Magdalene Hasselbacher

SOUTH VALLEY — Ms. Magdalene Hasselbacher, 96, passed away Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at The Meadows.

She was born on April 19, 1903, in Gottsehee, Austria, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Swetitsh) Gasparidseh.

She was married to Hans Hasselbacher. He predeceased her in 1977.

Ms. Hasselbacher was a knitting machine operator for Hozak Clothing Co., Brooklyn, before moving to South Valley in 1981.

She is survived by a close friend, Sheila Farrell.

There will be no public services.

Burial will take place in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, Long Island, at a later date.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

F. Allen Washburn

SCHUYLER LAKE — F. Allen (Dutch) Washburn, born Sept. 29, 1912, son of Erdie and Harriet Allen Washburn, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Joyce) Buell and Deborah Petkewec; one brother, Harry K. Washburn; two sisters, Francis Warren and Mrs. Carl (Mary) Pike; a stepson, Leroy Huyck and wife, Marian; and two stepdaughters, Audrey Olson and Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Gay. He is also survived by six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; eight stepgrandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

On June 16, 1935, he married Jeanette Thompson, who passed away in 1971. On May 26, 1973, he married Irene Huyck, who died in 1988.

He was born in Schuyler Lake, was a graduate of Schuyler Lake High School and member of the Methodist faith.

Mr. Washburn was a well-known baseball player on local town teams in the late 1920s and 1930s, an avid hunter and an accomplished outdoorsman.

He was a past master of the Schuyler Lake Masonic Lodge #162 F&AM and a member of the lodge for 55 years and holder of the Dedicated Service Award. He was currently serving as secretary for the past 31 years. Mr. Washburn was a charter member, past fire chief and oldest in service of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department serving from 1935 until 1996. He also served as secretary and treasurer of the Schuyler Lake Fire District for 36 years.

In 1995, he received a 60-year Service Award from the New York State Fireman's Association.

Most of his life he worked on road construction and maintenance being employed by the Otsego County Highway Department for 26 years, retiring in 1978.

He was also a past president of the town of Exeter Historical Society.

Mr. Washburn served his country in World War II in the United States Army as a T5 and was a member of the American Legion Post 616.

Funeral service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at 2:30 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating. Interment will be in Schuyler Lake Cemetery at the families' convenience later this spring. The family will be present at the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Members of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. for services. Members of Schuyler Lake Lodge #162 are asked to meet at the funeral home on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. for ritualistic services.

Memorial donations may be made to the Schuyler Lake First Responders, Fire Department or Masonic Brotherhood Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Funeral services are by the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs; (315) 858-1810.

Ruth S. Watson

OTEGO — Ruth S. Watson, 81, of Otego and Bainbridge, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2000, in the Albany Medical Center of Albany.

Ruth was born April 7, 1918, in Canandaigua, the daughter of the Rev. Dean Martin and Reba May (Lincoln) Sutton.

As a young girl, Ruth lived with her parents in several areas, since her father, being a minister, went wherever his travels took him. Among the places Ruth made her home were Rose, Morris and Sidney.

Following her schooling, she became employed by Bendix and Keith Clark, both of Sidney. It was while working for Bendix that Ruth met Clarence Watson, and they were married on June 24, 1951, in Sidney. Ruth and Clarence lived, over the years, in Sidney, Guilford, Bainbridge, and, since 1987, Otego.

Ruth was a very active member of the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge, as a member, former deaconess, and member of the Missionary Society. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting and knitting.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Clarence of Otego; by her daughter, Reba Worman and her husband, Fred, of Norwich; her sister, Mariam Adams of Sidney; and three grandchildren, Rebecca Walters and husband, Michael, of Potsdam, Elizabeth Musk and husband, Paul, of Norwich and William Worman of Norwich. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Harkness of Otego and Hilda Avery and husband, Eugene, of Meridale; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her sister, Florence Sutton; and her brother, Harvey Sutton Sr.

Funeral services for Ruth will be held on Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Stephen Miller, pastor of the First Christian Church of Otego, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Norwich.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Hearts Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049.

Theresa E. Johnson

WEST EDMESTON — Theresa E. Johnson, 73, of West Edmeston, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.

She was born Dec. 13, 1926, in Brookfield, the daughter of Artemas and Irene (Maine) McIntrye.

She married Leo  Johnson on March 26, 1946. He predeceased her on Oct. 26, 1989.

Theresa was a member of the Kismet OES and the  Johnson Rogers American Legion Auxiliary. She was past county president and member of the 40 and 8 Madison County and belonged to the Leonardsville United Methodist Women's Club.

Theresa is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Joanna  Johnson of West Edmeston; three grandchildren, Charlene  Johnson and her fiancee, Jim Edwards, of Clinton, Heather and Kenneth Wysluzaly of West Edmeston and Eric  Johnson of West Edmeston; one great-grandchild, Kenneth Wysluzaly; her sister Pauline and husband, Alton Mayne, of Burlington Flats; her twin sister, Thelma Ray, of Sherburne; and her brother and his wife, Douglas and Virginia McIntrye of Connecticut; her brother-in-law and his wife, Earl and Rita Johnson; and two sisters-in-law, Dora  Johnson and Hazel Jones.

She was predeceased by one brother, Lewis McIntrye.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Leonardsville, with the Rev. Lorraine Zimmerman and the Rev. Ernest Clemons officiating. Calling hours are Friday, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Burial will be in the spring at Leonardsville Cemetery.

Theresa loved flowers, but those who would wish can make donations in her memory to the West Winfield Ambulance Fund.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Clara H. Baird

DAVENPORT CENTER — Mrs. Clara H. Baird, 93, of Davenport Center, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 26, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 19, 1906, in Portlandville, the daughter of Robert and Alta (Peet) Brown.

She married Duane Baird in 1930. Mr. Baird died in November 1961.

Clara was the post mistress for the Davenport Center post office, from 1946 until her retirement in 1972.

She enjoyed raising her flowers and watching the birds.

Mrs. Baird is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Joseph R. Hogan of Oneonta; a grandson, Joseph D. and his wife, Alice Hogan, of Davenport Center; a sister, Frances Vermilya of Oneonta; several nieces and nephews; and special friends and companions, Nancy Cooper and Barbara Sargent.

Clara was predeceased by a brother, Lowell Brown.

Graveside funeral services will be held at a later date in the spring at the Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery,  Jefferson.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish may call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Delaware Otsego Audubon Society, P.O. Box 544, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Clara H. Baird.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Georgia Decker

BURLINGTON FLATS — Mrs. Georgia Decker, 73, of Burlington Flats, died at home Thursday afternoon, Jan. 27, 2000.

She was born on Nov. 10, 1926, in Laurens, a daughter of Wesley George and Gladys (Storing) Bard.

She married Benjamin F. (Frank) Decker on Aug. 15, 1959, in Burlington Flats. Frank died on March 3, 1986.

Georgia was raised in Laurens and was a graduate of the Laurens Central School. She then attended a nurses training school and became a licensed practical nurse. For five years she served as an LPN at the former Otsego County Infirmary and then served for two years at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home. In later years she was employed as a private duty nurse, retiring in 1985.

At one time Georgia was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hartwick. She enjoyed her flower gardens and going to area lawn and garage sales.

Georgia is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Henry (Danny) and Louise McAdams of Burlington Flats; one daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Clarence Manwarren of Oxford; four grandchildren, Tammy Williams and Vicky Manwarren, both of Oxford, Sebrena Effner of Delhi and Brian McAdams of Burlington Flats; eight great-grandchildren, Dennis James Williams, Peggy Sue Williams, Danielle Nicole Williams, Dustin Lee Manwarren, David Smith, Tiffy Manwarren, Keanna Atwell and Daniel Atwell; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Henry Bard of Burlington Flats and Paul and Ida Bard of Norwich; one sister, Mrs. Betty Lints of Greene; and several nieces and nephews.

Georgia was predeceased by her brother, Robert Bard, who died in 1990.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John C. Young officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Madeline Bennett

ORLANDO, Fla. — Madeline S. Bennett, 73, of Maury Road, Orlando, Fla., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000.

Mrs. Bennett was a former director/teacher at St. Charles Pre-School & Extended Care.

She was born in Cooperstown, N.Y., she moved to central Florida in 1956.

She was a member of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

She was a member of the Postcard Club, five different paperdoll clubs and the president of Belles and Beaux.

She enjoyed quilting.

Madeline is survived by her son, Stephen Winsor of Apopka, Fla. and Robert Winsor of Hartwick, N.Y.; her sister, Barbara Warner of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by the Carey Hand Cox-Parker Funeral Home, Winter Park, Fla.; (407) 647-1942.

Ruth S. Watson

OTEGO — Ruth S. Watson, 81, of Otego and Bainbridge, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2000, in the Albany Medical Center of Albany.

Nedine Welch Grim

GROTON, Conn. — Nedine Welch Grim, 41, of 41 Monument St., Groton, Conn., died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn.

She was born Sept. 8, 1958, in Cooperstown, N.Y., the daughter of Edward G. and Olga Welch, of Cornish Hill, Cooperstown, N.Y.

Mrs. Grim was married to Navy Lt. Cmdr. Gregory W. Grim on Nov. 30, 1982, in Beaufort, S.C.

She was a graduate of Cooperstown High School and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia and a master's degree in education from the University of Georgia as well.

Before being transferred to the United States Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Conn., with her husband, Mrs. Grim taught elementary school in Beaufort, and Bremerton, Wash. She also was very active in her sons' schools.

While in Groton, she became a volunteer with the Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut as well as a member of the board of directors. She was also involved with the Bill Memorial Library in Groton.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Grim is survived by two sons, Pius G. and Wesley M. Grim, both of Groton, Conn.; and a brother, Edward Peter Welch of Cooperstown, N.Y.

Officiating at a memorial service held in Groton, Conn., on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, was the United States Navy Episcopal Chaplain Ted Edwards and Chaplain Doyle Dunn from the United States Naval Submarine base in Groton, Conn.

Burial at Cooperstown, N.Y., will be private and held at a later date at Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown, N.Y.

Donations in her memory may be made to either the Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut, 255 Hempstead St., New London, Conn. 06320; or to the Friends of the Bill Memorial Library, 240 Monument St., Groton, Conn. 06340.

Stewart A. Peck

CLIFTON PARK — Stewart A. Peck, 52, of Valencia Lane in Clifton Park, died suddenly on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at the Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, after being stricken at his home.

He was born in Binghamton, the son of the late Stewart R. and Antoinette Possemato Peck.

Mr. Peck was a graduate of the Sidney High School in Sidney and the Husson College in Bangor, Maine, where he received his bachelor's degree in business administration.

He was the superintendent of materials management Eastern Division for Niagara Mohawk in Clifton Park having worked for the company for more than 30 years.

Mr. Peck enjoyed woodworking and taking care of his home. He was an auto enthusiast, capable of doing all mechanical repairs.

He was the beloved husband of Donna K. Sargent Peck; and the devoted father of Stewart W. Peck of Clifton Park; and the caring brother of Terry J. Peck of RioRico, Ariz.; He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family in the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route 9 in Clifton Park.

There will be no public calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Care and Share Energy Fund sponsored by Niagara Mohawk and the American Red Cross, care of 220 Herald Place, Syracuse, N.Y.; the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Rd., Albany, N.Y. 12205; or to the charity of one's choice.
