Mary Sovocool

ONEONTA — Mary Sovocool, 102, died Saturday evening, Jan. 8, 2000, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

Mary was born June 10, 1897, in Oneonta, the daughter of James and Fanny (Harkness) Downie.

Mary married Lewis Sovocool on June 30, 1927, in East Lansing, Mich. They were married for 52 years until his death on June 2, 1980.

Mary graduated from the Oneonta Normal School in 1917 with a degree in teaching and subsequently taught first grade in St. Johnsville, Cleveland and Ithaca.

Mary and her husband purchased the Downie family farm on Upper East Street in 1946, and Mary continued to live there until 1990.

She was the oldest member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta, having been baptized and received into church membership on May 17, 1914.

Mary is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Wilbur and Louise Sovocool of LeRoy; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Eric Gardell of Wappinger Falls; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by a son, James Sovocool; a granddaughter, Patricia Sovocool; three sisters, Dorothy Brown, Anna Russell and Ethel Glynn; and three brothers, John Downie, J. Gordon Downie and the Rev. Herbert Downie.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the pastor of her church, the Rev. C. Spencer VanGulick, officiating. Mary will be placed in the Bookhout private vault to await burial in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, from 7 to 9, at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the memorial fund at First United Presbyterian Church, 381 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Virginia West

MILFORD — Virginia West, 77, of Milford, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000.

She was born May 16, 1922, in Allaben, the daughter of Karl and Dema (Misner) Lynch of Binghamton.

She married Frederick West on Aug. 2, 1942, in Port Dickinson.

Ginny was employed as a nurse's aide at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in 1959. She later was employed by Milford Central School as cafeteria cashier for 16 years, retiring in 1977. She served many years on the local election board as an inspector and clerk.

She was a member of the Milford Methodist Church.

She belonged to a local craft club and enjoyed creating new projects, which she shared with her family and friends. Ginny was active in community activities and fund-raisers.

Ginny's home and family were her life. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by all who survive her.

She is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 57 years, Frederick West of Milford. Together they had three children who they loved more than life. Those who survive are a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and James Reynolds of Cooperstown, and two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Christine West of Milford and Richard and Deborah West of Maryland. Also surviving are five grandchildren, David Reynolds of Ithaca, Michael and Lisa Reynolds of Raritan, N.J., Jody West and Paul Woodrow of Milford, David West Jr. and Spring Crandall of Oneonta and Damon West and Heidi Weaver of Portlandville; one great-granddaughter, Madison Martin of Milford; and one great-grandson, Ryan Reynolds of Raritan, N.J.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the Milford Methodist Church. A reception will follow the service, at which time the family will greet friends and relatives.

Those who wish may contribute to the Milford Fire Department and Emergency Squad or Catskill Area Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Herman G. Curry

SCHUYLER LAKE — Herman G. Curry, 74, of county Highway 22, died on Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, in his home with his loving family at his side.

He was born on Dec. 26, 1925, in Cooperstown, son of the late George and Gladys Light Curry.

A lifelong resident of Schuyler Lake, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School.

An honorably discharged United States Air Force veteran, he served our country during World War II. He had served in Japan with the 14th Emergency Rescue Boat Squadron.

On Sept. 18, 1948, he married Shirley Brady in Waterville.

He first had worked for UNIVAC and for 20 years was an electronics technician with Mohawk Data Sciences, retiring in 1985.

He was a former member of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department and the Richfield Springs VFW Post. For several years he served as president of the Schulyer Lake Cemetery Board.

Herman loved the outdoors and used much of his leisure time hunting and fishing.

Surviving besides his wife of 51 years, Shirley; are two sons and their wives, Gregory and Maryann Curry of Milford and William and Diane Curry of Mount Vision; a daughter, Diane and her husband, Mark Thompson of Cold Brook; one sister, Ida Davis of Schuyler Lake; four grandchildren, Amy and Colleen Thompson and Justin and Melissa Curry; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

Interment will be in Schuyler Lake Cemetery later this spring. The family will receive relatives and friends Tuesday morning one hour before the funeral service, 10 to 11 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Schuyler Lake First Responders or the Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

A graveside military service will be held at the Westford Cemetery, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Eden Park Nursing Home, Activities Fund, 25 Parkway Drive, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Leo N. LaRochelle

NORWALK, Conn. — Leo N. LaRochelle, 69, of Stamford, N.Y., a former Norwalk, Conn., resident died Friday in the Albany, N.Y., Veterans Hospital.

He was the husband of Roseann Lomazzo LaRochelle.

He was born in Norwalk, Conn., on Dec. 25, 1930, son of the late Alcide and Yvette Gagne LaRochelle.

Mr. LaRochelle was the owner of Leo's Pizza Plus in Hobart, N.Y.

He was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean War, a past commander of the Frank C. Godfrey Post No. 12 of the American Legion, a former member of the Connecticut National Guard and a former Norwalk policeman. He was a member of the V.F.W., Stamford, N.Y., and a member of the Tin Can Sailors.

In addition to his wife, Mr. LaRochelle is survived by four sons, Roger LaRochelle and Robert LaRochelle, both of Stamford, N.Y., and Raymond LaRochelle and Lee LaRochelle, both of Norwalk, Conn.; two daughters, Linda Dawson and Carol Marron, both of Norwalk, Conn.; a brother, Norman LaRochelle of Norwalk, Conn.; three sisters, Teresa LaRochelle and Rita Byxbee, both of Norwalk, Conn., and Doris Caffrey of Bethel; and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, in St. Philip Church, 1 Father Conlin Place, Norwalk, Conn. Interment is private.

A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements were by the Magner Funeral Home, Norwalk, Conn.

Carol Platt

ANDES — Carol Platt, 47, of Andes, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Margaretville Hospital.

Carol was born Sept. 5, 1952, in Margaretville, the daughter of Earl and Ruth Knapp Samuels.

She married David Platt an July 27, 1985, in Margaretville.

A lifelong area resident, Carol attended Andes Central School.

She worked as a baker at the former Arkville Bakery and later at the Margaretville Bakery. She also worked as an aide at Margaretville Hospital as well as caring for people in their homes.

Carol enjoyed quilting and gardening as well as baking and cooking.

She is survived by her husband, David, of Andes; three sons, Jerry Fronckowiak of Margaretville, Joseph Fronckowiak of Andes and Michael Platt of Margaretville; three daughters, Tressa Fronckowiak or Andes, Heidi Platt of Andes and Melody Platt of Oneonta; and a sister, Laurie Andrews of Andes. Also surviving are five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister officiating.

Friends may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home on Tuesday, when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials to the Andes Emergency Squad in the name of Carol Platt would be appreciated.

Robert J. Dibble

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — Robert Julian Dibble, 82, of 1510 Riverdale Ave., Sheboygan, Wis., died at his home on Sunday morning, Jan. 9, 2000.

Robert was born on Nov. 29, 1917, in Oneonta, N.Y., a son of the late LeRoy and Edith (Lockwood) Dibble.

He attended schools in New York and on June 21, 1947, married the former Georgia Margaritis in Paterson, N.J.

For many years, Bob was a quality-control person being employed by Alcoa and also Tecumseh Products.

He served his country in the Army during World War II.

He enjoyed hiking at Terry Andrae State Park, camping and traveling. He loved his dogs and was an active member at the Senior Center and a volunteer at the Salvation Army.

Survivors include his wife, Georgia; his son, Robert (Rebecca Zastrow) Dibble; his daughter, Janice Dibble; two grandsons, Benjamin Dibble and Michael Dibble; and a sister, Evelyn Flammer.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Guy Dibble.

A funeral service will be held for Robert on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Ramm-Ziegler-Novak-Rettke Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, with the Rev. Glenn Powers officiating. Entombment will take place in Gardens of Peace Mausoleum. Friends may call at the funeral home, 1535 South 12th Street, on Wednesday, from noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m.

A memorial fund has been established in Robert's name for the Salvation Army.

Pierre Zimmer Jr.

HOBART — Pierre Zimmer Jr., 68, of Hobart, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Delaware County Countryside Care in Delhi.

He was born Dec. 21, 1931, in Brooklyn, the son of Pierre and Marcel Zimmer. He was single.

Mr. Zimmer came to Hobart in 1983 from New York City and resided at Project Independence Inc. in Hobart.

He was an assembly worker in packaging at A.R.C. in Hamden.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at the Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus in South Kortright, with the Rev. Joseph Cebula officiating. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will take place in the spring at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Project Independence Inc., Main Street, Hobart, N.Y. 13788.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Paul Woodward

WALTON — Paul Woodward, 69, of Walton, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at Binghamton General Hospital, Binghamton.

He was born March 19, 1930, in Ravenna, Ohio, the son of Richard and Sophia (Turpin) Woodward.

Survivors are a daughter, Gail Urso of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a son, Robert Woodward of Phoenix, Ariz. His close neighbors and friends will miss him.

Mr. Woodward was a veteran of the United States Navy and worked in New York City as a stationary engineer in Building Maintenance.

Memorial Mass will take place on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Delhi, with Fr. Joseph Manerowski officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery following the service.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Grace Irene Plants

WILLMAR, Minn. — Grace Irene Plants, 92, most recently of Willmar, Minn., and formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at the Bethesda Heritage Nursing Home in Willmar, Minn.

She was born on Aug. 21, 1907, in Cortland, N.Y., the daughter of Ira W. and Julia L. (Underwood) Smith.

She married the Rev. Russell Plants on April 17, 1933. He died on Sept. 28, 1986.

Mrs. Plants attended the Cortland High School, Beulah Heights Bible School for one year, and Bethel Bible School for two years, from which she graduated in 1929.

In October of 1929, she sailed to Egypt with Miss Lillian Trasher, who was called "Mother of the Nile," because of the orphanage she founded in Assuit, Upper Egypt. Mrs. Plants worked in this orphanage as a missionary.

In 1931, she met the Rev. Russell Plants in Cairo, Egypt, and returned to the United States. In 1936, they returned to Egypt, where they served as missionaries until 1938, when they had to return to the United States because of the Rev. Plants' health, which was affected adversely by the climate of Egypt.

They moved to Oneonta in 1938, and founded the Gospel Tabernacle (which is now the Assembly of God Church) in 1939.

In 1990, Grace, moved to New London, Minn., to live with her daughter, Mary Louise Hendricksen.

In July of 1995, she entered Bethesda Heritage Nursing Home in Willmar, Minn., where she resided until her death.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Roberta and James Coulter of Sun Lakes, Ariz., Donald G. Plants of Oneonta, Mary Louise and Bernie Hendricksen of Willmar, Minn., Gordon R. Plants of Oneonta and Esther Ruth Brior of Denver,  Colo.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rose Haglund of Schenectady; along with nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister and two brothers.

A service to celebrate the life of Grace Irene Plants will be held on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Assembly of God Church with the Rev. John Greiner officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours, and memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Assembly of God Church.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
