Ormonde Durham

VANHORNESVILLE — Ormonde Durham Jr. affectionately known as "Pops" to family, friends and others died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at 4:45 p.m. after a very brief illness.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores; sons, Art, Lance, Ronald and daughter, Virginia; as well as 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He also has two brothers, Arthur and Randolph; as well as two sisters, Carmen and Eileen; and numerous extended family.

Pops was a resident of VanHornesville, for the past 12 years and of Montclair, N.J., for the prior 66 years.

He had just turned 78 on Jan. 14, 2000.

He married Dolores (Dee) Cannon on Oct. 6, 1942, and shortly there after was drafted into the army. He served in combat in Italy and did not see his daughter, Ginger, until he returned home after World War II.

Upon returning from service Pops settled again in Montclair, N.J., where his wife, daughter and relatives all still live. Pops, then known as Pete, (Ormonde was also his Dad's name so an alternate had to be found) was employed as an auto repair mechanic. During this time the three sons mentioned above were born; the first was named Ormonde-George (but became known as Artie or Art due to Ormonde Sr.'s local presence), then Edwin-Lance (who became Lance) and finally Ronald (or Ronnie by then apparently Pete and Dee had run out of middle names).

Pops/Pete also went into business for himself as auto body and fender man in the early fifties when black-owned businesses and funding for them were even rarer than they are today. Pete pretty much worked in auto repair for several years before switching careers and becoming a roofer. Pete lived and worked in Montclair, N.J., was well-known, well-respected and most of all, well-liked by all who knew him. He remained in Montclair in roofing until he retired.

Upon retirement, Pete, who was now known as Pops, moved from Montclair, N.J., his lifelong home to VanHornesville, near where his son has a manufacturing business. Pops soon started a second career working in his son's small business Opto Generic Devices Inc. (OGD).

Although Pop's worked outdoors most of his life he adapted well to the electronics manufacturing environment and soon became an integral part of OGD's operations. In fact, though he worked in sub-assembly Pops had the title and position of "general manager" he generally managed whatever he wanted and when-if he wanted.

However Pops would like to be most remembered as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was baptized in 1979, and was a member of the Montclair, N.J., congregation and then the Fort Plain congregation. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses Pop's has the firm hope of life in the new world earthly paradise Jesus Christ promised in the Lord's Prayer. The kingdom promised by Jehovah God and his son Jesus gives Pop's family and friends the hope of seeing him again in good health and humor.

We will all miss him but know he is now at rest and in peace but very much alive in our minds and hearts but most of all Jehovah God's memory.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Fort Plain Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 165 West Grand St., (Route 5S, Palatine Bridge). The family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday from 2 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m., at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
