., the son of George P. and Mary (Bullock) Whitten.

His youth was spent in the Brookfield and the New Berlin areas, where he attended the local schools. He later graduated from the Mechanics Institute of Technology in Rochester.

He and his wife owned and operated a dairy farm in the town of Columbus until 1948. Following that, and until his retirement, he managed feed stores in Leonardsville and West Edmeston, and was also employed at the New Berlin TV and Appliance Store and by the Lewis Spurr Heating and Plumbing Co. in New Berlin.

His hobbies included reading, gardening and coin collecting. He enjoyed singing and listening to music.

As a youth he was a charter member of the Boy Scouts of America in Brookfield. He was a member of the Columbus Quarter Community Church, where he served as trustee for many years. He also was a member of the New Berlin Senior Citizens and the Columbus Quarter Helping Hand.

During World War II he was an air raid warden in the Columbus area.

Howard is survived by two sons, Ned of Fullerton,  Calif., and Gordon and wife, Phillis, of Delhi; four granddaughters and son-in-laws, Donna Mitchell of Anaheim,  Calif., Nadine and Steven Pepus of Fullerton,  Calif., Diedra and Eric Cavella of Sea Isle City, N.J., and Lisa and Paul Osborn of Germantown, Md.; two grandsons, Gary of Eugene, Ore., and Craig and wife, Diane, of Sidney; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a kind man who was devoted to his family and friends and always had time to listen and add a helping hand when needed.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services on Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin. Pastor Ernest Clemons will be officiating. The family will be in attendance at the funeral home for a viewing immediately proceeding the funeral beginning at 12:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the funeral home on Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will be in the spring at the West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.

As a way of expressing the families thanks to the following organizations, memorial contributions may be made to the Columbus Quarter Community Church, care of Sue Pope, 90 N. Main St., New Berlin, N.Y.; The Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home, 48 Grove St., Cooperstown, N.Y.; the New Berlin or Cooperstown Volunteer Emergency Squads and the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home, where Howard had resided since 1989, and to the staff of the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc. for all of their care, concern and support.

Arrangements are with the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Beatrice C. Hilary

SIDNEY — Beatrice C. Hilary, 86, of 455 Valley View Rd., Bainbridge, passed away peacefully Monday morning, Dec. 6, 1999, at her residence.

She was born April 12, 1913, in Sidney. Bea was the daughter of the late Merville and Clarinda Alger Cook.

On Sept. 5, 1936, she married Francis W. Hilary at Beaver Falls. He predeceased her on Feb. 11, 1989.

For several years Mrs. Hilary was employed at the Amphenol Corp., Sidney. She was an avid supporter of numerous causes, peculiarly those that encourage peace among our people. Mrs. Hilary was also an avid bird watcher and was concerned about the environment in which we live.

She was a longtime member of the Home Bureau, Daughters of Union Veterans, D.A.R. and the I.A.M. and A.W. Local 1529, Sidney. Mrs. Hilary was also a member of the Defenders of Wildlife. She was a former member of the Sidney Fire Department Auxiliary, and was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America.

Mrs. Hilary is survived by her two sons, Merville and Richard Hilary; two daughters-in-law, Dorothy and Evelyn Hilary; Richard Hilary's three children, Holly Lynn Hilary-Moreno, Richard C. Hilary II and Scott A. Hilary; and her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Hilary; and Merville Hilary's two children, Michelle and Dustin Hilary. She is also survived by her niece, Clarinda Stangel; and a godchild, Michelle Parent.

She was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Wood; niece, Joyce LaTourette; and nephew, Thomas Wood.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Roanne MacEwan, pastor of the First Congregational Church, Sidney, officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney. Friends are invited to call at their convenience Wednesday at the funeral chapel. Her family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or Defenders of Wildlife, 1101 14th N.W. Street, Room 1101,  Washington, D.C. 20005.

Louise I. Young

SCHUYLER LAKE — Miss Louise I. Young, 88, of Schuyler Lake, died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 5, 1999, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

She was born on April 14, 1911, in Schuyler Lake, a daughter of Fred and Grace (Hecox) Young.

A lifelong resident of the Schuyler Lake area, Miss Young graduated from the Richfield Springs High School and served for many years as town clerk for the town of Exeter.

She loved all animals and greatly enjoyed the company of her dogs and cats.

Miss Young is survived by one cousin, Arrie Hecox of Fly Creek; and his daughters, Mable Baker of Fly Creek and Betty Jane Smith or Toddsville.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at the home of Mable Baker, county Route 26 in Fly Creek, with the Rev. John C. Young, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Burlington, officiating. Burial will be later in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Helen McGuire

ARKVILLE — Helen (Mickey) McGuire, 67, of Arkville, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland, Fla.

She was born on Feb. 24, 1932, in Elizabeth, N.J., the daughter of Frederick Dyer and Martha Thomas.

She married Edward J. McGuire in June 1970, in Glendale. He died Aug. 27, 1971.

She was a homemaker and was a pizza maker at Ricci's Restaurant in Arkville. She also worked as a home-health aide.

She was a resident of the area since 1965, moving here from New Jersey.

She was a collector of many items from yard sales and auctions. She also enjoyed fishing.

Helen is survived by six sons, Allan and wife, Barbara Small, of Margaretville, Kenneth and wife, Jeanne Small, of Margaretville, Donald and wife, Margaret Small, of Canton, William Small of Florida, Edward Small of Grand Canyon, Ariz., and Thomas Small of Margaretville; one daughter, Karen Aponte of Lakeland, Fla.; 16 grandchildren, Cynthia, Cassandra and Miranda Small of Florida, Celia Small of Grand Canyon, Ariz., Tamara, Stephanie, Donald, Angela and Tyler Small of Canton, Andrew and Mary Small of Margaretville, Jennifer and David Aponte of Florida and Joshua, Matthew, Melissa of Margaretville; and her longtime friend, Jean Goodman.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Robert Engelhardt officiating.

Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Terry Lee Hard

MASONVILLE — Terry Lee Hard, 50, of Masonville, passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at home with her family.

She was born May 7, 1949, in Sidney, to Dale L. and Lela Meyer Anderson.

Terry married Jack Hard Sr. on May 31, 1969, in Sidney.

She was employed as a cashier for the Quickway Foodstore in Masonville.

Terry was a member of the Masonville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. "Her life and heart touched many people."

Terry is survived by her loving husband, Jack Hard Sr. of Masonville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Patti Anderson of Clifton Park and Jack and Kim Hard of Bainbridge; daughter and son-in-law, Kristal and Marc Greco of Masonville; four grandchildren, Kyle and Savannah Hard and Shauna and Victoria Anderson; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Rose and Dale McEwan of Sidney, Gayle and Jim Burke of Hartwick, Jinx and Dick Williams of Sherburne, Rox Ann Charles of Sidney and Kela and Daniel Charles of Sidney Center; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, officiating.

At the family's request there will be no visitation.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Terry's name to the American Cancer Society, 5 Oak Ave., Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc. Sidney.

Max Brownell Jr.

GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. — Max Eugene Brownell Jr. "Brownie," 65, of 1158 Alpine Circle, Green Valley, Ariz., died Friday, Dec. 3 1999, in his home after a period of illness.

He was born Feb. 1, 1934, to Max E. and Alice L. (Mathewson) Brownell of New Berlin, N.Y.

Max attended South New Berlin School.

He married Bernice Margaret Wightman on Dec. 2, 1951.

Max lived in the upstate area of New Berlin and South Edmeston and was a supervisor at T.A.C.O. of Sherburne, N.Y., for 16 years then to Simmons Precision of Norwich, N.Y., for 15 years until his relocation, for health reasons, to Green Valley in 1993.

Max was an avid hunter, bowler and golfer.

Max is survived by his wife, Bernice M. Wightman Brownell of Green Valley, Ariz.; six children, Wayne Brownell, Nancy Coleman of New Berlin, N.Y., Terry Brownell of Edmeston, N.Y., Dale Brownell of New York City and Connie Holt and Donna Gulley of Green Valley, Ariz.; three sisters, Mildred Card of Lowville, N.Y., Beatrice Crowell of Atlanta, Ga., and Sharon "Penny" Brownell of New Berlin, N.Y.; and one brother, Clarence "Red" Brownell of New Berlin, N.Y. Max is also survived by 14 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Debra A. Grant of New Berlin, N.Y., and a brother, Alfred Brownell of South New Berlin, N.Y.

A memorial service is to be planned in the spring when the interment of ashes is possible at Gazlay Cemetery, South Edmeston, N.Y.
