JoAnna Constable

BAINBRIDGE — JoAnna D. Constable of Bainbridge died unexpectedly on Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born on March 22, 1937, in Walton, the daughter of Clyde and Elma (Wilson) Dicks.

She moved from Walton to Unadilla when she was 3 years old and lived in Unadilla until she moved to Bainbridge.

She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Jeffrey and Cindy Constable of Cuero,  Texas, and Kevin and Roberta Constable of Medora, Ill.; a daughter and her husband, Sandra and Michael Barse, of Unadilla; 11 cherished grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Huntington of Sidney; and a cousin, Barb Dicks of Sherburne. She is also survived by all of her friends who she loved deeply.

As per her wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral.

Friends may join the family at her apartment at 46 South Main St., Bainbridge, on Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, for a remembrance and celebration of her life starting at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you donate to the American Lung Association, the Leukemia Society or the Cerebral Palsy Foundation in her memory.

The family thanks all of you who have touched JoAnna's life.

Pat Arena Jr.

GASTONIA, N.C. — Mr. Pat Arena Jr., age 76, of Gastonia, N.C., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Courtland Terrace Nursing Home, Gastonia, N.C.

A native of Cortland County, N.Y., he was the son of the late Pat Arena Sr. and Edith Kerner Arena, husband of the late Dorothy Evelyn Weaver Arena. Mr. Arena was also preceded in death by a one brother, Tollie, and one sister, Teresa.

Mr. Arena was a United States Navy veteran having served on a destroyer, and two repair ships in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans during World War II. He was retired from Carolina Mills in Ranlo, N.C., where he worked as a machinist.

Mr. Arena is survived by his sisters-in-law, Pansy Weaver Caldwell of Gastonia, N.C., and Mona Joy Weaver of Gastonia, N.C.; and 18 nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia, N.C., with Fr. John Allen officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at McLean Funeral Directors, Gastonia, N.C.

Memorials may be made to charity of donor's choice.

McLean Funeral Directors is serving the family of Mr. Arena.

Eva C. Fenton

NORWICH — Eva C. Fenton, 91, formerly of New Berlin and most recently a resident of the Residential Health Care Facility of Chenango Memorial Hospital, went to be with her Lord Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 19, 2000.

Born in New Lisbon, Eva grew up on the family farm in that community and attended the one-room schoolhouse a 11/2 miles from her home. It was from that schoolhouse that she completed all 12 years of her education.

Following her marriage, Eva and her husband lived for many years in Oneonta, where she worked as a cook for the River Street Restaurant for 20 years.

Following the death of her husband, Eva moved to New Berlin to make her home.

She was known for her quilting, and had made many quilts for family members over the years. She enjoyed fishing, which she would often do with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and also liked to go camping.

Above all, Eva was a warm and wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.

Born Dec. 12, 1908, Eva was the daughter of Luman and Edna (Ashley) Chase.

On Dec. 13, 1926, in Mount Upton, she married Floyd Fenton, who passed away in July 1960.

Eva is survived by her children and their spouses, Marjorie and William Boise of South New Berlin, Stanley and Daurice Fenton of Parish, Fla., Ralph and Shirley Fenton of New Berlin, and Donald and Marylyn Fenton of Summerville, S.C. Eva is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Frederick Miller of Oneonta; plus many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Eva was predeceased by her husband, Floyd Fenton; her daughter, Marion Miller; her great-granddaughter, Shawna Boise; and her four brothers, Claude, Norman, Leon and Howard Chase.

Funeral services for Eva will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel Age, interim pastor of the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin, will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Fairview Cemetery of New Berlin. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Activities Program of Chenango Memorial Hospital, care of Cheri Peck, 179 North Broad St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815, or to the hospital's Residential Health Care Facility at the same address.

Christ Hofsdal

ANDES — Christ Hofsdal, 64, of Andes, died Wednesday, Jan. 19. 2000, at home in the company of his family.

Christ was born Aug. 14, 1935, in Delhi, the son of Arne and Mabel Ingram Hofsdal.

He married Willy Antonetta Maas on May 4, 1968, in Brentwood, Long Island.

A graduate of Andes Central in 1953, Christ served in the Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He worked as an air traffic controller on Long Island for 25 years and for the past 18 years has lived in Andes, where he was a self-employed carpenter.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and woodworking.

Christ is survived by his wife, Willy, of Andes; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kristina Hofsdal of Weehawken, N.J., and Heather and Kenneth Bauer of Andes; his beloved grandson, Morgan; four brothers, Jack and Ronald of Andes, Tex of Delhi and Roger of Bloomville; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Andes United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Andes Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes on Friday when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials in the name of Christ Hofsdal to Catskill Area Hospice in Delhi or the Andes Emergency Squad will be appreciated.

Luella B. Davidson

DELHI — Luella B. Davidson, 88, of Delhi, passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born July 28, 1911, in Meridale, the daughter of Arthur and Carrie (Swartout) Bouton.

She married Ralph Davidson in Meridale on Sept. 6, 1968. He survives her, as do several cousins.

Mrs. Davidson was a homemaker in their home and will be fondly remembered as an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Delhi.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Delhi First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating.

There will be no calling hours, however, the funeral home will be open from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday preceding the service.

Burial will take place in the spring at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Delhi First Presbyterian Church or Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Martha Andersen

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ky. — Martha Mae (Petersen) Andersen, 77, of  Jeffersonville, Ky., formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at the home that she shared with her daughter, Cathy, in  Jeffersonville, Ky.

She was born in Oneonta, N.Y., on May 29, 1922.

She was a graduate of Oneonta High School. She moved to Brooklyn, where she married Robert R. Andersen. He predeceased her.

Martha is survived by her four children, Robert Andersen of Kentucky, Martha Mary Paparella of Illinois, and Richard Andersen and Cathy Smith, both of Kentucky; brothers-in-law, William and Irene Andersen of Florida and Herbert and Jean Andersen of New Jersey; sister-in-law, Gwen Chandler of Oneonta, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, in Farmingdale, Long Island. She will be laid to rest next to her husband on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000.

Elizabeth Callahan

GOODYEAR LAKE — Elizabeth Welsh Callahan, 34, of Goodyear Lake died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, in Athens Township, Pa.

She was born Feb. 26, 1965, in Oneonta, the daughter of James J. and Marie Louise (Elder) Welsh Jr.

She married Casey J. Callahan on June 7, 1998.

Elizabeth was currently employed by ARC and was assigned to the Estli House in Cooperstown.

A lifelong area resident, she was the president of the Good Person's Club, for she loved everybody.

She is survived by her husband, Casey J. Callahan of Goodyear Lake; her son, Conner James Callahan of Goodyear Lake; her brothers and sisters and their spouses, Tom and Linda Welsh of Portlandville, Jeanie and Gary Wickham of Goodyear Lake, Jim and Karen Welsh of Milford, Patrick and Sandy Welsh, Dolores and Steve Lawton and Marie and Steve Valentine, all of Goodyear Lake; her father-in-law, Harry Callahan of East Meredith; her mother-in-law, Karen Hanor of Petersburg, W.V.; two brothers-in-law, Christopher Callahan and his wife, Darleen, of Mount Vision and Curtis Callahan of East Meredith.

She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call on Sunday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 3 -6 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Contributions may be made to a Trust Fund for the benefit of Conner James Callahan, c/o ARC, att: AM or MP, P.O. Box 490, 35 Academy St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Charles J. Hamwey

ONEONTA — Charles J. Hamwey, 92, died Jan. 20 at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

He was born in Mount Vision, the son of John and Grace Hamwey. He moved to Oneonta in 1925.

He was associated with Hamwey Bros. Maple Shade Dairy, owned and operated by his father on Southside.

He was a delegate of Eastern Milk Producers for 15 years and also served on the Oneonta Town Board for several years.

He was a retired real estate broker, being in business for 48 years.

Charles was a member of Elks Club 1312 and also Audubon Club.

He was an avid fisherman.

In 1932, he married Virginia Danis. She died in 1978. He then married Vivian Munson in 1979. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta.

Surviving are his loving wife, Vivian; one son, Charles H. Hamwey of Billings, Mont.; one daughter, Sister Marion Hamwey of Africa; one granddaughter, Corinna Hamwey of Billings, Mont.; one stepdaughter, JoAnn Kohland of Oneonta; two stepgranddaughters, Kristina Abell and Kim Manellius of Oneonta; three stepgrandchildren, Dustin Freeman, Craig and Jacob Manellius of Oneonta; one brother, David, and a sister-in-law, Margaret Hamwey of Oneonta; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one grandson, Nicholas Hamwey; three sisters, Florence Pappas and Margaret and Martha Hamwey and two brothers, Lincoln Hamwey and  Washington Hamwey.

There will be no calling hours.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Louise M. Danzi

VESTAL — Louise M. Danzi, 85, most recently of Vestal and formerly of Oneonta, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at the Vestal Nursing Home.

She was born June 1, 1914, in Nineveh Junction, the daughter of Anthony and Caroline (Cornell) Scott.

She was married to Joseph Danzi, who predeceased her on Dec. 20, 1960.

For many years, Mrs. Danzi worked at the State University College at Oneonta, and while living in Oneonta, she was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Janet Danzi of Granite Bay,  Calif. and Dr. Tom and Betty Danzi of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Mary Ross of Oneonta, and a brother, Lawrence Scott of Oneonta; six grandchildren, Dr. Jeanne Scinto, Paul Danzi, Michael Danzi, Dr. Carolyn Danzi, Kori Anderson and Jay Danzi; three great-grandchildren, Makenzie Anderson, Christina Scinto and Isabella Danzi.

She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to USF Alzheimer's Research, c/o Dr. Michael Mullans, Rosenkamp Institute, 3515 East Fletcher Ave., Tampa, Fla. 33613.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ronald Post

ONEONTA — Ronald Post, 64, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Jan. 20, 2000, at Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Nov. 8, 1935, in Catskill, the son of Raymond and Edna Post.

He served with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Post was a graduate of Catskill High School and resided in West Palm Beach after being discharged from the Navy. He managed a men's clothing store in West Palm Beach for 18 years, moving to Oneonta in 1975.

He managed the Winans Clothing Stores in Catskill and Oneonta and for the past seven years had been manager of the Christmas Tree Shop in Cooperstown. Mr. Post was a member of the Columbus Community Church of New Berlin.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Thelma C. Wade of Bradenton, Fla., and her two sons, John Wade of East Amherst and Theodore Wade of Bradenton, Fla., and Mrs. Donna R. Hodor of West Copache and her two children, Cindy Ann Chelsen of Charlotte, N.C., and Robert Hodor of West Copache; and a close friend, Donald Fletcher of Oneonta.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen L. Reese, pastor of the Columbus Community Church, officiating.

Burial will be later in New Salem Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Those who wish may make contributions in Ron's name to the Columbus Community Church, 4311 State Highway 80, New Berlin, N.Y. 13411.

Ellis J. Bartrow

MILFORD CENTER — Ellis J. Bartrow, 55, of Milford Center died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.

He was born Aug. 15, 1944, in the Bronx, the son of Ellis and Janet Bartrow.

He married Donna Eden on June 16, 1990.

Ellis had been an area resident since 1985, moving here from Beacon.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Bartrow of Milford Center; a stepdaughter, Marie Eden of Milford Center; a son, Justin Bartrow of Milford Center; two daughters, Kimberly Peck and her husband, Steve, of Pawling and Rebecca Bartrow of Patterson; a brother and sister, Charles Leight of Virginia and Dawn Benes of Wappingers Falls; two grandchildren, Sarah and Steve Peck of Pawling; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Gerald and Robert Bartrow and Francis (Corky) Dakin.

A funeral service will be held Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at 3 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen Fournier, pastor of the Milford Center Community Bible Church, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to service time on Monday.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
