Alverna Hilsinger

OXFORD — Alverna "Tiny" Hilsinger, 86, of Sidney passed away Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

She was born to the late Andrew and Leona (Payne) DuBois on May 25, 1913, in Ashland.

Tiny married Carson Tobey. He predeceased her in June 1950. She lateer married David Hilsinger on Dec. 9, 1950. He predeceased her on Aug. 30, 1971.

Tiny was the former owner and operator of Tiny's Inn, Maryland.

She was a past member of the Moose Lodge in Oneonta, a past member of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney and a "Good Friend of Bill W. and Dr. Bob."

Tiny is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Jake Delay of Sidney; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Barbara Tobey of Kingston; four grandchildren, Theresa and Vince Baker of Sidney, David and Barbara Delay of Sidney, Stacey Tobey of Kingston and Brent Tobey of Kingston; six great-grandchildren, Brittany, Courtni, Trenton and Ashland Baker, and Kelsey Ann and Jacob Delay; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 1 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Dr. David Wood, pastor of the West Bainbridge Baptist Church, officiating.

Friends may call Tuesday, Dec. 14. The family will be in attendance from noon to 1 p.m.

Burial will be in Colliersville Cemetery, Cooperstown Junction, in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Thelma N. Wilsey

MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho — Thelma N. Wilsey, 66, of Mountain Home, Idaho, and formerly of East Worcester passed away Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, Boise, Idaho.

She was born on June 22, 1933, in Chateaugay, the daughter of Frank and Kathleen (Coolidge) Hill. She married Ralph Wilsey.

Thelma spent her life helping others. She enjoyed collecting owl figurines, doing searchword puzzles and spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church, Mountain Home, Idaho.

Survivors are two daughters, Kathleen and Thomas Nigro of East Worcester and Coralynn and Brian VanNatten of Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho; six grandchildren, Anthony, Amanda and Alexandra Nigro of East Worcester and Chanel, Ciara and Chavon VanNatten of Mountain Home, Idaho; three sisters, Phyllis Hill of Claverack, Violet and Bill Wolfe of Punxsutawney, Pa., and Barbara Salanco of Nashville, N.C.; one brother, Philip and Norma Stone of Canastota; and many nieces and nephews.

Her mother, father and two brothers preceded her.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Summers Funeral Home, Mountain Home, Idaho. Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial service to celebrate Thelma's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Richmondville.

A. Joseph Sawyer

EAST WORCESTER — A. Joseph Sawyer, 57, of East Worcester, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at his home.

He was born Feb. 26, 1942, in Worcester, the son of Harold and Georgia (McClintock) Sawyer.

He married Sharon L. Martin.

Joe was the proprietor of Sawyer Drilling in East Worcester

Joe was a member of Worcester United Methodist Church, the Worcester Wheelers Square Dancing Club, and was once the superintendent of the Worcester Highway Department.

Joe enjoyed flying, boating and riding his motorcycle.

Joe is survived by his wife, Sharon L. Sawyer of East Worcester; daughter, Cindy, and her husband, Eric Middleton, and their son, Court, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; stepchildren, Frank and his wife, Jeanette Robinson, and their children, Sarah and Ethan, of Worcester, John and his wife, Donna Robinson, and their children, Stephanie, Miranda and Christopher, of East Worcester, Ken Robinson of Worcester and Kathy and her husband, Doug Shutters, and their daughters, Jessica and Jennifer, of Maryland; brothers, Larry and his wife, Donna Sawyer, of Oneonta and Jerry and his wife, Patricia Sawyer, of Decatur; and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester, with the Dr. Rev. George I. Goodwin, of East Worcester, officiating.

Burial will take place at the East Worcester Lower Cemetery, state Highway 7, East Worcester.

There will no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Joe to the Catskill Area Hospice Inc. and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905-4704.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Donald L. Cortese

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Donald L. Cortese, 77, formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at the Hospice Center of Martin and St. Lucie, Stuart, Fla.

He was born Oct. 13, 1922, in Maryland, N.Y., the son of Daniel and Edith (Bostwick) Cortese.

He attended Cooperstown Central School and served in the United States Air Force as a staff sergeant in New Guinea, Guam and the Philippines, from 1940-1945.

He married Jeanne A. (VanWoert) on Nov. 22, 1945.

Before his retirement years, Don and his family resided in Oneonta, N.Y. He was an employee of the Oneonta Sales Co. for 14 years, a member of the B.P.O.E. #1312, the Oneonta Country Club and St. Mary's Church.

After moving to Florida, he was employed for a number of years by Sandpiper Bay Club Med in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Don is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Jeanne A. Cortese; his son, Terry L. Cortese, and wife, Sharon A. Cortese, of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; a brother, Joseph Cortese of Cooperstown, N.Y.; a sister, Katherine Carman of Oneonta, N.Y.; a half-brother, Raymond Nichols of Caldwell, Idaho; a grandson, Daniel Scott Cortese, and his wife, Laura Cortese, of Tamarac, Fla.; a granddaughter, Shanna Lyn Cortese of Coral Springs, Fla.; a great-grandson, Daniel Scott Cortese II of Tamarac, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Virginia Cortese of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

Don will be remembered by his family and friends for his love of the game of golf.

Cremation took place in Florida. The family will hold a private memorial service on the grounds of the Oneonta County Club in the summer of 2000.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to: Hospice Center of Martin and St. Lucie Inc., 2030 Southeast Ocean Blvd. Stuart, Fla. 34996.

John Christensen

WEST ONEONTA — John Christensen, 83, of West Oneonta, died Saturday evening, Dec. 11, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born July 10, 1916, in Brooklyn, the son of Christian and Catherine (Burke) Christensen.

John married the former Barbara Patten on Sept. 5, 1942, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta; she survives him.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II.

John was a lifelong area resident and had worked and was affiliated with Medi-Coach, Oneonta and before that with Lynn Coach for many years.

John is survived by his wife, Barbara Christensen of West Oneonta; two sons, David Christensen of Oneonta and John M. Christensen of Oneonta; one sister, Kate Davis of Lakemont; four grandchildren, Jill Christensen, Amanda Christensen, Heath Christensen and Christian Christensen; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Stephen Christensen, who died Jan. 6, 1989.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. A chaplain from American Legion Post 259 of Oneonta will officiate.

Mr. Christensen will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home private vault to await spring burial in the West Oneonta Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Tuesday evening, Dec. 14, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Rick Graham

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. — Richard A. "Rick" Graham, 40, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born March 3, 1959, in Margaretville, N.Y., the son of Clarence and Mona Graham.

He married Susan Schlager in November 1986.

After graduating from Margaretville Central School in 1978, Rick enlisted in the Navy. Upon completing his military duties, he moved to Pompano Beach, Fla., where he raised his family and became manager of a major aerosol company.

Rick is survived by his wife, Susan Schlager-Graham of Treasure Island, Fla.; three daughters, Sherry and Melissa of Treasure Island, Fla., and Jessica of Woodbridge, Va.; one granddaughter, Kylee of Woodbridge; his loving mother, Mona Graham-Ford, and stepfather, Douglas Ford, of Roxbury, N.Y.; a sister, Vicki Graham-Shultis, and her family, daughter, Samantha, and fiance, Ed Morissette of Otego, N.Y.; a brother and his family, Larry, LeighAnn and Kaila Graham of Chesapeake, Va.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Clarence Graham; paternal grandparents, Willard and Mary Graham; and maternal grandparents, Hillis and Juanita Fairbairn.

Rick loved the water and the outdoors.

It was his wish to be cremated and his ashes scattered on the shore of his favorite fishing place.

There will be no funeral service or calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish can make a contribution in Rick's name to the Woodside Hospice, 6770 North 102nd Ave., Pinellas Park, Fla. 33782.

Walter C. Thomson

GRAND GORGE — Walter C. Thomson, 78, of Yale Road, Grand Gorge, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Jan. 25, 1921, in Barre, Vt., the son of George C. and Rosina (Reed) Thomson.

He married Evelyn Bricks on Feb. 3, 1946, in Elmont. Evelyn died June 2, 1997.

Walter was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II. He moved to Grand Gorge in 1978 from East Meadow, Long Island. He was a construction electrician for Local #25 IBEW in Hauppauge for 33 years until his retirement in 1983.

Walter is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Doreen and Robert Wolf of East Farmingdale and Lorraine and Steven McGahon of Davenport; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard and Trudy Thomson of Lindenhurst and Ronald Thomson of Bethpage; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 West Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Tracie Martin, of the First Presbyterian Church in Davenport, officiating. Burial will take place in the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Friends may call at their convenience on Thursday afternoon and evening from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home at which time the family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Walter's memory to the Grand Gorge Rescue Squad, Main Street, Grand Gorge, N.Y. 12434.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Constance Carter

OTEGO — Constance Mary Carter, 58, of Otego and formerly of New York City and Florida, died Dec. 12, 1999, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

She was born Oct. 17, 1941, in New York City, the daughter of Albert and Mary Carter.

Mrs. Carter had been a resident of St. Petersburg, Fla., until January 1999, when she moved to Otego to live with her daughter. She was a former medical clerk and secretary for Preferred Anesthetists of St. Petersburg, Fla., until ill health forced her retirement in 1998.

Constance is survived by one son, Victor, of New York City; one daughter, Janette Howard of Otego; five grandchildren, Megan, Christopher and Steven Howard and Victor and Angela Ortiz; a special friend, Laurie Hauck of Oneonta; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

J. Margaret Thompson

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. J. Margaret (Montgomery) Thompson, 79, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was a resident of The Meadows but originally was from Cherry Valley.

She was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Oneonta, the daughter of Arthur and Jennie (Doyle) Montgomery.

On Dec. 8, 1938, she married Harold "Pete" Thompson in Cherry Valley. He predeceased her in 1991.

Mrs. Thompson worked at the Glove Factory and the Emblem Shop in Cherry Valley.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed visiting with family and friends, crocheting, and playing cards.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Walter (Butch) and Marlene Thompson of Worcester, Ronald and Bonnie Thompson of South Valley and Jon and Jill Thompson of Richmondville; a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Sam Dubbin of Middlefield; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bertha  Johnson of East Springfield and Ellamae Christian of South New Berlin; a brother, Walter Palmer of Schenectady; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband she was predeceased by her sister, Grace Houck.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating, burial will follow in South Valley Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 16, from 2 to 9 p.m., with the family in attendance from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mrs. Thompson's memory may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, N.Y., (264-8141).

Helen Gerstheimer

BLOOMVILLE — Helen A. Gerstheimer, 88, formerly of Bloomville but most recently of Robinson Terrace, Stamford, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born July 29, 1911, in Brooklyn, the daughter of John and Helen (Kraus) Tomaszewski.

She was married to the late Michael Gerstheimer for 50 years.

She loved the country and moved to this area in 1976, where she enjoyed keeping her home, watching the birds and season's change.

She will be remembered for her charming smile and her abilities working with foods, particularly "Chicken Paprikash."

She kept in close contact with two nieces; Pam Gerstheimer of Highland Mills and Peggy Patton of Earlton; and other nephews and nieces.

A son predeceased her.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
