Helen Jean Kilmer, age 77, of 35 James Street, Saranac Lake, died Friday, July 14, 2006 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born in Gabriels, New York on July 15, 1928, she was the daughter of George and Helen (Gonyea) Fountain. She married Charles Warren Kilmer on April 21,
1947 in Bloomingdale, New York. He predeceased her in January 8, 1991. Mrs. Kilmer was a life long resident of the area and had worked as rural route postal mail carrier for many years until her retirement in 1993. She was an avid bowler for many years and loved to garden. She is survived by one son Ralph Kilmer and his wife Christine of Gettysburg, PA; two daughters Eva Guenther and husband Steve of Hadley, NY, and Joyce Duquette and husband David of Saranac Lake, NY; one brother Clayton Fountain of Gabriels, NY and three sisters Joyce Hadynski, Valerie Fountain, and Brenda Darrah all of Gabriels, NY; ten grandchildren James, Jocelyn, Jacqueline, and Jason Kilmer, Adam, Austin, and Christopher Guenther, Ashley and Christopher Zupp, Rachelle and Tiffany Duquette, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother and one brother Chauncey Fountain. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Monday, July 17, 2006 from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday July 18, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Merrillsville Cemetery in Loon Lake. Donald Jessie, age 59, formerly of 14 Kiwassa Road, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at the Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid. Born in Saranac Lake, New York on September 20, 1946, he was the son of Charles and Mildred (Austin) Jessie. Mr. Jessie attended school and grew up in Saranac Lake. In 1966 he moved to Plattsburgh where he repaired business machines. He moved to Syracuse in 1972 where he pursued the same occupation. In 1977 he moved to  Pennsylvania where he lived for 23 years. He became disabled and moved back to Saranac Lake in 2000 where he lived at 14 Kiwassa Rd. until December 2005 when he moved to Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid. He is survived by his mother Mildred Jessie of Tupper Lake, two brothers Charles Jessie of Saranac Lake and Francis Jessie of Cortland Manor, NY; two sisters Linda Manchester of Paul Smiths, Nancy Higgins of Burlington, NJ, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Charles Jessie. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Thursday, July 13, 2006 from 2PM -4PM and 7PM - 9PM. Following cremation interment services will take place at the convenience of the family. Della West VanCour, age 87, formerly of Bloomingdale, NY, died Friday, July 7, 2006 at the Our Lady of Mercy Nursing Home in Guilderland, NY where she had been a resident since 2003. Born in Altona, New York on March 06, 1919, she was the daughter of Henry and Anna (Menard) West. She married Ernest VanCour on April 19, 1942 in Altona, NY. He predeceased her on May 6, 1994. Mrs. VanCour during her lifetime had lived in Malone, Bloomingdale, Rochester and Albany, NY. She had worked on the farm with her husband in Bangor and in Bloomingdale for many years until their retirement in 1969. While living in Bloomingdale, NY Mrs. VanCour had also worked at the American Management Association in Saranac Lake for several years. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, making stuffed animals and was a marvelous cook. She is survived by four daughters Donna Martin of Palmyra, NY, Norma Camp of McEwen, TN, Teena Miller of Albany, NY, and Sheri VanCour of Albany, NY; 12 Grandchildren; 7 Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two sisters, Ruby Burdo of Plattsburgh, NY, and Edith VanNortwick of Saranac Lake, NY. She was predeceased by her father and
loving mother, one son Terry VanCour, one brother and two sisters. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Monday, July 10, 2006 from 1:00 Pm to 2:00 PM. A funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake. DAVID EDWARD "Dave” Roberts, 65, of St. Petersburg, Florida died Saturday, June 24, 2006 at the Palms of Pasedena Hospice Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on May 4, 1941. He was the oldest son of George Milton and Lillian (Hyde) Roberts. In September of 1965 he married Priscilla Dawn Conklin. The couple resided in Springville, N. Y. before moving to Florida in 1966. In 1969 he joined the St. Petersburgh Fire Department. In 1970 he was one of the first people to graduate from the Firefighter Paramedic School. He served his country and that city for 26 ½ years retiring in 1996. He received numerous commendations, throughout his years of service for such things as excellence and bravery above and beyond the call of duty. He began his career with Fire Station 1 and ended it at Fire Station 13. He worked as a paramedic on Bayflight, a helicopter high emergency transportation connected with Bayfront Medical Center. He also worked in the Bayfront Trauma Center. He served on the fire departments Scuba Diving Rescue Team. He was Chief of Paramedics for St. Petersburg Fire Department for several years until health issues and stress related to his responsibilities in that 64 square mile city caused him to decide to step down to Lt. He was the fire and safety director for boat races at Lake Maggiore and in downtown St. Petersburg. For many years he worked at the Daytona 500 NASCAR races as a paramedic, eventually becoming Coordinator of Emergency Services for the event. He had a lifelong passion for airplanes and flying. He loved camping, boating, skydiving, car races, children, animals and nature.. He was an advocate for endangered wildlife including Florida's Manatee. For many years he worked a second job as a marine mechanic in St. Petersburg. He is survived by his wife of 40 years; a daughter, Marsha D. (Mrs. Christopher) Laycox of St. Petersburg; a sister, Deborah (Mrs. Christopher) Lambert of Davie, Fla.; a brother, Donald of Denton, Tx.; three maternal cousins, Richard Storck of Raleigh, N.C.;, Robert Storck of Greenville, N.C. and Joan (Hyde) Lowndes of Bloomingdale, N.Y. and several nieces and nephews including Edward S. Lowndes of Bloomingdale and many extended family members throughout the Tri-Lakes area. He was predeceased by his parents; his maternal grandparents Mabel and Frank Hyde of Bloomingdale; his maternal uncle and aunt William F. and Lillian M. Hyde of Bloomingdale; and his maternal aunt Mabel (Hyde) Storck of Charlotte, N.C.. Funeral arrangements are through the Anderson McQueen Funeral Home, 38th St., St. Petersburg. Following cremation a memorial service will be held at Grace Gospel Church of Tampa Bay, 9021 U.S. Highway 19 North, St. Petersburg, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 9th. The Fire Department memorial tribute will be held from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m.. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to hospice.

Mary R. Heller, age 69, of 181 Thomasville Road, AuSable Forks, died Saturday, November 11, 2006 at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY . Born in Akron, Ohio on December 03, 19 36, she was the daughter of Bernard and Ellen (Raffensberger) Roetzel. Mary taught at both Holy Name School and Our Lady of Grace Academy. She fostered numerous children for Social Services, and loved her life in the pine trees. Mary loved all her pets, especially her Great Danes and Collies. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and watching birds at her feeders. Mary leaves many who loved her, including, five daughters Avi Heller and Pat Holstrom of Virginia, Holly and Jerry Ross of Peru, NY; Ruth Heller and Beth Bowles of  Pennsylvania; Rebi and Patrick Romeo and Shantel Heller both of Vermontville, NY; three grandchildren Maryssa, Ravi, and Cassidy; one brother Nick of Maryland, and one sister Barbara of Maryland. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and one sister Patsy. Mary’s family will receive well-wishers who are unable to attend her funeral at Mary's house on Friday November 24, 2006 from 4 PM -7PM. A mass of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 11:00 AM Holy Name Church in AuSable Forks with Rev. P.T. Allen officiating. Mary’s family invites friends and neighbors to a Celebration of her Life Party immediately following at Mary’s house at 181 Thomasville Road, AuSable Forks, NY. On November 14, 2006 the Lord sent an angel down to take one of his children home. Howard Myatt, son of Howard H and Bertha E (Roberts) Myatt came into this world on August 16 1940, with an unbeatable will and a desire to make a difference: AND HE DID. Graduating from Saranac Lake High School, he enlisted in the Airforce where he met his wife Betty Worden in Shreveport  Louisiana. Upon Honorable discharge from the armed forces, he returned to Saranac Lake and became a Saranac Lake police officer while working part-time at the Lake Placid Club . He then entered into New York State Corrections and embarked upon a career that lasted 33 years, retiring as a Lieutenant. He was an avid hunter and a member of the local fish and game club, a New York State Hunter Safety Instructor, a 4-H Shooting Instructor, an NRA Rifle Instructor and a North American Hunters Association member. He had a passion for photography,motorcycles, rifle and bow hunting as well as building and operating his stables; Mt. Debar Stables. The collection of animals and friends that he met along the way were a never ending source of pride and delight for him. Among the many lives that he touched and guided, his family was his first love. He shared 41 wonderful years with his wife, Betty Myatt and three children - Howard, Bonnie and Shannon Myatt; 3 grandchildren Shandalee Myatt, Dakota Monette and Chantelle "tilly" Myatt, his sister Beverly Law and niece Judy Torak her husband Ken and son Jason.
Howard is joining his parents, Bertha and Howard H. Myatt as well as his brother Wayne Howard Myatt in the loving arms of the Lord and though our tears will fall for the loss of him, they will never wash away the memories we made together. Howard set out to make a difference in this world.....AND HE DID. Those wishing to remember Howard R. Myatt Sr. are being asked to contribute to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Dept. Rescue Squad or the Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club in care of the funeral home. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11:00AM at the First United Methodist Church in Saranac Lake with Reverend Merry Waters officiating. Burial will follow at McColloms Cemetery in Paul Smiths, NY.

Thelma M. Lewis, 87, of 89 Greenwood St., Lake Placid passed away Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born Aug. 21, 1919 in Jay, she was the daughter of Alex and Sadie (Shipman) Chabbott. She was a graduate of Au Sable Forks High School. She was the wife of Leslie Lewis. Thelma loved to play cards, especially bridge. She worked at the Greenwood Apartments as a building attendant for 16 years. She is survived by three sons: Darryl Berghorn and his wife, Leslie of Laguna Niguel,  Calif., Philip Berghorn and his wife, Betty of Tioga Center and Charles Berghorn and his wife, Kathy of Lake Placid; a daughter, Joanne Bickford and her husband, Thomas of Tupper Lake; two stepdaughters: Lynda Clinton and her husband, Thomas of Atkinson, N.H. and Marilyn Lewis and her husband, Mack Lundy of Williamsburg, Va.; several grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1994. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10 at St. Eustace Episcopal Church in Lake Placid. Burial will follow in North Elba Cemetery in Lake Placid with the Rev. Michael  Jones officiating. Donations in her memory may be made to the Les Lewis Lake Placid High School Scholarship Fund or High Peaks Hospice in her memory. The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements.

Donald R. Cote, 65, of Saranac Lake, died unexpectedly Saturday Oct. 28, 2006 at his home. Born Aug. 17, 1941 in Tupper Lake, he was the son of Louis Paul and Florence (Boyer) Cote. He graduated from Holy Ghost Academy, class of 1959. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany until being honorably discharged in 1963. In 1960, he married the former Joanne LaFave in Tupper Lake. Donald worked for the Dress Factory for several years and after a debilitating heart attack, went back to school to become an accountant. He then worked for the village of Tupper Lake until his retirement. He is survived by three sons: Richard of Massachusetts, Robert of  Texas, Lawrence “Larry” and his wife Michele of Tupper Lake; a sister, Beverly Peters of Fremont,  Calif.; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Gardner in 1987. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 in St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Tupper Lake. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Tupper Lake Honor Guard in care of the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake.

Kevin Eler, age 53, formerly of Saranac Lake and currently of Frankfort, NY, died Friday morning, November 03, 2006 at his home. Born in Tupper Lake, New York on July 03, 1953, he was the son of Resat and Natalie (Gowan) Eler. Kevin graduated from Saranac Lake Central High School in 1972. He later attended Canesius College, Stony Brook University and Columbia University for graduate studies. His varied hobbies included: education; reading and writing; Black Jack; collecting antiques, stamps and coins; photography; shooting and fishing; MENSA membership and helping others. He was also a very influential father figure throughout his younger brother Rob’s life. He is survived by two brothers, Robert Shaw of Highland, NY, and Refik Eler of Jacksonville, FL. He has one nephew, Robert Shaw III and sister-in-law, Tracy, both of Highland, NY. Numerous cousins and aunts still reside in the Sara-Placid region. His special aunt and “second mother” Norma Gowan resides in Saranac Lake. His father and mother preceded him in death. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake on Thursday November 9, 2006 from 6 to 8 PM. A graveside service will take place on Friday morning at 11:00 AM in Brookside Cemetery in Bloomingdale. Margaret " Maggie" Spencer, age 88, of Trudeau Road, Saranac Lake, died after a brief illness on Thursday, November 02, 2006 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born in April 6, 1918 in Malone, New York, she was the daughter of Josephine and Cleveland Spencer. She was one of 14 siblings. Maggie lived in Albany, St. Lawrence and Essex Counties, and Tupper Lake before moving to Saranac Lake. She worked at North Star Industries for many years until her retirement. In her younger years, Maggie enjoyed many activities in the community, particularly having a good cup of coffee and socializing with friends. Maggie was a unique person who overcame many challenges throughout her life and touched the hearts of many. A close friend, Barbara Simonson, of Saranac Lake as well as many other friends in the Tri-lakes area and the Adirondack ARC, survives her. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Monday, November 6, 2006 from 1PM - 3PM. A funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home, with Rev. Jeffery Hubbard of St. Bernard's Church officiating. Following cremation burial will take place in Pine Ridge Cemetery. Norman E. De Witt, 75, of 89 Greenwood St., Lake Placid, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born Feb. 1, 1931 in Durham, N.C., he was the son of Henry A. and Essie E. (Covar) De Witt. Norm was a veteran and served in the United States Air Force. He worked as a maître de, waiter and bartender at various restaurants in Lake Placid. He is survived by his cousin, Eirvin “Toby” De Witt of Newnan, Ga. and very close friends, Jim and Jan Vize of Lake Placid. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. David Sutcliffe, Pastor of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Saranac Lake will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Viola E. Clancy, age 88, formerly of Saranac Lake, died Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at the Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid where she had been a resident since September 2000. Born in Saranac Lake, New York on September 07, 1918, she was the daughter of Dennis and Isabell (McManus) Ducatt. Mrs. Clancy married Leo Dudley Turner, who predeceased her in 1961. She later married Louis Clancy in 1988. He predeceased her in 2000. Mrs. Clancy had been a resident of Saranac Lake for most of her life and had been employed as a waitress at the Hotel Saranac and Little Joe's. She later was employed as a clerk at the National Army Store Saranac Lake for over 20 years until her retirement. Prior to that she had lived in Tacoma, WA for 11 years. Her life was devoted to her family. She is survived by five sons Francis Turner of Saranac Lake, NY, Eroll Turner of Florida, Leo Turner of Killingworth, CT, Timothy Turner of Newark, DE, and William Turner of Tupper Lake, NY; four step-daughters Catherine Clancy of Huston,  Texas, Sally Saunders of Lakewood, WA, Joan Schuman of Eagle River, AR, and Susan Anderson of Oceanside, CA; and one sister Dolly Cheney of Saranac Lake. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her father and mother; one son Daniel Turner, and one brother Wilfred Ducatt predeceased her. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune Keough Funeral Home on Sunday October 29, 2006 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. A bible vigil service will take place at 3:45 PM Sunday afternoon. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:15 A.M. on Monday October 30 at St. Bernard's Church, with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will take place in St. Bernard's Cemetery. George C. Valette, 86, of Fulton, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006 at his summer residence in Lake Placid. Born Sept. 10, 1920 in Fulton, he was the son of Ralph and Dominico (Taranto) Volotta. Mr. Valette attended the University of Michigan, Cornell University and Syracuse University. He worked in Fulton as an attorney and was also a former mayor, city attorney and city court judge in Fulton. George was one of the founders of the Fulton softball league, a member of New York State Bar Association, Boy Scouts of America (Eagle Scout) and the American Contract Bridge Club. He is survived by one son, Mark Valette and his wife Kate of Niskayuna; one daughter, Cara Kennedy and her husband Chris of Lake Placid; one stepson, Jeff Margery and his wife Regina of Fulton; one stepdaughter, Joelle Margrey of Fulton; two brothers: Alexander Volotta of Palo Alto,  Calif. and Frederick Volotta and his wife Lois of East Sandwich Mass.; two sisters: Rosland Riveria and her husband Sam of Annapolis, Md. and Genevieve Volotta of Phoenix, Ariz; and three grandchildren: Kelly Valette and Carissa and Mia Kennedy. He was predeceased by two brothers: John and Joseph Volotta; and one sister, Mary Volotta. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27 at the funeral home. Cremation will follow. Burial will be at a later date in the North Elba Cemetery in Lake Placid.

Bradford "Jay" Connor, 62, of Vermontville, NY, died early Saturday, October, 21 2006 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, NY. Born in Saratoga Springs, NY April 23, 1944. He moved to the area in 1968 and married Karen (Sussey) Connor July 25, 1970 in Saranac Lake, NY. Mr. Connor drove taxi in his later years, for Rick's Taxi out of Lake Placid, NY. Jay was a gun enthusiast, loved hot rods, watching TV especially the History Channel, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a true family man, a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife Karen, one son Eric Connor and his wife Evie of Bloomingdale, NY, two daughters Jodi Lavery and her husband Robert of Trenton, NJ, and MacKenzie Reyell and her husband Christopher of Vermontville, NY, six grandchildren; Gabrielle and Swae Connor, Marco and Margaret Lavery, Hannah and Zachary Reyell. Mr. Connor is preceeded in death by his mother-in-law Margaret Sussey of Elizabethtown, NY. Calling hours will be Monday, October, 23, 2006 from 1:00PM to 3:00PM with a service following at 3:00PM with Father David Sutcliffe officiating, there will be a burial following the service in St. John's Cemetery in Lake Clear, NY. Those wishing to remember Bradford "Jay" Connor may make donations to the family. Arrangements are with the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake, NY.
