Lloyd John Pegg

MORRIS — Lloyd John Pegg, 77, of Morris, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

He was born in the town of New Lisbon on May 24, 1922, the son of Ira and Edna (Swaine) Pegg.

He married Gladys Sammis in Inwood on March 26, 1944.

He was a well-known area dairy farmer and also operated his own trucking and custom farm work business.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Morris and also the Eastern Milk Producers Corp.

He was a avid hunter and enjoyed helping his friends and was always available to fix that tractor or give advice to a friend in need. He was also available for a heated game of pitch with his father, Ira, his brother, Maurice, and his friend, Grant Prindle.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, the former Gladys Sammis, of 551/2 years; his son, John Pegg, and his wife, Pat, of New Lisbon; three daughters, Barbara Bellott of Anchorage, Alaska, Janet Borchardt and her husband, Randy, of Marina,  Calif., and Paula Cone and her husband, Tom, of Charleston Four Corners; a sister, Wanda Middlemast of Oneonta; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, Edna and Ira Pegg, and a brother, Maurice Pegg.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. J. Mark Norlund officiating. Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday and one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

The family of Lloyd Pegg would like to express a very special thanks to the staff of Chase Nursing Home for their love and care.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Chase Nursing Home in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Helen C. Phillips

ONEONTA — Mrs. Helen C. Phillips, 89, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born May 2, 1910, in Amsterdam, the daughter of George and Jessie (Stern) Clark.

Helen was a resident of Albany most of her life, having moved to Oneonta in 1988 to be with her daughter, Susan Thomas Mancke.

She was an elementary and reading teacher all of her life at the Guilderland Central School District.

She enjoyed children and was very fond of flowers and poetry as well as reading. While in Oneonta, Helen attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

Helen was predeceased by her husband, Paul H. Phillips, in 1988, and by her son-in-law, Alvan Hartley Thomas, in 1995.

Helen is survived by three sons, Clark Phillips and his wife, Susan Tyler, of New Brunswick, Canada, Ardison and his wife, Susan Phillips, of Oceana,  Calif., and Michael Phillips of Los Angles,  Calif.; one daughter, Susan Thomas Mancke and her husband, "Hap" Mancke, of Oneonta; one cousin, Millie Sutter of Amsterdam; six grandchildren, Heather Carter and her husband, Jim, of Maryland, Mary Abigail Thomas of Ithaca, John Thomas of Oneonta, Bailey Phillips of Oceana,  Calif., Roberta Principle of Connecticut and Debbie Tyler of the state of Maryland.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at St. Mary's Cemetery, Amsterdam.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to the American Red Cross, 400 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Helen C. Phillips.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, Monday evening, Dec. 13, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Renee S. Covey

WALTON — Renee S. (Closs) Covey, 46, of 6 Benton Ave., Walton, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 8, 1999, at her home after a long illness.

She was born on Aug. 17, 1953, in Walton to Elton "Slim" and Clarbelle (Gray) Closs Sr., who survives her.

She was an assistant counselor at Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, a former employee of the Delaware County Countryside Care Center and a member of the Plymouth Church.

Besides her parents, Elton "Slim" and Clarbelle (Gray) Closs, she is survived by her husband, Donald T. Covey; three children, Jeremy and Brenda Miller and Damon Covey and Dana Covey; two grandchildren, all of Walton; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Paul Closs of Walton and Ken and Doreen Closs of New Jersey; and special friends, Kim and Jamey.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Plymouth Church, Walton/Franklin Road, Walton, with the Rev. Joseph Bokel, pastor of her church, officiating.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to: Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 or Plymouth Church, Walton/Franklin Road, Walton, N.Y. 13856.

Edwin Lynes

HOLLY HILL, Fla. — Edwin Lynes, 90, of Holly Hill, Fla., formerly of Westford, N.Y., passed away Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999.

He was born to John and Louise (Gano) Lynes on Dec. 31, 1908.

He married Edna Wright in 1931, and celebrated 68 years of marriage in January.

He attended and graduated from Westford High School in 1929.

He was a bus driver, custodian and bus mechanic in Schenevus School District for about 40 years. He also ran the Schenevus Bus Garage.

He was a former member of Westford Fire Department, and at one time served as Westford town clerk and councilman.

He was a member of St. Timothy Episcopal Church of Westford.

After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Florida.

He was predeceased by his wife, Edna; a son, Norman; and a sister, Margaret Willig.

Edwin is survived by a daughter, Sydney Lynes; one grandson; five granddaughters; a daughter-in-law, Jackie Lynes; and six great-grandchildren; and several cousins.

He will be remembered for his wit and humor, his love of friends and generosity and will be sadly missed.

Cremation took place in Florida, where a service was held for him and his wife at the Grace Episcopal Church in Port Orange, Fla.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Westford St. Timothy Church.

Charles Benedict

UNADILLA — Charles A. Benedict, 79, of 17 Main St., Unadilla, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at the New York State Veterans' Home, Oxford.

He was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Unadilla, the son of Raic and Helen (Rumpff) Benedict.

He was married to Bertha Field, June 14, 1941, in Unadilla.

Charles was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Chicago and the USS Mobile. He was a survivor of the USS Chicago after the ship went down in the Philippine islands.

He was a lifelong resident of Unadilla and for many years owned and operated Benedict's Oil Company of Oneonta.

He was a member of the Oneonta Elks Lodge No. 1312, Joyce-Bell No. 578 American Legion of Unadilla and the Sidney Golf and Country Club and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.

Charles is survived by his wife, Bertha F. Benedict of Unadilla; a sister, Beth A. Heimer of Albany; two nephews, Thomas R. Batters of Oneida and Robert C. Batters of Atlanta, Ga.; two nieces, Helen A. Rowley of Schenectady and Mary Jo Batters of St. Petersburg, Fla.; also cousins and three close friends, Dick Arrandale of Sidney, Howard Farnum of Boston and George Yanchek of Palm Coast, Fla.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Unadilla, with the Rev. Richard H. Frye officiating.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church or the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Gregory Perrone

ONEONTA — Gregory M. Perrone, 64, of Oneonta, passed away Dec. 10, 1999, at Fox Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born Feb. 2, 1935, in Yonkers, the son of Dr. Ferdinand and Rosemary (Meehan) Perrone.

On Oct. 8, 1960, Mr. Perrone was married to the former Janice Bigelow in Oneonta.

Mr. Perrone was a United States Navy veteran, having served from 1955 until 1959. He was a lifelong area resident, having moved to Oneonta at age 8, and graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 1953.

He attended Hartwick College prior to and following his tour of duty with the Navy.

Most recently, Mr. Perrone was the office manager for JMF Contractors, having semi-retired in 1997. He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta and a former member of the Oneonta Rotary Club.

Greg had a love for the ocean and enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by his wife at home; one son, Vincent Perrone of Oneonta, and a daughter and her husband, Veronica and Dr. Harold Pollick of Ann Arbor, Mich.; two granddaughters, Rebecca and Hannah of Ann Arbor; a sister-in-law, Wilma Perrone; and a nephew, Gregory of Endwell.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco officiating.

Burial will be later in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons. There will be no calling hours. Those who wish may make contributions to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Kathleen McIntyre

RICHMONDVILLE — Mrs. Kathleen Sperbeck McIntyre, 79, of East Main Street, died Friday, Dec. 10, at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill after being stricken at her residence.

Mrs. McIntyre was born Nov. 4, 1920, in Richmondville and was a lifelong area resident. She was the daughter of the late Edgar and Asenath (France) Sperbeck.

Mrs. McIntyre was a graduate of the Richmondville Central School. She was employed as a seamstress at the Ace Glove Factory in Richmondville for many years before retiring.

Mrs. McIntyre was a member of the United Methodist Church of Richmondville and the Richmondville Methodist Women's Christian Society. She was also a member of the Seward Valley Grange for many years.

Her husband, Fred McIntyre, predeceased her on Nov. 17, 1989.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Grey of Fulton; a son, Fred F. McIntyre of Milford, N.H.; three sisters, Adella Osterhout of Hudson, Leora Ridgeway of Worcester and Eva Illingsworth of Fairlawn, N.J.; a brother, Melvin Sperbeck of Richmondville; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Burial will be in the Richmondville Rural Cemetery. Friends may call from 7-8:30 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Richmondville Volunteer Rescue and Ambulance Squad, Richmondville, N.Y. 12149.

Theodora Bowman

COOPERSTOWN — Theodora Bowman, 93, died Wednesday at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born in Wells County, Ind.

She was a homemaker and a drapery maker with Sears. She was a member of Crescent Avenue United Methodist Church. She loved to crochet and was a great cook.

Survivors include her daughter, Vera McLaughlin of Otego; granddaughter, Mindy Potts of Niverville; grandsons, Shawn McLaughlin of Wilkes Barre, Pa., Robin Starrett of Indiana and Tim Winchester of Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Bowman, in 1991 and a son, Vern Bowman, in 1979.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at D.O. McComb and Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Avenue, Fort Wayne.

Calling hours will be from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Memorials can be made to Crescent Avenue United Methodist Church.

John Christensen

WEST ONEONTA — John Christensen, 83, of West Oneonta died Saturday evening, Dec. 11, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born July 10, 1916, in Brooklyn, the son of Christian and Catherine (Burke) Christensen.

John married the former Barbara Patten on Sept. 5, 1942, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta. She survives him.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II.

John was a lifelong area resident. He had worked for and was affiliated with Medi-Coach, Oneonta, and prior to that with Lynn Coach for many years.

John is survived by his wife, Barbara Christensen of West Oneonta; two sons, David Christensen of Oneonta and John M. Christensen of Oneonta; one sister, Kate Davis of Lakemont; four grandchildren, Jill Christensen, Amanda Christensen, Heath Christensen and Christian Christensen. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Stephen Christensen, who died Jan. 6, 1989.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. A chaplain from American Legion Post 259 of Oneonta will officiate.

Mr. Christensen will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home private vault to await spring burial in the West Oneonta Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Philip W. Fairbairn

DELANSON — Philip W. Fairbairn, 48, of Delanson died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, in the town of Andes.

He was born Nov. 26, 1951, in the town of Andes, the son of Lester Fairbairn and Gladys Brisbane.

He married Deborah Friedman on July 13, 1974, at St. James Episcopal Church, Lake Delaware.

For 25 years, he worked for General Electric, in the Research and Development Center on River Road, Schenectady.

Before moving to Delanson he lived in the town of Andes.

He was a member of the Whitney Club at GE. He was happy being outdoors, either fishing or just enjoying nature.

He graduated from Andes Central School. He attended the State University College at Potsdam and graduated from Schenectady Community College while employed at GE.

Philip is survived by his wife, Deborah Fairbairn of Delanson; his mother, Gladys Fairbairn of Andes; two brothers, Oscar Fairbairn of Missouri and Timothy Fairbairn of Andes; two sisters, Margo Newton of Valley Falls and Alma Reynolds of Andes; also by nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.

Following cremation there will be a committal service at the Shavertown Cemetery, Andes, at the convenience of the family. There will be a calling hour at the Advent Christian Church from 9 a.m., Tuesday until service time at 10 a.m.

Memorial gifts in Philip's memory may be made to American Cancer Society, Schenectady County Human Society or the alcohol or recovery program of one's choice. Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
