Walter E. Eells

WALTON — Dr. Walter E. Eells of Walton died on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton at the age of 97. He had been in declining health after suffering a heart attack in December 1997.

Walter Eells was born to Clarence and Carrie (Bump) Eells on Aug. 28, 1902, in Walton.

He graduated from Walton Central High School in 1920, and dedicated an extra year at WCS to raise his grades to earn a scholarship to Cornell University. He was successful and completed his undergraduate work in 1925. He graduated from Albany Medical College in 1929. After a one-year internship at Binghamton General Hospital he began his practice in Walton on June 1, 1930.

Dr. Eells served Walton and Delaware County for more than 60 years. His office was in his home and he owned his own hospital, Smith Hospital, which served the community for nearly 40 years. For several years in the 1970s, the hospital also functioned as a nursing home under his direction. Among his many medical achievements were: Operating and assisting many hundreds of times at Smith and Delaware Valley Hospitals, delivering 2,058 babies, and being the first doctor in Delaware County to use penicillin.

Dr. Eells' community involvement included more than 20 years of service on the Walton Central School Board, the Ogden Free Library Board and BOCES. The latter named one of their buildings after him to acknowledge his contributions. The town of Walton also honored him by choosing him "Man of the Year" in 1980.

Dr. Eells was a faithful member of the Walton Reformed Presbyterian Church, serving as trustee for many years and giving generously to church programs throughout his life. Many other charities also benefited from his generosity.

For entertainment he turned to historical novels and later in life became an avid traveler — visiting numerous countries and taking many home movies. He was, however, best known as "Mr. Scrabble." He loved words and could beat anyone at this game almost to the very end of his life.

The Eells Family Association also benefited from his dedication, especially during the last 20 years of his life. He arranged numerous annual family gatherings and assumed the role of editor for the family bulletin. "Not Easily Overcome" is the family motto, and it is a good description of his commitment to family and all of his activities.

On Sept. 9, 1939, he married Katherine Henderson of Walton. She soon became his assistant in every sense of the word — answering the phones, greeting office patients, driving him all over Delaware County, being his traveling companion and Scrabble competitor.

Dr. Eells is survived by Katherine; a daughter, Eleanor, and her husband, Ronald Gray, of Beaver Falls, Pa.; a son, Robert, and his wife, Janice, of Jackson, Mich.; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Eells Caffrey of Walton; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth, in 1994.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at 10 a.m. at the Walton Reformed Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Scott Wilkinson, pastor, officiating. Burial in Walton Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may call at the Clark & Winter Funeral Home, Walton, on Monday, when the family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

The family acknowledges with gratitude the excellent care given by the home-care providers during the past two years.

Memorial gifts may be sent to Delaware Valley Hospital, the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Walton or the Walton Fire Department Emergency Squad.
